Last month, Nintendo revealed Project Triangle Strategy - a Square Enix turn-based tactical RPG, launching exclusively on the Switch next year.
So far there's been a demo, and even a survey for the game, and now, during a Game Live Japan YouTube broadcast, producer Tomoya Asano has revealed what players can expect in terms of length. The aim is to deliver around 50 hours of gameplay.
Here's the full translation, courtesy of Nintendo Everything:
"We are planning for the game to have multiple endings. As for the game time, that’s still up in the air… we always aim for around the 50-hour mark, but it never seems to turn out that way."
In a follow-up question, the producer was asked when players could expect to hear more about Project Triangle Strategy. Asano hopes it's at some point "before it gets cold".
What do you think about this upcoming turn-based tactical RPG that's drawn comparisons to other Square Enix titles such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Octopath Traveler? Would 50 hours be long enough? Share your thoughts down below.

@Beatrice
Your Mileage May Vary. I personally enjoyed repeating the prologue with different Houses as it gave new perspectives and insight on the same events because you're working with a different set of characters each time. On one path one character may say something or react to an event completely different from another which explains their actions later on in the game. It's very rewarding when you pay attention to these nuances as it explains their motivations in the second half which is very rewarding.
Of course, this isn't for everyone as it largely depends on what you're into.
50 hours isn't that long when you have to select 4 different options before performing any action.
Judging by how Octopath is effectively over 60 hours long, I feel like this game will be pretty long.
Three houses style.... 50 hours per faction.. 3 factions. 150 hours plus
After Octopath which is like 200 hours, I think 50 hours is plenty.
If it is 50 hours for a play-through & you might want to replay a lot of the game for the various choices, that'd be a lot .... the bit about it never ends up that way suggests to me that it'll probably end up being 60-80 for one go, anyway, though
Plenty enough. I already tried the demo and I liked it a bit so far.
Just... change the name pLz
Is 50 hours "long enough"?
Jeez, are people spoiled nowadays.
Quality over quantity. Always.
I know it's not coming for awhile, but I'm so hyped for this game!!
@Dezzy Exactly, and the character movements are so, so slow, feels like I'm walking through molasses. Personally I felt the demo was a confusing mess.
@JR150 In my opinion, they could have made 3H in a way that you could essentially play the second phase for any house more easily, instead of having to play the first phase every time. Although I really like the first phase, after having played through it twice, it's starting to feel like a chore the third time (and I shudder thinking that there's a 4th path as well). I know it would have been very difficult for them to design, but would help a lot to be able to do it like Eliwood or Hector modes in 7.
Looking forward to it, even though it's still ways off. The playtime is plenty for me. Really enjoyed the combat in demo as well as the visuals.
Hopefully they focus on the fun/quality aspect. Cuz I rarely put 50 hours in any game as adult that's not multiplayer. Simply just no time, with soooo many games these days that look fun/cool and also watching anime in spare time. Time is limited. Semi unrelated but That's one thing retro consoles did right back in the 64 era. Was prioritizing fun. More current games should skipp the fluff and get straight to the meat. Even if it means a shorter game. if alot of fun, usually means more replayability which is money well spent.
It's definitely near the top of my "to get" list. I had imagined the possibilities for a FF Tactics-style game ever since playing Octopath Traveler; that 2 1/2D aesthetic recalls the beauty of classic retro RPGs but also brings them fully into the modern era.
Regarding game length, I want the ride to last as long as possible while hopefully avoiding being bogged down by redundancy or too many extraneous tasks or dialogue that keep you away from the battlefield for too long (an issue which I found to whittle away my interest wandering around the sprawling monastery in Fire Emblem: Three Houses). FF Tactics took me around 75-80 hours, but an absurd percentage of that was grinding through countless optional battles with the same maps and enemies, while Vanguard Bandits' 20-plus hour runtime was kept leaner by a complete lack of such engagements; every battle helped to advance the story.
At any rate, I have high expectations for Project Triangle Strategy. Hopefully it will achieve the right balance to join the ranks of the all-time classics in the SRPG genre.
I wish squenix games were shorter.
It's cold now.
50 hours with a game that is full of dialogue to read, means that you can half the actual game play.
But I won't be buying a game that reads like a book. I buy a game for the playing. Story driven games are usually Japanese type fairy story plots that are beyond childish.
The demo was pretty enjoyable and gave me FFT and Tactics Ogre vibes. Definitely interested in how this game turns out.
My most anticipated game of next year.
Im pretty sure this game is going multiplatform.
I couldn’t get past all the talking in the demo :/
I like the demo. Im hungry for more tactical game. Definitely a buy from me.
Sounds like a pyramid scheme to me!
tugs tie awkwardly
I'll... be here all night? probably?
@zool Nah JRPG isn't for you.
@Miu read my comment again. I have played plenty of jrpgs and they are not all bogged down with mind numbing text. 😃
@zool Sorry for jumping to conclusions.. heard good thing about this game but I guess it's too much text.
@zool no worries man... go back to COD and other triple A generic games where everything is handed to you on a silver platter.
@Reaktor also known as games where you don’t have to sit through 2 hours of dialogue to actually play the game again!
They could definitely streamline the game a little, even in cutscenes.
At least they released the demo and seem to listen. I'm sure it will improve after another year of development.
Needs to be shorter.
I loved Octopath but felt the boss battles were ridiculously long which spoilt the experience for me and ruined the game.
These days too many good games and not enough time. I'd prefer an oustanding 20-30 hours over monotonous 50+ hours.
This is where games like Rocket League, Asphault, Fortnite etc succceed if you have a spare 15 -20 minutes you can a couple of rounds in.
