Many of you will have already had a go at Nintendo Switch Sports through the recent online play test, but last week we were invited by Nintendo to experience the full fat version of the game without even having to be online. It's been over 15 years since we first woke up with the dreaded Wii elbow after Wii Sports' enthusiastic reception, so we were eager to see how this new Switch entry in the series changes things up from the Wii U version, Wii Sports Club. Does it knock itself out of the park, or is it a bit deflated?
Let’s do things in the order we did them, starting with Volleyball, which frankly can get in the bin. The premise is unsurprisingly the same as volleyball in real life, but the execution is really boiled down and simplistic. You swing up with the Joy-Con to bump and jump, raise it above your head to block and set, swing down to spike, and that’s it.
In truth you could simplify any of the Wii Sports-like games this way, but this one is so slow and repetitive as to be devoid of any kind of excitement. There’s almost no tactics as far as we could tell, it’s little more than a basic test of timing as all your movement and direction of attack are handled for you by the AI. The best word we can use to sum up Volleyball is simply boring, which is quite disappointing, but thankfully we have a few sports left to look at.
Badminton was our next affair, and in total contrast to Volleyball we had a grand old time with it. Being familiar with real life badminton ourselves, we found it weirdly close to the real thing, and our instincts telling us to physically move around the room despite such an act resulting in nothing but confusion is testament to that.
The best addition is the drop shot, an absolute staple in any good game of badminton, and it’s achieved by simply swinging whilst holding the 'ZL' or 'ZR' button. It’s an obvious but elegant solution, and results in a fast, engaging and genuinely thrilling little virtual sport. Part of this enjoyment was allowing ourselves to become absorbed by what was happening, but the fact that that happened at all is really impressive.
Bowling is another (unsurprising) triumph; if you’ve played the Bowling in Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, you’ll have played this already on Switch — but considering it was pretty much perfect before, that’s no bad thing. Compared to Wii Sports there’s a notable increase in precision required, meaning that the game is more challenging and also more satisfying to play. Top marks.
Chambara was another standout for its simple but fast-paced action. We had a go with the charge sword because we had to be different, and the combination of blocking, striking, and reading your opponent was genuinely gripping from start to finish. We’re definitely keen to get our hands on the Twin Swords so we can go all General Grievous-with-two-hands-tied-behind-him on everyone online.
Football was more of a mixed experience overall. It’s undoubtedly the most complex and involving of the sports on offer — which is to its favour — but it’s also surprisingly slow. There’s eight players on the pitch at any one time, and as is customary according to real-world physics, only one can be reasonably in control of the ball at one time. This results in a lot of waiting around (or everyone mindlessly chasing towards the ball at once, like four-year-olds playing a Saturday morning match) which didn’t really feel all that satisfying.
What was satisfying was when we actually scored some goals. The slow pace definitely helps to make each goal feel substantial, and the Rocket League-like giant ball means every player can’t help but see what a substantial header you performed forcing the sphere into that goal-hole. We’re definitely looking forward to playing it some more to see if there’s more underneath what we’ve currently seen.
We also had a punt (football joke) at the Penalty Shootout Mode, which whilst very basic was a decent chunk of fun. The leg strap makes it, of course, and we can see this being a jolly good laugh with a bunch of friends taking turns trying not to kick their drink over.
And lastly, Tennis. What a shame.
Wii Sports’ Tennis was very basic in its premise, but it was breaking new ground. Switch Sports’ Tennis takes some of the DNA from Mario Tennis Aces, such as the timing element (early shots go one way, late shots the opposite) and different swings resulting in different types of shot, but it feels less substantial here somewhat. Perhaps it's because we didn't manage to spend enough time with it to fully get into things, but initial impressions didn't blow us away. It’s also always a doubles game, and if you’re playing solo you control both players at once.
Your character moves automatically to the perfect location, you swing, the enemy players to the same, rinse and repeat. We don’t quite know why Badminton resonated with us so when Tennis didn’t, but we can’t deny that the whole thing was a little bit disappointing. We didn’t feel in control, and having both players react identically to our swings just felt wrong. It was the same in Wii Sports, of course, but that was nearly 16 years ago.
