Yooka-Laylee developer Playtonic Games looks set to share details on its next game as soon as tomorrow, according to a cheeky tease.
Lovingly crafted from some of the creative talent behind games like Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country, Yooka-Laylee is currently the first and only game from the UK-based studio. Fans have been rather desperate to see more for some time now, so any new reveal should hopefully go down a treat.
As for what the game might be? Well, your guess is as good as ours. Yooka-Laylee was initially presented as being the first game in a series, so we'd certainly expect to see a sequel or new project in the same universe, but it could be just as interesting to see a whole new game, too.
The tease comes from the studio's Twitter account, where it says that it'll "Bee back tomorrow".
If you're intrigued to see what this new game could be, make sure to check back with us tomorrow; we'll make sure to cover any announcements right here on Nintendo Life.

Never played the first one, just wasn't sold on it.
BEE back tomorrow? Looks like a clue to me!
@ROBLOGNICK The game sequel to Bee movie!
If the levels felt more like worlds and less 'constructed' and the gameplay was more modern with the same concepts of the dual character without the annoying voice sample talk.(it gets old quick)
I might be into it.
Buck Bumble reboot?
i just bought yooka laylee a few weeks ago and have been having a blast with it! not sure how well a sequel would go though. the first game is great, but the second game would just be like “...now collect THESE things, from THIS evil corporation”.
The villain in the original was vaguely bee based.
@ImprobableToast That's what I thought as well. And if so and well done, could be a sleeper hit. I remember the original being really fun back in the day
"bee back"? Isn't the antagonist named Capital Bee?
Whatever it is, I hope it's a better experience than Yooka-Laylee. Was really disappointed how boring it was to play.
What these guys did back in the N64 days means they deserve at least one more shot to do something right after their previous disaster of a game. I look forward to checking out their new work.
Awesome. It'd better be a 3D platformer. We don't have enough of those.
adding on to my previous comment, yooka-laylee’s target audience is those with nostalgia who played banjo and/or other collectathons on the n64 as a kid. of COURSE people who never played those games would find this game boring! that being said, i think a sequel would be unwise as this target audience is only so large, and it would be wiser to appeal to more people. if they want to do another nostalgia or retro inspired game, it should appeal to more people than just those who played banjo, or have some modern appeal.
@Franklin Banjo-Kazooie also had a decent focus on honey and bees. But this is probably Yooka-Laylee 2, because I just can't see the miracle of a Nintendo/MS/Playtonic collaboration ever happening, much less being announced before E3.
please use smaller worlds this time
If it is a YL sequel, it needs to be more Kazooie than Tooie: tightly designed levels with some clever puzzles, better controls and less too-ing and fro-ing to play boring, badly designed mini games. The original Banjo Kazooie is a brilliant template to be modernised.
Kazooie is better than Tooie. And that game could be improved (basic modern QoL and design principles should be more than capable of this).
@Ralizah That'd be a good call
The look of Yooka is sooo boring. Banjo had a pants, backpack, cool neckless. Yooka should have had a pants too and a cool jacket
Right but where's that promised DLC?
Twooka-Laylee
Give them a chance. I'm sure they learned a bit on the last go round.
Ooooooooohhhhhhh boooooyyyyyyy the good news just keeps rolling in these days!
Bee right back?? Bee... Bee, bee, bee...
Bees make honey... and honey... honey is loved by... BEARS. Banjo is a bear... and he collects... honeycombs!! Which are made by bees!!
Banjo Threeie confirmed!!
Buck Bumble! Just putting that here....
First game was amazing despite a lackluster final world. I have high hopes and I’m excited. People who have been pining for a new BK experience yet hate on this very loyal continuation of BK should be ashamed.
I want a new Donkey Kong Country game, in 2D. You could make it if Retro studios is busy. I prefer 2D over 3D gameplay as I didn’t like DK64 nor Yooka-Laylee..
Wow, surprised by the venom in here. Seems YL is extremely polarising- which is odd since I thought the reviews at the time were consistently average - not this extreme.
Considering the length of development time for the first game, surely this will either be DLC or a direct sequel reusing those assets.
