Back at E3 it was confirmed that Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is heading to Switch (along with various other platforms); now Koei Tecmo Europe has confirmed that it'll launch in the region on 28th October, also with the localised name of Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water. [UPDATE: It'll also arrive in North America on the same date.]
The overview trailer (above) gives an extensive look at the in-development Switch version. Along with graphical improvements, the main pitch is a photo mode that allows you to create images based on ghosts and locations encountered in the story.
There'll also be various new cosmetic outfits, some as DLC that will be included in a Digital Deluxe version, and a couple as pre-order / early purchase bonuses. However, the Zero Suit Samus and Zelda outfits from the Wii U original are not included in the game.
The Project Zero franchise celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, with the original game launching in Japan back in 2001. In celebration of its 20-year milestone, KOEI TECMO Europe revealed a special Digital Deluxe Edition for PROJECT ZERO: MAIDEN OF BLACK WATER that comes packed with a copy of the game, a digital artbook, and six costumes inspired from previous characters in the series. These anniversary costumes include; the Mio Amakura and Rei Kurosawa outfits for Yuri, the Mayu Amakura and two Miku Hinasaki outfits for Miu, and the Kei Amakura outfit for Ren.
KOEI TECMO Europe also revealed that those who pre-order PROJECT ZERO: MAIDEN OF BLACK WATER, or purchase the game within the first two weeks of launch, will be entitled to a special Ryza costume – inspired by the one featured in the first Atelier Ryza title – allowing the main characters to don the popular alchemist’s outfit and hat.

Any word of the Nintendo themed costumes coming back in this version?
Thought about getting this on Wii U but never did, maybe this time.
"This title will be available for purchase digitally". Still no physical release huh? Well, no thanks then, I was all in until I saw that line. My money will go instead to games that get released physically, plenty to choose from.
@jump Nothing specific mentioned that I've seen, but we'll keep an eye out!
@jump Just saw an update on this actually, the Zero Suit Samus and Zelda outfits aren't in the Switch version. Sad times.
lol Are they still not going to release this physically, even on the Switch?
The rules are that the Wii U physical version will massively plummet in price when this is released, right? Right?
Still no physical release in NA? The lack of Zero Suit Samus and Zelda costumes are disappointing but not a deal breaker. If it's digital only then I'll wait for a deep discount and probably buy it for PS5 instead. Sad times 😔...
@Ralizah @RudyC3
According to PlayAsia, there will be some physical editions. https://www.play-asia.com/search/Fatal+Frame
@kupocake
Not necessarily. Titles like original Earthbound, Sunset Riders and Wild Guns carts didn't suddenly plummit when they had modern digital re-releases.
@kupocake I don't think so. If anything, it will give it exposure and make demand by collectors rise. That's my guess. Anyway, I'm keeping mine, it's not for sale. Unless in the unlikely event someone one day wants to trade something of actual value to me for it, who actually values the item, not just its possibly higher resale value.
@ThomasBW84 Darn, that sucks!
It's funny to read "featuring a photo mode".
I hope they release it on cartridge because I'm intrigued by this game and have little space left on my SD cards.
Wondering if I should download it again on Wii U or should get the Switch version instead...
I'll have to pass on this again if it's digital-only. I played the FTS chapters on the Wii U back in the day and enjoyed it, but the size of the full download put me off thanks to the Wii U's lack of internal storage (and I have the 32 GB model).
Personally, I'd like Crimson Butterfly to make the Switch.
Will get it if it gets a physical release and includes the original bikini / bra whatever it was we missed in the English wii u version
Excited to get this and play through it with my wife. I dont mind digi only. Day 1 for me!
Look ma, another port
I will hopefully plug my Wii U back in and play this again at Halloween. Never finished it at the time.
@Ralizah : There will be Japanese and Asian physical releases (the latter will likely have English packaging) and are both available from Play-Asia.
