Update: Offer also applies to North America:
With over 26 million subscribers, Switch Online has done well for Nintendo. Granting players access to online multiplayer, cloud saves, free trials, and monthly NES/SNES games, it's also faced criticism for lacking greater value, especially when compared to PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold.
Back in May, Nintendo said they're looking to increase NSO's appeal, and December saw Switch update 11.0.0, adding new features. Following that, a new initiative has just launched across Europe and Japan, offering Gold Coins worth 10% of a new (or renewed) NSO subscription.
Available now until May 10th, only annual subscriptions benefit from this scheme, but that applies to individual memberships and family plans. How many Gold Coins that earns varies between regions, but here's what you can expect:
- Individual Plan (12 months) - £17.99 / €19,99 / ¥2,400 Yen - 180 Gold Coins in the UK, 200 Gold Coins in Europe, 240 Gold Coins in Japan.
- Family Plan (12 months) - £31.49 / €34,99 / ¥4,500 Yen - 320 Gold Coins in the United Kingdom, 350 Gold Coins in Europe, 450 Gold Coins in Japan.
There's no announcement on whether North America will get a similar scheme, but we'll be keeping an eye out for any developments. 10% isn't the biggest incentive going, but considering Gold Coins can reduce the cost of your next eShop purchase, but it might be enough to tempt a few players.
Is there anything you'd like to see added to Switch Online? Would this tempt you into signing up or renewing? Let us know below.

I already have NSO and I live in North America so I guess that's cool.
That's still not particularly enticing as a one-time bonus.
This should really be a permanent bonus for NSO members, maybe limited to year long plans.
I have NSO for 24 months, so I don't benefit from this either way. Not like I was planning on using this subscription further anyways.
If only ARMS was still doing party crashes, I'd sign up in a heartbeat. Or rather, I probably never would have stopped doing the online thing. Other than that, I have no use for it, though I kind of wish I did.
My subscription expires September so I will buy the year extension now. The main discount is the 100€ 2 game vouchers obviously, that covers the 20€ cost
£3.15 such a great incentive
need to grab another in april so i might as well
10 days till Monster Hunter Rise. You all need subscribtions
OF COURSE they would offer it JUST ONE WEEK AFTER I ALREADY RENEWED %#%)(#@%)(*)(
I hate their bad timing.
I renew tomorrow. Please bring this to NA!
I have it but have almost no use for it. The only reason I got it was because I was needing to repair my Switch and wanted my save files on the cloud. When it runs out I won't renew it.
I also already renewed a few weeks ago, but 3.50 is not really something to be enticed with.
I get a lot of use out of the SNES app, and I still play Splatoon 2 online occasionally. I recently used Balloon World or whatever it's called to farm coins for the last few costumes in Mario Odyssey, but otherwise I don't use NSO much.
Still works out more expensive than buying from CDKeys.com
I thought for a sec it was gonna be that you'd get 10% gold points with NSO compared to 5%. That was optimistic
At first I was like "WHOA!" And then I was like "whoa....."
Thats because nintendos online service is worthless.
This benefit purposely excludes Switch early adopters & dedicated Nintendo customers. Everyone that got the Switch in 2017 bought & renews NSO in september-december, the period when NSO was introduced.
"Please subscribe to our service. Please?"
-Nintendo
Mine just renews automatically, how do I find out when it runs out?
Edit: No matter found it under my Nintendo Account, then Shop, then scroll down to NSO and then it shows you, wow not complicated or anything
This would be nice as Covid 19 has forced me to do a lot more digital and online shopping.
I am having second thoughts about renewing this year. I only use the cloud saves and occasional Tetris 99 matches during the Maximus cups.
@Aneira pretty much my thinking. Mine ran out ages ago, but with MH Rise due out, I was going to resubscribe anyway
Maybe when Fall Guys comes out I’ll cave...yeah, I’ll probably cave 😋
Mine expires in late April but I can already get a code cheaper from ShopTo anyways
Nintendo auto charged me for 12 months last week. Didn't get any gold.
I'd find it more convincing if they added GB or N64 games to the service.
Do all the members os the family get the gold coins?
I already have it does that mean I don't get gold points?
I'm up for renewal soon. But I dearly wish it had some monthly freebies like PS Plus does, or at least a steady stream of older games. How long can they delay the inevitable N64/GC games, jeez...
meanwhile PS plus subscribers got the Final Fantasy 7 Remake in March and last month Xbox games with gold got Gears 5 and the RE 1 remaster.
I mean yes - nintendo online subscribers pay way less - it's just kinda sad they try to make $3-4 a big deal, while their games rarely ever cost less than $79 - nintendo really sometimes can be quite insulting lol
Our Family account in up in June, so maybe.
I currently have about $30 sitting there doing nothing in eShop credit so if I can use that, might as well. Oh and about 690 gold points, should just about do it.
@Tulio517 the primary account holder does. Aka whomever the credit card used belongs to
They couldve done this in November to reward people who are tripling up on NSO subscriptions since 2016.
I used the two $60 games for $100 voucher over 2 years because I could only find 1 game I wanted in the first year and needed to subscribe again to use the second, and ended up buying a game I didn't really think was worth $50 before my second voucher expired. I also turned snes virtual console on for about a minute and turned it off, I would hate to pay a fee to be allowed to continue my save on a snes Rom, so I won't invest time playing these old roms. I bought a nice gaming pc so that I can play games online without paying a fee. With the two for 100 offer over, a snes mini gathering dust, I cant justify, or even think of any incentive for me to buy this "service".
Genuinely curious; for those who thought the service would actually improve after Nintendo started charging for it, how are you feeling about it now?
Useless for me since my annual Family plan doesn't expire until September. Guess that's what I get for signing up for the service on day 1 back when it launched.
