This week's Nintendo Download update for North America is in, though it prompts a distinct feeling of déjà vu due to it being almost identical to last week's update; just two new downloads make an appearance. Our suspicion is that the details are reiterated to compensate for any confusion or loss of attention from the festive week's Nintendo Network problems, so we've recreated the list below. This week has a mini-game for us all — spot the new entries.
Wii U eShop
Dr. Luigi (Nintendo, $14.99) — Announced just recently in Nintendo Direct on 18th December, this Luigi-themed new version of the iconic Dr. Mario franchise includes new modes as well as online multiplayer and leaderboards; we'll see whether this is just what the doctor ordered in our review.
CastleStorm (Zen Studios, $9.99) — Arriving on the Wii U eShop after a bit of a wait, this is a promising hybrid of tower defence and physics-based destruction, the premise of which seems perfectly suited to the Wii U and its GamePad. There'll be touch screen controls, local multiplayer with one player exclusively using the GamePad's screen, as well as a campaign on online multiplayer to check out. We'll get destructive to bring you our review soon.
Wii U Virtual Console
Super Punch Out!! (Nintendo, $7.99) — While many remember the 8-bit original with great fondness, there's plenty to be said for this entry's qualities, as it goes for an entirely different visual style and even more outlandish opponents. Full of character and challenge, you can check out our Wii Virtual Console Super Punch Out!! review while we go into sparring for the Wii U rematch.
Mega Man X2 (Capcom, $7.99) — While spin-offs aren't always a success, the early X games in the Mega Man series certainly captured the imagination. With a move-set and approach somewhat different to the "classic" series, this sequel is a rather good follow up to its X predecessor; you can learn more about it in our Mega Man X2 review.
3DS eShop
EDGE (Two Tribes, $1.99) — This arrived on Wii U as the second of three Two Tribes Trilogy releases, and will hit the 3DS as a potentially perfect pick-up-and-play title. It's simple action of manoeuvring a cube becomes challenging and complex, with the Wii U version having a terrific audio and visual style. We'll see how this version stacks up, but in the meantime you can check out the strong recommendation in our Wii U eShop EDGE review.
Bird Mania Christmas (Teyon, $1.99) — This is an endless flyer (as opposed to runner) that follows up on the simple, fun and addictive original. The Citizen Kane of games this 'ain't, but we enjoyed the original and this one, with online leaderboards helping it along — check out our Bird Mania Christmas review for the full lowdown.
Cubit The Hardcore Platformer Robot (CoderChild, $2.99) — This one-button and challenging platformer arrives with various cameos from other game characters with origins in Spain. There's an emphasis on music and rhythm, too, and we'll bring you our review soon.
3DS Virtual Console
Mario Tennis (Nintendo, $4.99) — When Mario Tennis Open arrived some bemoaned the absence of RPG-like features, so now the Game Boy Color entry in the series arrives to ease that levelling up itch, serving up a challenge to rise up the ranks and defeat Mario on the portable system. We'll let you know whether this is an Ace or a double fault in our review in the New Year.
3DS Retail Demo
Bravely Default (Square Enix, free) — As promised in the final Nintendo Direct of 2013, this demo arrives with a unique quest that promises "hours of content not included in the main game"; progress in the demo can also be transferred to the full game when it arrives on 7th February.

Bravely Default Demo and Mega Man X2 HERE I COME!
Edit- Guess my Eshop hasn't updated yet with the demo.
Boggles the mind that they put a perfect handheld game, Dr. Luigi, on the WiiU. I hope, at least, that you can play it on the GamePad.
Didn't this already come out last Week...? -_-;
.... Just the Bravely Default demo for me.
@Warruz
I agree with your weekly choices!
I've given up on smb3...
i was excited for the bravely default demo but it has not updated here yet
The only new entries are Mega Man X2 and the Bravely Default demo, and the list is repeated likely because of that. It seems as though Nintendo will resume normal service next week - North America might only have had two new downloads this week, but Europe only got one, and Japan didn't get any.
