I played the game from front to back and I absolutely disagree with this review. This is a rather good game, not perfect but very enjoyable. Do give it a chance if you like 3d platformers from the ps2/n64 Era.
Live service games don't work and are always crap. Microtransactions will turn serious players off your game. Putting microtransactions in paid game is a mistake that costs more. Selling out when you have a vision always is a failure.
You'd think game companies would have learned their lesson by now.
@somebread Then play some more and tell me again how the enemies actively are any kind of danger. Level design can be objectively bad. You are wrong in that too. There is a reason why some games are classics and hold up despite their age. Sometimes it's level design. If it can be good it can be bad. Yeah Mario and Kirby have super underwhelming power ups sometimes. But they have good ones too. That's the main difference. Yes hundreds of games have a really bad story but they still may have good gameplay. Look at the whole Mario series. It may not be the most important but it helps to give a game some soul if it's lacking in other departments. And given the lack of gameplay elements, having the bugs they have in Balan is unforgivable. Mario Odyssey may have some glitches but they come from a wealth of possibilities while thebrest of the game is polished to a sheen.
If you enjoy something that's objectively bad, no problem. You might enjoy eating burnt things and driving with a flat tire while smoking cigarettes, but telling other people that it is a good thing while it's supposed to be your job to know about the subject is still objectively a bad thing. If you can't see it, it's useless to talk any more. Just don't bother.
@somebread Except it is broken. The AI is a mess, the level design is horrendous, the power ups range from situational to ridiculous, the controls make the game actively harder on the story is not even worthy of a children's book (person is sad, you platform in their mind and fight a nightmare, thry get better and they dance for some reason). And the game has quite a lot of bugs too (undermap glitches and such). You claim nothing is objectively bad but it is. This game is bad. Objectively so. Even if you don't agree. That's the thing about objectivity. You can keep trying to say the contrary but it won't change anything.
@somebread you obviously don't understand a thing about my point. It's not about tastes. It's not about comparison. It's about a "professional" trying to defend something that's very obviously objectively bad on every level. And that's, once again, not an opinion. Balan is a lesson in how not to do a video game. One might enjoy it for a strange reason and that's valid, but it's still bad in every way. Just Aliens Colonial Marines or Ride to hell retribution. And seeing someone trying to say they're not bad is baffling
@somebread If it was just an opinion it wouldn't be so bad. I don't like games and I can read articles about games I don't like without cringing through the whole thing. But reading so much crap from someone pretending to be a professional is mind boggling. Balan is objectively a disaster, where ever single game design decision serves to hurt the experience or show how much was planned and never done or done wrong. This is not an opinion. It's a lesson in how not to make a video game. Having a so called called defending it and wanting another one over Boswer's Fury is like some complimenting a burnt piece of toast and asking for more while denying a chef's specialty dish. And then calling themselves a critic. Journalism is hurt because this kind of "opinion" hurts the whole profession by making potentially good writers like clowns.
Well if that's what you think, Stuart Gipp, you are part of the problem with game journalists today. Balan Wonderworld is a steaming pile of crap and it is a stain on Yuji Naka's reputation.
Damn I still have nightmares about Half Genie Hero's french translation where Shantea and Abner threw the f word at each other... I'm very afraid. O even wrote to Wayforward, which I never do, to tell them just how bad the translation was...
Let the Metacritic haters do their thing. I'll just bask in their salty tears and enjoy my game. Everyone KNOWS what it's worth anyway, thanks to actual site reviews.
Yeah, let's rush games in order to release them for the holidays! Look at EA, they're doing it all the time and their games are always top quality and they are loved by their public!
I think a Bayonetta stage would fit, with her demons being stage hasard and Fatality inducers, but I don't think seeing the witch being torn into little pieces herself is something I wanna see...
I can get that getting lost can be an issue for some, but I LOVE GETTING LOST! I'm picking this up on day one. Especially if there are some hints if I'm well and truly hopeless with the update.
I'll wait for the test from Nintendolife, as I tend to trust them, but I'm pretty sure I'll end up buying the game. Kicking ass as a princess is a rare pleasure. (except in Smash. Peach main.)
All I can really understand is "try to work ahead of time and use the tools at your disposal instead of waiting until the last minute and shipping a wreck."
@TheOpponent The Mummy Demastered certainly lacked soul, and had issues, but WayForward still got us the Shantae games, which are very fun (and they have their own set of issues too). I'm sure they'll be a strong asset to the IGA team, with he right guidance. They're real big fans of Catlevania, they won't want to mess that chance up!
Looks awesome! Won't back it though, I'm kinda burned by the waiting I endured on Shantae, Yooka-Laylee, and still on Indivisible and Bloodstained. I'll happily buy it when it's out!
Campaining is useless now, but we can still dream. How about:
1- Shantae (I'm a fan-boy, ok? But still a good indie rep) 2- Tails (Because Sonic is lonely) 3- A Resident Evil Rep like Jill (possible trap character abit like Snake, plus RE is a legacy series) 4- Crash Bandicoot (or Rayman. Both are platform legends and could get a spot) 5- Chibi-Robo (the little guy deserves some love!)
Hahaha, the salt from the tears of crybabies knows no end. We have a game with more than 70 characters, 100 stages, many mode, great multiplayer, and they still cry because their choice character didn't make it in. Grow up. I'm a Shantae supporter myself, along with some others like Bajo and Kazooie or Isaac,, and I don't care if she's just a spirit, or assist or not there. Piranha Plant was hilarious, Ken more than deserves his place, like all the characters, and I'll be happy to have as much fun as I can with this game
Those are still very good numbers. Games have been plentiful and of quality (I don't what rock those who say the contrary are living under) and holiday season is still on the horizon, with Smash looming and Pokemon looming ahead. No reason to worry, but investors are mostly a bunch of stupid meatheads who can't see further than their own nose.

4) Never go out
5) Stay there until you're forgotten
