Re: Anniversary: It's One Year Since Nintendo Showed Us The Switch

KirbyTheVampire

I was never so hyped for a console before the Switch in my life. Watching that video and realizing that the newest Nintendo system with the best hardware idea for a console ever (IMO) would have games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Breath of the Wild, and Mario Odyssey in its first year was extremely exciting, especially since I never bothered with the Wii U but was bummed that I missed games like MK8 and Splatoon.

Really excited to see what games we'll be getting over the course of the Switch's lifespan.

Re: Soapbox: Breath Of The Wild Is Amazing, But Is It The 3D Zelda That Enthusiasts Expected?

KirbyTheVampire

@Rocketjay8 Yeah, to say it's an average game is completely rediculous. It definitely held my interest for the 70-80 hours I played it. And I can fully admit to being overly nitpicky about it, but if anything that's just because there's some serious potential in Zelda becoming an open world series, and I want more than anything for future Zeldas to be the masterpieces that this game could have been and came pretty close to being (IMO).

@Oat Yeah, it's really annoying how the super-fans act like people are complete idiots and Debby Downers for having anything negative to say. It gets especially annoying when they say "This game has almost universal 10/10s and is one of the highest rated games on Metacritic, so that means you're not allowed to dislike anything about it".

Don't get me wrong, I love Zelda games, but this mentality that we're not allowed to have anything negative to say about them has got to stop. The majority of even the harshest critics will admit that BoTW is a great game anyway, or at least a really good one. I just wish all the super-fans would go somewhere else where they can marvel at the flawlessness of the "intrinsic design" of the game, and leave people who have even one negative thing to say alone.

No one is forcing you people to read the article. Besides, for every negative article, there's 5 dozen more that practically worship the game, so I suggest heading to those comment sections if you want to interact with other BoTW worshipers.

@Starbuster While it does do some elements better than Skyrim, like the puzzles and combat (and some might prefer the visuals of BoTW, but that's really an individual thing, especially when you mod Skyrim), but I feel like Skyrim did pretty much everything else better. The whole time I played Skyrim, I had such a sense of wonder and discovery because there was always some new secret to find, quite often in some very inconspicuous places. I had the same experience with Breath of the Wild....for the first 20 hours or so. After that point, I realized how samey and not really interesting everything was.

In Skyrim, you'd climb a mountain and there would always be interesting and unique things and secrets to find, not only on the other side of the mountain, but on the mountain itself as well. In BoTW, you climb a mountain, usually find nothing on it save for a few rocks with Koroks under them or something, and then on the other side you'll probably find monster camps, Korok "puzzles", and maybe a shrine or two. While BoTW was very fun, it didn't feel nearly as much like a living, breathing world as Skyrim did.

I really like the open world format for Zelda, but there was a number of things that could have been done better.

-The music, while good, was pretty unmemorable compared to previous Zelda games. I actually liked the music in the trailers way more than I liked the music in the actual game.

-The side quests were just fetch quests and "go here, kill this" quests and other boring stuff you could find in any MMO. Complete waste of time.

-I honestly can't remember any of the NPC's names outside of the main story characters and Beedle. Completely forgettable.

-The world was pretty empty. With some exceptions, you mostly can't find cool and unique locations like you can in a game like Skyrim. You'd mostly just find a monster camp, a shrine, or an extremely boring Korok seed puzzle that you've probably already done over a dozen times already.

-The story was decent, but it wasn't as good as the stories in previous Zelda games IMO. I feel like if the game was a bit more linear and we actually experienced the events that occurred in the game 100 years ago, rather than seeing quick snippets through Link's memories, it could have been a fantastic story.

-I really like the shrine system, but they were mostly too short and simple for me.

-The Divine Beasts were pretty solid, but not all that memorable, and too short. Plus, the bosses at the end were just pathetic. So lame and unimaginative.

-Poor enemy variety.

-Not much sense of progression, since you're already given most of your abilities at the start of the game.

-Pretty boring and one-dimensional main characters.

It's still a great game, but it could have been better, and it hardly felt like a Zelda game in many aspects.

