Re: You Can Now Get A Platinum And Gold Point Coin Pin Set From My Nintendo (US)

Matl

At least the coins are something more substantial for once, but it's still a far cry from a properly good reward. Wish there were CDs available, I'd get them in a heartbeat, and be actually something worth getting. Far cry from the tons of printables and pointless bits of paper they have done for 99% of the rewards thus far, which hold literally no proper value. Just give me stuff that I can't literally make myself with a Google search and a printer, and actually make it available in all regions cus there's no reason not to.

Re: Soapbox: I Miss My Friends, But I Don't Want To Kill Them

Matl

@Shard1 yeah, it tends to be those who are basically pc only gamers that control what gets played among a group, unless that group is like a dedicated Nintendo or PlayStation group for example. Its just what's easiest to get everyone a copy of mostly, and as such console specific stuff is out of the question. What also doesn't help is that I'm in my last year of uni right now too, and am not enjoying a bit of it and am EXTREMELY behind cus of procrastinating and general lack of care. So my gaming is basically playing smash with a bunch of semi-randos in the discord, who range from anger issue 15 year olds to 30 year olds who stream and have a job and a life, so it's not really easy to fit in with them either, at least not yet. We get on, but they're sorta the secondary/tertiary friend circle. Just at a weird place in life right now, just dunno what I want out of anything and just gotta plough through the last couple months of uni with a ton left to do.

Re: Soapbox: I Miss My Friends, But I Don't Want To Kill Them

Matl

Me and my friend group from school played a fair bit together at the start of lockdown through among us, since we had people who had never really played anything and people who played lots of stuff. But that slowly stopped as people slowly dropped off cus they lost interest or were busy with other things, and those who played a ton of pc stuff were very competitive and just sorta stubborn too, which probably drove some people away. Then the remaining four of us started a Minecraft world; me and one friend being basically completely new to the game and the other two having played since it came out, basically. This went on for a few months, but literally every time we played one of the more experienced guys had some issue with what me or the other inexperienced person were doing, be it what we build, how we build, how we don't know crafting recipes, don't know how certain elements interact. Slowly this just turned into berating, especially towards me, since I got more of a handle on the mechanics and such and built bridges and towers that were apparently "ugly" or "had no purpose". This basically boiled up over time, and I eventually just stopped playing cus I was drove out essentially because I was being creative and unique in the game... That's about creativity and freedom.

It just sucks to have some good friends who are into gaming, but not necessarily what you're into. I am the only one of us who plays Nintendo, most play primarily pc and the rest hardly play at all or own no pc or console. But whenever we did play, it was stuff that the experienced players were used to or whatever was easiest to get between us all, since nobody has consoles aside from a couple with a switch, and they aren't into the stuff I am. So it's basically been a weird limbo where I play with a discord community who I am sorta friends with, but have no real connection with yet. It's just a bit upsetting to be as into games as I am, but cus I was basically born a generation too late (DS and Wii kid here, woo) and love Nintendo stuff nobody I am friends with has any experience such things, which is a big dampener during the good old covid situation. Turns out online gaming with friends is only possible if you all have the same system or whatever, which nobody does.

Re: It Seems Game Builder Garage Will Only Be Available On The eShop In Europe

Matl

@Scapetti And what happens when the eshop inevitably goes down for good, like the Wii shop channel and such? It is no longer possible to redownload anything.

Really the only reliable way of making sure your games of any format stay around is if you yourself rip the games and make backups of them, and even then they have to be stored somewhere on a storage device that will also degrade with time. I personally don't have huge issues with the physical/digital "war" people seem to have (there's pros and cons to both), but I do prefer physical since it's something tangible that my money has been spent on. At some point I think I will look into creating my own backups for my physical collection simply because they will eventually stop working, but the money I have spent on them is worth it to me for the long shelf life they will have before that point.

To tie it back to the article though, having a whole region be excluded from a physical release (ESPECIALLY for a Nintendo first party title) seems a little dumb; it'd at least make sense if it was a Japan only release. Maybe it's just cus it's a much smaller (and less of a priority?) release that they see no need to release it everywhere, but it still sucks for those who enjoy the physical collection side of things. Sure they could import a copy, but what if they don't want to incur the extra costs of that, or they only collect pal region games? There are many reasons why people do/don't care about whether a physical release does/should happen, but it should really be freedom for the consumer, not a funnelling towards the almighty digital age.

