Chris Pratt might have been cast as the voice of Super Mario in Illumination's upcoming animated movie - due out next year, but for the good majority of Nintendo fans around the world, the original voice of Mario will always be Charles Martinet.
Although he voiced Nintendo's mascot before the N64 era, his voice was first heard by most in the 1996 video game release, Super Mario 64. Since then he's been the voice of the character in every major release and even contributed to all of the Mario spin-offs, such as the Mario Kart and Mario Party series.
How long will he keep going, though? At Fan Expo Canada this weekend, Martinet did a Q&A session about his rise to fame as Mario, and one fan asked how much longer he would continue to voice Mario. While his response might not necessarily be a surprise to hear, it's at least reassuring to know he'll be sticking around for as long as he possibly can. Here it is, courtesy of The Game Crater:
"I want to voice Mario until I drop dead."
Of course, if he is "no longer capable" of handling this iconic role - he's happy to hand it over to someone else:
"If someday I think I am no longer capable of doing it, I will tell Nintendo to look into finding someone else.’’
Although Charles Marinet won't be voicing Mario in the upcoming animated movie, he is still involved and will apparently be making several cameo vocal appearances during the film.
Are you glad to hear Charles wants to stay on as Mario for as long as possible? How do you feel about him not playing the leading role in the upcoming movie? Leave a comment down below.

Well of course he does, why would he want to give up such a lucrative position, and one that he clearly enjoys.
"Luigi though? Nah, he can stay with Charlie Day" - Charles Martinet, probably
I just read the piece at thegamecrater - strange that nobody asked him about the movie. To get his take and feelings on why he's not voicing Mario in it.
I didn't realize until this news, but...but I'm worried now...
Didn't Sonic got a voice actor change in the games when the voice of another media got popular (I think it was the 4kids dub of X back then).
I'm uber glad Martinet wants to keep the role, but we all know he is not calling the shots.
What...what if the movie is successful enough that Nintendo decide to have Mario's voice in the games made by Chris Pratt or a sound-alike for future titles?
shivers This is too scary even for Halloween...
@BakaKnight As much as I can believe Pratt is a nice guy, I am guessing Nintendo is going to have to shell out a LOT more for him to do the voice.
Not going to happen. Don't worry!
The voice has been parodied to hell and back but there's a reason for that. Martinet's voice is iconic, it's hard to separate the character from his voice. There's also a reason so many people were upset when Chris Pratt was announced for the voice.
I love the guy and if he's happy doing the role for as long as he's able to, then I'll be more than happy to welcome him in staying for the role. His voice definitely made Mario that much more iconic.
I hope that they will prepare for his eventual retirement for the role by recording as much dialogue / exclamation type sound effects so they can sample his iconic voice for years to come.
@BakaKnight the day Chris prat voices mario in games is the day humanity falls
Same here! Would like to hear that voice on every plumber until the end of time!
But first, defeat Alduin. Right?
As he's getting older maybe he should be voicing Wario more. He's really good at it.
mario kart EIIIIIIGGGHT!
Quickly, someone get him in a VO booth and record every possible combination of sounds and syllables. Save that data and you will never have to replace Charles
Well yeah. It's probably good money.
He thanked me so much-a for playing his game.
@BakaKnight Nah, Nintendo wouldn't be able to use a Hollywood actor for their games
He'd better be... wahoo
@CactusMan in the recent Direct “Mario will be talking a LOT in this movie!”
Love the people pretending that this dudes "Mario voice" is inimitable and that no one else could ever do it.
If the need arose, Nintendo could find some dude in the Philippines who could do an identical voice.
@KillerBOB comfort in familiarity. Seeing this wholesome dude’s name attached to all projects with Mario.
The only time when i heard mario talk was in the cartoon series.
Or am i missing something, cant remember.
Besides the "auw wauw wauw" "its a me! Mario"
I'm surprised how many times he's been rehired, surely he's said everything by now?
Fully expecting a Mario version of Hatsune Miku when he eventually passes...
@BakaKnight
Having someone like Chris Pratt as a voice actor in the movie is one thing, but having him voice Mario in the games seems needlessly expensive.
For an ingame Mario, without much dialog you also rather want a voice that sounds special, like it is currently. You don't need celebrities for that but special talents.
