Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town came out last month in Japan, and quite a few players were disappointed with the way the game felt a little... unfinished. Common problems included bad framerates on the farm, long loading times, villagers with nothing to say, and not being able to submit more than one item at a time when cooking, donating things to the museum, and using the Makers.
Producer Dai Takemura wrote a letter to the players, apologising for the rocky launch and the unpolished features in the game, detailing a little bit of what would be in the game's first patch. You can read a summary of his letter in our news story, but to summarise even further, bugs are going to be squished, and later updates will fix a bunch of the pacing and balance, as well as improving the NPC dialogue.
It would seem that XSEED are not content to stop there, though, as Takemura once again took to the Bokujo Monogatari blog to speak about the game's future.
Here's a translation of the patch notes provided by sandfox177 on Reddit:
- This patch fixed some of the load times and bugs
- This patch was to address the stuff they considered an emergency, and now they are working to improve the overall performance and functionality of the game. In regards to the time for each update, they will continue to communicate. So, basically, they will wait until each patch is far along before giving us a date- He mention that there's a bug where if you save on the day an animal is born and meet certain conditions it will damage your save. As well as another, where it's impossible to progress if you get married on the first day of Summer. These [are] being patched mid-April and they suggest workarounds for the time being
Takemura said that the XSEED team is also working on fixing other issues for a later patch, summarised from sandfox177's translation:
- Further improving load times
- Improving processing load
- Improvement of makers
- Changing production during dialogue
- Adding more meal variations
- Improved operability of player
- Modifying and adding various types of text
- More bug fixes
To explain some of those points a little further: Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town has been criticised for its lack of character portraits, making it hard to see the emotions of the characters you're talking to. It's also been criticised for the fact that the player-character is pictured eating a full-course meal with fish and salad, no matter what you order at the café - even if it's just a cup of tea.
There are also difficulties with farm objects and crops popping in, which presumably is the "processing load", and the "improved operability" might refer to the fiddly hitboxes that make it hard to pick things up or put things down in the right place.
The first patch, 1.03, is already out, and will presumably be included with the game on Day One of the Western release (23rd March in North America, 26th March in Europe). The next patch will arrive in mid-April.
Are you a day-one Story of Seasons player, or will you be waiting until the patches neaten things up a bit? Let us know in the comments!

Man, what’s up with both of the Harvest Moon games coming out being subpar 😂 I’ll stick to Stardew Valley... which I still haven’t beaten.
@Highonda_H_S this one is WAY above the quality of HM, and if these patches/updates work out, it'll be a pretty good Story of Seasons game
When it’s finally done getting updates I may come back to take another look at this game, until then... no.
Just wait for the next rune factory. Really hope these games don't struggle to run like My Time at Portia did. I bought it on switch because of very positive reviews but everyone failed to mention the long load times and rather frequent crashes on switch. I find myself continuing to return to the older releases.
I got Stardew Valley so I am good. I feel that any Harvest Moon or Story of Season that comes out now has a high bar to surpass Stardew Valley. The fact that Stardew was done by one person and offers so much there is no excuse why a whole team of people can't do the same with Harvest Moon or Story of Seasons.
I have it pre-ordered but won't get a chance to play until the end of April, guess I luck out in getting a couple patches before then.
Another game released that is unfinished, go figure. I can't believe these companies that release games and expect us to wait months on end, for them to finish the game. Sigh.
Yeah. Probably won’t be getting this. Probably waiting on Rune Factory 5 and I have Friends of Mineral Town and Rune Factory 4 in the meantime.
Why didn't they wait for bug fixes before releasing.
Day 1 for this and Rune Factory (i will say I wish we’d gotten the same art style of RF5 but can’t win em all)
Absolutely shambolic.
Do you think Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons were competing for launch date and both ended up releasing a tad bit undercooked?
Yeah that pretty much settles it for me. Despite looking forward to it, this is gonna be a pass for me until they get the game patched up. This game went from "day one purchase" to "wait for a sale". Gonna have to echo the Stardew sentiment. I haven't played Stardew since the patches dropped on Switch and PC, this might be a good time to jump back in and see what's new.
@ATaco odd, I've been playing Portia for a while, no crashes so far. The load times aren't unnoticeable but I haven't found them obnoxiously long either. Unless you're comparing them to the nigh instant transitions of something like Rune Factory 4.😅
i'm really tempted to leave playing this until all the dlc comes out tbh, since then every npc should be in the game and i'll be getting the full fat experience
I cancelled my preorder of this as it really doesn't inspire much confidence.
It feels an extra kick in the teeth for them to be selling DLC for a game that is just unfinished and unpolished. I was really looking forward to this too ☹️
Never thought I'd see Marvelous try to pull a CD Projekt Red or Big Ben "we knew it was broke but shipped it anyway" maneuver.
