Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom?

Oh_Well

I’m only through the 2nd dungeon, so I’m not far enough along to properly rate it. Im definitely enjoying it, but I will say that I don’t love the way combat is handled, and I think the game would benefit tremendously with fewer echoes. I think focusing on a smaller number of quality echoes would make the interface way less clunky. I do think the puzzles are generally good though, but I hope they get a bit more challenging as the game progresses.

Re: Even More Aero The Acro-Bat Games Are Heading To Switch This Year

Oh_Well

The Aero games are decent enough, but I think Zero is an underrated SNES game. There’s no complicated licensing with this, so it feels like the whole series is primed for a Limited Run collection. I’ll probably wait to see if that gets announced in the next few months. If it doesn’t, I’ll download Zero then.

Re: 'The Karate Kid: Street Rumble' Chops Its Way Onto Switch In September

Oh_Well

I have a huge spot of nostalgia for the first Karate Kid movie, and this looks pretty good. That said, I’m not sure I’ll pick this up. I’m already all in on the upcoming GI Joe beatemup, and the forthcoming Power Rangers beatemup will also likely be something I pickup. With all the excellent games in this genre like Shredder’s Revenge, Fight N’ Rage, Jitsu Squad, and Streets of Rage 4, I guess I’m feeling a lot fatigued with the genre. This may just be one that I don’t absolutely need to add to the collection.

Re: Poll: What's Your Switch Game Of The Year Of 2024 So Far?

Oh_Well

Prince of Persia: Lost Crown is not only my game of the year, but it’s also become a top 3 metroidvania of all time for me.

Unicorn Overlord is second, and Pepper Grinder rounds out the top three. I haven’t gotten to Animal Well yet as I’m waiting for my physical copy. I expect it will be incredible based on what I’ve heard.

Re: Top 100 Best Nintendo Games Of All Time

Oh_Well

@Not_Soos I’m with you on BotW and TotK. I don’t particularly like the formula. They’re undeniably very well made, and they feature some really great concepts, but they are near the bottom of my list of personal favorite Zelda games. My biggest want from Nintendo is a brand new top-down Zelda, but I’m probably very much in the minority.

Re: Top 100 Best Nintendo Games Of All Time

Oh_Well

This is nightmarishly difficult, but here’s my Top 10:
1. Link to the Past
2. Donkey Kong Country
3. Mario 64
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
5. Metroid Dread
6. Ocarina of Time
7. Super Metroid
8. Luigi’s Mansion 3
9. Super PunchOut
10. Super Mario Maker 2

Re: Disney Remastering Sega Genesis Platformer Gargoyles, Switch Release Confirmed

Oh_Well

@Serpenterror You’re probably right, but I keep holding out hope that one of the boutique publishers will see the demand and try to negotiate a port, which they could then sell under the standard pre-order system to minimize risk. I realize there’s still money and time that would have to go into the port, but then I look at this Carbon engine, which is just the emulator that’s running the Jurassic Park Collection, and I think it couldn’t be that cost intensive to give us another rom dump of these games.

Re: Best Metroid Games Of All Time

Oh_Well

Here’s my top 5
1. Dread - exploration is on par with Super, but I really appreciate that this is a harder game than Super. Best boss battles in the series.

2. Super - Best music of maybe any game ever. Best atmosphere of the series. This is really the 1B to Dread’s 1A

3. Fusion - I actually think the way that SAX can appear to almost show up more randomly is way more terrifying than the EMMI zones in Dread, but this is also a more linear game.

4. Prime Remastered - It’s Prime with the best control scheme, and it looks absolutely amazing. The extreme backtracking at the end is kind of off putting for me though.

5. Zero Mission - Just a very solid remake of the original game.

Re: Poll: Would You Pay $70 For The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

Oh_Well

I probably only buy 3-4 games on day one every year, so the extra $40 a year isn’t enough to prevent me from buying a game if I’m super interested. With TotK though, I was thinking of waiting on it anyway. BotW, while it is a really well-made game, is actually one of my least favorite Zelda’s. Maybe the hype will eventually get me, or maybe the reviews will convince me to pick it up in it’s first week, but it’s odd that this is the least excited I’ve ever been for a Zelda launch.