I hope that Pokemon bank comes out sometime this week. I've been waiting since October (like everyone else) to get it. I'll probably get Dr. Luigi eventually but $15 dollars is a little expensive for that game at the moment. I'll be waiting for a discount.
Bravely Default Demo for me!
Wow so that Two Tribes game has finally came out on sale. Too bad my New Years Resolution was to not buy any games whatsoever. Even though $2 is cheap I'm still sticking to it.
I'll go get the tear buckets for everyone who will be upset to learn that SMB3 isn't released yet .
FLYING FAIRY!!!!!!
"This week has a mini-game for us all — spot the new entries."
I will play spot the mistake. It says that the review for Bird Mania Christmas will arrive soon, while it is already there. It made me buy the game. Edit: it is now fixed. Good job!
Anyway, very excited to pick up Bravely Default's demo, and maybe Megaman X2. And that EOIV at $20 sounds way too interesting. Anyone knows the size of the download?
Bravely Default demo for sure.
After seeing December's Nintendo Direct I'm ridiculously excited for the Bravely Default demo!
Does the Bravely Default demo have play limit like other demos ??
Getting Edge 3DS right now! Cant wait till the Bravely Default demo comes out!
For those confused, NA eShop updates at noon ET. As always.
I have the Code of Princess cart, but I'd like to have the digital version. Does anyone know if the save is stored on the cart? I'd hate to lose all my progress.
Ah, now that I think about it, I'm sure it's on the cart.
Wow, this is seriously weak. Super Mario Bros. 3. Just do it already.
i love square enix for making awesome demo , ( "hours of content not included in the main game"; progress in the demo can also be transferred to the full game ) awesome idea ^^ / finally megaman X2 is there about time
Is this Mario tennis as good as the Mario Golf? If it is I'm in.
@SuperiorTech
You better get a tear dumptruck, the bucket wont be enough and get a second for A Link to the Past because that's what I am crying over...
@Warruz @GN004Nadleeh I think the American eShop update at 9 AM PT, so, let's all wait one more hour.
Love the VC offerings this week! Although i am jealous that everyone has Mario 3 and Link to the Past but NA, Super Punch-Out!! and Mega Man X2 are great games in their own right.
Also looking forward to some Dr. Luigi and the Bravely Default demo! Great way to start 2014 on the eshop!
So begins another week of waiting for SMB3.
Gonna download the Bravely Default demo after work. Can't wait.
But this all came out last week! (except for the demo)
@MrWalkieTalkie The article says: "It's déjà vu, plus some additional treats"
@Mr_Nose there's an app for that... just search data on the eshop
I hope I like the Bravely Default demo because if I do I will purchase the final game when it comes out.
Is this Bravely Default demo different to the European one ? (I want to know whether I should bother playing the demo first or start the main game).
(I got bought the game as a present but haven't started playing it yet - I wouldn't have bought it for myself due to pay to win additions but I did quite like the look of it.)
Need that DEMO!!
@kitsunetails8 That's awesome, I didn't know that.
Thanks so much!
Just the demo for me. I haven't really been interested in the game until now, and maybe the demo can pike my interest.
I'm going to download the Bravely Default Demo, MegaMan X2 and Dr. Luigi.
Mega Man X2! I forgive Nintendo for holding off on SMB3 for another week.
@Blue_Yoshi
None? The whole year?
Oh Super Mario Brothers 3, where art thou?
Def getting the Bravely Default demo
Finally X2! Now if we could just get the third one!
Oh jeez forgot about the Bravely Fault demo and here I am with no playable console for it... life's unfair.
Oh, good, SMB3 is finally here.
Huh? What do you mean it isn't? Nintendo promised us SMB3 before 2014! You mean they lied??
Yay, finally X2! Hopefully X3 isn't too far away!
How many uses does the BD demo have?
Nintendo.
Ending 2013 with a giant online crash.
Starting 2014 with the same old digital trash.
Fail.
are you sure this is correct? mario tennis came out last week.
I'm glad I pre-ordered Bravely Default. Based on the poll and comments it sounds like there's a lot of interest in this game. Hopefully Nintendo produced enough...don't want another shortage at launch like they had with Fire Emblem.
