@ThanosReXXX I don't see what I'm not getting. What I meant by "thought process" is that they're changing things with the thought process that the change is for the better. Otherwise, they wouldn't do it. Most game developers obviously don't change things just for the sake of changing them.
Either way, I do generally agree with you. I personally thought the shrines were mostly far too simple and short, but I think it's a solid foundation for dungeons in future games. I just hope they're not quite so bite-size next time, even if it means there are less of them.
@ThanosReXXX I get what you meant, I just don't think changing something about a game with a certain thought process behind it automatically makes it a good change.
Ultimately, they can make whatever Zelda game they want, but I don't think it's wrong for me to voice my opinions, or that I'm trying to belittle Nintendo or make them feel bad about their game. I just didn't like certain aspects of it.
@ThanosReXXX I don't think purposely doing something to a game means that that thing is automatically good. For example, would it really be good game design for Call of Duty to be made into a walking simulator? It might be intentional and they might have their reasons for it, but is that really a good way to go about making a new Call of Duty game?
@ThanosReXXX Giving critical feedback or generally saying what we didn't like about the game isn't wrong. If developers received no user feedback because people didn't want to offend their delicate souls with the possibility that not everything in their games is perfectly executed, who knows what the quality of the industry would be right now?
It's their job to make games that people enjoy, and if people don't enjoy certain aspects of it, they should be allowed to voice it. If I worked on a game, I would rather hear about the things I did right and also things I could improve on than have people just give me a pat on the head and say a disingenuous "Good job!".
I'm okay with the shrine system, but I would have really enjoyed some long ones and medium ones along with the short ones, and the Divine Beasts are undoubtedly some of the worst large dungeons in the series, at least that I've experienced so far.
And please don't make all the dungeons have the same theme next time. That's incredibly unimaginative and boring.
Mario Odyssey for me. I still prefer Sunshine, but it was a fantastic game. The moon system was pretty darn disappointing for me, though. I wish it could be like how it was in Sunshine where you had actual quests to go on, not just randomly stumbling upon the collectables. There wasn't a lot of super memorable music, either. I expected more in that area. Everything else was top notch, though. Really enjoyed it. I have a feeling something like Horizon would have been my GOTY if I had played it, though, or maybe some other game.
I don't think I'll ever understand why people like BotW so much. I know it's totally subjective, but I lost a lot of interest once I realized that there was little to do in the world except kill stuff and look for shrines and Korok seeds. It's just such a shallow game for how popular it is IMO, and completely and utterly disappointing after I had such high expectations. I really only kept playing because the shrines were kind of fun and I wanted to see what the different settlements looked like and if there were any really memorable locations, and while there was some of that, there wasn't nearly enough. The dungeons in BotW are a mere shadow of the traditional dungeons, and overall I just kind of didn't find the game that fun when I wasn't in a dungeon or doing part of the story (which was pretty weak, even for a Nintendo game, let's be honest). Almost everything else was just filler and not really substantial for the most part.
Honestly, it was barely a Zelda game, and it lost like 60% of the magic of the old games for me. I still liked it, but it just doesn't go beyond "like" for me. It's fine. It's enjoyable. But I'm not gonna have much nostalgia for it at all. It's just an okay open world game that I had a good time with, and probably will never touch again. I kinda regret buying the DLC for it, too. It's basically just a chore to get through the Champion's Ballad. I've still only played like 10 or 15 minutes of it.
Keep the open world formula, but make the dungeons better. If it means getting rid of the shrines, so be it. I just want good dungeons. Breath of the Wild didn't really have that IMO. Vah Ruta was pretty good, though. But the fact that the shrines and Divine Beasts all shared the same aesthetic was so disappointing, and the dungeons themselves were mostly pretty "meh".
And please make the world actually interesting to explore. It was cool to see the different aesthetics in the various areas and the different wildlife, but that was about it. Everything else was so incredibly samey throughout the whole map. I don't know about you guys, but finding a stable or a monster camp or a shrine or a Korok seed over and over stopped being interesting after the first 20 hours or so. I have no idea what people are talking about when they say that exploring this world was enthralling. I'm happy that some people felt that way, but I almost feel like I was playing a completely different game from them. I stopped being enthralled once I realized that the world and side quests and NPCs were so copy and pasted.
And please make characters that aren't incredibly shallow (Zelda was probably the only exception to this, but even she wasn't exceptionally deep) and a good story. Breath of the Wild had neither of those.
I think the open world format can work for Zelda, but I'm not confident in Nintendo's ability to make a truly great open world game after I played Breath of the Wild. Maybe they should stick with the traditional formula if the next game is a mile wide but an inch deep like BotW.
@yuwarite Is naming and shaming really necessary? It's fine to disagree, but let's not start doing a witch hunt on people who don't really care for Nintendo or don't like the Switch. Let's all behave like the adults many of us are and not preschool bullies on the playground.
DOA. Nintendoomed. Switch won't pass 10 million sales in its lifetime. R.I.P Nintendo. Next generation we'll all be seeing Mario and Zelda on PlayStation and Xbox.
@Minch Nope, not really. I can't see Nintendo allowing most games to be on the newer Switch and not the old one. Maybe they would with a few games, since they did allow a few games to be exclusive to newer 3DS models, but I wouldn't expect a significant difference in third party support.
It'll have decent third party support, but this won't be the Nintendo console that gets huge amounts of it like some people were hoping. IMO, it'll be a first party, indie, and some AAA third party machine, which I'm fine with.
If Nintendo is going to return to having full third party support, it will take a very long time.
@Mr_Zurkon That's exactly how I feel. BoTW's world looks pretty, but it's quite dull to explore. Skyrim's world isn't quite as colorful, but there is actually interesting stuff in it.
@astrofan1993 As far as I'm aware, it's the special edition. The graphics are slightly worse than the PS4/Xbox One special editions, but they're still better than the original graphics, and it comes with all the DLC. I don't think it has mods, but I could be wrong.
@Ambermoon There are some fetch quests and "go here, kill this" quests, but those are in virtually every open world game. The majority of them are actually interesting and have a story to them.
@Anti-Matter I have no idea. I find it way more fun to watch and participate in than any other sport. I think a lot of people assume it's just two guys clobbering each other, but it's pretty much like a chess game. There's so much strategy and skill that goes into it.
The only combat sport that's comparable in popularity to football and stuff is MMA, but the rest isn't nearly as popular as it should be.
@thesilverbrick Castlevania is pretty much the only example of a video game adaptation done right. I can't really think of anything else that wasn't mediocre at best.
@UmbreonsPapa Like I said, I understand the argument that they're not a big deal. It's the people who were saying it was a good thing that the Switch might not get apps that I disagree with.

