One game here at Nintendo Life we're eager to learn more about is Sega's upcoming release, Sonic Frontiers.
Right now, we know it's coming out in 'Holiday 2022' and will be an "open-zone" experience. The story is also reportedly penned by Ian Flynn - head writer of IDW's current Sonic the Hedgehog comic.
Now, in the new season of the Sonic Official livestream, Sega of America's social media manager Katie Chrzanowski has been asked when more will be revealed - teasing news about the next mainline Sonic project would be arriving "soon", or at least at some point this year:
"See a lot of people asking about [Sonic] Frontiers, we don't have news on Frontiers today but don't worry soon. It's still set to come out this holiday, so we will have news for you this year, don't worry."
As also mentioned, it's still also on track for a holiday 2022 release, so there's no need to worry about any delays or anything like that. The game was also apparently meant to be a 2021 release, but Sega wanted to improve the quality of the product.
In the same livestream, it was also reiterated how there are no current plans for a physical version of Sonic Origins, but Sega has been made aware of the demand for one.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga proved to me that a cross-generation game ranging from the hardware capabilities of the PS5/XSX down to the Switch was not only possible, but impressive. If Sega is able to nail the same level of quality, then I'm certain Sonic Frontiers will have no problem coming to the Switch.
I wonder how long they’ll hold off on showing actual gameplay as in unscripted gameplay that demonstrates how the developers of Sonic Forces have taken to making a open 3D platformer that necessitates smooth controls and a good amount of freedom.
@ModdedInkling This is SEGA though, so that's an incredibly big "if."
After the terrible disappointment of many 3D Sonic games most notably Sonic Forces you'll forgive me but my enthusiasm for Frontiers remains quite low atm. I hope I get a pleasant surprise instead but I'm not holding my breath.
Also just curious but why does it say the Article was published at 05:35? it's actually 05:08 here in Ireland now. I know Nintendo Life is based in the U.K like Push Square and this is the second time I've seen this.
@ModdedInkling Fingers crossed.
I fully expect we'll hear more about the game around would-be E3 time in June. This is a game I frankly keep forgetting exists, but I'm cautiously optimistic for it. I'm not like the biggest Sonic fan in the world, but I really enjoyed playing through Colors for the first time last year on Switch, and I also quite liked Sonic Mania. I'm looking forward to Origins as well. And it goes without saying, but both the movies were a fun ride. SEGA has been on a roll (spin dash?) lately, so I hope they'll be able to deliver.
It's funny how being a Nintendo-only gamer during the Wii/Wii U days meant seeing all these ambitious, open-world games from other companies and having no equivalent on your platform, as Nintendo was focused almost solely on 2D platformers. Now, there's just a plethora of open world games on Switch. This year alone, we've had fantastic 3D adventures in Kirby and Pokémon, with an even more open Pokémon coming soon. I'm really enjoying it, though I still like the linear stuff sprinkled in there as well.
Lastly, being a Nintendo-only gamer, I never got to experience the console version of Sonic Generations, so I really hope SEGA ports that one next. I wouldn't expect it this year or anything, but hopefully someday down the line. I honestly enjoyed Lost World quite a bit, even though it was kinda vanilla. Sonic is always trying to re-invent the wheel to limited success, so I can appreciate it when they dial it back and just make a normal game. I never beat it, though, as the controls kind of frustrated me--I thought the homing attack could be unresponsive, and I didn't understand how to make Sonic run along the wall without losing all momentum and falling. If they improved that, though, I'd happily double-dip.
Remember Sonic Origins gameplay wasn’t shown until 2 months before release, I think they’re just waiting until Sonic Frontiers is closer to being finished so the gameplay looks like the final product.
‘This holiday’ is pretty vague- that could be summer or Xmas. This game has a lot of potential but the lack of gameplay footage isn’t a good sign
@Pandy-the-Panda
We knew what Sonic Origins gameplay would though since it was always implied to be based off the mobile remasters. Frontiers is similar to how they handled Sonic 4 in how they avoided showing gameplay, even that possible tease with that human lady is comparable to how they gave us artwork of the ugly badnik redesigns as news rather than showing us what Sonic 4 actually played like, the second footage leaked of 4 it was obvious why Sega was withholding it.
Summer game mess
I'm cautiously optimistic about this game, still want to see more though
I’m getting it on ps5, no way I’m risking it with the switch, day one for me tho.
Sega has a history of screwing over their big releases with deadlines and mandates from management. Keep an eye on how much they're talking about the game in the coming months because that's a good indication as to how confident they are in the product.
@SalvorHardin
I doubt that human design was a tease.
The Legend of Sonic; Breath of the Eggman
The last Sonic Frontiers trailer was at the Game Awards so a reasonable guess is the next trailer being in Geoff Keighley's next event. Last year there was Summer Game Fest Kickoff Live in June a few days before the Xbox showcase so perhaps the same happens this time.