Play-Asia is also taking pre-orders on European and American physical releases, but they have most likely jumped the gun on these, as the Direct has only indicated an eShop release for Western markets, and I doubt that these are actually materialising.
I'm not going to take the risk on waiting as I suspect that these will be limited releases, and I shall be ordering from Play-Asia. They're also throwing in free economy shipping (including pre-orders) until the end of the month (their shipping is usually bloody expensive), so, now is as good as time as any to take the plunge.
@kupocake I own the physical on Wii U with Steel Book, Art Book etc.
Physical please!
@EVIL-C @Silly_G Not releasing physical editions in NA/Europe would be another missed opportunity, but an english-language asian release would do as well. Really appreciating that the Switch is a region-free device!
Hopefully those physical listings for NA/Eu turn out to be real.
@kupocake I hope not, as I still have my sealed Special Edition copy. I didn't buy it to sell (though I might at some point). I just never got around to actually playing it. I have (and love) the other Project Zero/Fatal Frame games on XBox and PS, so pre-ordered it on WiiU as soon as I could.
Yep, I preordered the (NA) physical edition from Playasia. Seems this is another Ninja Gaiden situation where Playasia gets the physical versions
Any word on how much this is? I only put off getting it on Wii U because it never shifted from £39.99. Got a 1TB SSD for Wii U an have to mess about with space on Switch. If it's £20-30 on Switch that might swing it.
Yes but the real question is will the North America Switch release be a physical release this time? Nintendo stupidly and purposely made this digital only when they brought it for Wii U over here, if this had a physical release on Switch then I will double dip otherwise I'm getting this for PC only.
I got Fatal Frame 2 and 4 on Wii, played a few levels on both then kinda forgot about them. I'll give this a shot if the price isn't $60.
@Ventilator I wouldn't expect anything less than a complete Wii U set from someone with a Devil's Third avatar!
So does Nintendo own Fatal Frame or not? why is this appearing on Xbox and Playstation consoles?
Darn it, lost another Wii U title 😂😂 There's only a handful left now surely? 🤔 XCX, Color Splash, StarFox?
Xbox version for me this time round. Have special edition physical on Wii u.
Around the same day as Luigi's Mansion 3 back in 2019. Great choice.
@kupocake The rule is that the Zelda and Metroid costumes ensure that the Wii U version, especially the Limited Edition, will rise in price. Same with Scribblenauts Unlimited that featured Nintendo characters on the Wii U version that were all cut from the Switch version.
@CrissCross87 Nintendo gave the international ownership rights of the IP back to Tecmo Koei as the series doesn't benefit them as much anymore but with a catch. The catch is that while the series can go multiplat from now on outside Japan, future FF games must also be released on a Nintendo system as well exclusively in Japan since Nintendo still owns the IP rights over there. So while Nintendo only give away the series outside Japan, they still own the series at their home turf so as long as you don't live in Japan, you could play future entries on any platform.
@CrissCross87 Similar deals happened to Daemon X Machina, Octopath Traveler, Devil's Third, and The Wonderful 101. Nintendo is now reasonable enough to let weaker IPs (that sold less than expected and are developed by 3rd parties) make money on other platforms.

Other than those there are still some nice Wii U games left that are not on Switch, like Tekken Tag Tournament 2 - Wii U Edition, Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut, Mass Effect 3 - Special Edition, Devil's Third, TANK! TANK! TANK!, the 3 Batman Arkham games (plus 2 Lego Batman games), Sonic: Lost World, Sonic The Hedgehog 4, Knytt Underground, Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones, Scram Kitty and His Buddy on Rails, and Year Walk, and if you want the Nintendo content in Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water and Scribblenauts Unlimited you only get those on Wii U. Also you might count Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U as titles that are different enough from their Switch sequels.
@Specter_of-the_OLED where did you get this information?
Based on what you said, it seems any future FF games, A Nintendo platform is pretty much given!!!
