Paul W.S. Anderson's upcoming Monster Hunter movie hasn't had the smoothest of rides to market; initial shots from the set caused concern, as did the fact that the film places US marines from the modern-day in a fantasy setting – hardly something that is faithful to the original game series. Then there's the fact that the movie is launching during a year of lockdown, with cinemas all over the world closed for business.
Still, subsequent images and trailers have slowly but surely resorted our expectation that this might – might – actually be a decent flick. The latest Chinese trailer has inflated those expectations even more; not only do we see a lot of cool monsters in this one, but there's also a focus on using tactics to take down beasts (as well as gain materials to use in future battles, just like in the games) and we even get a short glimpse of a Palico chef. Will all of this good stuff be enough to make the film successful, both commercially and critically? Who knows, but at least it's looking a bit more promising now.
Budgeted at $60 million, the Monster Hunter movie arrives on December 3rd in Europe and December 30th in North America. It stars Milla Jovovich, Tony Jaa, Ron Perlman and Diego Boneta. It was due for launch in September, and there were reports that it would be pushed into 2021 – but it seems like it's just going to make 2020. Just.

Actually looks pretty good.
It's a video game movie, it will still suck ;p
"Just. Like. The. In. Games."
Ron Perlman is in this movie? A must see, then.
Still looks bad lol
Thats how you do a trailer! Now i am excited.
Also fan of tony jaa, Ongbak loved that movie. The bruce lee of thailand haha.
Normally I completely ignore anything besides the very first trailer of a movie I might have the slightest intention to watch. But I'm glad I watched this, I feel more inclined to spend around 1h30min of my life for it.
Will wait until its free on Sky Movies, have no expectations as have not played the games
Love the Resident Evil films, even though they have nothing to do with the games except the character names.
Great cast. Low expectations.
I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'm still not convinced. I love me some Monster Hunter, but the games themselves don't even really have a story. That's fine for the games, but a movie needs a little more narrative to hold it together.
Still a ridiculous basic premise.
@jump Like how sonic and detective pikachu did?
Won't change anything from my perspective on this very movie(trash).
@Kalmaro that's proving my point video game movies suck ;p
I don't think there's enough psychedelic drugs in the world to make me feel hopeful that a Paul Anderson video game movie will be worth my time. I know what he makes, and good movies aren't it.
@Daniel36 ironically considering what I see of that Palico Chef's appearance and how he seem to look like World's palico chef...
... I can't even say it's -entirely- inaccurate for the game considering it actually already had these crossovers event with both Final Fantasy XIV and even the Witcher(Geralt doing an "investigation" in MHW's world after being rifted there to them find a Leshen from his own game and interacting with the MHW crew before that with actual dialogue options meant to emulate his game was... a thing).
Like, literally involving "rifts to other worlds" kind of things.
Would have been a lot better to release a trailer like that first. It still would have taken a beating (it's a movie based on a videogame so that's a given) but at least it showcases more of the main source material. Making the "first look" of the movie piled high to the sky with so much that has nothing to do with the source material (present military, "transported" storyline, etc.) starts things off with that bad taste in the mouth.
If anything, this Palico lowers the hope even more
I like the first trailer more: explains the premise, and I don't remember that annoying music.
Anyway, I'm sure the movie will be dumb, loud fun. No chance in hell that I'm going anywhere near a theater to see it, though, so they'd better figure out a VOD distribution plan.
Eh, still looks like a standard action movie with duller/more washed-out versions of the games' monsters. Same goes for the Palico honestly; not nearly as good of a transition of a cartoony character to film as Detective Pikachu or the final version of Sonic.
At minimum, hoping it'll be as adequate as the first Resident Evil movie but definitely won't be rushing to watch it when it releases.
I really love movies and i really love videogames but to put a videogame concept into a movie just never works. At least not for me
Well, it looks better than the last teaser. I guess we really just needed an actual trailer to make an impression. And it looks good. While the cast looks forgettable and the dialog is generic, at least the CG and the world looks really, really good.
I'm telling you guys, the first time Tony Jaa knee kicks a Rathalos, all will be forgiven. Let the man do his work.
@jump Define suck, those movies were the first video game movies to actually do well in the box office and get positive attention, or are you just saying you believe they were bad?
@Kalmaro Doing well at the box office isn't an indicator of quality ;p
Wait, is that a wet Ninja cat?
Cautiously optimistic, will wait for impressions from those who have seen it. Doubt I'll be watching it for awhile anyway, unfortunately.
@jump it's an indicator that there's interest though. Then from there you had reviews from the general audience saying that they enjoyed the movie.
So when you say it sucked what did you just mean that's your opinion or did people hate the movie and I just wasn't paying attention?
I mean, it is better. But given the director's track record and the very limited number of scenes in the two previous trailers, I'm not convinced that it'll be good.
Eeehhh... This trailer is much MUCH better than the previous: lots of nods to the games, we get to see more monsters and weapons, some actual fighting.
But in the end of the day I expect the same treatment Transformers received
Modern day uwe boll strikes again...
I feel like the language barrier will ruin the movie. Great idea in theory, but seems like an easy out for a dumbed-down script.
I'm more of a Cha-Cha and Kayamba guy, so I'm still not falling for that.