Re: It Seems Game Builder Garage Will Only Be Available On The eShop In Europe

Matl

@russell-marlow I doubt cart tax really applies for a company whose games are also for their system. As some other have mentioned its a smaller title in the vein of Brain Training, which is likely why its not a priority to get it physical everywhere. But it just feels off to have it physical for 2 of the 3 primary regions and skip the 3rd, though again Brain Training missed out on an NTSC physical version.

Just glad that it IS a smaller game and not a more notable release of Nintendo's. Once they start to have their mid-range/mid popularity series as digital only or physical in certain regions, then that's grounds to worry.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Worth Buying A Nintendo Wii U In 2021?

Matl

Wii U vs Switch

Super Mario 3D World - Best on switch, faster, more content, extra small odyssey style mode

DK Tropical Freeze - Best on switch, faster load times and better resolution, funky mode (i guess?)

Hyrule Warriors - Best on switch, all dlc included (which was pretty pricey originally). Only con is that a physical switch copy is sorta expensive as they seemed to only do one run

Pikmin 3 - Kinda even? Better controls on wii u, but some more content on switch

Captain Toad - Switch is slightly better, has some extra stuff and all thats missing is a few 3D world levels. Controls may be better on wii u though, but its more a case like pikmin 3 where its more preference than anything

Mario Kart 8 - redundant on wii u now. Basically zero reason to return, since deluxe is just that almost exact same game, but more stuff added.

Pokken Tournament - See Hyrule Warriors

HD Zeldas - probably gonna be redundant within the year, they're practically guaranteed to come to switch for the anniversary

Yoshi's Woolly World - Actually best on wii u. Crafted World on switch is also good, i enjoyed it to almost the same degree, but its a game worth hunting down a wii u for.

Xenoblade Chronicles X - The only big game left that needs to come to switch. Probably unlikely to do so soon (due to monolith being unable to handle a port project for it, they have said so multiple times in the past), but i would not be surprised if it came to switch eventually. For now, worth getting a wii u for.

Nintendo Land - The Wii Sports for wii u, its a fun party game. Enough said, really.

Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush - Its fine. Nothing special or worth a wii u to specifically play it on. The similar DS games are probably more worth your time and money.

Star Fox Zero - Just no.

Breath of the Wild - Best on switch; runs better and loads faster. Otherwise, same experience.

New Super Mario Bros. U/Luigi U - Even? Wii U has some stuff over switch in this case (boost mode, not forcing all players to pick easy characters if there are 4 players, challenges). But aside from that, practically the same.

Splatoon, Mario Maker, Smash 4 - All kinda pointless given their expanded switch versions. Sure they all have their own things on wii u that make them different, but its most likely you go back to them for nostalgia/to see how they were before.

Thats all i remember might be worth having a wii u for, and most are just better on switch anyway. Virtual console and wii backwards compatibility is what the wii u is best at, but for exclusives its very poor nowadays. Plus its a nightmare to set up if you want to play anything, why are there so many 3 metre long wires of different sizes with power bricks halfway?

TLDR; wii u is worth it for a few games maaaaybe, virtual console and wii stuff through HMDi.Best use as of now is for modding or the aforementioned old system libraries it offers, but as someone who doesn't care for wither of those? Wii U has very little to offer.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Worth Buying A Nintendo Wii U In 2021?

Matl

Only reason to potentially get a Wii U is for Xenoblade Chronicles X. But that may come to Switch eventually too. Most Wii U ports on Switch are waaaay better on Switch, with better load times and resolutions/frame rates for the most part, with the best instances having huge amounts of extra content or the previous DLC included on cart for the same original retail price.

Though if you want an older library of games, then the Wii U virtual console is absolutely incredible for that. But in terms of exclusive stuff to the Wii U, then yeah its basically pointless if that's your only interest.

Re: Nintendo's Official UK Store Has An All-New Look

Matl

@RupeeClock The shipping is indeed free for £20+ orders, tested by adding the SNES controller to my cart. It also offers express shipping for £3.99, interestingly; I don't remember this being an option for the original UK store.

Re: Nintendo's Official UK Store Has An All-New Look

Matl

There's an actual section for my nintendo exclusive items like the NES and SNES controllers, and the rewards too? Thank god, it was always a pain having to go to one site to select a reward, go to another to purchase, then pay a stupid amount of shipping too. Might actually get the my nintendo rewards now!