I picked up dr Luigi a couple days ago and Steam world becausebit was on sale. I may grab Mario Tennis though.5 dollars seems like a good deal
Another week of a postponed Pokebank and SMB3... Why is Pokebank still postponed, again? The traffic has been gone for about five days now. I'm sorry that I don't understand anything about digital releases, but if there's a problem with traffic, and it has been solved, then I would release my game the day after it has been fixed!
Putting aside my anger at the fact that SMB3 is still not here, the eShop's down-time is no excuse for NoA not to add a week's worth of content to the eShop. I'll pick up the demo, and maybe X2, but I'm ready to go to NoA's HQ in Washington and throw a brick through a window. Of course I'm kidding, but if they continue to do stupid stuff like this, I may get to that point...
I already got Edge last week, but it's there again, so I guess it counts voting again?
But I'm still disappointed for not having SMB 3.
Bd Demo when I take the 3ds I lent to my friend.
But looking at too similar to ff4ds which I cannot like... I don't think will play the main game
It's entirely possible the Bravely Default demo will be my deciding factor in purchasing BD. Also, EDGE is great, for $2.
Why to repeat? there are almost the same games than last week.
@Baum897 With Mega Man X2, I have no real complaints this week.
....So is Nintendo silently canceling the Pokemon Bank here or something? :/ (yes I know its not happening, but...ugh....T.T )
When the hell are we getting Pokemon Bank? Need additional space for my 'mons.
Still no Super Mario Bros 3 or A Link to the Past? Really NOA? I don't get it.
I've already bought CastleStorm and Dr. Luigi. I will definitely be downloading the Bravely Default Demo.
what? no pokemon bank!? nothing here for me...
@Baum897 I am not mad, but I am a little confused by the lack of eShop sales during the holiday season. I am irritated that Zen Pinball 2 on PS3/PC now has a free table while the Wii U version doesn't. Finally, I am frustrated why NoA will not release two games everyone else in the world is enjoying.
@Baum897
Nintendo of Europe issued details for two full weeks of downloads previously, so a fresh update isn't expected.
Europe got an actual update, where America only got a demo and a single VC title, so don't even start with that.
@Mr_Nose There's an app on the eshop that allows you to extract your data from the game card to the sd card on the 3ds console for cases like the one you mentioned, it's called CARD TO SD SAVE, or something like that.
@allav866 What are you talking about? We only got Mario Tennis for GBC, as was announced already last week. So you got more this week and also better stuff.
@sinalefa Indeed, my bad
@KeeperBvK holy crap, I didn't even notice that, and I had the page right in front of me. I gotta stop posting stuff when I'm tired, cos nothing good ever comes out of it.
I'd buy Mario Tennis right now if I thought I had the time to spare for it. It's my favorite Mario sports title by a pretty wide margin and I have no idea what I did with my old cart.
As it is, I'll happily download that Bravely Default demo.
MEGA MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No complaints from me this week!
@Mytoemytoe. Here, here.
It was as if millions of SMB3 and Zelda 3 fans cried out in anger and were suddenly silenced...
Kidding, I kid. I actually thought SMB3 was a done deal today. The updated Nintendo.com release page listed both 3DS and Wii U versions as the latest additions to the 'coming soon' roster, but Mega Man X2 is still a very welcome title. It's good to see the online services functioning normally.
Quick question... is it true that SNES titles employing the Super FX chip have been help up for eShop release over legal issues? It would explain why the original StarFox has yet to make an appearance.
@BAGBOY That is flipping awesome that they already thought of that. Gonna check it out in a bit. Thanks, man.
Sick to death of crap U.S. WiiU virtual console options. If it was the year 2000, it would STILL be UNDERWHELMING! Can you add a new option for the vote: "nothing for me AGAIN this week"
Guess I finally have to link my eshop accounts and grab the bravely default demo. I'd hate to not link them and having linking them screw something up in the future.
