"Revealed during The Game Awards, which we shouldn't hold against it"
...Am I the only one who thinks the Game Awards are kinda awesome and that maybe we should be nicer to it? You know y'all are going to miss it when it goes the way of E3, might as well enjoy it while it lasts...
@The_Nintendo_Expat Personally, I think the Switch 1 era showcased Nintendo's highest overall quality in a single generation of games... well, possibly ever. And I've been playing since the NES. So maybe it's just by comparison with the overwhelming and seemingly endless magic the Switch gave us so early on that these offerings feel particularly weak.
@Otoemetry For me, the crushing lonely atmosphere of Metroid Prime IS the franchise. They lost my interest and my purchase (at full price, at least) the second they chose to compromise that for chatty NPCs and huge, completely empty environments.
And anyone who says the desert and MacKenzie don't ruin the atmosphere because "they're only in part of the game" might as well argue that a drop of cyanide won't ruin a bottle of wine.
I'm glad people are getting "something" out of the game, but it's definitely not the something I'd want from Metroid Prime, and that alone is disappointing enough to tarnish the whole experience.
@Otoemetry I mean, I watched a lot of footage of people playing as well. Like I said, it looks decent, it looks like a Metroid game... but to me it definitely doesn't look like a $70 experience.
I dunno about anyone else, but I cancelled my MP4 preorder after the reviews. It seems nice but inessential, especially with SO many other releases to play.
@AussieMcBucket Yup, that's because a 10/10 game is allowed to have imperfections. In other words, a game can be imperfect but still be absolutely unmissable and a testament to its genre. BotW and its uneven frame rate come to mind.
@JohnnyMind I know "on paper" isn't everything, but on paper, Switch 2 is around 10 times as powerful as Switch 1. What's the argument that it shouldn't be able to run ANY Switch game at 2 times the frame rate?
Baffling. Did they think this would drive sales? I could understand if it was 60fps and had at least non-mod feature parity with other console versions, but this is just... sad. Extra sad since I think the original Switch port was actually quite the accomplishment and novel for its time.
@cedarhyped L take. Games should run better, for free, on more modern hardware. If you upgrade your PC, all your games run better, for free. If you bought a PS5, the vast majority of PS4 games run better (or at least in PS4 Pro mode), for free. Acting like it's such an outrageous request for it to be the same on Nintendo is... outrageous.
@TheExile285 Given a choice between 720p -> 1080p and 30fps -> 60fps, I'd take the frame rate every time. That said, we should be getting both, for free, for a game this old.
I am interested in this game... A port of this scale can't be an easy thing to manage, even for the most ambitious team. I'm happy they're at least addressing the issues!
Personally, the Switch 2 will be worth it as soon as Nintendo gets those devkits out and publishers are able to patch all their Switch 1 games to run at 1080p/60fps handheld. In the meantime, I find I'm still playing those Switch 1 games. The Switch 2 offerings are fun, but not exactly unmissable.
@ozwally US Thanksgiving is always the 4th Thursday in November. Canada has a holiday by the same name and function that is always on the 2nd Monday of October.
@Dom_31 Yeah it's not a bad game. I wish the environment had more variety, but the concept for the game's main mechanics was actually pretty fire, and the execution was competent.
@8bit-Man At least physical Switch 2 games don't have to install to internal storage like the PS5. PS5 sounds like it has way more storage at 800-something usable GB, but that got eaten up incredibly fast by physical games.
@Trmn8r Yeah but a lot of the reviews if you actually read them give off the vibe that they played 2 City Trial matches, bounced off of it and weren't willing to actually learn how to play, and said "How do we score this? I dunno, give it a 7." (Or a 4, in Metro's case).
@Wakkawipeout Interesting to hear considering I've had auto-accelerate turned on in Mario Kart ever since it became an option. You pretty much never want to NOT be at max speed in that game, and if you need to slow down you can still brake. Just seemed to free up my thumb for other stuff with no losses.
Rune Factory 4 Special for me. Just had a hankering. And as much as I loved Guardians of Azuma, it just felt really simplified mechanically to hold my attention for super long after the final credits.
@kal_el_07241 That's incorrect, and I can tell you from experience. The "virtual game card" thing just lets you know what games you have downloaded, and obviously you can't play games you haven't downloaded.