All in all our preview time with Nintendo Switch Sports was a mixed bag; great highs but disappointing lows. Some of these disappointments may well iron themselves out or melt away once we get our hands on the full thing, but to find out about that you’ll have to keep an eye open for our full review.

Wii Sports, and Switch sports, is a party game. A game to play with friends and family. Nothing more, nothing less. With cute visuals and nice music. But the depth of a puddle.
It’s got that majesco thq shovelware wii sports rip off art style. Why
Highs and lows is pretty much how I pre-judged it from the released footage 😶
One of the lows definitely are those new character designs. But at least we still can use Miis
Give me switch sports resort and then I'd be all in.
I was incredibly let down by Tennis in the beta, glad I'm not the only one who feels that way.
But yeah, the entire game's a mixed bag really. A sequel to one of the most beloved family games of a generation.... only to completely cull what made it so fun in the first place: the character. Very split on whether to get this one or not.
I've mainly only ordered it to play Tennis and Bowling (and probably Golf when it arrives in an update)
The rest are just an added bonus so not too worried
If they sell the sports individually I might pick up Badminton.
I know most people say that bowling is the best but Tennis was always my favorite and now I'm concerned about buying the game.
Played Tennis a few times on the online test and it was awesome, so responsive and fun to play, and the game looks very pretty too, glad they have improved the avatar's as the Mii's are just so dated now.
Wasn't a fan of Tennis in the play test and whilst bowling was ok, I found the movements you made in Wii Sports a lot more intuitive so not surprising unfortunately
not a strong start from the looks of it.. glad badminton was fun, but with how little depth volleyball seemed to have it makes me wonder why sports like baseball or boxing got cut. there are plenty of visually and mechanically diff sports they couldve brought back
i dont like the idea of nintendo stretching out "free dlc" over the years but it may be the only way for this game to pick up steam. spocco square seems like such a bustling map to only have 6/7 sports in
This will have to be pretty cheep for me to bother buying, might as well dust off the wii.
For me, Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort were mixed bags as well. I never liked the controls for boxing, and cycling just isn't fun. The rest of the games were either good, very good or great.
I am hoping this will have 100 pin bowling again, and that disc golf will be apart of the golf update.
You fool! I've been trained in your chambara arts by Count Dooku!
The omission of boxing and golf is unfortunate. I'm still undecided on this one...chambara could end up winning me over though.
I wasn't expecting anything else. Wii Sport and Resort were also pretty bad for core gamers. I maybe played them for 10 minutes because it was new back in the day, with the "wow" effect from motion control, but after that those games have no deep whatsoever.
by the sounds of it I'm glad I'm not getting Switch Sports I will just wait for Mario Strikers
Come to think of it, I’m now tempted to skip this altogether. It looks and plays like a cheap rip-off, and I already have Mario Tennis, 51 Worldwide, Mario Golf, and Skyward Sword for tennis, bowling, golf, and swordplay respectively (albeit the latter is single-player only), and finally, ARMS for boxing. Sure, these elements aren’t neatly consolidated in a single package, but it’s a pity that Nintendo have taken the simple concept of Wii Sports and somehow made it worse than the originals, and to release it so late into the console’s lifespan, especially when the individual activities have been done better elsewhere (all of which from among their own catalogue!).
I don’t care in the slightest for silly motion-based football (where the hell is baseball?!), while volleyball and badminton aren’t enough of a draw in and of themselves.
Frankly, a port of Wii Sports Club would have been a lot more appealing (with perhaps the Resorts activities thrown in for good measure). The fact that this will be considerably unfinished at launch is perhaps the most off-putting con of all. If I don’t grab this at launch, I’ll likely wait until after all of the sports have been added (and the cartridge updated to included all of the content on it).
Removed - unconstructive feedback; user is banned
Right. Guess I'll wait for a sale then.
@Broosh In case you missed it, golf is coming in a future update sometime this year.
I like the new characters.
@Shredderlovespizza Yeah... It's a bit strange that the Nintendo makes games that can be played only in TV/docked and tabletop modes. They need to make AT LEAST ONE game that can be played only in handheld/undocked mode. Or... They just need to stop making TV/docked mode-only exclusive games! This is not fair to Nintendo Switch Lite users and portable-only users of OG/regular Nintendo Switch!