BD is finally here!!!! Well at least the demo is
I'll be downloading that and will probably get X2 as well.
BOYCOTT NINTENDO!!!
I've written Nintendo many times (politely),
I use the comments section on my Club Nintendo surveys to voice concerns about a lacking VC lineup,
MiiVerse if full of similar complaints...
they are either unable or unwilling to let their VC live up to its potential.
Could have done wonders during the gaming droughts.
Want Dr.Luigi, but I'll wait for it to go on sale. Bravely Default demo it is!
O_O ive been waiting since 2013! O_O where is the pokemon bank!
I can't believe SMB3 is still not available here in NA,thanks Nintendo for lying to us
Castle storm already came out.... I've been playing the hell out of it.... Also, Dr. Luigi came out a few days ago....
What is wrong with Nintendo, if the vc games are out in other countries why not NA. SMB3 has been on 3ds in japan for a year. Its just plain ridiculous.
Not that it affects me as I am in UK, but didnt nintendo life state Super Punch Out was released on Wii U VC on 26th December ?
May get SMT IV or code of princess, already grabbed EO IV
Weak week after weak week..................
I'm getting SERIOUSLY tried of people whining/complaining that SMB3 & A Link To The Past ain't released yet on Wii U Virtual Console in North America.
Good Grief people...IT'LL COME OUT WHEN IT COMES OUT.
MEGAMAN X2!!!! MEGAMAN X2!!! MEGAMAN X2!!! AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!
downloading the demo now. Thinking of downloading Overclocked or Soul Hackers or both. Haven't decided yet.
@sleepinglion Megaman x2 uses the FX chip if I'm not mistaken.
I downloaded that Bravely Default demo, just out of curiosity, even though I know I have no interest in it. I lasted about 10 minutes with it... don't understand how people can stomach that jrpg garbage. You kids have fun with that one, I'm going back to CastleStorm and Dr. Luigi...
Bravery Defaulto!
@ShockeyRai People have a right to complain when you consider the fact that SMB3 has been out in Japan for a year, and Europe has already gotten it. Plus, Nintendo said it would be out by the end of 2013. The issue it not just SMB3 or Zelda: ALTTP, its the fact that NOA treats the Virtual Console like an afterthought. They break release dates, will take months to give us games that are already in other regions, or make us suffer through droughts where we get nothing.
NOA is horrible when it comes to VC games. I don't people are whining about SMB3. It should have been over here by now. The fact is, NOA has screwed with NA gamers before when it comes to the VC. This is not a isolated problem.
NOA has done this before, and most likely they will do it again. That's my main problem with NOA when it comes to this issue.
@Retro_on_theGo I believe you are correct as I think I've heard that before. I wonder what the holdup is on Starfox then...
Discussion of emulators and roms is strictly forbidden -Lz
@SahashraLA First of all, Nintendo will not care if you throw their product in the trash. It's yours to own and do with as you please.
Second, The Ubisoft sales had nothing to do with Nintendo of America...
@Retro_on_theGo Actually, a CX4 chip. Sorry, had to look it up. I didn't see anything about MMX2 having a FX Chip.
Speechless.....
BIRDMANIAAAA 3D!!!!
Hey, wasn't Shovel Knight supposed to come out today? Where is it? My 3DS can't connect to my university's wifi, so if it didn't come out today, I can't download it til Spring break! D:
By the ads on your site, I think I will be playing League of Angels this week.
SMB 3 should have been available at release
Bravely Default demo. Hope the reviewers are right about being the old school Final Fantasy games.
Darn it square you should've have the play limit unilmited like your final fantasy music game demo.
Yet another week SMB3 isnt on the WiiU VC. Not a problem since I'm enjoying it on the Wii VC Heh, heh.
What's the point of making it unlimited? Are you seriously gonna play the demo more than the amount shown?
been waiting for bravely default demo. here i go.
That's funny, considering that I got Super Punch-Out last week......
