Re: Review: Yoshi's New Island (3DS)

RevolverLink

I'll be treating Yoshi's New Island the same way I treat the New Super Mario Bros. series; I'll consider picking up a copy if I ever see a deal where the game is $20-25 off, but otherwise I'm not going to go out of my way to buy a competent, but inessential, platformer.

Re: Feature: The Biggest 3DS Games of 2014

@Jazzer94 - Umihara Kawase Portable was released for the PSP and was initially planned for a NA release under the title "Yumi's Odd Odyssey", but it was a buggy, butchered re-release of the 2nd game that was widely panned and it remained a Japanese exclusive.

Yumi's Odd Odyssey/Sayonara Umihara Kawase, while re-using that old planned name, is a brand new entry made by the original developer and the first game in the series to receive a Western release.

I'd buy Mario Tennis right now if I thought I had the time to spare for it. It's my favorite Mario sports title by a pretty wide margin and I have no idea what I did with my old cart.

As it is, I'll happily download that Bravely Default demo.

Re: Review: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies (3DS eShop)

RevolverLink

This game could've gotten review scores in the 5 or 6 range from most outlets and I still would've bought it.

It's good to have you back, Nick.

@Einherjar - Finishing all four of the previous games would be the ideal way to go into Dual Destinies, but you should be fine.

You might not be as familiar with the returning characters from Apollo Justice, but when looking at the Ace Attorney series' overall story, 4's definitely feels the most like a standalone entry.

Re: Hardware Review: Nintendo 2DS

RevolverLink

Unless Nintendo decides to be nice and do away with region-locking, I might import the 2DS if it ever gets released in Japan.

Not so much because I'm terribly interested in what this version of the handheld has to over the other two models, but because it would simply be the cheapest model with which to play the many great Japanese 3DS games that don't make it out of the country.

Re: Atlus Knocks 10 Bucks Off Code of Princess, Soul Hackers and Etrian Odyssey IV in The North American 3DS eShop

RevolverLink

Alas, I already own all three!

For anyone that's interested in Etrian Odyssey IV and hasn't played the previous Etrian Odyssey games or the eShop's free EOIV demo, make sure you try that demo first. EOIV is fantastic, but it's not for everybody, and the demo will give you an accurate (and lengthy) taste of how the game plays and progresses. Plus, you can carry over your saved data from the demo to the full game, which is pretty nifty.

Re: Rumour: The Wind Waker HD May Have An Additional Difficulty Level

RevolverLink

If they want to do a Master Quest-type remix that helps make the game feel fresh again and a little more challenging, that'd obviously be an amazing treat, but I'll gladly settle for enemies that can actually take more than a quarter of a heart from Link's health.

Taking a few hits from almost any adversary in TWW was almost never a big deal, because Link was just too durable for them to be true threats - especially later in the game, when you'd managed to put together some extra heart containers.

Re: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destines DLC Won't Feature The Quiz in The West

RevolverLink

If Capcom had released the first game outside of Japan as a straight translation instead of a quality localisation, we'd still only have one Ace Attorney/Gyakuten Saiban game.

The most important thing is to get the original intent across. Cultural shorthand varies from language to language and country to country, especially when it comes to humor and pop culture references, both of which are creative wells AA makes heavy use of. Puns, in particular, are entirely dependent on whatever language you're using. Having Japanese puns receive the romaji or even literal English (or French or Spanish or Farsi, etc.) treatments would not have conveyed the humor or hinted character traits in the same way they were meant to for the average Japanese player in the original releases, so in order for you to laugh (or, depending on how you feel about puns, groan) in the places you were supposed to laugh, they had to be adapted.

I downloaded Shantae along with Attack of the Friday Monsters! last week, but I put it aside in order to finish the latter game. I'm really looking forward to starting it over the next few days.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Is Shaping Up To Acquire Troubled Atlus

RevolverLink

If they get acquired by Nintendo, I'll be reasonably happy with it, but I'd rather see a company like Marvelous pick Atlus up and allow them to carry on as a 3rd party developer.

But really, just as long they aren't acquired by cancerous publishers like EA, Activision (not that either of them would be interested at all to begin with), Capcom or Square-Enix, I'll probably be okay with whoever acquires Atlus.

Re: Feature: The History Of The Famicom

RevolverLink

You know what amazes me most about the Famicom? That it was launched in 1983... and was still receiving worthwhile official software in 1994. I can't think of another home console like it.

Also, on a separate note, the number of different colors Famicom cartridges came in was really cool. Much better than the drab gray carts the NES always had, with a handful of notable exceptions.
