@Jujuman Interesting to know that that's how the term is specified legally, but don't appreciate the harshness in your tone. Whether you're a lawyer or not doesn't affect my opinion on the matter at hand.
@Jujuman No, I understand the law, I'm just saying that "irreparable damage" is a massive overstatement for a company the size of Nintendo.
And before people get on my back like the last time I made the mistake to comment on a piracy article, yes I think piracy is generally bad, but it's a matter of scale - pirating from smaller independent creators is bad, pirating from megabucks conglomerate companies like Nintendo is much less so in the grand scheme of things. Irreparable suggests that the bad work done here to Nintendo is impossible to repair, which it quite literally isn't.
Given how the system went from a must have to a sitting on the backburner for a much later date in one fell swoop when the prices for everything was announced, pretty poor personally! Add to that the mire of constant small gripes about seemingly every aspect of the system and its ecosystem, it's been a rollercoaster of FOMO on launch week to not really caring all too much, despite there being an obvious hole missing in me as a result.
The more I see of Mario Kart World the more it looks just okay, and with no info on games I care about (Kirby Air Riders) and no must have series yet announced (Xenoblade or Smash), it's been relatively easy to simply forget the system even came out really. Just really feeling the personal new game drought that's been going for a long while now, which is why I was so excited for a new generation.
@SirLink Maybe if the game was priced sensibly, perhaps there would be more people who could vote on the game properly and bump it up the rankings, hm?
The more I see and hear about this game, the more glad I am that I have sat out the launch window completely - whilst World looks like its taking a step back to the hectic chaos and technical driving of Wii I loved, the qualms with the open world and general track design, as well as various Nintendo-isms with various aspects of the game's design as a whole, has definitely solidified this as a game I can happily sit out on for a while.
I was never going to pay the £75 entry fee, but that doesn't reduce the issues on display - especially for such a tentpole series that has been in the works for some 7 plus years. Hopefully sales bring the price down to sensible levels (see: £50 or less), and hopefully those come relatively soon. The game seems great, but its not holding itself up very well for the ridiculous price they are asking.
I think I am good for now. Hope everyone else enjoys Switch 2 if they are getting one at launch, I will happily mooch off people secondhand til the games become affordable.
Despite how objectively good these games are, they fall rather flat to me - especially 8 Deluxe. The general gameplay feel with these games is much blander than the amazing trifecta of Double Dash/DS/Wii, and after the decade of MK8 specifically it will be amazing to finally move on to a new game that looks to have so actual spice and zest to its gameplay.
Sure, I'll be waiting like a year or two for the price of World to come down, but the point still stands. I'll happily armchair critic that time away!
@Suketoudara that's for a digital copy though. I would want the physical.
There's no chance I'm paying more than £20 or so for a single digital product. I don't own it outright, so I can't justify putting down a particularly high price for a digital game.
So waiting for physical copies of games to come down in price eventually is unfortunately the stubborn way I am going to have to go with this generation.
I was all over getting a new mario kart until the prices got revealed. Perhaps I'll become part of the best selling statistics for the game in a year or two when there's hopefully some places selling the game for a not stupidly high price.
Do the Xenoblade games really not count? Nintendo OWNS Monolithsoft, that makes them first party surely...
Same goes for Fire Emblem, and Smash, and numerous smaller games that are all first party - an Intelligent Systems game like WarioWare counts, yet Fire Emblem does not? What is being included is strange here.
@Anti-Matter This is an app, not a game. It isn't meant to be compared to actual games at all.
Then secondly it's not AI, that's the entire point of the app - humans giving the suggestions so the app's dataset isn't relying on AI to make suggestions.
@KidSparta YES, the invincibility window upon getting hit in 8 Deluxe is frankly absurd. A good Mario Kart balances the downtime from getting hit with the ability to get back up to speed again, which was never an issue in Double Dash/Wii/DS.
It also makes it very unsatisfying to see your item thrown with precision just not land because the opponent was still in i-frames for a full second after starting to move again. Needlessly playing around this stupid time window sucks.