Played the test, it seems like a pretty nice game. However, I 100% agree that tennis is disappointing. Having the 2 people controlled by you was especially annoying, and doubles only???
Despite this, still will be looking forward picking up at the end of the month!
@Bret !! I did miss that. Thanks for the heads up.
In my youth, my family was a sucker for all the Nintendo party games. My mom bought them all for us, and yes, we cut our hands playing Mario Party, we had the intense Wii Sports bowling moments, and of course we let our mom win at Mario Kart sometimes, so both she and DK could have dignity. And now here I am, years later, still buying all the party games. My kids are mostly too young for them, but in a few years, they will have such a treasure trove at their disposal. I’m getting Switch Sports. I liked the beta test, even if it was scheduled at the worst times to play. Like Wii Sports, I expected a mixed bag, but how many hours did Wii Sports cull from me in just tennis and bowling? I’m sure the sword fighting and badminton will do the same this time around, and also… sad to say, but bowling is arguably better in Nintendo’s world than the real world.
Wii Sports felt like the starting point for a gaming evolution that would one day lead to 1:1 motion controlled games where input was seamless and immersion was complete.
It never really happened. I'm sure this will be fun. But it does not to appear to deliver what a near two decade old title once promised.
Needs pickleball.
Does any country outside of the US know what pickleball is? Maybe Canada?
I really never understood the appeal behind Wii Sports (and by extension Switch Sports). They were always tech demo games, nice to pick up once or twice and never again. But everybody seemed to flock to these games. Nintendo during the late Wii/Wii U era went so hard to appeal to the casual market and they dipped on their core fanbase. We really didn't see the same quality of staple games until the Switch came out with the exception of a few gems.
Guys, what do you think between Switch Sports and Kinect Sports 1 & 2 on XBOX 360 since I have these games but doesn't have the machine yet ?
@mariomaster96 Twitter: bUt ThEy'Re NoT tRuE mIiS!
this is a little sad, i think ill wait awhile to pick it up
"Nintendo used copy and paste!"
Again.
Some sports were always more fun than others.
But it's exactly what I want- Wii Sports in HD with better character designs than those awful Miis.
I'm in it for the Bowling and Golf. But the Badmitton, Chambara and Soccer is a nice bonus. The Tennis and Volleyball will be some nice variety too.
If Nintendo ever make a Switch Family Edition, this game could easily become a pack-in game just for that.
Honestly what I expected. Wii Sports is a fun novelty and a game to play with friends. If it wasn’t included with the Wii, I doubt I would have ever bought it. I really have no interest in buying this but I mean, if you want a new Wii Sports to play on your Switch, here it is.
Unfortunate yet unsurprisingly news.
Let’s hope they add a sport or two after golf (baseball and boxing?), and soccer / volleyball / tennis receive an “advance” mode where you have more control and added speed on the overall experience.
Never thought Wii Sports was much beyond a simple party game to demo off the Wiimote. Didn’t think this game was going to be groundbreaking, it’s a party game after all… they’re not supposed to be deep experiences. Regardless of Nintendo Life’s review, or anyone else’s, this game is going to sell very well with the Ring Fit, Just Dance and 1-2 Switch crowd. Another thing, knowing Nintendo, they’re going to be patching it out and adding things after its release. I’m not worried.
I still play Wii Sports today with my friends, especially Golf and we're happy with that. Mario Strikers is coming out in June anyway (the day of my birthday) so at least there's that to look forward to. Regardless thanks for the Preview.
I played the demo.
Very poor gameplay. Wii Sports Resort and Kinect Sports 1&2 are MUCH better than this.
Kinect Volleyball and Kinect Soccer are far better than 2022 Switch Sports.
This is a max U$9,99 game. NEVER U$39,90. No way.
Nintendo needs to put more effort here...more FREE, FREE DLC sports. Not U$24,90 DLC.
Nintendo needs to put Disc Golf, Shooter, Freesbee, athletics (kinect best), and much more to value this game U$39,90.
In motion control terms, Just Dance is still JUST DANCE. The best party experience.