@DarkwingLz well, they promised us hours of content in the demo. Saying it's a side story that stands on it's own, so I think unlimited usage is nice
Wow, a single demo is all we get this week? Seriously Nintendo?? Where the hell is SMB3? You guys are getting very lazy up there at Nintendo HQ. Not cool.
christmas games are awesome
Bravely Default demo, I'm going to try it out, see if I like it.
No Super Mario 3...
I was about to say I was sorry for you guys, not getting Bravely Default already full, but then I saw all the Atlus games. It is you who should be sorry for us Europeans. Many of my DS, GBA and Gamecube games are NTSC imports as well, because we never got them.
@SahashraLA I'm from North America, and even I can say that you are in the wrong here. Nintendo has treated Europeans FAR worse than us Americans. For a good 20+ years, Europe was shafted by Nintendo and received games several months to even years after everywhere else, if at all. It wasn't until midway into the DS and Wii's lifespan that Nintendo actually started to care about Europe.
From what I'm reading here it sounds like a lot of Nintendo fans would feel a lot better if Nintendo just treated all of us equally. Club Nintendo rewards, Virtual Console releases... heck, even international titles could be made available in the eShops of countries that won't see them released in physical form.
$15 for Dr. Luigi is just bonkers.
BRAVELY DEFAULT! I'm way to excited for the full game plus the added collector's edition goodness
This is their release? THIS IS THEIR FRIGGIN' RELEASE??? Just when I thought that NOA couldn't get more lazy or pathetic, they go and prove me wrong. This is inexcusable. They either need to, A. clean house and get some fresh people in there who know what the heck their doing, or B., following sleepinglion, they should ditch this regional crap and treat everyone EQUALLY. I think that other guy was right from the last eShop update - we 'Mericans won't see Super Mario Bros. 3 until summer of this year at the earliest, provided we're lucky.
Originally, I felt bad for Europe and their lack of releases. Now I feel bad for N.A. Most weeks are heartbreaking for the Virtual Console. The release of Golf and Baseball were like tiny daggers in my soul.
Maybe next week some country will get Mario Sunshine, and we (N.A.) will get Burger Time and E.T. for a bundled discount.
I have no issue with a week like this. I can use the week trying to catch up with the already impossible game backlog I already have. Also my CCP XL came today so it's back to a life of too much Monster Huntering. Nintendo had to work overtime through that Christmas nightmare, taking it easy for a week is no bother. Enjoy some Bravely Default and chillax.
That Cubit title is a bunch of nonsense. It's a runner, not a platformer.
Ok guys, I'm playing and loving SMT IV, and I might get one of the others while they are discounted. Between Devil Summoner and Devil Survivor, which do you prefer?
@B3ND3R Oho I see, the demo is a separate game (sorta). That is a bit of a bummer. Oh well...
what a sad sad way to start off the year
Edge and Bravely for me.
Who hoo was looming forward to the BD Demo
@Baum897: Speak for yourself. We all got screwed here.
@Barbiegurl777: For once, you have a point.
I feel honoured that Australia is considered part of the European eShop sector... Look at all these awesome games and sales we get to enjoy
Considering that the Bravely Default demo is supposed to contain side-story content that'll take hours to complete supposedly not available in the main game, I'm disappointed that there's a play limit. I thought it'd have unlimited plays like the Theatrythm demo.
Hey, a good VC game, whattaya know! Thank you CAPCOM for stepping up to the plate for us. We do appreciate it! Already bought Dr Luigi day one, and wow is that game fun! Extremely addicting Virus Buster mode- I'm very pleased. I will of course be downloading Bravely Default Demo to coincide with my Collector's Edition pre order. And the star of the show is Mega Man X2! The game is actually very expensive now if I recall. I have the Mega Man X Collection on Gamecube (which is also super expensive, like $65 used nowadays), but I like owning all those games on Wii U with Gamepad play and virtual restore points. So of course I'll be buying the game asap!
@IceClimbers
In all fairness, it's not about "caring". It's about what sells. And the reason different regions don't get games sometimes is because of a lack of interest in the region. Europe is not nearly as pro-Nintendo as N.A.and there are WAY less consumers who buy Nintendo games. Like any publisher, games are only released in regions they expect to turn a profit. It's not as simple as "game made, now release it equally" because there's not an equal demand.