Good item distribution mechanics. Item play is BORING; every single online race has one guy up front with a meta build, with almost everyone else getting nothing but shrooms/stars/bullet bills to try and catch up - but because they are ALL getting these same items, nobody truly gets a good opportunity to break from the pack. This also just leads to the non-catchup items generally being seen less, and when they are, its usually a ton of reds being thrown at first place, so its just not fun regardless of what place you are in during the race.
Hopefully they take this game as an opportunity to do some interesting new things with the formula, and make it a fresh slate in terms of tracks too - we have been racing on the same track for up to a decade now, there is no need to see a bunch of the return again.
It literally cannot be more then £400, they would be pricing themselves out of the casual audience that is their primary demographic over time. £350 I can see doing reasonably well, it hits the "yeah that's affordable" range for the aforementioned casual crowd - especially in the super expensive world we live in now.
If they price it right, the software sales will more than make up for any potential profits they could make through hardware.
It's brilliant to see his design resemble the older DK design and the 2D mario artwork more closely. Whilst I was fine with the normal design, there was always something that felt off to me about it, no idea why. Hopefully this new one is more likely to stay from now on.
Having watched it, I was none the wiser to how any of the stuff in said trailer were that spoilery. I'm sure they are to a degree, but as is often the case it seems to be people wanting to make sure new players get as pure an experience as possible, when in reality showing very out of context spoilers rarely spoils the new to be player at all.
I have slide adventure magkid, and the accessory is really damn cool. Same goes for the taito paddle accessory that gives you a dial sticking out of the GBA slot for finer control in games like space invaders extreme.
Seems like a bit of an overreaction for a harmless promo video, these have never been the most interesting things to view - see the various CG animated ones for brothership or mario wonder, for instance. They're harmless, they promote the game to casual fans, they're always very simply executed.
I get wanting a more satisfying payoff, but come on... it's just a short video, no need to be so worked up about it.
(Also it's puppetry not an animation but whatever)
About damn time! I think everyone had this exact idea (having it as part of NSO) years ago, think the long wait made everyone forget it was a possible thing that could happen. Just glad to FINALLY have an NSO benefit actually be beneficial personally; everything else is just a neat bonus I have never used.
Just wonder if Smash and Xenoblade soundtracks will be on there, there might be rights issues in those cases. Hopefully they turn up down the line.
It'll be announced early next year I feel; they would be kneecapping their holiday sales if they announce it this year now. It's not like the original switch reveal where the Wii U was basically dead and was not going to shift significant units over the 2016 holiday period.
I'm feeling February reveal, release in May or June.
Oh no, the game is the ever so slightly censored version, what a shame.
The only real loss would be the breast slider for those who want to have a more representative character to play as, but even with it's exclusion that's barely a negative
@JohnnyMind ideally it'd be 10 for life, but yeah, it's just a way to maximise sales early on. It's just difficult personally to attach all too much value to digital goods given that you're just getting the code and not an actual physical product - like its extremely rare for me to spend more than £15 on a digital game, since the value just is not there otherwise to me. Goes doubly so for a mobile game, where it's just a much less stable platform for games in general - as well as them generally not being particularly fun to control on a phone
@JohnnyMind I mean, it'll be 20 down the line. The half price early bird sale is great, but it's not permanent - Nintendo sees the value of the game at 20 and that's just too much for a mobile game imo.
20 bucks sounds kinda steep for this, given it's a mobile game, but it's good that such a completed version exists instead of being delisted forever. It's really a purchase for the fans who have pumped a ton of time and/or money into it, so it's likely they would be willing to pay almost any amount to keep the game going.
Not surprised by people taking pictures, I know I would be sneaking a good few if I ever went. I don't know about other people, but seeing pictures of stuff in the museum whilst not being able to go myself is not going to detract from the sensation of going in person myself - I want to see all this cool stuff! But going to Japan is not a likely thing to happen any time in the near foreseeable future, so who cares if some pictures leak out?
Its stuff like actually tampering with the kiosks and such that's an actually harmful thing to do, but pictures? Really? It's impossible to expect people to not take them when they have a (likely) once in a lifetime chance to go in person themselves.
Who cares, there will be one eventually. Desperately grasping for a direct is pointless; if you simply don't care about it then the time will pass a lot faster.
Nintendo makes merch of any kind, scalpers go scalping. It's the circle of life at this point.
