Re: Nintendo 3DS Games Sure Look Pretty In High Definition

Kroko

@Luna-Harmony
That's not an adapter. That's literally a second console that you attach to your home console. The Wii U was never designed to run 3DS games, neither was the GC capable of running GBA games.

Also, this would not render the games in a definition higher than 400x240 anyway.

But I wish the next home console could be designed from the start to run handheld games as well.

Re: Nintendo 3DS Games Sure Look Pretty In High Definition

Kroko

Another proof that people need to stop whining about graphics. Even 3DS games look good, it's just that in 2011, nobody would have been ready to invest in a handheld capable of doing this. A lot of people were already complaining about both the price and the battery life back then, remember?

Good luck marketing a 400ยค handheld with a 80 min battery life.
(cough) Game Gear (cough cough)

With all the backlash and the "graphicwhorism", I'm afraid next gen will drop 3D in favor of resolution. Then, we will have lost one of the main innovations (if not the only innovation) of the generation, once again. While, 3D movies and 3D gaming on other platforms is failing hard, Nintendo actually did it right IMO. It would be a shame to move back.

Personally, I'd be more than happy to move from 400x240 to 800x480. The 3DS doesn't have a resolution as low as people make it sound to be. 480 lines would give a normal size 3DS a DPI similar to what modern smartphones have. Sure, that would still be low for a XL variant.

Re: Nintendo's 'Supplemental Computing Device' Patent is Cleared for Completion

Kroko

What bothers me is: why create the SCD and a new console at the same time? How does that make sense?

I feel this could actually be designed for the Wii U (the "console" in the patent just being the existing model) and give it a second chance. But that doesn't seem like a good idea to me, and it also feels unlikely they could pull off anything interesting with a console that wasn't designed in the first place to work with an SCD anyway.

I'm saying this because I don't see the point in having basically the console just cut in two halves. Two halves you will need anyway, apparently. The cloud-computing part makes sense, but the SCD doesn't. It is over-complicating something that has to be simple.

(or the so called SCD is a docking station for the next handheld to be played at home. I don't know, I should stop posting at 3 in the morning.)

Re: Poll: The Wii U GamePad - Where Do You Stand on Nintendo's Hefty Controller?

Kroko

I'm glad to see so many votes for ZombiU, as it is a 3rd party launch title and they made the effort to offer an excellent multi player asymmetrical mode.

I'm also glad to see so many votes for Nintendo Land, it often is underestimated.

It's surprising to see little votes for Pikmin3 however. The game made good use of the GP and still allowed you to play with a Wiimote.

Re: Poll: The Wii U GamePad - Where Do You Stand on Nintendo's Hefty Controller?

Kroko

When it comes to controller tech and new features, the Gamepad is the only noticeable step forward we took in nearly 20 years, except maybe for the switch to wireless. So yeah, it's definitely a great controller.

It could have used a slightly smaller screen, which would have reduced the size, weight, and increased the pixel density and maybe the battery life. But overall, the design isn't bad. The Gamepad being too heavy is kind of a joke. It isn't much heavier than these gigantic phablets so many people are carrying everywhere around. The screen isn't that bad either, although the colors and contrast can be way different from what you see on your TV, which will make it really obvious. But each TV being different, this is an issue specific to the Wii U.

And if you are struggling with the battery life, try turning off rumble and set backlight one notch lower. It can easily give you one more hour.

The real let down is the range. But here again, people are dumb and superficial, many would not have accepted the Wii U having an external antenna, and Nintendo knew that. This could have offered the larger bandwidth needed for AV streaming. Hopefully, the NX will have something new to offer in this department?

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Is Planning A Series Of Wii U Remasters For NX

Kroko

@TheRealThanos "No, x86 and/or ARM is fully expected by anyone with half a brain or more."

No need to be this aggressive just because someone had an opinion different from yours.

PPC isn't dead, it seems IBM is still releasing new versions. As for it being "alien", this is quiet new. Current gen is the first time everyone is trying to have the same architecture (AMD64 in this case). Before that, every console had its own architecture and it was just fine. Look how many games could be shared by consoles like PS2, GC and XB. Plus the fact 3rd parties love to use (and abuse) high-level software that dumb down the development to the extreme, and make it possible to produce games for pretty much any platform.