Re: Feature: Our Predictions For The February 2023 Nintendo Direct

Oh_Well

My predictions:
-Reminder that fire emblem is out
-New promo/trailer for Kirby
-Couple new games announced for NSO
-Release date for Advance Wars
-Info on final fantasy pixel remasters
-Probably a new HD 2D game from Square
-Mario Movie promotion
-No new full Mario game, but maybe a Mario 35 type game or Mario movie skins in Mario maker
-New Mario sports game
-DLC info for Mario Kart and Splatoon
-indie/3rd party sizzle reel
-tears of the kingdom gameplay trailer

Re: Nintendo Direct Confirmed For Tomorrow, 8th February 2023

Oh_Well

I’d love to see a brand new 2D Zelda, though there is literally zero chance of that being announced anytime in the immediate future. A proper 3D Donkey Kong would be pretty rad as well (also unlikely). I’d love to see Nintendo give us something starring Bowser; a Diablo-like dungeon crawler with the typical Nintendo style could be pretty interesting. Maybe they could take the approach that a new villain has taken over the Mushroom Kingdom, and Bowser has to fight through the new Tyrant’s minions to reclaim his status as the land’s top villain.

Re: Poll: Rate Your Favourite Switch Games Of The Year 2022

Oh_Well

2022 has been an odd year for me as I played a ton of retro stuff, mostly NES. That said, Cuphead DLC is honestly my game of the year. Second place would go to the three waves of Mario Kart 8 DLC. I can’t think of any other year where DLC has been my game of the year, let alone my top 2 picks. Shredder’s Revenge would probably be third.

EDIT: Forgot about Tunic. I’d slot it in at 3 and bump TMNT to 4

Re: Poll: What's Your Game Of The Year 2022 So Far?

Oh_Well

As far as games released this year, Shredder’s Revenge is my favorite, but Cuphead is downloading as I type, and I suspect it will be incredible. Triangle Strategy is really great also, but I haven’t finished it.

The best games I’ve beaten this year would be Batman NES and Gargoyle’s Quest II, also on the NES.

Re: Capcom Reports Another Year Of Record-High Sales And Profits

Oh_Well

Happy to see this as I really want to see Capcom remain independent amid all the consolidation these days. Strong financials should give them less of a reason to consider a buyout. Still, with all the money and success they seem to be enjoying, I’m still a little jaded about the decision not to bring the Disney Afternoon Collection to Switch. In fact, If they put it on a physical cartridge, I would probably shell out a full $60 for it.

Re: Talking Point: Should We Still Be Pre-Ordering Games?

Oh_Well

I find myself uniquely positioned on this topic because I tend to pre-order a lot of games even though I generally think the process is worthless in most cases and the physical trinkets mean pretty much nothing to me. For me, it’s kind of an odd budget thing. If I find myself with actual paper money in my wallet, which is rare, I almost always use that for a pre-order because the alternative situation usually goes as follows: I have $20, I think I’ll just grab a Coke next time I stop for gas. Okay, now I’ve got $17, but singles are dumb, so maybe I guess I’ll grab a candy bar. Damn, now the total is 5.25, so now I have four singles and a pocket full of change. Repeat this process two more times and that $20 has literally disappeared into nothing of any substance. So yeah, I’d rather avoid that so situation and know that the games I really want to play on launch day are sometimes paid off before I get them

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 12th)

Oh_Well

I’ve never been a huge Pokémon fan, but I started Arceus yesterday to see what this new format is all about. I’m only about 2 hours in, so I’ll continue with that. Elsewhere, I just finished Uncharted Lost Legacy, which was pretty good. I’ve also decided that this is the year that I finally cross most of my unbeaten NES games off my list. I finally took down the Joker in Batman last weekend, and now I’m working on Ninja Gaiden. I’ve pretty much memorized the patterns through level 4-2, but it’s starting to get significantly harder.

