It's not just Mario that inexplicably suffers a cull on 31st March; you'd be excused for forgetting that another Nintendo title is due to drop off the Switch eShop at the end of this month.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light is in its final hours on the store; it was pretty big news when it was announced and then finally released on 4th December last year. Previously a Famicom exclusive, it was the first time that the series debut had been released outside of Japan, with a handsome physical edition catching the eye.
Though the limited production run of the collector's edition is perhaps understandable, Nintendo's decision to limit its release window on the eShop was met with some bafflement, albeit it hasn't generated the same attention as the upcoming Mario purge.
Of course, as the first game in the series this title is relentlessly old-school, but if you want a digital copy on your Switch now is the time to pick it up.

I know I'm the smart-alek who keeps making fun of NL for talking about Mario's death every day, but I legit forgot about this one lol.
Did they ever fix the emulation of this?
So what your saying is we need to buy this now? Alright, it has been boughten.
Oh, another topic about of end of any games that we know since that they were announced?

Calling it: this'll be added to NSO the next time they announce something about that.
@Ralizah It’s pretty bizarre. You’d think that games like this would encourage more people to subscribe than random Jaleco rubbish.
I'm good, I bought it at launch.
Still a great game, it's cool that it was given the official translation it deserved and an actual release that lets you have it for keeps (Though a proper physical release would've been much better).
But obviously this limited release BS puts a massive blemish on all that goodwill. Hopefully everyone who wanted managed to get it.
@Ralizah that wouldn't work with Japanese users who have had it on NSO for ages.😅
@nhSnork They get completely different games, it's not even the same app. Pretty sure they have a Famicom one instead.
Finally Nintendo Life acknowledges Marth is being locked up in a dungeon come March 31st!
Also, bought this a week before release, so I already have it.
@Ralizah That would be super unfair for people who paid for it though.
@DjinnFighter not really. You guys will be able to play it outside of the service if you decided NSO wasn’t for you. It’s yours forever.
@TossedLlama It appearantly had the same color/brightness problems as the NES and SNES Virtual Console games released on the Wii U.
@Sinton I think I heard it was because of concerns about epilepsy but don’t quote me on that.
I wish they would have done Mystery of The Emblem instead
They really should have translated more than just this (ideally, all of the NES/SNES games) and issued a proper physical release. I would have easily thrown the AU$90 asking price at this if it had included a cartridge in the box, but I wasn't paying that amount for a box full of cardboard and plastic that I'll look at once and maybe again in 10 year spells.
The older games haven't aged well though, so I would have preferred full-blown remakes instead.
Thanks for the reminder and welcome back @ThomasBW84 !!
@Ralizah I wouldn't be so optimistic. Though adding it to NSO now after profiting off of FOMO would be perfectly scummy.
I noticed that Nintendo's already removed the SMB 35th Anniversary Direct, Super Mario Bros. 35 trailer, 3D All Stars trailers and trailers for this game from the Switch news section.
Nintendo's just emulating the Satellaview, they give, they take. If they throw this into NSO it's just extending its eventual departure.
I like Nintendo, but God, sometimes they can be scummy.
@Kimyonaakuma I have yet to launch my copy after picking it up last week, but isn't it essentially the same as Famicom original except in English? As for NSO Japan, they actually have both Famicom and Super Famicom versions there.
@Silly_G the Jugdral arc may be eligible for another Echoes treatment, but the Archanea dilogy has already been remade on NDS. Not that New Mystery ever got an official English release.
Whelp. Don't want to buy it. Guess it's time to learn 日本語。でも、私は学ぶが大嫌いです。
@Grumblevolcano : The Mariocalypse is truly upon us...
This reminds me, I need to use the download code I got in my Collector's Edition.
question, if I bought the physical limited edition that includes a code, I will still be able to redeem it past this date right?
This one I take exception to.
I can let go of the All Stars collection as those games can, and likely will, be released separately but dropping this one game makes no sense to me.
Picked it up today reluctantly since it would have been wishlist fodder otherwise. Ughh part I'm part of the problem I know, still sucks. :/
Despite being a hardcore fan of the series, Fire Emblem on Switch is not a great release. While they added some admittedly nice features such as bookmarks (save states) and a rewind-like feature, the game's visuals are way too dark and there's an odd audio crackle that frequently occurs. The game itself is decent enough and it's a cheap download, but given the issues it has I don't think missing out on it should rob anyone of their sleep. For the most part it's more enjoyable on basically any other device.
With that being said I still managed to find enjoyment with this release and it was really nice to see it get an official translation. I played it all the way through for what it's worth, I just wish more care had been taken in the porting process. It's clearly running on some sort of outdated emulator. Hopefully someone will find a way to dump the rom of this game so that once it goes down, people can at least download the rom and check out the official translation. It's actually a pretty nice translation and not just a direct copy of Shadow Dragon like I assumed it'd be.
I used to love to play this one on an emulator a long time ago. But now on the Switch it lost its charm somehow to me. Too many more polished games round the corner and too little time.
Will be downloading soon but I still say removing it is really dumb. What do i know though. Anybody else miss the virtual console? I hear the first fire emblem is really hard. Is that true? I've played both genesis shining force games without too much trouble.
I picked it up, but I think I ran it for a total of 30 seconds before realizing I like the Shining Series a whole lot more than this series.
I think I just remembered another series I want to see return.