I watched quite a few let's plays of this game I'm pretty much sold on it. All of the criticisms make it sound terrible but the game looks and seems to play a lot better than people are giving it credit for, I think. It reminds me of Pokemon SwSh were treated before release. I could be wrong, of course, but it looks fine to me. I love Stardew Valley but it doesn't change the fact that I don't like the pidel art aesthetic. SoS isn't the most graphically impressive game by a lot, but I like the aesthetic much more than SV.
They really shaved the loading times.
Is that a cow shrub??
I do love how they handled the supernatural aspect of this game.
Personally I don’t want portraits to come back. It’s time to make the 3D models expressive. I feel like they were trying for that but all the complaints about portraits may drive them in the other direction.
This is how you handle post launch support. I applaud them for listening to and acting on the feedback they got.
@KateGray
While that may be true, at least HMOW is playable without waiting months for updates and patches.
Bought Harvest moon on release for my partner but ending up selling it yesterday as it wasnt all that great, tbh this looks better despite the bugs, may have to get this for my partner next week keep her busy whilst I play monster hunter rise
might just wait til rune factory tbh
@KateGray
I think it's possible for Marvellous to rerelease the physical version with the new updates inside the cartridge, just like when they handled the issue of Calvin's Heart 5 event glitch from Tree of Tranquility USA version by rerelease the updated version with new disc color and different back cover.
@Highonda_H_S
I couldn't get into Stardew at all, but I prefer 3D for life sims.
Yeah no. I am skipping this and wait for Rune Factory 5 instead.
I wonder why they rushed it out before making sure it was properly finished? 🤔
I just hope the US release gets the patches and updates within a week of the Japanese one.
@KateGray Is Xseed saying "they" referring to Marvelous or is it sandfox177's translation? I find it really weird for Xseed to refer to their parent company as "they" instead of "we".
@Anti-Matter I believe switch cartridges are more often released with an updated version than BD games. I was surprised to see a friend's physical version of BotW not requiring an update in 2020. The box was identical to my day one copy but it was in version 1.6 or whatever version was the latest at the time.
For those who are disappointed by Harvest Moon and possibly Story of Seasons now too, give Littlewood a try! It’s such a sweet little game that gives you sort of a bite-sized life sim experience.
I had high hopes for the Story of Seasons franchise after Story of Seasons Friends of Mineral town brought back the amazing Harvest Moon 64/Back to Nature style only to see them screw up yet again.
How both Natsume and these guys can continue to let a dude who literally makes a better game on his own kick their ass is mind boggling.
@SpacedDuck i am still waiting for that true superior sequel to Back to Nature on PS1. Personally it and the GBA remake (friend of mineral town) still is the best Harvest Moon/story of seasons experience.
@SpacedDuck It does inspire some confusion, doesn't it? I genuinely would enjoy seeing a documentary detailing the differences in production between Stardew Valley and the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games. There must be some sort of explanation.
I bought Friends of Mineral Town, had very many criticisms, overall enjoyed it, and landed on the conclusion that it did not earn its $50 price tag. I've been watching a decent LP of this game, and although it also looks at least a tad enjoyable, it also looks to be rife with unfortunate problems. If I end up deciding to play it, I hope to find a used/sale copy.
I had my preorder cancelled for a couple of weeks. I won’t buy it unless they do a reprint that includes all of their patches and season pass. They probably won’t so I guess I’ll wait till the next game and hope it’s better.
I also cancelled the preorder, however in a year or so I might end up getting it if they fix it.
Good to know we're getting some patches that will hopefully improve this game considerably. I may delay starting the game until that mid-April patch. I'm still buying it day 1 though as I have it pre-ordered at my local game store along with the bull plushie!
@DarthFoxMcCloud I do hope that we still get the Bull plush as I lost my Stardew Valley bonus last December due to lockdown.
I phoned them and the staff said the bonus just weren't there.
It would not be them keeping them as I know the staff well and I have one person from there who is a personal friend.
They often contact me about promotional stuff/standees.
So I do trust my local GAME store quite a lot.
@Alundra-1998 I'm in Canada, we don't have GAME so I can't speak towards them. I ordered through EB Games which is my local game store. I hope they send me the plush since the special edition of the game is now sold out. I did pre-order months ago though so I should get it.
@DarthFoxMcCloud True.
But GAME UK is a (word not usable here) company and so I have my doubts.
I preordered Stardew Valley last year.
After lockdown, my games turned up, but, ironically, not the freebies.
That is why I don't trust GAME UK one bit.
@kategrey No review? Or just waiting on the patches?
Is anyone else having a hard time with the day clock not stopping while in buildings? Coming from the Mineral Town remake where time stopped while in buildings this feels very stressful.
