Earlier, we shared the news that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has now received its promised performance update on Nintendo Switch, taking the game from Version 1.02 to 1.03. The update has been long-awaited by fans who were left disappointed with the game upon release.
As such, we thought it best to also share with you this side-by-side comparison video so that you can see the changes for yourself. The video comes courtesy of Direct-Feed Games; after giving this a good once over ourselves, we'd say it's tricky to really notice any significant changes in the visuals department, but players are reporting much-improved load times and a decrease in input lag.
Those load times have reportedly been slashed by "up to 70%" and other issues like game-crashing bugs have also been addressed. If you stopped playing the game at launch thanks to its performance issues, now might be the time to jump back in for another go.
Will you be loading it up once again now that the new update is in place? Let us know in the comments below.

Good. I tortured myself by playing the game just from the cartridge and I managed to beat it with 9 crashes total.
However I don't see myself playing the game again. IGAs Castlevania games I could replay forever. Bloodstained just don't have that appeal for me
Loading times are frankly the only thing I notice. Graphical improvements are beyond my perception even when pausing the video above, and I spent a good five minutes testing various stuff - from jumps to backstep to combos - to detect any "input lag" reduction this morning. Guess the prerequisite is to have felt it before, too. Still, not to look the patch horse in the mouth and dismiss the developers' effort (although it ironically treated me to my first ever semi-crash to date, with the game getting stuck on the very first Bloodstained logo screen after the update).😅
Finally, too bad I’m in the thick of way to many RPGs,
Maybe I'm just not as picky about these things or don't know what I'm looking for but i can't really see a difference.
Both screens look identical to me.
The game looks generally cleaner and faster, and it's a great improvement! I'm really motivated to get the good ending now!
I'm too busy with DQ XI at the moment. I'll get around to Bloodstained eventually.
A bit hard to compare on a Youtube video, but it definitely looks slightly sharper. I presume it will be more noticeable in docked mode. Played and completed it on PC though in 4K 60fps without it crashing once when it was first released. Tempted to get it again on Switch as I loved it now it has been improved.
Too many games, not enough time, not enough money, very sad face.
Much too little much too late.
Already finished the game, but I may go back and walk around a little bit in the game to see if I notice a difference.
Maybe it's because I played this game almost entirely in handheld mode, but I never really noticed much performance issue, nor did I find the increased load time a hindrance (except for a couple of oddities). The small screen does hide framerate drops better than on a TV, though.
Wait.... does the game run slower and choppier in the outside spiral tower area after the patch?! That's what it looked like in the video to me...
The turbulent launch just made me lose interest in this game. I played it during the first week on XBox One, then the chest glitch put me off. Never came back and I doubt I will.
I'm happy to see things are getting better for Switch owners, though.
To be honest, this feels way too late. It's cool that they're trying to fix the game, but it shouldn't have been released in the state it was originally. The damage is done.
but still far to a good game
This is the last time I buy a Kickstarter game. Luckily, I didn't fund the Kickstarter itself, but the more games I play from all these developers that break away from their major companies, the less inclined I am to get them in the future.
Look at Death Stranding, as an example. Kojima, on his own, made a mediocre fetch quest game. Great. I'll pass. I wish I passed on Bloodstained, but the 8-bit game was amazing, and the music is even more so and it caused me to bite. Boy am I disappointed!
Glad to see that unlike certain AAA developers, IGA and pals do try to improve their game. Undecided on whether I should resume it at last, or wait further for 1.04, which is said it'll feature even more improvements. Got plenty of other games to play in the meantime.
Am I the only one that really didn't see that much of a difference, performance-wise🤔
God bless SONY!!!
Seems like I'm getting the game soon,as soon as it's fully fixed
I will buy it for pennies in a sale on PSN. I would not give them full price money on Switch after releasing such a broken game.
The sizes of textures and effect maps are still reduced via automatic procedures rather than by hand.
Even on the main character.
Y tho.
Why would you NOT take the time to get these aspects looking a little less "I dunno lol, guess the system is weak lol!".
Reflects poorly on whoever is handling this.
I still don't think the games looks interesting.
The graphics should've been hand drawn animation. I get they probably didn't have the time/budget for that so they just made it all polygons but I think it'd look much better.
I'm not a Castlevania fan at all so these games don't really resonate with me.
It addressed the crashing and stuff? Hooray! I can finally buy it!
@SmileMan64 What will 1.04 do?
@Zuljaras 9 crashes?! How aggravating! Xo
@Tempestryke Well I first played in on PS4 and knew exactly where to go and what to do.