Re: Soapbox: Hurry Up And Release The Switch Pro Already, My Switch Is Dying

Matl

My switch is from the launch period, and it has shown its age frequently over the years. There is a crack in the shell from a few years ago out of nowhere, it sounds like it struggles to process any game, and of course the kickstand has been lost to time within the first few months. A new switch model is needed, and hopefully it actually addresses these sorts of issues, as well as being able to competently run games on it. Like Xenoblade 2 hardly reaches 720p 30fps docked? What? It really hurts to look at the older demanding titles and see them struggle to reach the bare minimum of acceptable.

And of course, COLOUR OPTIONS. The black the switch comes in by default is so boring, sure the joy con are meant for personalising it but I don't ever use handheld often enough to notice. So its a black box under the TV. Hopefully any special editions or basic variants they do actually have different looks that aren't just decals on the parts you aren't gonna be looking at 90% of the time.

Luckily I don't seem to have had drift on any controllers, but I wouldn't doubt it'll happen one day.

Re: Talking Point: Are You A 'Complete-In-Box' Or 'Loose Cart' Retro Gamer?

Matl

I've always been a guy who wants the full box and manual for their games, but because of this I haven't ventured and further than the GBA. I only have a single loose cart (being Minish Cap) purely because I was eager to play it. Aside from that, everything is in its box and with manual, which has meant I haven't gone into GBA collecting much. I want to actually have a place to store these items, and having lots of loose carts would sorta ruin the aesthetic for me I think. And besides, there's always emulation if I ever want to play games this age or older, given that its games of this age or older that are easily emulated.

Re: Soapbox: How One Large Vegetable Highlights The Issue With Japan-Only Merch

Matl

Its definitely a pain to get merch if you're a fan of a more niche series. I've only imported something once from playasia, and it wasn't the simplest or most enjoyable experience, but it was the only way to get a few amiibo missing from my collection. I've bought some stuff recently from the importer otaku.co.uk, which has allowed me to get some of the Japan exclusive soundtracks for the Xenoblade games. But outside of this, if you want merch from a niche series you gotta shell out hard for the imports, or hope you find what you want on ebay or the like for a decent price.

Re: Talking Point: The Problem With The X Button

Matl

All this is cus of the PlayStation in the west utilising cross as accept. Has resulted in nothing but confusion for people who use multiple consoles/controllers. It'd make sense if the cross was a different shape with no visual relation to X, but as it stands it completely confused the gaming world.

And Xbox using the same four letters for their controllers is at least more understandable, but the swapped positioning is almost as confusing since A is accept on both Nintendo and XBox, but the muscle memory of one system does not translate to the other; XBox has the same inputs as PlayStation in the end.

Re: Soapbox: When Is The Next 'Big' Nintendo Direct? Oh, Does It Really Matter Anymore?

Matl

As much as I love proper directs, I haven't really been expecting one for ages now. The smaller partner showcases are fine, but they have often lacked anything that big that makes them memorable and the often small number of announcements in them doesn't help either.

Nintendo absolutely has enough games in development right now to easily fill out a proper direct, but they obviously don't want to announce anything in such a way until they have established a firm release date (hence the Origami King and Age of Calamity random announcements/small build up to release).

Overall, I really doubt there will be any proper directs for a good while. Given the fact that Nintendo keeps doing random announcements of projects with little to no fanfare, kinda signals their unwillingness to put together an avalanche of announcements. Also given that various third parties announce stuff on their own time more recently (Monster Hunter Rise presentation a few days ago, for instance) further signals this to me, as they want to talk about their projects but Nintendo hasn't provided any outlets for them through direct plans.

I do miss the excitement directs provide, but I honestly don't really care any more if directs are "dead" or not, since the incredibly lacklustre smaller directs have been either disappointing or unmemorable. there is a vague hope for a direct early this year, but I am by no means holding out for one.

Re: Talking Point: Are You A Player Or Collector?

Matl

Definitely more of a collector right now, just haven't had the time/will to play much due to university and such. I do have a spreadsheet of everything I own and what has been player, and a good third of the around 300 games I own has either been played minimally or not at all. Doesn't help that I was buying quite a few game over the last year due to lockdown boredom, yet still haven't touched as many as I would have liked.

Re: Poll: Vote For Your Favourite Nintendo DS Games

Matl

I played New Super Mario Bros. so much when I was a kid, I used to be able to tell what level was being played just by the music and sounds alone. That game and Mario Kart DS were my first proper introduction to gaming, and such amazing games to start with too!