@Pipulitoch Full digital has benefits that Key Cards don't, though. Being able to launch multiple game without swapping carts, for example. Someone can be intelligent and pro-digital but very against Key Cards at the same time.
@canaryfarmer It's actually BECAUSE it's made for Switch 2 that the resolution is lower. Made-for-Switch-1 games run at much higher resolutions on Switch 2.
It's a simple fact that not every console launch year can be like Switch 1's. That was an extreme situation where Nintendo was coming off a colossal commercial failure and had already, for years, been peeling resources away from the Wii U to focus on Switch development. Switch 2's launch was never gonna be as strong. Personally I feel like what it offers still cements it firmly in the better half of Nintendo hardware launches. It already has more (first party developed or published) exclusives in its first 6 months than the PS5 currently does, and that's an almost 5 year old console.
Deffo getting Hyrule Warriors. Musou is just right up my alley. I love having a "turn brain off" button masher for when I want to watch YouTube, but not REALLY watch YouTube.
Frankly, I didn't expect this to get glowing reviews. Musou games are defined by their repetitive nature, which doesn't usually appeal to most critics. I have a brain that loves certain repetitive tasks though, so I tend to ignore that criticism in reviews. The game sounds like a blast!
Personally, MH Wilds is my least favorite MonHun ever, and not even particularly for performance issues. It just seems so messily designed, with no thought put toward the SIMPLE, seamless loop that made the original formula work. So many extraneous menus to get simple things done, monsters are animated well but hunts feel unsatisfying. I dunno, it might be enough to put me off the series until things go back to the way they were. I much preferred Rise.
@hYdeks The slow beginning is definitely a bummer. Like you said though, it ramps up, and there's quite a bit of variety in the wild and battle zones. I'm having fun.
@mjhopkins81 You have to really like Pokemon I think. Like, the monster characters themselves. Cause they're what my brain likes, basically no matter the quality of the game that surrounds them lol
@Elektrogeist1287 @Filthy Jesus, the game isn't that bad.
Yeah the balconies are flat textures and the NPCs don't move. Do you realize how freaking tiny those nitpicks are in the grand scheme? Don't you hear how ridiculous it is to say that people shouldn't buy the game because of them? Just let people enjoy what they like and try to find something to like for yourself.
@iNintendo We do that by not buying things that we think are too expensive. Thinking you can make that decision for others, and then being angry when you realize you can't, is just silly.
Leaving my prediction that the mass reaction to this will be "omg Nintendo so greedy boycott everything!!!!11!" instead of the much more reasonable "hey, those look cool! Too pricey for me, but I hope they bring joy to those who do buy them!"
@Member_the_game Galaxy is fantastic, but Galaxy 2 has moments that rank among the most beautiful in all of gaming for me. The back half of Slimy Spring and the entirety of Cosmic Cove in particular still make me shake my head in astonishment, as old and jaded as I am.
The internet seems predisposed to hate this one no matter what. Personally, I think it's fine. The Switch 2 version is the best looking Pokemon game ever (maybe damning with faint praise, but) and the new battle system is a welcome change. Could it have been a touch more ambitious, especially for the price? Sure, but the dogpiling has been absolutely insane.
@Grogro Switch 1's first year was definitely the exception, not the rule. It was only made possible because it became clear very early on that the Wii U was not going to succeed. Nintendo (and co) pulled resources from Wii U dev to begin developing Switch games only a few years into Wii U's lifetime, meaning that by the time Switch came out, they had those bangers lined up and ready to go.
Is it theoretically possible they could have beefed up production in order to have the same kind of slate ready for Switch 2? Maybe, but if it was so easy I'm sure they would have done it.
Look what Switch 2 is getting in its first 6 months: Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Pokemon Legends Z-A, Kirby Air Riders, Metroid Prime 4, and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is not the train wreck of a slate some people are claiming it is. That's still firmly among the best Nintendo launch windows in history. In my opinion.
If Nintendo is being arrogant for not having a generation-defining game out in the first four months of the Switch 2's life, I'd love to hear your thoughts on Sony, which has already got the PS6 in pre-production despite the PS5's most "generation-defining" game five years in being the second release of the remaster of the The Last of Us 2
@LazyDaisy I disagree. Independent reading, which requires intentional practice and self-motivation, is much more important to the measure of literacy than either speaking or listening, which is instinctive and natural in humans. For now, I can say thank goodness Pokemon is still requiring kids to be able to read on a basic level to engage with the content.