I personally conceder POWER, x86 and ARM to all be viable options. Also the few desktop machine that tried to bring a home console experience to the ARM family (like the Shield console) aren't that impressive when it comes to performance. And as we all know, graphics are the only things that matter in gaming (duh...).

The PPC proved to be a good choice in the past and many devs have a lot of experience with it. x86 is fine, but I am afraid of what would happen if the market suddenly consisted solely of 3 nearly identical consoles. It would not make much sense.

Re: Feature: How One Man Saved Kyoto - And Video Games - From The Atomic Bomb

Kroko

The Japanese had long offered surrender, at the condition that the Emperor and the country's administrative structure would be protected. I wonder how Americans would have reacted if they had been losing and would have been forced into Shintoism and to swear obedience to the Chrysanthemum Throne. Many would have probably preferred to keep up the fight.

In summary, what should be celebrated here is the hypotheses that this man might have made one of the most horrific war crime in the history of Mankind a little bit less... Nintendo-related?

What a hero...

Re: Rumour: More Claims Made For New Legend of Zelda on Wii U and NX, Gender Choice For Playable Character

Kroko

It's funny this VA rumor surfaced just when we were discussing XCX and its audio.
Give me KI: Uprising, and I'll suddenly ask for VA in every single game.
Give me XCX, and then, not so sure anymore...
Yeah, I can't make up my mind.

Maybe we could go for something similar to Fi's or Midna's speech? Without the added effects (reverb'...), obviously.

The multi-platform release however, it's great. It's probably the best thing to do. It's just sad the Wii U will be one of the very few console not to have its exclusive Zeldo.

Re: Music: Let This Musical Tribute To Xenoblade Chronicles X Gently Massage Your Eardrums

Kroko

"Hello?
Is this thing on?
I am on my own,
I need a bigger gun!"

Irk... The audio is one of the reasons I stopped playing this game. They are not singing, they are shouting. Shouting dull and ridiculous lyrics, with that. Tracks seem to loop way too fast and the music is also so loud that I can't understand half of the dialogues. Ironically, it is also one of the few games I ever played with no sound at all, because they didn't bother adding audio output for headphones on the GamePad. Beginner's mistake...

With all the bragging we made around this game being the ultimate gem of the Wii U's library, I am surprised and a bit disappointed there are still no updates or DLC. Nothing at all. Well, it seems the game didn't sell that well after all.

TRASH TALK!

Re: Rumour: Nintendo NX Source and Details Gain Some Traction

Kroko

@BigBarakuda I'm not too worried about this. The most important part of the work on the NX has been done under Iwata's leadership. There has been so little communication from Kimishima that it is difficult to tell in what direction he is taking the company now, but I still have hope for an interesting next gen. They seem to have something huge in preparation.

Re: GoldenEye 007 Director Martin Hollis Found A Weakness In The N64 That Almost Caused Another Delay

Kroko

A good opportunity, while we are here waiting for more NX news, to remind everyone that the creation of a new piece of hardware is an extremely complex and tedious task.

It's not that much about the "number of GHz" or the size of the RAM. In fact, I believe that the NX, whatever it turns out to be, is unlikely to have more RAM than the 4/One. I can already hear the complaints and whining from here...

Re: Rumour: Nintendo NX Source and Details Gain Some Traction

Kroko

@melin108 If voice chat is that important to you, why don't you use a 3rd party tool? Like Skype, TS, Mumble...

There are many free options, you can throw in other functionalities like video chat, file transfer, etc...

And obviously, it's multi platform. You'll be with your friends no matter what you're playing on (PC, consoles, microwave...).

Re: Rumour: Nintendo NX Source and Details Gain Some Traction

Kroko

@BigBarakuda 2 & 4) Nintendo doesn't have that much control over these things, sadly. 3rd parties are surprisingly unpredictable at times, to not say unreliable.
1 & 3) I wish the NX would blow my mind with something that I hadn't even imagined could happen. Sadly, I seem to be part of a minority. Wherever I look, more and more people are just asking for the next Nintendo console to be a more powerful PS4, with uninspired Wavebird-like controllers and the next Call of Duty. It doesn't make sense to me, but it seems to be the current fad.