Just make the best 3D platformer you guys can – free from the nostalgic obligations of your first venture.
But for goodness sakes let it be another 3D platformer first and foremost.
I'm well aware Yooka Laylee wasn't that great, but i think it would be stupid to not give Playtonic Games a second chance. I'm sure it'll be a better game
More Yooka-Laylee, please. I love it. I admit the game was not good at PC launch, but the patch they pushed out when the Switch version released fixed a lot of my complaints.
The only thing I don't like are some of Rextro's games. I love Rextro as a character, though.
Yooka-Laylee seemed to really hurt Playtonic's reputation, but when they were Rare, their games were still very hit-or-miss, in my opinion. DKC 1 was a game changer, and the sequel is even more beloved by many. Of course, people also love Banjo-Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, Conker, and Golden Eye 007. But DKC 3 was very "meh," I strongly disliked DK 64, and as I understand it, Star Fox Adventures wasn't great, to name a few. Since Yooka-Laylee had a kickstarter, I guess the expectations were understandibly high, but I think it's important to understand that even before Yooka-Laylee, the Rare/Playtonic devs weren't always perfect. That being said, I actually quite liked Yooka-Laylee, despite a number of quality of life issues.
There's alot of great talent at Playtonic which made me back their kickstarter for that special physical release. I bet Playtonic will really shine with their next game especially after all the fixes they released for Yooka-Laylee.
I hope it a sequel but 2D and plays like DKC.
@antonio2244 But the last two Donkey Kong Country games were 2D Well 2.5D, it's not like the pre-render look is needed these days even one of them is on the Switch
Why do they all start announcing games before E3.
Is it because they never made the cut for the E3 teaser trailers sections?
Never played yoka lay lee after so much negative nonsence around the release, and Nintendo console being left til last for release and patches.
Then the whole it's a digital only.......but months later oh it's now hard copy as well so in your face day one digital purchasers!
Goldeneye 2 lol
Hm. On Instagram, Fangamer just put up a picture of something golden hidden in the sand surrounded by what look like bear and bird prints.
EDIT: Cheeky! It was a Spelunky box underneath, but that doesn't explain the tracks.
@Majora101
Thank you for the recommendation, I'll definitely keep Star Fox Adventures in consideration. You have a surprising amount of positive words to say about it, so I'll try to disregard those pre-conceived ideas. I certainly do like the puzzle/exploration aspect of Zelda and, frankly, I've never cared for the score attack gameplay of Star Fox, so maybe Adventures is what I need.
I downloaded Donkey Kong 64 from the Wii U Virtual Console but just couldn't get into it, partly because I thought the character movement felt way too slow compared to something like Super Mario 64. Maybe I should pay that one another visit, too.
@PBandSmelly Yooka Laylee was advertised as a nostalgia game. Most people either loved it or hated it as such. In a way it was kind of what the next Banjo Kazooie game might have been like had Rare stayed with Nintendo. I played the game after it launched on PS4 and then finally received my Kickstarter redemption on Switch. The version that released on Switch was almost night and day better than the version I played on PS4. They spent a loooong time tweaking the gameplay and camera systems to make it run better.
Conker’s Bad Fur Day?
I enjoyed Yooka-Laylee and never played any B-K, so for me at least, nostalgia wasn't part of the equation. Looking forward to the reveal.
They need to do whatever they can to get the controls/feel down, YL felt like an absolute chore to control and this became even more exposed after Odyssey released, there is nothing about movement in that game and even BK that inspires the feeling that you can accomplish some fluid out of the box feats with them unlike with Mario 64/Odyssey.
@ImprobableToast - Could that even be a thing for Playtonic?
I thought Buck was owned by some asset squatter in Canada.