@Rykdrew Golf is going to be a free update.
Ironically I just read a hands on write up randomly on CNN. The reviewer there was absolutely gushing over this game. He was talking about how much he’s already addicted to the game , literally made this game sound like a Must Buy lol. I played the demo as well , mixed bag is exactly what that experience was. Cool to see Nintendo still promoting motion controls and the joy con features but this is giving off Wii Music vibes already. Easy pass for moi
@Bret Disc Golf!
@Rykdrew I'm responding to "Nintendo needs to put more effort here...more FREE, FREE DLC sports. Not U$24,90 DLC". They've already announced a free update. It'd be a very odd move to make us pay for more sports after giving us one for free.
Always looking for games to play with my family. Might check it out — hope they make a demo available at launch.
@Bret I hope so!
Wii Sports Resort = 14 sports
Kinect Sports 1&2 = 11 sports and dozens of great mini games
Switch Sports $39,90 = 7 sports (golf included)
Too poor for U$39,90
Anyone who thinks NL is full of fanboys for writers can check out Game Informer. Their preview was much more positive than this one. Not to say that's a problem, at all. NL isn't nearly as biased as you'd think.
when nintendo launched wii sports, and wii resort (sports) the devs clearly were excited by what they had to offer famlies - a new fun way to game (while pantomiming). by the time wii u sports club was released, nintendo had severely limited the offerings, while attempting to make the controls more responsive - if way more problematic (and, the company relegated the really charming stuff to titles like wii party u, and such).
gone are wahu island, pilotwings fly-over, bicycling tour, beach sword battle, wakeboarding, table tennis, basketball, frisbie dog, etc ... (hell ... i'd be happy if i could still fly platform to platform flapping my arms like a chicken to get fit), or attempt a pole vault/long jump!
@JaxonH why do you hate so the Mii?they are synomom with the Wii series.
Sounds like the sports are a mixed bag just like the original Wii Sports, but with less of the charm.
I'm in for Bowling and Badminton though! Hopefully Bowling is better here than in Clubhouse Games, as that was VERY easy to cheese and thus get perfect games repeatedly making it boring quickly.
Yeah I’m not getting this anymore. Definition of a game I will play for an hour then never pick up again.
Middle aged gamer shlub gets bored quickly of motion controls. What a shock.
Fortunately I have way too much to play right now to even care about this. Looks like a big ol' disappointment anyways
@Fizza What do you think? You gonna get it when it comes out?
@Marios-love-child I'm hoping for future DLC of boxing, archery, and 3-point basketball.
@Broosh Golf is being added really soon. I agree with you that Boxing should be at the top of the list to be added next. In the future, I would like to see Archery and then 3-Point Basketball. And, just thinking outside the box, for something new, how about Axe throwing?!
@Muddy_4_Ever I'm actually impressed with the motion controls in Mario Kart 8. I have my Wii still hooked up and went back and forth with it. The Mario Kart 8 motion controls are actually REALLY good. The Wii? In racing? Meh.
Motion controls have revolutionized shooters. Gyro Aiming with button controls is better than using two sticks. (Microsoft is the only one still using inadequate controls. Who cares if the next Call of Duty looks like a movie when controls like a 20 year old game.) I don't think motion control are going anywhere it's just that the different control options, touch screen, buttons, and motion will work together and not replace each other.
@Bret It looks like Nintendo's Expansion Pass will be the place for future DLC going forward. It's unclear if this will successful because it's very different from Sony and Microsoft's plan. Nintendo is the only one doing DLC as a service. Anything has to be better than micro-transactions.
@thinkhector Axe throwing would be brilliant! I'd also be onboard with archery, I definitely enjoyed it on Sports Champions (for PS Move...lol).
It looks really bad!
Try playing with actual people, i know this is impossible for millennials.
So it’s wii sports. Sounds about right.
@Rika_Yoshitake I don’t understand your comment. How is it impossible for 30 and 40 year olds to play with others?
Really? Tennis' controls are worse than Mario Tennis Aces? I thought the latter's Swing Mode was unplayable to begin with.
@Axecon It was simple fun. No hard button combos for performing attacks, just swing some game controllers like you'd do in real life sports.
