Nintendo Life contributor Gonçalo "Shiryu" Lopes isn't just great at digging up classic Super Famicom games - he's also a keen music-maker and long-time fans of the site will know that he has produced many a fine tribute album in his time.
He's back with NLA Blues, an "original music tribute album to Nintendo Wii U's Xenoblade Chronicles X". This two-disc collection is the perfect aural accompaniment to the epic Wii U RPG, which Lopes has been playing solidly for the past few months and simply cannot stop talking to us about.
You can check out the entire album via the YouTube link below, and if you like what you hear and want to own it, then head over to Bandcamp right away.

You're really missing out on something special here @cfgk24 . I'm not talking about the album either. Play the game!
This one gives me a serious headache. Regardless... we all know the musical score in the original Xenoblade Chronicles game were much better than it is in X.
I don't understand what this music is. Is he trying to remix songs from the game?
@Aneira I disagree. I love the music in XCX more than XC.
@abbyhitter Original music tribute. I made music in the same vein as the styles of the soundtrack, a track for each landmark in New Los Angeles, 26 of them.
@Aneira True... but give this a shot. Who knows, you might like it.
@Aneira @abbyhitter Agreed--Sawano always writes amazing scores, and X is no exception. I find most of the music in the original Xenoblade completely unmemorable. Shame of it is, the original is such a good game. X is complete garbage. The score might be the only good thing about it lol.
@Shiryu Nice Job. Always enjoy your work and comments on this site. Always put me in a positive mood. Good luck.
@naut The storyline of XCX may not be up to par with XC, but I love the world of Mira more. I think they did a fantastic job with the overworld and the sheer size of it. I like the battle system and weapon customization in XCX a lot better too.
@abbyhitter Mira is a beautiful world, to be sure, but that's about it. I felt like the battle system in the original actually took timing and strategy--X's system is just like, "Climb in the most powerful Skell and spam the best attacks." A lot of the weapon customization is just overcomplicated fluff as well that doesn't have much of a real effect on anything. I beat the whole game--Definitely gave it more than a fair chance.
@naut
Short memory is a common decease. That might explain it. Name a few tracks that you seriously think are great? It's complete awful J-pop at it's worst. The first time you hear it, it's almost hilarious. Half an hour late it just gets tedious. Especially that horrible track when fighting in skells.
To name a few great ones of the original:
Colony 9 / Night
Gaur Plains
Eruyt Sea / Night
These are great ambient tracks. But if you're into J-pop... well... that's just... urgh... forget it.
When I first saw article about XCX I hoped it's something about update that fixes text size. I have collector edition from day one but didn't play much because text is just tooooo small and makes game unplayable for me.
If just Nintendolife could find something about that matter from Monolith...
@yannah21 Enjoy!
I haven't played this game in months and I'm a little more than halfway through the story.... I need to get back to it, but it's soooo much work than I have time for here lately.
@Shiryu YES! I know! lol! But time constraints!!!
@JesWood13 @cfgk24 "Xenoblade Chronicles X" is , much like the original; a harsh mistress and you will need to dedicate some time into it before you feel "at home" with it all, but stick with it and you will understand it was all well worth it because simply it's art. And art is always worth exploring.
@Aneira Most of the vocal tracks are fantastic. Yeah there a couple annoying ones, but most of them are great. If I were to tell someone about all the great songs in the soundtrack, leaving out the vocal anthems would be a crime--But just to humor you, here's a playlist of 10 amazing non-vocal tracks I slapped together in about 10 minutes.

I loved XCX's OST, so I'll have to give this a listen after work.
@Aneira Codename Z, Melancholia, Oblivia's day theme, the Tyrant theme, the Overdrive theme (it's name escapes me) are all, among others, awesome tracks in XCX.
@CroRock I don't understand those who complain about the text size. It's easily readable, yet it makes the HUD look rather transparent and open.
Sure, I suppose that on a 20" screen or a non-HD screen text size could be a problem...