@RubyCarbuncle Sonic Forces is awful. The level design is either simple and boring or badly designed. For instance, that little roof where you are supposed to dash but if you do you fall off. There are a lot of gameplay contradictions, not to mention that the useful mid-air dash was removed. What I did on that little roof was avoid the enemies and jump in a weird way. It's a poorly designed game and the graphics are worse than Sonic Generations (Xbox 360). I read that the team that developed it was not experienced. Whoever is working at Sonic Team right now I hope they do a better work than the last time. In spite of Sonic Forces, I have the feeling that Sonic Frontiers is not rushed and it's better designed and that it has the potential to become the best Sonic 3D game so let's hope and pray that I'm not wrong.
Actually interested in this. Could it be a sonic adventure 3 or is it more Zelda like with open world exploring and dungeons
Interested in seeing more but not getting my hopes up.
Would be interesting to see but knowing their recent track record my expectation are low. It could either blow our mind or disappoint us even more. Whatever it end up becoming hopefully it'll lead to something good someday.
I'm just going off Sega track record with 3D Sonic especially within the last 10 years I have no hope for Frontiers
@Banjo- I highly agree with you
I'm thinking we'll get a Sonic Central in June, where they'll show gameplay and talk about more details about Sonic Origins (they said they'd share more details later).
I’m really hoping for something great from Frontiers, but I am definitely keeping my expectations in check to avoid disappointment.
@Kayloo Thanks!
Hey @Banjo Do you have a 3ds or a switch if so here are my 3ds and switch codes. 3DS is 1719 3434 1690 and switch is Sw-4815-7863-7879 👍
I’m really hoping Origins sells well so Sega can justify putting out another delay on this game. No gameplay as of yet has not been filling me with excitement. I’ve been burned too many times to be excited anyway.
Sonic projects lately have gotten a lot more dedication and love. I still don't have the highest of hopes but I'm a little more optimistic after Sonic Mania and the Sonic movies
@Axecon Sonic Mania was made by a team of fans (Christian Whitehead, Headcannon etc.). Not made by Sonic Team that is working on Sonic Frontiers.
I don't expect much from another Sonic 3D game. But looking forward to Sonic Origins.
@Yosti True it wasn't the main Sonic devs that did Mania but they still oversaw production and quality. Also the time and effort put into Frontiers is much more than other 3D Sonic games. The Frontiers team is not being rushed on development so they can avoid glitches and put more polishing touches. Frontiers was originally set to release in 2021 (for Sonic's 30th anniversary) but was pushed back due to the scope of the game and limited pandemic work schedule. I also highly doubt we will see it in late 2022 and rather in 2023, less of this game has been shown off or marketed than BOTW 2.
Hopefully they show some gameplay this time.
@Mattock1987 , i think what they ment by "polishing" the gameplay is "weve just started the development". Probably why no gameplay footage yet.
@Banjo- "level design"? In sonic forces?! YOUR JOKES ARE SO FUNNY MAN!!
Jokes aside the levels can be finished in under a minute. Heck, under 30 seconds. The "levels" are short while being garbage.
Somehow managed to achive the worst level design in history of gaming.
Obviously I'm looking forward to this. I always buy every Sonic game, though of course the quality in 3d releases is highly variable. I'm very concerned that its still apparently coming by Christmas and yet we've still not seen any gameplay whatsoever. But as others have said, we've only just seen true Origins footage 2 months before release, so maybe I'm wrong.
All the official statements are saying things that sound good to me, and what little we've been shown is cool so far. I'm optimistic it will be a good game, though if I was a betting man, I'd say it may be delayed, simply due to how little we've seen. Its very important for momentum of the brand and all the positive steps forward recently that they don't mess up this specific game - far better to delay it to make sure its decent.
Watch it take them to make news until 2027!
Looking at Forgotten Land and Galaxy/3DW-L/Odyssey, it almost feels like 3D iterations of traditionally 2D games are something that is simple and organically developes.
Sonic has always been there to remind us "nope, it's actually really hard." Hope they've figured it out finally.
Day 1 buy for sure!
And definitely on PS5
@EveryGameBeLike Ha ha, exactly that. I guess the soundtrack is the only re-play-able part.
@Kayloo Yep, no problem, I'll add you 😊.
Ok Thanks! My name is ProGamer09
I guess I'll try to be optimistic the game will be decent. It's not like they just started developing it six months ago. We also know it's already been delayed once. So it's had some considerable amount of time. Not that it promises anything.
@ModdedInkling hopefully not with the ps4, xbox one and the switch.
I don't want a sonic 06, cyberpunk and Sonic colours ultimate situation where there was multiple bugs and has graphical issues.
@2Qwuik
Yeah. With a brand new game, it shouldn't be simply a water-downed port. The game should be developed with all hardware in mind.
“Breadth of the Rings”
In lieu of a Sonic Adventure 3, I’m here for it!
How long is soon?
Just realized how annoying that voice in the video is.
Calls Sonic "over here...!"
Then after calling him over there says "Don't! It's too dangerous!"
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
