I was hesitant to get excited over Yakuza 0 on Switch 2 because of how downgraded the Yakuza 1 port was - if I want to play through the series I’d rather do it on one console, and i would have had to move to PS5 for Kiwami 1 (by choice) and 2 (by necessity)
Now I can play them all on Switch 2 so they made it much easier for me to consider getting into the series’ earlier entries. I am excited!
Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth were my first (and only) experiences with the series but I absolutely LOVED them, and want to go back to see what I missed.
I’m actually shocked that it hasn’t been ported already. This is right up there with Windwaker and Twilight Princess HD in the category of “wow they really haven’t put this on Switch yet??”
Just make a port that runs natively in widescreen and at 1080/60 and call it a day, it does NOT need any more work than that. The game is what it is and people just want to experience it on a modern platform. A native port very well may even be considered definitive
What do you expect when you raise the cost of software across the board and your flagship title is $80? This is the generation where I will just rent everything. There are very few games where I will feel the need to play them day 1. They’ve ensured that I already spent pretty much every penny I am going to spend this generation just on the hardware, and I imagine others are in the same boat.
In all honesty I feel abandoned by Nintendo with this game. I waited over 25 years for another DK platformer, and this feels so far removed from what I had in mind that it may as well not even be called Donkey Kong. I’m sure it’s a very fun and well designed game in its own right but when I see this game, I can’t help but feel disappointed for the true DK64 sequel we never got and now we never will. If I could separate this game from that disappointment in my mind I would absolutely buy and play this. I would be so excited if this was coming off the back of a different DK platformer. Now I’m not even sure that I would rent it for free.
Not the user’s fault in any way shape or form if it’s Nintendo’s transfer process that didn’t work. But part of me wonders if they really used the proper transfer process. All my stuff made it over to switch 2.
I was pretty meticulous about moving my Pokemon up through the generations and everything eventually ended up in one of the DS games. I was gutted when I lost all my DS carts, and with it years of catching them all.
It’s possible those carts will turn up someday but will they still maintain a save, and will there still be a way to move them forward from the DS generation? Doubt it
I don’t plan on buying an express card for some time, (at least not until there is a Sandisk branded 512GB card available - the fact that there isn’t one yet should tell you something about the quality of the other brands cards) The bump in internal storage is nice but still overall less than what I had in total with my Switch + 256gb microSD, which in combination were at capacity. So I will be deleting and reinstalling games for some time to come.
What would be an incredible help is if a software update came that allows us to allocate older Switch titles to a standard microSD (similar to how a PS5 will allow you to run PS4 titles from a mechanical USB hard drive)
This way I could use the card I have, with 256gb allocated to Switch 1 titles, and all the on-board memory allocated to Switch 2. That would actually last me a VERY long time, perhaps indefinitely for the entire time I own the console.
I’m going to wait till it shows up at my door, set it up, play Mario kart for all of 10 minutes, go “heh, neat” and allow it to collect dust for the next 7 years
I honestly don’t care about any new software this company puts out at this point. Literally anything they release will just be a monkey paw wish. I can’t even be bothered to play the last 5 games they made, for free. They’re just not good anymore. This is coming from one of the biggest fans who was around from gen 1.
@VoidofLight I am not incredibly new to the series, I had the original US GameCube release pre-ordered. Regardless of my personal credentials, DS to 3DS was much less of an iterative jump between handheld generations, the increased processing power/memory of the console (and 3D screen) made for a sequel that was as fundamentally different as playing a game on the SNES would be compared to the PS1. It’s not strictly about “can new machine play old game” The Switch 2 hardware simply isn’t going to permit them to develop something fundamentally different enough for them to market another title in the series. The same is true for Smash. They still have to sell the game at the end of the day.
@VoidofLight I disagree, I do not foresee them putting out another animal crossing game (read: by and large the same experience on the “same” platform) during this generation. It is more of an evergreen title for the Switch/Switch 2 platform. They will do better to have minimal development costs, shift new units of the software to new players, and get another $20 out of existing players. If even 1% of existing players bought a $20 upgrade package, this would account for nearly $10m in revenue. They will push out a “space colony expansion” with 4K/30fps graphics upgrade for the entire game and call it a day.
I suspect that we will eventually see a paid Switch 2 update with some form of extensive additional content. As to when is a mattter of when that makes sense in terms of marketing and what else Nintendo has in the pipeline
Surprised nobody is mentioning the Jackbox Party Packs, considering those are by far what get the most playtime on my switch for the past couple of years
This was a fun game way back in the day (and link being in it definitely sold me) but I’m not entirely sure I ever really knew what I was doing, or how to play the game beyond just mashing buttons
I think the talent at this studio was woefully underutilized. They should have been contracted by a larger publisher (Nintendo) and given the resources to to make a AAA game in their style (Donkey Kong 3D platformer that isn’t Bananza)
It’s only a timed exclusive afaik. Here’s the problem - this game is a prequel. Without a switch 2 update for Yakuza Kiwami, I’m not going to want to jump into playing the prequel before playing the game in the series that preceded it in the manner that they wished to tell this story. So I’m going to end up playing that game on ps5 so as not to get terrible performance. Then by the time that happens, I’m not going to want the performance hit, or to play the prequel with a different controller, and the ps5 edition will already be out, making the decision to not play Yakuza Zero on switch 2 much easier.
Glad I held out and never played this, if I am going to play it now it will at least be the slightly less janky version. But I never played Sword/Shield either and there’s no hint at those getting Switch 2 improvements. As a gen 1 fan I think I’m finally just out on mainline Pokemon games.