@Aneira
I absolutely agree. I downright DISLIKED the music from XCX. All the dumb rapping and headache inducing vocals, mixed with subpar musical tracks just really bummed me out. XC was way better.
Just in my opinion.
@naut
Yeah, those are more up my alley. Thanks for sorting the good ones from the horrible. Those particular songs are not what you hear when playing the game for hours though. It would have been a much better experience if some of those were tracks when exploring instead of all that crazy j-pop. It makes my head risk a spontaneous cumbustion.
I gave up on xenoblade chronicles x, I don't like the combat system and there is too much grinding. I just don't have that much time to play is what I originally said but seeing as I put hours and hours on final fantasy tactics advance on virtual console I must just be that old guy who likes it better old style.
On a whole diff'rent pla net
@Aneira As someone who consumes an un-holy amount of J-pop, I don't think you know what J-pop is. J-pop (in a very broad sense) would be artists such as Kyarypamyupamyu or bands such as Perfume. If you don't like the vocal anthems in X, that's your own perfectly valid opinion--But those songs aren't "J-pop." They're vocal anthems blended with elements of rock, orchestral, and even rap--But that's not what J-pop is.
Nice work Shiryu applause 🎶👏
@naut
J-pop is also a synonym for awful. Thought you might get the point. I'm sure you did.
Watch your mouth
~Waluigi
"Hello?
Is this thing on?
I am on my own,
I need a bigger gun!"
Irk... The audio is one of the reasons I stopped playing this game. They are not singing, they are shouting. Shouting dull and ridiculous lyrics, with that. Tracks seem to loop way too fast and the music is also so loud that I can't understand half of the dialogues. Ironically, it is also one of the few games I ever played with no sound at all, because they didn't bother adding audio output for headphones on the GamePad. Beginner's mistake...
With all the bragging we made around this game being the ultimate gem of the Wii U's library, I am surprised and a bit disappointed there are still no updates or DLC. Nothing at all. Well, it seems the game didn't sell that well after all.
TRASH TALK!
@Aneira that's quite a closed view on music you have there
@xPH03N1Xx86 @Aneira Basically. Sorry that not everyone has your exact same tastes lol.
@Kroko Some of the songs are annoying for sure, and the audio/voice mixing is indeed terrible. The game, overall, is pretty awful. Still, the OST itself does have a lot of gems regardless.
@Aneira Japanese lyrics =/= J-Pop.
lol while I like the original XC music more, I do think the XCX soundtrack is brilliant and has some real gems. It's just a very different sound, to match the very different setting of the game.
I'm sure this guys music is awesome but surely, the perfect accompaniment to the game...is the music in the game?
@naut I have to strongly disagree regarding the game being "awful", I found it was a really good game, but I'll leave at that instead of arguing, as everyone has their own opinion.
@naut
Obviously many doesn't share your taste either. Calling XCX's soundtrack for great is to exaggerate. But there's always those odd ones out, swinging an axe about.
@xPH03N1Xx86 Hey, I'm not gonna call you out for having an opinion like some people.
@Aneira "...there's always those odd ones out, swinging an axe about."
^There sure are. lol
@Aneira glad you listed those tracks. The majority of XCX's music is only good because it's bad! Xenoblade's music made grinding a pleasure.
@Baker1000 There are only 2 tracks on NLA (Daytime and Nightime) but there are 26 landmarks in the city alone. So I ran wild with that.
@DoctorWily Thank you!
Great stuff @Shiryu. Can't believe I hadn't listened earlier although folks have mentioned it here before.
@NImH Another satisfied costumer. Glad you enjoyed.
Xenoblade Chronicles X is one of the greatest RPG's I've ever played. The gameplay was flat out AMAZING fun. And exploring the world? I spent several hundred hours exploring Mira and it still never got old.
The soundtrack was ok- wasn't the greatest but it was by no means bad. It was good enough.
Anyone who hasn't played this game should really give it a go- I've never explored such a vibrant, gigantic alien world in all of gaming. Sylvalum and Noctilus continents are UNBELIEVABLY awesome!