LOL REALLY!? Still looks terrible to me. Real bottom of the barrel. Not funny, awful looking at parts, bad concept, etc. It's great seeing the actual monsters from the game but as a film it looks like something I wouldn't waste money on. I can skip the waste of time and just play the games instead if I want to see the monsters that bad. Sheesh other people have such low standards. No wonder the film industry bothers less and less. They know folks are simple enough to just want to see a movie regardless of the integrity behind it.
I’m fine with video game movies being second rate...but then I was a child of the 80’s/90’s
Great looking movie production, but I don't see a compelling story. It doesn't build confidence for the mario movie.
Movies and games follow different story structures, and they don’t always mesh together. I am yet to be shown a movie based on a game that comes out great.
waiiiit monster hunter movie? why was I not aware of this?
I won't be paying to watch it, that's for sure.
@Kalmaro I’m with Jump on this one, I think both of those movies were solid 4/10s. Never had high hopes for Sonic but thought Detective Pikachu was shaping up nicely. Sadly both very mediocre, dull and safe movies that did little to give me hope for a good video game film.
Unless, of course, you’re counting Scott Pilgrim’s sort of pseudo-video game movie, which was a brilliant 8/10. I’m glad lots of fans seemed to enjoy them though
The series is chock full of memorable and catchy themes that would translate well to a movie adaptation. Watch them use absolutely none of them and instead go for a generic modern pop rock soundtrack like you just heard in the trailer.
And that Nerscylla you just saw is the equivalent of of the original movie Sonic from its first trailer (you know the one).
Nope, doesn't feel me with more hope (but neither does it take it away, for my expectations can't get much lower.
Also, "Still, subsequent images and trailers have slowly but surely resorted our expectation that this might"
Looks like your typical special effects laden popcorn flick which falls squarely into the "mindless entertainment" category.
@MajorasLapdog Yeah, and that's cool. I don't mind people just thinking the movies were bad.
I was wondering if they meant the movies flopped or something and I wasn't paying attention. From what I say, people were generally okay.
I love it. Looks like what I want out of a MH movie.
Lest we forget, the Paul WS Anderson directed the pinnacle of videogame movies: Mortal Kombat.
Nice but still don't want to see it. Reasons, movie trailers will fool you at some point and make the movie look good until you watch it in person, main character is a boring girl, the movie seem to have too much of MHW in it and really none of the original MH stuff in it.
Lost all hopes when it became White washed.
Still so much no lol
TONY JAA FTW!!!!
Ugyvtvubgpvdo for ot
Big F'ing nope, still...
So... Many... Explosions...
The only "good" thing in this trailer, was the Palico cook...
"Let's do this" It's a pre-set expression on the chat and I said that all the time in multiplayer hunts right at the start of a quest.....I'm getting hopeful on this movie
@HollowSpectre But Uwe Boll has never made a genuinely good movie like Event Horizon, which still holds up to this day.
I kinda wanna see this now. Love the palico!
@jump “haha video game movies suck because status quo! lOL!!!”
@jump ...Detective Pikachu wasn't that bad...
@Mordridakon Absolutely false. Boll has quite a number of films that are excellent. Ambitious, emotional and with clear perspective.
Who would watch a Monster Hunter movie for a compelling story? 😆 You watch a Monster Hunter movie to see big monsters being hunted. Or that doesn’t interest you. Whatever. If this delivers on big fun monster fights, even if it contains next to zero plot, it’s a win. It’s the execution of the action that I’m skeptical about.
When i first saw it I thought garfield??
Looks better than expected, but still looks bad. Maybe it's because the concept behind Monster Hunter just doesn't interest me as a film.
Anybody else notice the Gore Freaking Magala??????!!!!!!????
Can't wait to be disappointed by this one, even if the monsters just make it eye candy... I'm in.
Its still going to suck
I honestly don't care to bother with the trailers, I'll just wait for reviews and the bluray release. MAYBE I'll see it then, then again Rise is coming out next year, and Stories 2...
Less soldiers and more Monster Hunter is a step in the right direction...
Still gonna suck. What a weird game to make into a movie! There are so many better options.
Looks exactly like the kind of silly over-the-top energy and action you see in the game!
Ok I will say it, I'm pretty hyped for this movie now, It might be worth watching this movie. I think it would be a movie hardcore monster hunter fans love.
SPOILER ALERT: all characters will die except for Milla Jovovich.
Wait - are those hints at humour that I just caught? In a Paul Anderson & Milla Jovovich movie ?
@Toshiro_Baloney I noticed you didn't say what they were...
never seen any movies by this director and I have zero expectations for this, but I think it's odd to view Detective Pikachu as a "video game movie." Pokémon may have started as a game, but it's been adapted into so many mediums (including film) that the idea of a live-action/CGI animated film for the series isn't a huge jump. I for one thought it was a pretty solid movie that will be a favorite among today's kids who have watched it and loved it. I think it's probably one of the recent films that they will find greater appreciation of as they grow older and learn more about art (a few other good, family-friendly movies from the past several years that I think will do similar are Kubo, Captain Underpants, Spider-Verse, etc.)--and I think those sorts of films deserve some respect. just viewing cinema through the lens of awards or how well us adults are entertained by them, and not their wider cultural power, is I think shortsighted.