@Ralizah Oh yeah I agree. I find it infuriating that NA, the biggest gaming market in the world, still can't get a confirmed physical release of this, not to mention countless other games.
@EVIL-C I can understand why some games don't have physical releases on switch
1. The developers don't have the funding to put a physical release
OR
2. The game is too big to fit on a switch cartridge.
I understand these reasons but why does Japan get physical and digital but NA and Europe get digital ONLY?
I don't mind digital and I have both digital and physical games but it would be really nice for NA to get a choice between physical and digital. To satisfy both
@anoyonmus
In the case of Fatal Frame, Koei Tecmo is huge, and the game itself can easily fit on a (at most) 16GB card.
Your guess is as good as mine. Physical copies often litter the stores in Japan, yet often outside Japan/Asia, you'll consider yourself lucky to find an uncommon title here that isn't being price gouged like mad.
@RudyC3 Playasia has a physical version. I will be grabbing it there. It will be in English, so should be good to go. Take care.
@RudyC3 why not importing it from Asia? They are getting a physical edition. This game is WORTH IT! I loved the Wii U original. I even bought the European physical edition. It is that good.
Eh without a physical version I have almost no interest in this. I don't really spend more than $20 on digital only games. Are there any physical versions of this game playable in NA?
Still no Physical..... WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. I don't mind buying digital but man no physical option sucks. Make this 4 games in October to buy. "Opens crying wallet"
@EVIL-C @anoyonmus The safe bet would be that K-T doesn't feel the series is profitable enough to make a physical release worthwhile, but since so many people will skip out on it if it goes digital-only (like I did with the Wii U original), it seems like a particularly nasty self-fulfilling prophecy.
The series is fantastic, so it's not like it couldn't do significantly better with the right marketing and release strategy.
@kupocake Thank you. I bought over 75 retails on Wii U, and 155 Eshop games. To me personally, Wii U did well. lol
I'm one of the few who liked the online in Devil's Third, and servers were populated for at least 1 year i think.
Due to the extreme data needed to be transfered, Europe had their own server and USA had their own. This were bad for Americans as they had less players than Europe.
Before they shutted down Wii U servers, i made all these screenshots.

@Ralizah also
This is like one of the few rare exceptions that a trailer ACTUALLY used Switch footage.
If it doesn't do a physical in the states ill pick up the all Asian US variant like Ninja Gaiden and Doeramon. Its indistinguishable from U.S games. Keep my OCD switch library in check
@ferroreo Because I already ordered from Play Asia and found myself having to pay more than half the value of the game in customs fees. Never again.
If Play- Asia lists a supposedly European physical release, then that means some retailers in Europe should sell it too eventually, assuming they're not full of *****.
It is really disappointing to see them do the same mistake they did with the WII U for not releasing a physical version of the game (or limited European one) then complain about the series is not selling well. it is 20th anniversary , they should do better than that. very very disappointed.
@anoyonmus Well it is, Nintendo of Japan is still publishing the games in Japan as well as handling all marketing of the IP over there. Tecmo Koei only had permission to make the game multiplatform elsewhere. If you need to know more just ask Nintendo.
@Specter_of-the_OLED at least it is pretty much guaranteed for a Nintendo platform. Any future games have to come to a nintendo platform.
Maybe it is something like Nioh. A similar situation like Nioh
I sure hope this isnt at full price. I want to try it but not for new games go for
I have never understood the different titles per region, especially for Europe & US. All that does is confuse people & make it harder to discuss & report on.
@Ralizah Yep, they should have learned from that. Digital is often just an easy way out for these publishers, made even more egregious that FF 1-4 and the Wiimake of 2 all had standard retail releases. I get it a niche series, but more exposure could make it more widely known. I think the series is brilliant.
@Hesham a compilation of the classics would also be much appreciated... The series deserves this and much more.
They've could at least made a physical Limited edition like the last time...
