Big ups to Zelda II for pulling off a major upset, and nabbing all of the Zelda references.

Re: Watch: First US Wii U Advert Appears

RevolverLink

The commercial was a little on the cheesy side (as should be expected from the Big N) and wasn't great, but I still found it visually appealing and I thought it adequately showed off a number of the WiiU's more interesting gimmicks.

I'm surprised, though, that the ad didn't focus more on the whole "keep gaming on your GamePad even when someone else would like to commandeer the television" feature. I would think that would really appeal to the "family" demographic they're targeting here; I can certainly think of many times when something like that would've been convenient when I was growing up.

Re: Feature: Halloween Scares on Wii

RevolverLink

If I still have power on Halloween, I'll be getting my Resident Evil: Revelations and Lone Survivor on.

I'd play RE4 again, but I'm so desensitized to that game's scares now that even the regenerators and Ashley's hallway sequence barely register anymore.

Re: Feature: In Defence of Super Mario Sunshine

RevolverLink

I wasn't aware that Sunshine needed much defending. No, it probably wasn't one of the better games in the series, but it's still pretty damn fun and was one of the 5 or 10 best games available for the GameCube, which had a stronger library than a lot of people like to remember now.

Re: Feature: 20 Years of Mario Kart

RevolverLink

I can't even begin to calculate how much of my life has been spent playing Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart DS. The time spent just in their respective battle modes has to have easily topped 100 hours each.

Re: Bravely Default: Flying Fairy Japanese Box Art Revealed

RevolverLink

@Ren - I'd say that's still a more sensical (I'm positive I just made up that word, but it feels like it should be a real one, you know? I mean, "nonsensical" is a word, so you'd think removing the "non" prefix would leave a perfectly functional member of the English vocabulary, but I guess that's not the case. Oh, uh, sorry everybody. Very random tangent.) title than Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. At least you'd still know that you're playing as a plumber that runs and jumps with that name.

Anyway, goofy SE name or not, I still really want to play this game. And while I feel like I've seen better pieces of art for this game, I do kinda like this simple box art too.

Re: Rayman Legends is Exclusive to Wii U

RevolverLink

The "At least for now" sub-header is key here. Because there's no way Ubisoft won't eventually port the limbless wonder to every current system under the Sun. Heck, they're still porting Rayman 2 to stuff.

Re: Feature: Our Favourite Super Mario Games

RevolverLink

1) Super Mario Bros. 3
2) Super Mario World
3) Super Mario Galaxy 2
4) Super Mario Galaxy
5) Super Mario 64/DS
6) Super Mario Bros.
7) New Super Mario Bros. Wii
8) Super Mario 3D Land
9) Super Mario Sunshine
10) Super Mario Bros. 2
11) Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
12) Super Mario Land
13) New Super Mario Bros.
14) Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels

I suppose that's how I vaguely feel about the Mario platformers. There's definitely a big drop-off between 10 and everything below it, though.

EDIT: A more amorphous "tier" system, rather than somewhat rigid numerical rankings, might reflect my affection for them more accurately. 1-5 are among my all-time favorite games ever made and each could easily be my favorite flavor of Mario on any given day, while 6-10 are games I still had a great time with and enjoy re-playing ever now and again, and 10-14, while not without their merits, felt like let-downs, to varying degrees.

Re: Grab a Gold Nunchuk from US Club Nintendo

RevolverLink

I realize this is the often inscrutable Nintendo of America we're talking about, but I'm not sure why they waited so long after Skyward Sword's release to make these available. And for 900 coins at that, wow.

eBay would definitely be the way to go for me here... if I had a golden wiimote to go along with it, that is.

Re: Konami Admits That Castlevania Mirror of Fate Isn't Metroidvania, But It's Going To Be Close

RevolverLink

@SuperMinusWorld - Right now? I'd say Classic-style (the games from the 8- and 16-bit eras, they were largely, but not always, pretty linear side-scrollers, with a greater focus on careful timing and using the whip and various sub-weapons for combat), Symphony of the Night-/Metroidvania-style (still side-scrolling, they're sort of a fusion of "Classic" with very prominent Metroid-style non-linear exploration and RPG elements) and, most recently, the rather polarising Lords of Shadow-style (very much in the vein of modern 3D action games like God of War, to borrow a very common comparison) are the three main "schools" of Castlevania design.

Of course, there are also some entries that don't fit as neatly into one category as other games (Castlevania II had quite a bit of Metroidvania in its DNA long before there was such a thing as Metroidvania, Order of Ecclesia's first half could be seen as something of a bridge between the first two gameplay styles and Mirror of Fate is, preumably, attempting to mix in some of everything) as well as previous forays into 3D that failed to stick, but those are the three that have been successful for Konami.

Re: Nintendo Download: 2nd August 2012 (North America)

RevolverLink

@Blizzaga - I'm sure @FluttershyGuy was talking more about the games released under the Final Fantasy brand for the original Game Boy, like Adventure/Mystic Quest and the Legend trilogy.

Although if/when GBA games become available to the general public on the eShop, I would expect the GBA Final Fantasy releases to eventually follow - just keep in mind that SE generally likes to wait a good, long while before making their old games available as digital downloads, so I wouldn't get my hopes up of seeing even their original Game Boy games up for sale on the eShop anytime soon.

Re: Review: New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS)

RevolverLink

Could the reviewer, or anyone else that has had the opportunity to play this game, please enlighten me as to whether New Super Mario Bros. 2 allows you to save after every level? It's been an annoyance for me that such a feature was an unlockable in both of the previous games, instead of being available to the player right from the start like it should've been.

Re: Nintendo Download: 2nd August 2012 (North America)

RevolverLink

It feels really dumb, picky and first-world-problems-y to say this about a game that costs less than a Lincoln even when it's not on sale, but I'd be all over Super Mario Land if it was priced at a buck - I'm just not sure there's enough content there to last beyond a sitting and justify spending even $3 on it.

Anyway, it's a crummy week, but I'm behind on Game Boy VC releases at the moment, so it's no biggie.
