Super Mario Sunshine might not be everyone's Mario game of choice, but it's still managed to develop a bit of a cult following over the years. While many Nintendo fans would love to see a sequel to the original 2002 GameCube title, it doesn't seem it'll be happening any time soon, so how about a mod instead?
Enter 'Super Mario Eclipse' - as highlighted by Kotaku, it's a custom creation that's part "beta restoration", part "enhancement", part "original mod" and all "fan service". Here's a more detailed rundown - noting how this mod includes an all-new expanded story, new missions, new custom worlds, new playable characters such as Luigi, collaborations - like Monkey Ball - and much more...
"Super Mario Eclipse is part beta restoration, part enhancement, part original mod, and all fan service. With dozens upon dozens of new missions, fully custom worlds, challenging secret courses, and an interconnected Isle Delfino to boot, this is the Super Mario Sunshine experience you always wanted- and then some! Isle Delfino is hiding all new secrets just waiting to be uncovered, and with multiple playable characters by your side, there's nothing you can't do. Presenting an all-new expanded story, crazy new gimmicks, exciting new moves and abilities, and references to your favorite Gamecube era Mario Games, get ready for the collaborative efforts of the entire Sunshine modding community to finally come together and bring you something special! This Super Mario Sunshine mod is sure to Eclipse the rest!"
The same YouTube channel this video is featured on notes how it's not particularly worried about Nintendo disrupting development:
"Nintendo rarely strikes mods. It's fangames they're usually after."
If this has got you in the mood for Super Mario Sunshine, Nintendo has previously released the original game as part of last year's Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection - just keep in mind, it was a limited-time release, so it might be a little hard to track down.
Mario's not the only one getting entirely new expansion content thanks to the mod community, either. Characters like Link from The Legend of Zelda series are also receiving new "mod" expansions. Just last week, Zelda: Breath of the Wild 'Second Wind' got a major update - adding a new town, new NPCs, and a new storyline.
What do you think of Super Mario Sunshine Eclipse? Would you like to see Nintendo release a follow-up to this GameCube classic one day? Tell us down in the comments.

Damn it NL, I hope nintendo doesn't catch wind of this.
Shhhhhhh. The Nintendo Ninjas will see….
Would prefer a sequel to Odyssey but quite impressive!
Introducing Nintendo DMCA, don’t b***h about it when it happens! 😃
I guess it's fully legal and will never be taken down if NL doesn't say anything about it. Great job reporting it (read sarcastically).
Why does all the New additions look like such mud? That is some contrast.
I'm starting to think NintendoLife writes articles about mods specifically to alert Nintendo to their existence 😏
"Isle Delfino is hiding all new secrets just waiting to be uncovered".... You know who else is hiding waiting to jump out instead? Nintendo ninjas
Why do they release demos this early??
It's basically begging to get itself torn down.
@Snatcher
The original creators video even says he isn't worried about it getting taken down, as Nintendo seems to focus more on fan games rather than mods
Oh, come on guys. The Nintendo ninjas are no way near that strict.
There are loads and loads and loads of mods out there that haven’t been touched.
Lots of fan games too. Nintendo ninjas mainly go after ones that recreate games that Nintendo still wants to sell. Not always the case, but they aren’t as strict as the internet likes to harp on about.
I’m kinda surprised to see nl feature a mod… like I said there are lots out there, why this one particularly?
I don't know why I believed for a sec it was gonna be an actual sunshine sequel... T-thanks I guess
@Alpha008
They will absolutely target stuff like this that’s featured on sites like this and social media it doesn’t really matter what the context and scope of the project is, a project will be worked on for months and quietly talked about on forums but the second it gets highlighted like this the takedowns fly. Nintendo sleeps on the dozens and dozens of devices you can get on major online retailers loaded with hundreds of their ROMs but they go at fangames and mods that go viral like a rabid dog.
Gah! For a second I though we were getting a new Mario game!
I’m almost 100% certain that mods are legal. You need to supply your own ROM here.
@SalvorHardin well, I mean, I’m not an expert on the subject, but DYKG did a video about games that Nintendo actually brought the ban hammer down on, and they said it just doesn’t happen as much as it’s made out to be.
Which games are you thinking of that have been shut down?
@SalvorHardin Nintendo Life really needs to stop reporting on these mods/fan games. There are hundreds of mods for Nintendo games like Super Mario World on rom hacking websites. They are not taken down because one, they are not being heavily publicized, and two, they are perfectly legal since they only provide the patches and not the roms.
Then again, the ratio of mods over fan games getting a C&D by Nintendo is leaning heavily toward fan games.
Finally more mods so I can enjoy playing my favorite Mario game even more
@SalvorHardin Not necessarily, they don't go after everything posted online. I doubt they'll go after this:
https://www.nintendolife.com/features/how-the-super-mario-musical-got-made-and-avoided-nintendos-cease-and-desist
But they will go after Super Mario Eclipse because it's using their official assets and branding (Super Mario) which falsely gives the impression of an official product.
I'll always say it but Fangame creators need to stop using Nintendo's assets, branding and logos. They need to create their own assets, logos and like the musical quit calling it "Super Mario". Call it "<insert your name>'s Mario : Whatever you want ".
Lol. Stuff like this survives best underground if folk can stop highlighting it in the media. Ah well.
We all know how this one gonna end
Damn except the pinata level, the new ones look like early alpha. Why release a demo that early?
Nintendo moving in to ruin everything for everyone in 3...2...
haha they should get an artist... those textures look rough man
Hope this runs on real hardware, or at least Wii and Wii U through Nintendont.
Everyone calling out Nintendo life for bringing attention to this. The Project M smash mod has been fairly high profile (including here) for years and as far as I'm aware doesn't ever end up in the crosshairs.
@Dr_Lugae fan-games and rom-hacks are usually meant to be passion projects by fans, there not trying to lower the sales of the official products, if it removes any Nintendo related stuff, its not a fan game anymore
Ahh was hoping the patch could be applied to Super Mario 3D All Stars. Well hopefully can play it on the Steam Deck 😜
You gotta stop with this Nintendo life every time you highlight one of these it gets taken down a week later
I remember playing Counter-Strike beta 7 when it was just a free mod...now THAT was a mod.
@BirdBoy16 So often they use official branding and sprites/models lifted from official games. Which passion or not is still dubious, it's not really respecting Nintendo's rights to give away the assets(Music, art, level designetc.) lifted from an offical Nintendo's game in a free game?
I do some indie games myself in my free time. But if I was going to do a fangame why shouldn't I use my own branding for Mario? and my own work for sprites e.g. here's a Mario sprite I've made before:
https://imgur.com/a/1nccPsx
If anything wouldn't going the extra mile to make your own assets for a fangame of a series you like. Would be both a greater sign of passion while also respecting the boundaries of the company's ownership?
@Dr_Lugae I don’t completely disagree, but most of these fan games are made by developers that are still figuring out how to code, if its not being used for profit and the developer makes a disclaimer stating some official assets are used, then why make a big deal out of it?