Seems like it’s all a trail run for something later, nothing has indicated that they’ve overcome the production problems of “HD” gaming that they talked about with the Wii U, they can maximize profits if they do this for a new game when their output is low especially now that they’ve ran out of the majority of mainstream Wii U games to port, all signs point towards there not being enough resistance to prevent which would be why this was a trail run.
@nhSnork Japan has actually been getting less Super Nintendo games while we got less NES. If anything, we're both going to be getting the games that we don't have in each other's regions
Wait I havent been paying attention. This is getting removed too? What the actual hell
@Zeldafan79
It's hard but most of the difficulty comes from critical hits and enemy reinforcement spawns, both of which are out of the player's control. This can be mitigated with the use of the rewind feature which basically does an automatic save state every turn so you can rollback to any turn you want. The game also has a lot of garbage characters that aren't worth using, bad growth rates (though FE2 is worse in this regard), and characters who don't promote such as Barst, Julian, etc. All characters have 0 RES too so mages can wreck you. If a mage is fast enough to double, that'll pretty much kill most units. (RIP Cain from my first run.)
On the upside, Marth is actually really good in this game and the stat boosters are beyond broken, often giving +6 and such boosts. You can easily get through the game by mostly using Marth and spamming any stat boosters you find on him, especially boots. The AI also tends to prioritize Marth so you can win a lot of maps by simply parking him in a good defensive position and let him go to town. There's other good characters such as Jeorge, Ogma, Cain+Abel, Caeda, etc.
It's harder than both the Genesis Shining Force games but if you keep a relatively small army and use the rewind+bookmark feature, it's perfectly manageable. If you can beat the original Shining Force then you should be able to handle the original Fire Emblem.
On a semi-related note, I love Guntz from Shining Force.
Talk about a game you regret buying. This is it right here for me. Meh, maybe I’ll put time and effort into this game... eventually.
Not buying it, ever, because of the limited time thing. I at least voted with my wallet, as futile as it might be. I do not want limited digital releases to become a norm.
@Gridatttack Yes you could but do redeem it as soon as you can, after a year passed that code will become obsolete meaning if you hadn't use it and got to the anniversary of the day you purchased it, you're basically keeping a code that is just a paperweight at that point.
I recommend everyone buy it if not just to encourage Nintendo to translate and release more Japanese-only games
@everynowandben We'll have to buy Famicom Detective Club too then.
preps wallet
@Zadaris I'm planning on it 👍😎👍
@Screen - May have needed weekly reminders about it like we did Mario?
@Paraka
Weekly? We were being told almost daily, sometimes more.
If I missed the chance to buy this, I would only have myself to blame, I'm thankful for reminders in moderation.
@Screen - Sounds like we're overdue for another Mario 35 article.
I wanted to see if I like the game before making a purchase so I downloaded a translated ROM. I don't care much for the game, and frankly, I find it frustrating. I'm not too fond of turn-based battle games, especially when it's 1-on-1. I have three Pokemon games, but only one of them is a traditional Pokemon game. The others are a pinball game and a Panel de Pon clone.
Not a single Charlie Murphy’s reference? Y’all need more Chapelle Show in your life.
RIP Charlie “The Darkness” Murphy and is BFF, Rick “F yo couch, Coca ina is a hell of a drug” James
Actually just got this for free after saving up enough myNintendo gold points. Might not have aged very well, but I've enjoyed all FE titles I played since getting into the series with Awakening. And yea, I even enjoyed both Fates games.
@Gridatttack Is your pfp from Stella Glow?
@Ghost_of_Hasashi I doubt it. I checked and it didn't had an expiration code. Would be bad business practice, as elsewhere codes don't usually expire.
@kducky11 yes
But the "physical edition" isn't even that. It was a download code in a box.
Dumb, but then again, Fire Emblem Fates SE. Nintendo is probably the only company on the planet who wouldn't rerelease that game (minus all the other trinkets that the collectors can keep to themselves) some time later.
No thanks. I’ll buy a game because I want it, not because Nintendo decided to try and create a “need to buy it” by making it a limited time release 🤷♂️
Don't give your money to these scammers. Play the improved DS remake on your 3DS instead. I'm sure they'll also eventually release a Switch port of the NES version of Fire Emblem Gaiden without mentioning that a superior remake exists for the 3DS.
Almost unplayable by modern standards. Good riddance.
@progx I don't agree. (And I was not talking about me, I didn't buy the game).
I think that a lot of people wouldn't have bought the game if they knew it would be included with NSO a couple of months later. Yes, if you bought the game you keep it forever, but I can easily imagine a lot people not caring about that.
@DjinnFighter if you don't agree... but you're not talking about yourself... then are you talking for people YOU know?
Nintendo wouldn't announce it for purchase THEN say it'll be on NSO. I was saying, they may EVENTUALLY put it on the service. People in Japan have been enjoying it on the Famicom app through NSO for a long time, it has been for sale as well.
I wouldn't be surprised if Super Mario 35, Fire Emblem (NES) and the All-Stars game are precursors to other plans Nintendo has for the future: N64 app (w/ Super Mario 64), Super Mario Sunshine/Galaxy eShop downloads (individual) and classic game collections for purchase.
I recently beat this game and it was awesome to experience the first FE, but damn it was a bit clunky and I'm very happy to have the excellent refinements of the modem sequels. Now I'm really really enjoying Three Houses.