This is such a letdown. The system that most struggles with framerates and thus needs VRR the most. The Switch 2 feels like it is a handheld-first system and docked play is an afterthought
I don’t think there is going to be a new Animal Crossing. At least, not this generation. Same with Smash. These titles will serve as a platform and rather than reinvent the wheel they will receive an extensive Switch 2 update with extra content, in the $20-$30 range.
I hope they bring the fossil chocolates over here too. I imported a case of them a couple years back and they did not last very long. I expected them to be fun to open and eat, but they were good too
I will absolutely still be playing Mario Kart 8. MKW may be fine in its own right, but it’s a shakeup. MK8 remains the pinnacle of the classic Mario Kart experience as far as I am concerned.
I know it’s very unlikely that Nintendo will do anything to market the older title in the series when they’re trying to push the new one, but I’d really like it if this got an update to run natively as a Switch 2 Version.
Maybe this could mean higher framerates/resolutions, or HDR support. But if it only ever remains playable in its current form then that’s not a bad state of affairs.
I would be hyped, but I am not counting my chickens before they hatch. I am already apprehensive about the 3+4 remake, which seems to have lost a lot of the charm and humor that made the originals so special. I can still remember talking with friends on the schoolbus and playground about random secrets we found in THPS 4. One of the first things I will be doing is checking a certain set of binoculars in the San Diego Zoo… how much do you want to bet it does nothing in the new game? Will we get to skate as Eddie or Boba Fett again? I have my doubts.
@StewdaMegaManNerd there are absolutely ways Nintendo could approach having a powerful home console that would not sacrifice the portable side of their business
@electrolite77 the last time Nintendo had a power competitive console was 20+ years ago. There are multiple new generations of Nintendo fans since then who, let’s face it, will buy whatever they put out. Microsoft’s struggles are not analogous to Nintendo. They operate completely differently and do not have the strength of Nintendo’s first party IP. There are absolutely ways Nintendo could pull off a powerful home console without sacrificing the portable side of their business. The Switch and Switch 2 approach are ultimately only one set of compromises.
I just want Nintendo to focus on making a powerful console again, next time around. It’s not like it won’t sell. I’m tired of having to buy/hook up multiple consoles and determine what console will be best to play whichever game on, and have to question if I’m making the right choice. Almost every third party game that comes out I end up buying on PS5. Life would be so much better if I had a reason to just buy them on a Nintendo console instead.
Do they really have a case? It’s not like Genki were subject to an NDA Hopefully they will make a Switch 2 version of the mini dock before they go under. Or confirm switch 2 compatibility with the current one. And then blow them out at bargain bin prices to help fund the legal battle.
I installed this, did the switch 2 transfer and am packing up my switch to ship off after having already sold it on eBay. At this point I can only hope the process actually works.
There is a small part of me that is like “ugh, really?” But honestly? I’m actually kinda glad. Let them cook, this game should have every chance to be the best it can be. I was also kinda concerned I’d be buying a Switch 2 at a time that I basically would not even be looking at the Switch 2. Now I’ll actually have some time to play it without my attention being diverted elsewhere.
No, because I did not buy any physical Switch cartridges for the entirety of that generation and I don’t plan to start now. But I will most likely rent many of these, which is one reason why theyre obviously so much better than a 1 time use code in a box. There were many Switch games I could not rent because of that. Otherwise, all the local public libraries near me let people take out their games for the low low price of $0.00, so key cards are a great development for me
@zidentia there’s nothing to agree or disagree about, this is the nature of data retention in this means of storage. @Pak-Man anything on the Wii shop is perfectly preserved at this point, despite the fact that they were not released on physical media. The legal ability to purchase copies is not preservation of software.
@Hwatt it’s definitely a great feature but another telling sign of Nintendo’s poor communication with the introduction of this generation. They couldn’t have told us this would be possible sooner? Now there will be a mad dash of everyone trying to sell their consoles at the same time. I’m sure GameStop has had to field many now-unnecessary questions about how trade ins would work as well.
Seeing DK64 continually get the short end of the stick hurts. It was my first Nintendo console game. I will never forget the rush of hooking up the jungle green N64 and seeing that rap for the first time. On MY video game system.
Before that I had a Pico, and I was pretty familiar with PlayStation from having played it at other people’s houses. I very easily could have become a Sega or Sony kid.
@Pak-Man aaaaand that’s where you lost me. What in the world does any of this have to do with “preservation”? Existing on a cart, in full or in part, does nothing for preservation. N o t h i n g. Preservation is about proper archival practices put in place by the developers and publishers. Not mass producing game releases and considering them “preserved” simply because they exist. Preserving your own purchase is better with downloads too: When every Switch cart is corrupted in another 15-20 years (all NAND flash by the way; not true mask ROMs like the cartridges of old) you will be happy to have a proper copy of the games you downloaded and purchased on your SD card, from which you were able to easily copy and PRESERVE your data.
I was also interested in selling my original Smash Bros pro controller until I found out that counterfeits have basically destroyed the market for that controller on eBay now. You can get them so cheap (and often only vaguely labeled as such, if at all) that nobody would bother paying a decent price for the real thing.

Preserving your own purchase is better with downloads too:
When every Switch cart is corrupted in another 15-20 years (all NAND flash by the way; not true mask ROMs like the cartridges of old) you will be happy to have a proper copy of the games you downloaded and purchased on your SD card, from which you were able to easily copy and PRESERVE your data.
