Alex Young is trapped in a mysterious mansion, with no idea how she got there, or how to get out — and also, everything looks like a PS1 game. If you miss the old-school style of horror games, you'll likely be intrigued by this one, which is filled with puzzles, traps, and secrets to discover as you try to escape the mansion.
Made by a team of just two people, with Josie Brechner (Extreme Meatpunks Forever, Tiny Postcards) as composer, Tartarus Key promises that it's a horror game with no jump scares — because the artist hates them, and "vowed to make a game that's downright spooky without them."
A PC demo is available during Steam's Next Fest (October 1-7), and the game will come to Nintendo Switch in 2022.

95% of PS1 game play horribly today. I don't have faith this will be good.

That first room reminds me of Clive Barker's Undying. Looks good!
PS1-style is one of those retro-graphical eras I can't get on board with, except for the horror genre.
I mean, the graphics were awful, but the awfulness translates well into horror. Gives you the idea that the game itself is cursed. Just turning it on puts you at risk.
Wow, they really mastered that artstyle. Not too polygonal but not too smooth either, perfection.
Looks better and probably play better than most N64 & GameCube games. Now those were awful.
3D PS1 games have aged horribly. And whenever a game goes for "a PS1 look" it's always THAT look. The best PS1 horror games for me had prerendered backgrounds. Nobody tries that style anymore. Why can't we have a game like REBirth on Switch, but a new one, in that style, not of the RE franchise, but just a talented studio attempting the pre-rendered look but with today's technology. Back in the day it was a means to make a game better looking than if you ran it natively and with the Switch being underpowered, wouldn't it make sense there?
@Bearzilla823 Gamecube games? Really? The Gamecube is known for having fantastic games and not appreciated enough in its time.
So much Silent Hill inspiration in the fonts and UI. Looks neat though.
@Tandoori Sorry I hated the graphics on both systems. I will admit the GC did have slightly better graphics but I still hate them both.
@Alienfreaks04 Mmmm...no. I own nearly 200 of them and a good majority hold up today, unlike the N64. Some are just...weird. Devs were trying new things back then and sometimes it didn't work out. PS1 holds up over N64 any day. Everyone just remembers the 10 good first-party games for N64 and forgets the rest of the library was pretty bad. Literally the most nostalgia blind console ever. I own both and owned both as a kid. Sony just had the third party power.