It'd be nice to have the merch more readily available worldwide, since it's extremely evident that there are people who are more than willing to put down the cash for these things.
Keep this AI trash out of every creative field. It serves zero purpose and serves as a means to simply replace the hardworking talent of people who actually care about the process of creating. Truly heinous technology, sincerely hope it dies off as soon as possible.
Pico park 2 looks to be a great time, much like the first one. Aside from that and the plucky squire that got release date info before this direct, basically a bust for me. Lots of neat stuff all round, though. Roll on switch 2!
I get the clamour for minifigures, but the designs of the majority of the mario cast would not suit the proportions of a lego minifigure in a way that still keeps the charming design of said characters. I really do think the brick built forms are the best way to go, and it has allowed for all sorts of enemies to become figures in some way without massively compromising on their designs at all. They're also more interesting display pieces too, imo
I reckon Xenosaga remasters or remakes must be on the horizon at some point, given how much the series ties in with Xenoblade. Also the linked article is from later 2019, so there has been a lot of time for bamco to reconsider the prospects of such a project and maybe even begin on something, so here's hoping.
I have less hope for Xenogears from square though, they seem to rarely ever do anything with that IP aside from a couple mobile game cameos and a few bits of expensive merch. It'd be very cool to see regardless though. Maybe as an HD-2D remaster?
Awesome to see that the detective club remakes sold enough to warrant a new entry, but a bit underwhelming to see that this was what the creepy teaser was for. It all makes sense in hindsight, though.
Happy for those who like this genre/series regardless
@RygelXVIII I don't care if it was a contractual agreement, people SHOULD be credited for their work on a project regardless of what they actually did and whether they were outsourced.
Incredibly scummy practice - if a person worked on a project of any sort, they should be properly credited. End of discussion. The fact there are still crediting issues these days is frankly ridiculous.
@jsty3105 Nintendo is very obviously going after these pirating things to defend themselves first and foremost. Sure, indie games ARE inherently affected by pirating - I never claimed otherwise - but in the cases the article sets out, its Nintendo protecting themselves above anything else. That's their aim here, since its their games mainly being affected and them losing money as a result.
I invite people to think a bit more critically about what comments are saying, since there have been numerous people responding to me with the mindset of "uh, piracy is stealing, and all stealing is bad, would you steal from a store, Matl?" - completely ignoring that these are things I never claimed to have done nor encouraged outright. I merely understand why people would pirate software, and I am going to root against corporations in most scenarios. They are not the little guy at play more often than not.
I flat out agree that piracy is illegal and immoral, but as with almost everything in life these things exist on a gradient. It IS more of a problem for an indie game to be pirated since the makers of the game are losing out on a lot more proportionally in comparison to Nintendo, who as I have said, have such a ludicrous amount of money to their names that a few missing sales is not going to affect their bottom line all too much. If Nintendo were absolutely at their worst as a company, then sure, I can see how it would be a problem then! But right now? When they are the most well off they have ever been with no signs of slowing down? Completely different ballpark.
There is nuance to everything. I invite people to not take opinions at face value and encourage them to actually read into them before claiming things that were never outright stated in said opinion. But hey ho, internet is gonna internet, the art of nuance and critical thinking is lost to most people. Enjoy your day, whoever ends up reading through all this.
@WaffleRaptor01 I never said it was okay in any capacity, just that I can understand why people would pirate games. I literally said that it's scummy. It's obviously a morally questionable practice that is something I have never and likely will never do myself, but it's not something that I necessarily disagree with when megabillions companies are involved.
It's objectively worse for an indie dev when their game is pirated in comparison, since last I checked they don't have infinite wealth lying around at their disposal.
Not very surprised by this, but it's hard to really side with Nintendo when they essentially have infinite money and they perhaps lost a few million in sales from some pirated games. That's nothing to them. They will still exist as the enormous multi billion dollar company for years to come.
I don't blame people who want to pirate games. Is it scummy? Sure! Always gonna side with the average person pirating some software over some mega company any day, however. Goes for everything, not just games. Just don't pirate indie projects, the people behind them actually need every penny they can get.
