Re: Teardown Suggests The Switch OLED Dock Is 4K 60fps-Ready And 'Future Proof'

Ravenmaster

@ModdedInkling As a portable console, the Switch is absolutely rocking. But when docked, it is severaly lacking in that it doesn't pair up very well with current gen 4K TV's. The pixilation from upscaling 900p to 4K does not sit well with the eyes. There's a bit of blurring and a lot of jaggies due to the lack of anti-aliasing.

Nvidia's new architecture 'Lovelace' will no doubt remedy this as a Lovelace SoC will support DLSS. It will allow AI upscaling to 4K without taking a huge frame rate hit and also keeping the visual quality as close to native 4K as possible.

Nvidia's Lovelace chips will be coming to RTX 4000 series graphics cards in September 2022. So we can probably expect they'll have the new Lovelace SoC ready for Nintendo's next console at a similar time.

@danemord The thing is, people DO compare the Switch to other systems and Nintendo needs to realise this. It is almost 2 generations behind now hardware-wise and we need the next Switch to be able to work in tandem properly at good frame rates with current gen 4K TV's and not look blurry with zero anti-aliasing. Just imagine it - a Switch that has all the great gameplay AND good graphics.

If Nintendo is putting HDMI 2.0 ports on the Dock, it's probably because HDMI 1.4 ports are no longer being made by chip manufacturers.

But this doesn't mean the Switch OLED will support HDR and 4K 60fps. For that, Nintendo would need a new SoC from Nvidia that supports those features.

The upcoming Ada Lovelace SoC will almost definitely support HDR and 4K 60fps when docked, as the chip supports DLSS.

Only trouble is, the Lovelace architecture won't be readily available until late August/early September 2022 (about the time when Nvidia will release its Lovelace RTX 4000 series graphics cards).

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Graphics - The Most Beautiful Switch Games

Ravenmaster

While I agree BotW has beautiful art style, I realise after watching people play it with mods on PC that it could have looked so much better. Less aliasing, fuller textures, higher, clearer resolution with 60+ fps makes a world of difference. It's a shame the Switch doesn't have hardware capable of getting anywhere near that level of performance. Hopefully Switch2 will be powered by Nvidia's new Ada Lovelace SoC and remedy the performance situation with DLSS and a bit more raw horsepower.

Re: Talking Point: Remember When People Thought Switch Would Fail?

Ravenmaster

The Switch's saving grace is that it does something none of the other consoles do - it's a hybrid and can be both a home console and a portable console.

Being a portable console is the Switch's strength. It's only competition up until now has been cell phones and the 3DS - both of which the Switch destroys. But, the Steam Deck is coming and piracy will allow Nintendo games to be played on it and it will be able to run Nintendo games at a better frame rate thanks to the more powerful SoC inside. So Nintendo is going to have to step up its game to stay ahead of the competition.

That said, as a home console, the Switch is abysmal and completely lacks the horsepower to run at decent frame rates above 1080p resolution. 4K TV's are the current gen norm now and the Switch is simply incapable of playing games at that resolution. Which means its low-res games look a bit stretched jaggy when played on these modern TV's.

The Switch definitely needs a successor console that supports DLSS.

Re: Hardware Review: Can You Really "Make Your Own Switch Pro" With This $100 Dongle?

Ravenmaster

The Switch does need a successor though because it’s processor was aging back when it was released in 2017. We see how it struggles when trying to run BotW even at just 30fps. A new SoC would bring slightly higher resolution and much better frame rates. 900/1080p images also don’t look great on current gen 4K TV’s. A new Switch model with an upgraded SoC would support DLSS and upscale the image without losing clarity or frames. The technology is there, Nintendo will inevitably make the jump soon enough.

Re: Hardware Review: Can You Really "Make Your Own Switch Pro" With This $100 Dongle?