While it certainly helped a lot for attracting casual gamers, it was a real blast just to boot up and play some bowling or tennis and stop sitting down in the couch.
@SMUGSLOTH69 if you liked tennis then, you'll like tennis now. it was fun for me in the play test, and tennis was my favorite on the original Wii Sports.
I panicked so much when I saw all these reviews of Switch Sports online, because I thought it has been already released. Reading this brought me peace of mind.
They NEED a DLC with all of the Sports Resort games (and I would say boxing but that just needs to come in an update [will they even add it now since there is Fitness Boxing??]). They could even have a little cutscene where the character discovers Wahu Island and a bunch of new sports and brings them back to Spocco Square to share with all the members.
Overall, it's still a buy from me and the DLC suggestion I mentioned would be a 100% buy. I'm just here for tennis and bowling, everything else is an add on.
All I needed to know was the Bowling part. As with the previous Bowling games, this will be just as fun for myself, my wife and our two kids to play together a few times a month for family fun night.
Wish Baseball comes back, hopefully in DLC later down the line and with some improvements.
@willatschool
Same for me, Tennis, Bowling (and hopefully eventually Baseball) are the cream and everything else is a bonus to occasionally play.
@Rykdrew Wii Sports Resort has 12 sports, not 14.
I'm mostly disappointed that Tennis hasn't changed much since Wii Sports. Why isn't singles an option? And why do they feel the need to launch it with only 6 sports types?
@Fizza I sort of was too but then saw game x plains video which showed that changiing you position in tennis actually adds a lot of depth..(they missed it at first too, but after a nintendo rep told them they found it out) so lets see if alx and us missed it too
I'll get it when it has more sports and when I see it on sale. I want it though, it must be very fun with friends.
@LinktotheFuture I too want 100 pin bowling. Actually, it's the only version of bowling that I want. Can anyone confirm if it is or is not included?
Sounds like still a buy to me. Volleyball seems to be the only disappointment. The bit about tennis makes it sounds like the only issue is that it's not much different from the previous game. I can understand the disappointment in that. But that's fine with me. I know what to expect. We loved tennis in Wii Sports.
@LinktotheFuture of the 12 sports, one was a dud, & you describe that as a mixed bag? Gosh dang masterpiece compared to this rehashed uninspired pile.
@NintendoArchive I was just using the same terminology as the article. I do consider Wii Sports Resort a masterpiece, for me the #1 game for the Wii.
I have had this game pre-ordered since the test trials they ran for the game a while back, and even after seeing these comments plus the information contained in the article, I am still stoked to get to play the game. I had the joy of playing a Wii for a short time but I never got to the point where I was worn out of motion controlled games. This will be just like picking right up where I left off. I was perfectly happy with the gameplay back in the day and playing the demo of Nintendo Switch Sports has reminded that I still love the gameplay. My girlfriend and kids will have fun with this one.
@LinktotheFuture just poking fun, no offense intended, tho for myself I actually liked cycling, the action made sense in my brain, but more importantly it was a vehicle for exploring wuhu on the ground level, which any chance to explore wuhu is a win.
but you & I both know airsports was the best!!!
@NintendoArchive No offense taken. I like bowling and disc golf the best, but my son agrees that airsports is the best!
I'm worried this is gonna be a huge flop once it releases like Mario Golf Super Rush.
I'm just really happy it's nothing like Mario Tennis, I just couldn't get into that at all. As long as the tennis plays like Wii Sports and Wii Sports Club I think that's how it should be, I'd be disappointed if they complicated things and made it like some other franchise.
@SmashFan347 there are always going to be some people (like me) who will buy just because it is 'wii sports on switch' but the tennis, chambara and bowling look pretty good. i still really want boxing and baseball though.
@Bret I really do think golf and maybe another sport are the only free things we'll get.
@Vyacheslav333 How would Switch Sports be played handheld? It would be the most boring thing ever if you just play tennis with a joystick and buttons, especially this series that's known for motion control.
@larryisaman
I was thinking the exact same thing. I know miis are optional, but they should be the default.
@willatschool Thx 😊 for telling me just got a bit worried
@SMUGSLOTH69 It's no problem, you're welcome
