Big companies can get a little carried away when celebrating a major anniversary, and that seems to be the case with The Pokémon Company. It commissioned British artist Quentin Devine to produce a mosaic of Pikachu, following up similar projects he's completed in the past such as a Mona Lisa and a Queen Elizabeth II mosaic made out of penny coins.
This time around he created a Pikachu using 12,987 trading cards - "measuring 71.54 square metres and hanging at over 10 metres tall and 7 metres wide" - which has been unveiled in Paris and sets a 'World Record'. Frankly, he could have got it up to a nice round number of 13,000 cards, but we're being petty.
It's rather impressive to look at - check it out below.

WOAH!
Do Pokemon cards still exist?
I think the Pokemon Company loves their mascot more than Nintendo loves Mario.
@Majora_MOOBS Um....yes?
@Majora_MOOBS No. They disappeared. All of them.
I wonder how many of those cards are throw-away bellsprouts.
@FormalAnnoyance I think I can take a guess at where 12,987 of them might be.
Imagine trying to attach Energy cards to that.
Amazing!
So many Energy cards.
That's a lot of electric type energy cards. This is quite impressive.
Next step:
Recreate the decks of finalists for this years Pokémon TCG Worlds finals. Remember, each deck has 60 cards. It would literally be the hugest final battle in TCG history.
I wonder how long this took to make. It's looking pretty nice.
In response to the tagline:
Nearly 13K Pokemon cards, that's pretty impressive!
That's really impressive.
I bet they where all 2nd edition cards.
@KTT We always knew Pikachu was full of energy
Ironically, this is just barely more than half the pixel-count of the original GB screen (23 040). More than enough for cool pixel art