The Switch run was supposed to be faster but I lost some farming on it dues to those crashes. And the worst of all is that the crashes occurred mostly when initiating dialog with NPCs.
Btw I don't know if you are sarcastic or not and that is why I explain why 9 is way too much for me.
@Zuljaras No, I wasn't being sarcastic. I was sympathizing with you. That many crashes is insane. I woulda been upset after the first one.
@Tempestryke Well on PS4 I think I had 4 crashes for 100% map coverage which is not good either
@Zuljaras No its not good at all. Did they ever fix that version?
Look, I can understand crashing if its a super old game, or if it sustained damage or something. But it shouldn't be happening in a brand new one.
@Tempestryke Actually this is a staple now to have such issues on day 1. The devs today are rushed to release faster with tighter dates.
This is not an issue because people will still buy their games even after the 5555th being a mess.
@Zuljaras
shakes head
I guess I've been pretty lucky. I've only ever had a few modern games freeze on me. All 3 Wii Skylanders, Mighty No. 9 and Rayman Origins. Haven't had a modern game crash yet.
knocks on wood
@Tempestryke I had the following crash on me couple of times:
1. Zelda BotW
2. Zelda Link's Awakening
3. Skyrim
4. The Witcher 3
5. Diablo 3
@Zuljaras That sucks.
@DawgP I was thinking the same, I hope they made a mistake and put the videos in the wrong position.
Been waiting for this and hoping for a sale now that they've patched it. Just 100%'d Ori which was a wonderful experience so now looking for the next one.
It's too late for me. They lost a full price sale from me when they launched in an obviously unready state. This wasn't some little bug they found and fixed day 1, it was bad enough it took months for this first patch to try and fix it.
I'm not even buying it at this point as it's on Gamepass, so I'll play it there eventually.
I'm glad I waited for this title. I knew I wouldn't play it unless it was on the switch and I am glad that they worked on fixing it. Might be a good christmas present to ask for.
Never played this until the 1.03 patch came out today. ONE thing really bugs me and ive done it 3 times in the first 20 mins. Lots of times when the + prompt (for compendium/demon info) pops up on the bottom right corner of the screen during gameplay, I tend to instinctively push + to read it straight away ... the + prompt also pops up just before or during cutscenes ... meaning when I instinctively push it, it actually skips the cutscenes. Having the same button for skipping scenes/readin stuff is just stupid!!
I played through the entire game this summer on switch, aside from a couple crashes I had no issues. The game was fantastic.
@DawgP I had that impression, also. They definitely the right way round? If so, poor show.
@CupidStunt Do you often go to your hairdresser to purchase Sony software?
@Tempestryke Not sure, I just know that they'll improve the game further, from what I read.
@DawgP according to that video. I noticed that too.
Okay good. I guess now is the time to move it up higher in my GameFly queue.
@SmileMan64 Alright. Thanks.
If you jump and swing a big sword you always swing it again when you land. This is literally the only 'glitch' I've ever experienced
I’ve purposely never updated the game since I got the physical edition at launch. Just the other day I played before applying the patch, and then played again after the patch.
I noticed the improved load times, and slightly more responsive controls, but visually nothing has changed in handheld mode.
This is what we’ve waited all this time for?!? Even with a second patch coming soon with lesser improvements, this is unacceptable.
I’m just going to take this as a lesson learned, the hard way. Thankfully I have Xbox Game Pass, I’ll played Bloodstained there instead. I paid for the game so I’m going to at least play it somewhere better since I’m fortunate to have the option.
Iga and has team have completely lost my support. I don’t care if they make a Bloodstained 2, I’m not giving him or his team another penny for their shady development. They’ve been added to the blacklist along with EA and Activision.
@DawgP
LOL, it does! This game has been such a dumpster fire. I haven’t been this mad at buying a game and feeling cheated in about a decade. I even bought Anthem at launch, so this is bad.
I really loved Curse of the Moon on Switch and was set on getting this one as well but I was put off because of the reviews. Is it worth getting now?
@Kang81 amen - can't believe how "ok" so many people are with this. If ya talk down on it people call you a pixel wh**e or something.
@UnbidSea If it's Switch or nothin', then I say sure. I am a backer and have it on PC and Switch. My experience having played the game through on normal is one crash, a few times of game slowdown when particle effects ramped up, and several room transitions with longer loading times than other platform versions (especially annoying when the transition is jumping up into a room; just keep holding that jumplp button so you get the height and don't fall back down right away). And, of course, overall graphics quality is lesser than other platforms that can max the settings out. But my experience has been that the Switch version (digital download) is totally playable.
That said, if other platforms are equally good/viable for you, get it there instead.