Re: Nintendo Direct To Air Tomorrow, Wednesday 9th February 2022

Oh_Well

My biggest hope is for a release date for TMNT Shredder’s Revenge.

I’m not expecting a whole tone out of this. I think we’ll end up seeing quite a lot on Kirby, Triangle Strategy, Advance Wars, Lego Star Wars, and maybe the new Mario and Rabbids game. I’m guessing we’ll get a few indie announcements, which is always welcome. I’m also expecting some more announcements for NSO, maybe Goldeneye. The article says it will focus on games coming in the first half of this year, so I don’t think we’ll see anything on Breath of the Wild 2 or Prime 4, but I do think Nintendo will try to end the show with something strong.

Re: Awesome Triangle Strategy Trailer Introduces Frederica And New Gameplay

Oh_Well

I’ve already got my preorder in, and I’m eagerly awaiting this one. Still, the name is atrocious. From the trailer, the three-pronged scale suggests that the narrative will be a struggle between three competing powers/influences/kingdoms, so I see what they’re getting at with the name, but it’s still not good. Here’s a 10-second attempt off the cuff: “Triad Conflict”. That certainly isn’t perfect, but I’d argue it’s better than what we got.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life's Biggest Gaming Regrets

Oh_Well

I still can’t believe my stupidity as it relates to this particular topic. I had a genuine copy of a Donkey Kong Country Competition cart, which is absolutely one of the rarest SNES relics there is. Now, I paid good money myself for this cart, like $400 in 2005ish. Fast forward to 2015; I desperately needed some cash, so I sold it for $1500. Sure, I made a good profit, but I had a ton of other games at the time that I could have offloaded, stuff that would have been replaceable. Instead, I elected to sell the one thing that is damn near impossible to replace…Oof

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 22nd)

Oh_Well

Just started Astral Chain, so that should occupy me for awhile. I’m also about halfway through Scooby Doo and the Night of a 100 Frights on GameCube. I do love the old Scooby Doo cartoons, so I thought why not on this. It’s not incredible, but it’s surprisingly good as a platformer with light metroidvania aspects. The voice acting is pretty spot-on too.

Re: Feature: The Best Hidden Gems And Underrated Switch Games Of 2021

Oh_Well

I thought Kaze was brilliant, if a little derivative. Blue Fire is the only other one I played from this list. It was legitimately great, but also a tad disappointing because it was so close to being something truly special. With a few changes here and there, it could have been one of my all-time favorites.

Re: Poll: What's The Worst Legend Of Zelda Game?

Oh_Well

I’ve never played Triforce Heroes or the two DS games, so I can’t speak to any of those. Personally, I put Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild near the very bottom. SS is significantly better now that it has a more traditional control scheme, and I know I’m in the super minority on BotW. It’s not at all a bad game, it just didn’t really click with me at all. On the other hand, I’m one of the few that really loves Zelda II. Link to the past, Ocarina, Majora’s Mask, Link’s Awakening are all phenomenal as well, while the original Zelda, Windwaker, Minish Cap, the Oracle games, and Link Between Worlds are genuinely great but probably second tier for me.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online's N64 Games Need Some Work

Oh_Well

I upgraded last night and had immediate buyer’s remorse. I didn’t notice any performance issues, but I basically upgraded mostly to be able to play Mario Kart 64 online. It was probably stated to the contrary somewhere, and I’m assuming I just didn’t do enough research, but I was expecting some kind of matchmaking service for the game where you could jump on and play with random people online. Unless I’m missing it, that doesn’t appear to be the case as it seems to be a friend invite system only. I guess Im stuck with it for a year now, but I’ll probably just go back to the regular package next year.

Re: Talking Point: How Many Hours Is A 'Short' Game For You?

Oh_Well

7-15 hours is pretty much the sweet spot for me. If I’m only casually interested in a game, I’ll still take a chance on it if I think it’s less than 15 hours. I generally only play 15-25 hour games if I’m sure I’ll like them, and I usually avoid games 25 hours and longer altogether unless it’s something I’m absolutely dying to play.