Re: Nintendo is Reportedly Eager to See More Mature Games on the Switch

KirbyTheVampire

@MsgBoardGamer I can't speak for others on the topic of mature games, but personally, it doesn't affect me because I have my PS4 for any mature games I'm interested in playing. However, I would love to have more mature games on the Switch, not only because the Switch is portable and being able to play those games away from the TV would be very nice, but also because it's a sign of Nintendo becoming less restrictive and more accepting of third parties. More third party support can only be a good thing, because the more third party games there are, the more people will buy the system, and thus Nintendo will be even more inclined to produce quality games. But again, I never have and never will buy a Nintendo console for third party stuff, unless a few generations down the road we have a much improved third party situation.

I do agree that people should try to avoid bashing games too much. While I don't think there's anything wrong with saying "Meh, not for me", there's a point where it just gets ridiculous, and I think that's where people take issue with Anti-Matter. While I respect his decision to not play mature games, he does get pretty over-zealous and has a bit of a holier-than-thou attitude about the whole thing, which kinda rubs people the wrong way.

But yes, while I think it's reasonable for people to get annoyed with Anti-Matter's attitude about mature games, they should also take care to not do the same thing with games that they don't enjoy. Of course, I'm also guilty of bashing games more than is really necessary, just like most people are.

Re: Nintendo is Reportedly Eager to See More Mature Games on the Switch

KirbyTheVampire

@MsgBoardGamer I don't really think it's that strange that people feel that way. Nintendo has definitely gotten the short end of the stick in the mature games department for the past while, and there's a lot more opportunity for quality games to appear on the system if Nintendo actually allows a lot of games that aren't Teen and under.

Just Dance, on the other hand, is a pretty simple series that doesn't change at all, and most people who aren't super casual gamers would rather play games like Breath of the Wild or Mario Odyssey than they would Just Dance.

In a nutshell, it's a lot easier to feel excited for a super broad category of games than it is to feel excited for one of the most stagnant and simple game series out there. And I really don't think that disliking a single game series is anywhere near as close-minded as avoiding any games that aren't rated Teen and under.

Re: Nintendo Download: 12th October (North America)

KirbyTheVampire

@Ralizah When did I ever say I skip games just because they're low budget? Stardew Valley is one of my favorite games, and it was made by one guy. I'm just saying I find it kind of weird how every single week people have like 3-5 new indies they're super pumped for, whereas I usually only see one I would legitimately consider buying once in a blue moon. But then again, I own a decent PC, so I could see how Nintendo-only gamers would be especially enticed. Plus, I'm kinda cheap when it comes to games.

Re: Here Are the Key Lessons that Nintendo Learned from the Wii U

KirbyTheVampire

@Pupito I prefer them too, I'm just saying it's a pretty subjective thing. Besides, there's always the grip, which I didn't really have any problems with. I just figured I might as well get the slightly better option in the form of the Pro controller, since I'll be using the thing for the next 5 or 6 years, but I could have managed fine without it.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE You might have already mentioned this, but I don't feel like looking through all the comments, so I thought I'd ask if you've tried the grip?

Re: Here Are the Key Lessons that Nintendo Learned from the Wii U

KirbyTheVampire

@Pupito I wouldn't say either side is right. Whether a person likes a controller or not is a totally subjective thing. Some people love them, some people don't. Personally, they're not my first choice, but I could adjust if I was forced to use them.

Either way, I don't think his opinion holds much weight, since it sounds like he just held them for 30 seconds or something and decided he'd basically rather die than hold a JoyCon. It takes time to adjust to any controller. For example, when I first got my PS4, I didn't like the Dualshock 4 at all and wished I could keep using the Dualshock 3, but now I really dislike the Dualshock 3 compared to the 4.

Re: Here Are the Key Lessons that Nintendo Learned from the Wii U

@BlueOcean I wouldn't care if it was your favorite or anything lol, sorry if it looked like I was trying to gang up on you or something. (You probably weren't thinking that, but just in case)

But yeah the Gamecube was awesome, especially for its time. Unfortunately I haven't played many N64/SNES games, but there are some I plan on playing eventually.

Re: North America Gets a Neat Halloween-Themed Splatoon 2 Splatfest

KirbyTheVampire

@Dev Even if it was controllable, how often would such a power really be useful in the modern world? Literally no one could be allowed to see you, because having your secret be revealed would be a huge, huge problem. You'd probably be captured and experimented on, and you'd never get your old life back. Besides, something like a vampires mind control would be a lot more useful than mauling someone to death, not to mention all their other powers.

Re: Review: FIFA 18 (Switch)

KirbyTheVampire

I find realistic sports games in general mind-numbingly boring, and it really surprises me that they're as popular as they are, but I'm glad that this seems like an okay port.