This is why I 'd prefer Miitopia over Project Triangle .
Shame really could be really good. Perhaps in another life.
One game I would really put the hours in is 'Advance Wars ' for nintendo Switch.
@Miu for me there is to much text, judging by the demo. But I do understand others like a story with their game.👍
No need to attack each others' taste in games, guys. I've played enough across all genres to realize that observations from both sides often have merit. Experienced gamers can indeed recognize when a developer has "padded" their game with nonessential and/or redundant features that detract from the core experience, but mileage varies.
But it's not always so cut-and-dried. For instance, I've been playing through Trails of Cold Steel with a friend to introduce him to the series. For reference, we've played through all three English-patched Scenarios of Shining Force III (190 hours total, and loved every minute of it) and Dragon Force for the Sega Saturn (BOTH of which DEMAND remasters or outright sequels!!!) as well as Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3, among others. Because he really enjoyed all of those, and because we're both aspiring writers who appreciate world-building and complex character developments and interactions, I figured he'd eat up Trails. But surprisingly he's been anxious to finish up the first Cold Steel and wants to take a break from it for awhile afterward because, in his own words, there's just way too much dialogue and exposition for his taste. I've been able to mitigate that somewhat by skipping optional sidequests and dialogue, but where I'm a completist, his preferences are affected largely by the lack of time he has to devote to games anymore; he likes to keep things moving.
Now, I LOVE the Trails series specifically because of those lavish details (although I have to admit that not having every single member of your party make a remark in seemingly every single cutscene would help to streamline and expedite things). But its balance more toward story and character development than gameplay/battles isn't for everyone; for some folks it's all about combat, exploration, unlocking characters, weapons, or secrets, or some other facet.
I guess the bottom line here is that people's tastes vary, even when it comes to what they prefer regarding the same genre of videogames. There's no "right" or "wrong" about it, it just comes down to what you personally get out of your own experience. It's why we all chose this hobby in the first place, right?
@Beatrice lol - if the gameplay loop is good then yes - I want to do the same thing over and over again.
just like Fire Emblem.
50 hours in a RPG without an open world is quite common. And is good that it will have multiple endings, a la Three Houses. I like it so far.
@AtlanteanMan well said I just wish more people understood that there’s no incorrect game to play and that ultimately as long as you enjoy the game that’s all that really matters
Named in 2023
That’s good. That’s the sweet spot. With 100 max for completionists like me.
It took me an hour to do just the first battle on the demo along with all the cutscenes. So that really doesn't surprise me.
Quality over quantity every time. I much prefer games that value the player's time and intentionally don't drag everything out with filler and generic fetch quests.
Also, this is SE. Project Triangle Strategy will make the jump to PC eventually.
People keep saying quality over quantity. Hmz can't it be both ? Also so far this looks kinda good.
@BrintaPap it pretty much will at some point but for now it is NS exclusive
@Tyranexx yeah like after a year and then it will be switch console exclusive
@jcboyer515 the majority of people here do just come to troll or complain. I have ignored tons of users just because of this.
At the moment this game and Pokemon Legends are two of my most anticipated games of 2022
50 hours of fun would be absolutely ok. Also: Turn based tactics games are absolutely what I want.
Problem of this game is: It seems to use the same engine as Octopath. And I didn't like it there (didn't buy the game after playing the demo for two hours or so) and I didn't like it here...
But it's ok. As long as Banner of the Maid exists and Tiny Metal exists and Warhammer Mechanicus exists and Mutant Year Zero exists... there are really enough TBT games I'm fine with.
I'm sure a number of people will complain about "only" 50 hours, but some of us have busy lives and 100+ hours becomes an unmanageable amount of gameplay. Looking forward to a cool rpg I actually have time to get through.
I’m sorry, but why did this get a almost 5 minute trailer in the direct? If you see it in a q minute trailer, and like this genre of games, then that one minute is enough, but Nintendo needs to know, that playing a 5 minute trailer, isn’t going to get me into the game.
@Darlinfan : Who said anything about "entitlement"? (not that I would even use the word in the modern rhetorical/platitudinous sense)
Perhaps you ought not to take general comments/observations so personally and make a bunch of assumptions about somebody you know nothing about. And to borrow a line, "that's a bad look."
I expressed incredulity at the notion that a game of 50 hours was implied to be of an insufficient length, especially as the genre is notorious for artificially prolonging the running time via repetitively tedious means such as grinding, general sluggishness (cough Gen IV Pokémon), backtracking etc.
@anoyonmus I'm expecting them to do the same thing to this that they did to Octopath. Which is fine - the larger audience, the merrier. I was poking fun at the article tagline since "Switch Exclusive" very likely won't age well.
@Tyranexx yeah
50 hours? Wow, I’m really excited for this game!
@Grayjedi13 Excellent pfp. Chad Kanan
@AtlanteanMan really appreciate your viewpoint here. And really really appreciate your love for Shining Force and Dragon Force!! I played thru the first two Shining Force and Dragon Force back in the day but never got a chance to play SF3. Would love to. And I would be so freaking stoked if they revived these series faithfully/remastered/anything
Lol I can probably get 50 out of the demo alone. No, it will be longer.
The demo was amazing, and that was just 1-2 hours...
SRPG tend to swallow many many hours, do to the intricate nature of the individual fights.
I'm sure 50 hours will end up being a conservative estimate for most players. ^^
Octopath Travellerer. Then the inferior copypasted Bravely Default that kept alot of visuals but not the good parts, couldnt even play through the demo. This one atleast looks better. But the lack of imagination for the name is laughable and I hope they change it, I guess they felt since they removed the Project from Octopath Traveller they had one to spare..