Met Charles Martinet several years ago right before Odyssey came out at a meet and greet at Ramstein AB in Germany, he spent several hours signing things, taking pictures, and doing the voices for people and was energetic the whole time. Of course the store on base (AAFES) got a fresh batch of Switches back when they were still fairly hard to find, so I picked one up and got him to sign both that for me and the pipe base of my 8 bit Mario amiibo for my son, and a portrait they were handing out, got pictures. Was really cool. Dude has lots of energy, and really seems to love the job.
Charles Martinet is truly a blessing in disguise. If he really enjoys voicing Mario this much, I hope he can continue to voice him for as long as he lives. The man deserves it.
It'll be upsetting when he eventually does pass away. Never met him in person but I would love too. I was already upset hearing that he wouldn't be playing Mario in next year's movie, at least he's voicing some background characters though.
Breaking news…..man wants to stay employed!
I cannot imagine, for the life of me, why this man would want to keep a cushy job doing what he likes.... ??🤔??
Changing Mario's voice from Charles Martinet is akin to stopping Peter Cullen from being the voice of Optimus Prime. Those are just some things that should never be done. And to me, it just would sound wrong in the final product.
Very happy to hear this, as the man is responsible for some of the best gaming moments of my childhood. He is going to be hard to replace when he is gone because of how talented he is, plus how many characters he voices. For those that have met him in person, I envy you all!
If Ninty was smart, they'd create a 'audiodatabase' with Martines voice akin what was done for Startrek.
Charles Martinet voice as Mario/Luigi, Wario and many others Mario character is so iconic, i can't see another person doing the voice of Mario/Luigi, Wario, his Mario voice is too iconic to be replaced.
For people of a certain age Mario will always be Captain Lou Albano. Look up "The Super Mario Brothers Super Show" if you don't know what I'm talking about. It was a cartoon show from the late 80s/early 90s that had Mario cartoons from Monday to Thursday and a Zelda cartoon on Fridays. To me, THAT is Mario's voice, NOT that squeaky Mickey Mouse sounding nonsense.
I hope that whenever he retires, Nintendo goes back to voicing Mario as the gruff sounding, masculine, alpha Italian-American plumber with a strong Brooklyn accent that I knew him to be as a kid. If that's the version of Mario that Pratt channels, then I would be all for it.
Don't get me wrong, I love Martinet - he's a talented and iconic video game voice actor - but I've always struggled with his interpretation of Mario in particular. Although over the last 26 years I've grown more than accustomed to it, I still prefer Albano's portrayal.
Of course, that's probably me speaking as someone who's 38 and dons thick nostalgia glasses when viewing the mid-late 80s and early 90s.
Either way, long live Martinet!
@CazSonOfCaz I only just saw your comment - you beat me to it and I obviously concur!
@basswitch He's not voicing it because it would offend some italians I'm sure. I'm guessing Pratts Mario is not going to sound very Italiany.
Nothing like have a job that you love! ( still looking for mine).
Hopefully Nintendo doesn't get bit by the Hollywood bug and turn the voice over to Chris Pratt like has happened with other beloved voice actors and their characters. I hope Charles gets to do Mario's voice for as long as he can and wants to.
@basswitch That would probably be a touchy subject, and could lead to a socially awkward conversation.
@Roam85 underrated comment
I met him at a convention before, and he was one of the nicest human beings I've ever met. I hope he lives a long life.
@BakaKnight They won't replace him, heck the guy who voiced Sonic in the movie isn't currently voicing him for the video games.
I am happy to see he still loves the roles, basically like Masako Nozawa, who basically has a personal attachment to Goku. He will always be the perfect Mario to me compared to any performance in the past or future (Never liked Lou Albano's version as that was too rough sounding and unfriendly.)
Mario wasn't a eunuch until this guy started voicing him =/
I wonder if we can get actors for Italian and Japanese Mario voices for starters.
@BakaKnight This is the same company who's too afraid of change to let the Paper Mario series give characters a more original name than "Captain T. Ode" because they're worried it will ruin their brand somehow. I don't think you have anything to worry about.
I do hope that when it gets closer to the end, he takes on an understudy under his wing. Somebody who has his blessing to take over when he’s gone
Removed - unconstructive
@Not_Soos I don't think it's about them being "afraid" or "worried".