Re: Poll: Why Do You Collect Video Games?

Oh_Well

Lots to unpack here for me. I have about 200 games in my collection, which is small compared to some collections that number in the thousands. It’s almost all stuff I either really like or really want to play but haven’t gotten around to yet. I kind of like the idea of owning my top 10-20 games for each of the systems I’ve enjoyed over the years. I would say I’ve beaten probably 80% of my games, and I probably only have five or six games that I keep solely because they are rare or valuable. I also really like to display my games, which comes with its own set of rules. For disc-based games, Switch, and Genesis, it’s always CIB for me, and I never buy greatest hits or Player’s Choice because I can’t stand having spine colors that aren’t uniform. For older cartridge-based games, I’m fine with cart only, except for some of my all-time favorites. I’ve gone out of my way to own mint-in-box copies (not sealed) of Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country, Turtles in Time, and NES Ducktales. Collecting those boxes is really just pure nostalgia for me.

I feel like my physical collecting days may come to an end after the Switch though. I basically stopped buying physical PS4 games because only a fraction of the game is usually on the actual disk, which makes it no better than a digital copy. Throw in the fact that so many games now need day-one patches, and it starts to become a question of how playable some of these games will actually be in 10 years, even if you have the disk.

Re: 'Disney Classic Games Collection' Gets Rated For Switch, Now With Added Jungle Book

Oh_Well

I’m always happy to see more retro games re-released, but I already bought the double pack and don’t think I’d be in again for Jungle Book alone. Now, if this were the Disney Afternoon Collection, I’d happily double dip after already buying that for PS4. Hell, if the afternoon Collection would come out physically, I’d probably pay a full $60, though I would hope they might round it out with a few more SNES titles like Aladdin (which is better than the Genesis version in my opinion) and Goof Troop

Re: Huntdown To Get Wider Retail Release And Second Run Of Collector's Edition

Oh_Well

@RupeeClock perfectly said. I ordered the collector’s edition because, at the time, it was the only physical option available. Had there been a standard edition for $30, I absolutely would have gone that route instead. I’ll probably end up getting the standard edition now and selling the collection on eBay. At least I know I’ll probably double my money.

Re: Talking Point: What's Your Switch Game Of 2021 So Far?

Oh_Well

Blue Fire for me so far. It’s a really great game, but it’s also a tad disappointing because it was so very close to being something truly special. A few tweaks here an there, and it could have landed amongst my favorite games of all time. I would absolutely still recommend it to any Zelda or Souls fan. Other than that, I’m currently playing Ori and the Will of Wisps. I know it’s not a 2021 game, but it’s shaping up to be the best game I play this year.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 17th)

Oh_Well

I’m in the middle of Blue Fire, which I would wholeheartedly recommend to any Zelda fan. The platforming in the game is also incredible.I might get it wrapped up by the end of the weekend, then I might give Skyward Sword another chance. It’s been my least favorite Zelda game, but I also wasn’t initially fond of Twilight Princess until I played it a second time for its Wii U remaster

Re: Talking Point: Everyone Has A Bad Game They Love, So What's Yours?

Oh_Well

Ark on Switch. I’ve lost a good chunk of my life to this game. I put about 1500 hours in it on PC when it first launched. Then I heard it was getting ported to switch, and I was curious. Despite the awful reviews, I wanted the game portably. The reviews weren’t wrong, but I still put another 400 hours in the Switch version. In fact, maybe I’ll revisit my survivor profile this weekend and do a bit of raiding.

Re: You Can Now Get A Platinum And Gold Point Coin Pin Set From My Nintendo (US)

Oh_Well

I ordered my pins, but I'm in the process of moving, so I had them shipped to my new address, at least that's what I thought. As it turns out, I don't know my new address as well as I probably should, so they've been sent to a different address in my new city. I tried to contact Nintendo support today and was told that my order is already in the shipping department and that my only option would be to try to set up an intercept with USPS. I'll give that a shot, but I'm not very optimistic that I'll ever actually see those pins.