@Shiryu Listening to the first track right now on Bandcamp and it's really good! I might end up buying it. Congrats, Gonçalo!
@OrakioRob Thank you. I just noticed Damien did not mention, but you can grab a free MP3 version, just hit the video description.
Life some of the other commenters while I did enjoy X's soundtrack for the most part for me there is no denying that the original Xenoblade Chronicle's soundtrack is leagues above it in almost every way. That game has one of my favorite soundtracks of any games while though X's was good it just wasn't on that level for me. Both are great games though but the more focused story of the original causes it to win it in terms of which is my favorite.
I really enjoy the game, it is awesome, but the original is better in almost every aspect, soundtrackwise very much so. I can't imagine what went through the producers heads when the greenlighted the vocals. It still is a great game with some brilliant ideas and fantastic dcenery, just not as great as its older brother.
XCX's soundtrack was freakin' amazing and probably my favorite game soundtrack, so I'll bookmark this and give it a listen later. I did always think the different areas in NLA deserved to have their own specific themes. Looking forward to it.
Great work @Shiryu it's great music to work to
I love all the music for the all continents in XCX, both day and night time. Primordia day, Sylvalum day, Noctilum night, The Divine Roost, even that scratchy violin and bagpipe track from parts of Cauldros (and oddly the Nopon caravan at the Cleansing Spring in Sylvalum) are some of my favorite tracks. Sadly, I hear the Skell flight music most of the time now, not that I don't like it but more that it overrides all the music unless you're on the ground or enter areas with specific music. Anyway, I honestly want to keep playing and start messing around with ground gear/skell gear builds, 97.82% Mira survey and 485 hours logged, but only now, in post game, I'm starting to see the grind because all the equipment I want needs a ridiculous amount of materials (and I'd like to have some of those so I can clear out those last tyrants and missions) . I will probably keep going until Star Fox comes out but it'll be a sad day when I finally eject the disc. One day, I'll get XC and see what the fuss is about, but I know I'll have to treat both games as individual experiences so I can enjoy it better and not get caught up in this constant comparison mess.
@masterLEON Thanks. Yep, I played XCX all the way until "Pokkén Tournament" arrived, wil be giving a bit chunk of time to "Star Fox Zero" and "Star Fox Guard", but... I doubt I will be away from Mira for more than a few weeks because I still have a ton of things do do over there.
Great game so far (80hrs in) Seems to be more about the journey and finding yourself than a complex meaty story which is different in a good way.Its a continual learning process. learn something new all the time. I do have a long way to go. Hope i'm done by September 30th....Music is great to me and fits the game well although someone mentioned its more suited for anime and it makes sense. I like the fact this game is familiar yet sets itself apart from the original Xenoblade.
I quite enjoy the music in XCX. It can occasionally get annoying, but most songs are either alright or great. My favourite song in the game so far is when you battle a tyrant.
If I had played Chronicles before XCX, then I probably would have disliked XCX's music since I usually prefer the style of music in Chronicles.
@Shiryu I hear ya, even after 100% survey, I got all those "island tyrants" in the ocean, that one treasue box in the sky in Cauldros that you can't get to because Trueno, The Cataclysm is sitting ON the teleporter that gets you up there, the Colubriums in Yawning Giant, Talon Rock, and Mount M'Gando, and Telethia on my to-do list. I could probably knock those out in two weeks...probably.
@oats-81 Yeah, XCX I feel is more old school RPG in that sense that the story is more about your character and your decisions. Also, the NPCs here are responsible for most of the "story" of the game (even the unnamed NPC speech bubbled have stories that develop throughout the game!). Getting involved in their lives through their missions as you progress through the chapters makes them feel more "real" to me, if that makes sense. I'm gonna miss my people when I'm finally done.
Both games have great soundtracks, but Xenoblade has a significant edge. Also a far better game, though X is still quality.
Good effort on the album!