@AVahne
Why? Are you seriously the type of gamer that would play a demo over 30 times? I don't play ANY game that many times, I don't care how good it is. Too much of a good thing isn't always a good thing. Especially RPG's. Play once. Maybe a second time years later but that's it. Besides, it's a free demo, and free demos almost always have limits, though I find it hard to believe anyone would ever use up all 30 uses. Surely there are better things to do with a person's time than replay the same 2 hour segment over and over?
@JaxonH
Because they claim to have included "hours" of gameplay in this single demo and I may not want to keep the game loaded the entire time through? Are you seriously the type of gamer who would judge how others enjoy their hobby?
@AVahne
Not at all. Just rationalizing why anyone would need to play a free demo more than 30 times. Or rather, why someone would complain that they can't play a free demo more than 30 times. By all means, knock yourself out. I'm just struggling to understand the logic here
@AVahne
A question if I may... you say you may not want to keep the game loaded the entire time. I was under the impression that once you start the game save file, it only counted as one play. So a complete playthrough, regardless of how many times you quit and restarted, would only count as one. Am I mistaken? Does it actually count as a separate play each time you continue a game save?
Bravely Default is a hit. I love it. However, I'm bias towards RPG's.
Mega Man X2!? About time!
@Captain_Toad They fixed it to 30 plays awhile ago, for those that deleted and redownloaded the software, as well as new users downloading it.
Still no Shin Megami Tensei 4 in Europe, and these discounts also never appear in Europe... Atlus just doesn't have the same presence here...
I do not recommend Cubit, got it for free tho, you guys can check out my review of it by clicking on my profile and going to my website eshop gurus.
@Starzsixty9 I gave up before it was announced. got the all stars version for Wii, don't need a U version that isn't all star'd.
I just downloaded the Bravely Default Demo, it took me 5 minutes to realize that I will not like it. I'm glad that I didn't pre-order it.
@Retro_on_theGo Mega Man X2 does not use the FX chip actually...
I LOVE the demo!!! I put it on hard thinking my seasoned ff9 battle skillz would prevail but its actually more difficult and more fun than i had anticipated! Totally brings back ol ff memories... take my money already ninternder!!!!!!!
Since I'm STILL waiting on a certain game to finish downloading and need it done before I leave the city (along with all it's constant Wi fi service), I'll be getting the Bravely Default demo next week when I return.
Were the Atlus sales always set to end for 1/6? Just curious if any of the eshop sales have extended because of last week's problems.
Woohoo! just downloaded MMX2 and am playing it, will test out the BD demo later tonight. (Not sure if this was covered in recent posts, but the BD demo has 30 uses)
@benjamines
Yep EXCEPT for 3 exceptions, Watch_Dogs, Mario Kart 8, and Super Smash Bros.(Probably both) I have an online shopping addiction as well as being a digital sales junkie. I had to take measures against it since it was affecting my finances and I really have to save money to go on trips or move away(which I can't bring all my video game consoles or PC unfortunately)
@TruenoGT
Yep, I have enough games to last me quite a while but I just started getting back into World of Warcraft again SOOO yeah I have been slowly playing a few of my backlog trying them out. I'm also addicted to the internet to and I had to take measures against that as well, speaking of which I think I might log back on now.
To be honest I like the Denpamen 2 more than I like the current demo of Bravely Default. Talk about snooze fest. I sure hope the full version of Bravely Default is better than it's demo. The Millenium Girl Demo and game just seem so much better. I'm a little disappointed But will still be getting the full version. Streetpass gaming still stinks! when are we going to get a decent online RPG with a cool gaming community. Show us something! bring Dragon Quest X to North America and Europe
ducks the pot shots
Just the Bravely Default demo for me! Everything I have seen about makes it look like a winner!
dr luigi
@Bassman_Q Don't know if you'll ever read this, but just go to a Nintendo Zone to download games before spring break. No McDonald's around you?
I'm sad that this demo has a limited life.
