Re: Metroid Dread Had The Strongest Opening Month Of Any Metroid Game Ever In The US

Ravenmaster

The reason Metroid Dread had the best opening month of any Metroid game ever is because Nintendo has advertised the bejesus out of it. They've never advertised any other Metroid game as much as they advertised Metroid Dread.

Sure they've had one or two adverts for past Metroid games but with Dread they hit us with a new trailer every week for about 6 weeks prior to launch. They hit the world up on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube - as many outlets as they could. Essentially spending money to make money and boy did it pay off for them.

Of course it helped that the game lived up to the hype because if it hadn't then all the adertising would have been for nothing. But fortunately the game has great visuals and audio, great story and great gameplay. Even the voice acting was well done.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack' Trailer Is Now Its Most Disliked YouTube Video Ever

Ravenmaster

They should do it like Sky TV and let customers choose which packages they want.

£9.00 per year for Cloud Saves + Online Play + 1 retro library.
£18.00 per year for Cloud Saves + Online Play + 2 retro libraries
£27.00 per year for Cloud Saves + Online Play + 3 retro libraries
£36.00 per year for Clous Saves + Online Play + 4 retro libraries

I'd have gone for the £18.00 per year for Cloud Saves + Online Play + SNES and N64 libraries, since I hardly play NES titles and I already have the Sega Classics Collection for Megadrive games. But whatever...

Re: Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Version 1.3.0 Is Now Available - Wave 2 DLC, Adjustments, Fixes And More

Ravenmaster

I bought AoC when it was released but couldn't bring myself to buy the DLC. Frame were totally lame and the gameplay just felt like a repetitive grind-fest. I did enjoy the cinematics though and I hoped that this game would be a true canon prequel, since the devs coordinated with Nintendo's BotW team. But its obvious it was just fan fiction because the game's ending doesn't tie into the begininng of BotW.

Re: Wow, Nintendo Switch Was First Revealed Five Years Ago Today

Ravenmaster

The Switch has done very well considering its hardware was already aging when it was released 5 years ago. Nowadays its really showing its limitations.

What would be awesome is a Switch that can do 4K 60hz when docked and 1080p 60hz when in handheld mode. An 8 inch screen with slightly larger, more robust joy-cons would be nice too. And if it supported DLSS, Nintendo could keep frame rates high and finally implement some anti-aliasing to destroy those cursed jaggies.

Re: Random: Forget Dread, It's All About Metroid: Other M On Twitter Right Now

Ravenmaster

The game wasn't completely terrible. It was Samus' dialogue and voice acting that failed hardest in Metroid Other M.

In Dread, the voice acting was far better (even though Samus was only speaking Chozo, she didn't sound like a little wuss, as she had in Metroid Other M).

It's true Samus has been through a lot. Her parents were murdered by Space Pirates when she was a kid then she was raised by the Chozo, who trained her in combat and science. They taught her how to dicipline her mind. And by the time she reached the Other M era, she had already beaten several versions of Ridley in battle. It made absolutely no sense for Samus to go so deep into shell-shock when she encountered Ridley during Other M.

Re: Random: Uh-Oh, Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack - Overview Trailer' Is Generating A Lot Of Dislikes

The price hikes got me thinking - what will happen when Nintendo finally adds Gamecube and GBA titles to the online subscription service? Are they going to charge a further £18 pounds to grant people access to those titles? That would bring the yearly cost to £54 and would be a similar price to the Xbox Live subscription.

But Nintendo aren't giving those game libraries quality of life HD improvements. They're not giving them makeovers so that those older games look sharper and clearer on modern TV's. They're releasing them 'as is.'

Re: Teardown Suggests The Switch OLED Dock Is 4K 60fps-Ready And 'Future Proof'

Ravenmaster

@ModdedInkling As a portable console, the Switch is absolutely rocking. But when docked, it is severaly lacking in that it doesn't pair up very well with current gen 4K TV's. The pixilation from upscaling 900p to 4K does not sit well with the eyes. There's a bit of blurring and a lot of jaggies due to the lack of anti-aliasing.

Nvidia's new architecture 'Lovelace' will no doubt remedy this as a Lovelace SoC will support DLSS. It will allow AI upscaling to 4K without taking a huge frame rate hit and also keeping the visual quality as close to native 4K as possible.

Nvidia's Lovelace chips will be coming to RTX 4000 series graphics cards in September 2022. So we can probably expect they'll have the new Lovelace SoC ready for Nintendo's next console at a similar time.

Re: Teardown Suggests The Switch OLED Dock Is 4K 60fps-Ready And 'Future Proof'

Ravenmaster

@danemord The thing is, people DO compare the Switch to other systems and Nintendo needs to realise this. It is almost 2 generations behind now hardware-wise and we need the next Switch to be able to work in tandem properly at good frame rates with current gen 4K TV's and not look blurry with zero anti-aliasing. Just imagine it - a Switch that has all the great gameplay AND good graphics.

Re: Teardown Suggests The Switch OLED Dock Is 4K 60fps-Ready And 'Future Proof'

Ravenmaster

If Nintendo is putting HDMI 2.0 ports on the Dock, it's probably because HDMI 1.4 ports are no longer being made by chip manufacturers.

But this doesn't mean the Switch OLED will support HDR and 4K 60fps. For that, Nintendo would need a new SoC from Nvidia that supports those features.

The upcoming Ada Lovelace SoC will almost definitely support HDR and 4K 60fps when docked, as the chip supports DLSS.

Only trouble is, the Lovelace architecture won't be readily available until late August/early September 2022 (about the time when Nvidia will release its Lovelace RTX 4000 series graphics cards).

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Graphics - The Most Beautiful Switch Games

Ravenmaster

While I agree BotW has beautiful art style, I realise after watching people play it with mods on PC that it could have looked so much better. Less aliasing, fuller textures, higher, clearer resolution with 60+ fps makes a world of difference. It's a shame the Switch doesn't have hardware capable of getting anywhere near that level of performance. Hopefully Switch2 will be powered by Nvidia's new Ada Lovelace SoC and remedy the performance situation with DLSS and a bit more raw horsepower.

Re: Talking Point: Remember When People Thought Switch Would Fail?

Ravenmaster

The Switch's saving grace is that it does something none of the other consoles do - it's a hybrid and can be both a home console and a portable console.

Being a portable console is the Switch's strength. It's only competition up until now has been cell phones and the 3DS - both of which the Switch destroys. But, the Steam Deck is coming and piracy will allow Nintendo games to be played on it and it will be able to run Nintendo games at a better frame rate thanks to the more powerful SoC inside. So Nintendo is going to have to step up its game to stay ahead of the competition.

That said, as a home console, the Switch is abysmal and completely lacks the horsepower to run at decent frame rates above 1080p resolution. 4K TV's are the current gen norm now and the Switch is simply incapable of playing games at that resolution. Which means its low-res games look a bit stretched jaggy when played on these modern TV's.

The Switch definitely needs a successor console that supports DLSS.

Re: Hardware Review: Can You Really "Make Your Own Switch Pro" With This $100 Dongle?

Ravenmaster

The Switch does need a successor though because it’s processor was aging back when it was released in 2017. We see how it struggles when trying to run BotW even at just 30fps. A new SoC would bring slightly higher resolution and much better frame rates. 900/1080p images also don’t look great on current gen 4K TV’s. A new Switch model with an upgraded SoC would support DLSS and upscale the image without losing clarity or frames. The technology is there, Nintendo will inevitably make the jump soon enough.