@AdolBannings-Laylee That's true; at the time it would be a clear cut decision to describe NES games as retro because of the vast amount of change between then and the early 3D games that were current at this time. It mostly depends on the factors outside of a pure "is it X years old" when it comes to describing "retro", because the jump from NES to PS1 compared to, say, Wii U to today is literally on opposite ends of the spectrum - the jump varies so drastically despite being of around the same span of time, as has always been the case with technology as a whole - its diminishing returns, it is already reaching a point where new games are indistinguishable to the naked eye from games of the last generation of consoles.
@Banks Generally, 15 to 20 years. In my mind "retro" typically means something that was made with different design sensibilities and a substantially large gap in technical development - so consoles and games dating around the wii, xbox 360 and ps3 era are almost unanimously "retro". Whilst systems such as the 3ds and wii u are obsolete, I would not consider anything released around that time as "retro" because they still feel like modern systems and games. I don't think anyone in their right mind would call mario kart 8 or smash wii u retro, you know?
Was waiting on a release date for Mina, so a bit underwhelming that its still got a vague "coming soon" attached to it. A new presumably 3D Shovel Knight game is awesome... but not even a proper tease of it, so nothing to really be excited about with that. The rest of the announcements weren't really interesting to me either, sadly.
Man, they've really gone downhill over the years, huh?
I think my last purchase from GAME was the Baten Kaitos remasters as the physical was exclusive to GAME. Before then... probably some of the trinkets for a christmas present or two. Its been a long time since they provided actual substantial worth from anything they offer, and a full on closure of the brand seems to be on the horizon. Kinda sad, but hard to really care at this point. The store just sucks.

Re: Nintendo Files Two New Lawsuits In Continued Clamp Down On Switch Piracy
@WaffleRaptor01 I never said it was okay in any capacity, just that I can understand why people would pirate games. I literally said that it's scummy. It's obviously a morally questionable practice that is something I have never and likely will never do myself, but it's not something that I necessarily disagree with when megabillions companies are involved.
It's objectively worse for an indie dev when their game is pirated in comparison, since last I checked they don't have infinite wealth lying around at their disposal.
Re: Nintendo Files Two New Lawsuits In Continued Clamp Down On Switch Piracy
Not very surprised by this, but it's hard to really side with Nintendo when they essentially have infinite money and they perhaps lost a few million in sales from some pirated games. That's nothing to them. They will still exist as the enormous multi billion dollar company for years to come.
I don't blame people who want to pirate games. Is it scummy? Sure! Always gonna side with the average person pirating some software over some mega company any day, however. Goes for everything, not just games. Just don't pirate indie projects, the people behind them actually need every penny they can get.
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@Banks Generally, 15 to 20 years. In my mind "retro" typically means something that was made with different design sensibilities and a substantially large gap in technical development - so consoles and games dating around the wii, xbox 360 and ps3 era are almost unanimously "retro". Whilst systems such as the 3ds and wii u are obsolete, I would not consider anything released around that time as "retro" because they still feel like modern systems and games. I don't think anyone in their right mind would call mario kart 8 or smash wii u retro, you know?
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
Its a 10 year old game... that alone makes this a clear cut case - shovel knight isn't retro
Re: Hands On: 'The Plucky Squire' - Wit And Charm Enough To Make Nintendo Jealous
This can't release soon enough, can't wait!
Re: Round Up: Yacht Club Games Presents - Every Shovel Knight Switch Announcement And Much More
Was waiting on a release date for Mina, so a bit underwhelming that its still got a vague "coming soon" attached to it. A new presumably 3D Shovel Knight game is awesome... but not even a proper tease of it, so nothing to really be excited about with that. The rest of the announcements weren't really interesting to me either, sadly.
Re: Retailer 'GAME' Is Ending Its Reward Programme And Elite Membership
Man, they've really gone downhill over the years, huh?
I think my last purchase from GAME was the Baten Kaitos remasters as the physical was exclusive to GAME. Before then... probably some of the trinkets for a christmas present or two. Its been a long time since they provided actual substantial worth from anything they offer, and a full on closure of the brand seems to be on the horizon. Kinda sad, but hard to really care at this point. The store just sucks.

Something affordable
Re: Nintendo Announces Second US Store, Opening 2025
That's nice, but when can we have a single store in the UK?