I want more 3rd part support, but I don't want 3 clone consoles on the market, that would be a disaster.

Re: Star Fox Zero's Stage Names Are Another Delicious Throwback

Kroko

The level of this comment section is astonishing, once again...

1) it was never said this is the entire list of stages. The series is known for its branching paths. And why would the official site spoil the entire game anyway?

2) some places having the same name does NOT make them the same levels. Of course they have the same name, it's the same solar system, in the same fictional universe!

Re: Rumour: New Nintendo NX Controller Images Surface and Set the Web Alight

Kroko

Kids, please stop whining about the face buttons until you've actually tried the device yourself.

The DS, the handheld that started the trend of touch-based controls, has more buttons than any other Nintendo handheld, with the exception of the New 3DS. If this is real, then there is a reason for this to have been designed this way.

Re: Rumour Buster: Let's Have A Good Look At That "Leaked" NX Controller

Kroko

@abe_hikura
Totally possible. But that would be a lot of money, hardware resources and power consumption just for a basic interface.

But this would make it a successor to the WiiU GP and really wish they would keep trying. There's still a lot of potential in the second screen, especially for asymmetrical gameplay. I hope to see something similar next-gen.

Re: Rumour Buster: Let's Have A Good Look At That "Leaked" NX Controller

Kroko

People talk a lot about the free-form display, but I doubt this will be used this way. This would required all the games to be design early on with the oval screen and holes in mind, while all other platforms will still have rectangular screens. Not a good idea. But while I was thinking about this new leak, something came to my mind.

What if this was actually a SMARTPHONE prototype?

A gaming-focused SP, to be more accurate. A Nintendo SP has been rumored for a while, and it has been said that the next device would not replace the 3DS nor the Wii U (which would make sense if it's a phone).

This could be similar to the Xperia Play. While devices that tried to make a bridge between phones and consoles never made it too far, I still believe that if done right, there is a market for this kind of things.

Re: Unreal Engine 4 Programmer Returns With Fresh Batch of HD Ocarina of Time Scenes

Kroko

People need to stop getting so excited about UE4. I can't believe even engines get their share of fanboyism now.

If you really wish OoT on UE, it's probably because you do not know UE. It's nothing special out of itself, many other engines can do the same. It is also a performance killer. Leave this one to the PC world.

Nintendo has shown many times before they can come up with better solution themselves.

Re: Rumour Buster: Let's Clarify Some Issues With Those Recent Nintendo NX Predictions

Kroko

First part makes it sound like the author is convince video streaming was invented by Nintendo. Maybe it's just poorly worded.

Second, feedback in the joystick seems interesting, but would probably be pricey and really difficult to implement.

"It can literally Bluetooth synch with everything" sounds really suspicious. I would appreciate the next system to have more multimedia features though.

Next part, this person seems to believe Android and UE are two similar things? Meh...

The last two parts don't say much really.

There isn't much to keep from this whole thing if you ask me.

Re: Rumour: Online Survey Mentions NX's 4K Video Streaming, 900p Gameplay And Hybrid Hardware

Kroko

Is it really necessary to point out how suspicious this list is?

  • exclusive game franchises...
(what does this have to do with the hardware?)
  • connect with other...
    (old news, not relevant)
  • GP flows between home and handheld
(contradicted by the hardware list below that doesn't mention anything about 2 consoles or anything similar / this is just using the already existing rumors about an hybrid machine for hype)
  • earn and share achievements...
    (old news)
  • surf the web + video calls
(old news, irrelevant, even if these features do exist, they are not important enough to be shown this early / before the core features)
  • 4k60 streaming
(too early to talk about this kind of things, we haven't even talked about the gaming aspect yet!)
  • 900p60
(does not make any sense, way too specific)

Hardware list:
1) no detail about the console
2) misses the power supply unit (!)
3) no word about storage
4) controller has no name, that is not the kind of things Nintendo usually do
5) nothing about other controllers compatibility and max nb of player
6) no documentation included in the list?