Ravenmaster

@twztid13 we are actually a due successor as of next year. Nintendo use a 5 year cycle for new console releases and March 2022 would be exactly 5 years since the original Switch launched back in 2017. Sometimes console life cycles get extended but that doesn’t mean Nintendo won’t bring out a new best console and carry on supporting the previous gen for another 2-3 years if it continues to sell.

Re: Nintendo's Share Value Trends Downward As Investor Analyst Gives 'Sell' Advice

Ravenmaster

This is what happens when you announce a drab, boring Switch OLED with the same stale architechture that was aging badly back in 2017. When instead, Nintendo could have announced a Switch Pro OLED that could handle 4K 60fps when docked and 1080p 60fps when in handheld mode.

I mean it could still happen if Nintendo gets a new Lovelace SoC from Nvidia in time for next year. That would definitely raise stocks. Another thing that would have helped would have been to release Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD for the Switch. Then the year after bring out Ocarina of Time HD and Majora's Mask HD. Then top it off with Mario Kart 9 and Metroid Prime Trilogy HD

Re: Talking Point: Should We Be Worried About Screen Burn-In With Switch OLED?

Ravenmaster

@contractcooker I don't hate the Switch. I hate that Nintendo are completely tone deaf when it comes to creating hardware that could run their games way better. All i want is a Switch that can run games at 60fps @ 1440p or 4K so that the image quality doesn't look like blurry crap on a current gen 4K TV. A new Nvidia chip with DLSS 2.0 could make that happen.

I mean look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2n-jhlQkhk

The guy in the video is running BotW at 1080p/60fps and all he's using is an oldass GTX1060 and a mid range 8th gen CPU. But look how much smoother than animations are. The color and lighting is richer, textures look better. It really helps bring out the immersion. No microstutters, just smooth gameplay.

Just for chitz and giggles, here's how good the game could have looked on a balls to the wall high-end gaming PC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwuiGTNoEJA

Re: Talking Point: Should We Be Worried About Screen Burn-In With Switch OLED?

Ravenmaster

@sanderev The 2019 Switch has the same processor as the 2017 Switch. All 3 models have it - they never changed it. The only thing the 2019 model got was a battery upgrade. Now the 2021 OLED Switch has the 2019 better battery, a better kickstand, larger internal memory and the new screen. All of that is superficial though and will not help the dismal performance with regards to FPS and resolution/ image clarity when docked.

Re: Talking Point: Where Does The Switch OLED Announcement Leave The Rumoured Switch Pro?

Ravenmaster

If i recall correctly, Nintendo brought out a Wii Mini right at the end of the Wii's life cycle. Then a few months later they released the Wii U to succeed it properly. But as we all know, confusing marketing and a lack of games has Wii U dead in the water from the get-go.

As for the Switch Pro, if it launched in March 2020 with BotW 2 as a launch title, closely followed by Metroid Prime 4, I reckon it'd do really well. Especially with DLSS 2.0 to keep frame rates and res high.

Re: Should I Buy A Switch OLED? Which Nintendo Switch Is Best For Me?

Ravenmaster

No point in buying a console with a processor that was aging horribly back when it came out in 2017.

It has trouble achieving 30fps @ 1080p. Low frame rate is a huge glaring issue that Nintendo seems to have glossed right over.

Switch OLED is a hard pass for me. They need to release the Switch Pro with a new Nvidia SoC that supports DLSS 2.0 so it can keep up with current gen 4K TV's when docked. Even 1440p 60fps would have been a worthy improvement. Sadly we'll have to wait even longer to have a crisp clean image and decent frames.

Re: Crytek Seems To Be Teasing Something Related To Crysis 2...

Ravenmaster

The first remaster wasn't great so I didn't buy it. Plus Crytek made it Epic Games Store exclusive on PC so that was another reason to dodge it.

I won't buy Crysis Remastered or Crysis 2 Remastered until Crytek agrees to put them on Steam or Origin. No way am I ever gonna install the Epic Games Store. Tim Sweeney is an absolute sleezeball scumbag and I hope he goes bankrupt.