Good. Maybe Nintendo will make an actual Zelda game this time, lol.

Welcome! May we envy your beard for years to come.

Re: Nintendo Shares Gamers' Breath of the Wild #ZeldaMoments
The first 20-30 hours of the game were filled with awesome moments. After that, it kinda started getting old and extremely repetitive.
Re: Review: Yooka-Laylee (Switch eShop)
I'll stick with Mario Odyssey.
Re: Feature: It's Time to Vote for Your 2017 Nintendo Life Game of the Year Awards
Odyssey over BotW for me, any day.

DOA.
Re: Soapbox: A Super Mario Odyssey Sequel or DLC is All But Guaranteed
Forget Odyssey 2. Give us Sunshine 2, Nintendo!
Re: Guide: Breathe Easy, You Can Disable Character Voices in Xenoblade Chronicles 2
That's one of the things that repel me from JRPGs. I can't stand how the characters don't shut up or say anything meaningful, unless it's a cutscene.

I always show up late to the debates.

Wow. I thought Marina would be in her twenties and Pearl would be like 15.
Re: Review: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Switch)
Doesn't sound like it's for me. I'm just not able to enjoy JRPGs like this one.

@Melkac Probably Mario Odyssey. I can't comment on anything else because I didn't play games like Horizon or Persona 5.

Mario Odyssey. Might drop back into Skyrim too, since all this excitement about the game coming to Switch is making me nostalgic.