@Not_Soos Not sure that I'd call it "the most polished Star Fox game ever made," but it was certainly as enjoyable as Starlink - surface-level fun with a different twist. Even then, the lack of polish applies only to select minigames, bosses, and scene transitions. Go into it expecting a LoZ-clone (gameplay genre warning) from Rareware (character writing warning) where Fox finally gets a love interest, and you get a decent little experience. JonTron and others smacked it around for not being another On Rails. As valid as that is (and yet remains for this franchise!!!), we had plenty of warning of what was coming back in the day, so that expectation should have already flown out the window. Definitely play if you're looking for something to do. And grab/mix some tropical drinks!
test1234567
@ReaderRagfish it counts characters, not words. According to test results from my research, you need to type at least 11 characters for your post to get through.
@Not_Soos Their dip in quality only really showed after the jump from the 64, everything between that and the SNES was mostly great.
Killer instinct, Perfect Dark, Conker's bad fur day, Rare had no shortage of new ideas and they were an absolute boon on 64 owners everywhere.
The only rare games from that time period I'd acuse of questionable design are Banjo tooie and Donkey Kong 64, both of them confusing more content for better content.
Sweet holy Jesus Christ NO ! Laylee was bad enough.
In the early 70’s, I went in for a minor face lift, just a small tightening procedure.... I now look like a fox being pushed through a plastic sheet and the pain is horrific. I would rather relive this than play through this travesty again. NO NO NO NO AND NO.
How about a re-vamped Beetlejuice ? https://www.polygon.com/2018/3/30/17182126/rare-beetlejuice-video-game-nes
well I hope it's better then yooka. that game was a mess
@-DG that makes sense to me
@Paraka
Honestly was just the first thing that came to mind with bee game hints. Sad to here about the asset squatter though.
By the end of its updates, Yooka-Laylee was my favorite PC platformer. A bit of a rough start, particularly without the option to turn off the gibberish speech, but patches improved it tremendously.
If it wasn't a kickstarter game, maybe they'd have felt that they could hold it back another 6 months for the polish it really needed to shine instead of launching a tad too early (IMO) and patching later. Regardless, excited for what they've got next!
@JHDK @PBandSmelly be 100% honest, have either of you played Yooka-Laylee? I ask because, while it was nowhere close to being a great game, I think the only way you can come to describe it as a 'disaster' or 'garbage' is by having seen online reactions to it. It wasn't fantastic at all, it was fine, but to throw so much hate on to it really only seems to be from riding the Internet hate that the game received. It wasn't a terrible game or even a bad game. It was just okay. This sort of hyperbole is only detrimental.
I, for one, am very excited for any upcoming project from these provenly talented people.
@Not_Soos @Majora101 I would like to jump on the Starfox Adventures love train. If you go in expecting a Starfox game, you'll be disappointed. However, go in expecting an action RPG with great atmosphere, writing, level variety and worlds and you'll be very happy. I will stand by this game until the day I die. It was a whole lot of fun and I would do unspeakable things for a remaster, as unlikely as that may be
@ImprobableToast - Yeah, the moment you mentioned it my ears perked in hope that Buck (and by extension, Quest) were saved.
But it has been a while since I tracked them. I could easily be crossing the asset squatter company with the low quality EU mobile game company that I found out owns Vexx and others.
May be crossed wires, but the Acclaim stuff seemed to have been recovered by Nightdive. So there's hope.
Really enjoyed Buck Bumble back in the day, though. Aged horribly, but that entry music.
I'm hoping for a racing game... with an Adventure Mode... and you collect ballons!
@gaga64 Yeah, I don't quite get it either. I played the game to 100% completion with my girlfriend, and it was pretty darn good if you ask me. It had a few frustrating elements, but it was still a joy to play.
Twoka Laylee
@MajorasLapdog Yes, I have played it and it's kinda a jerk move to assume I'm lying just because I think it's a bad game. I bought on 12.15.17, the day after it was released on Switch, for $39.99. (I keep a Google Doc of all the dates, names and prices of the Switch games I buy to see how much I spend every year.) My Switch says I've played it for "3 hours or more" because I wanted to like it. Some parts were fun but overall I think the bad far outweighed the good.
Banjo-Threeie
Hey, a guy can dream...
Yooka Laybee, where laylee gets turned into a bee by Capital B
So something bee related, that's for sure.
It's hip to - wait, family friendly site, sorry.
@Jokerwolf Hah I called it lmao.
