Re: Here’s Why Traditional Dungeons Got Axed in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

@ThanosReXXX I don't see what I'm not getting. What I meant by "thought process" is that they're changing things with the thought process that the change is for the better. Otherwise, they wouldn't do it. Most game developers obviously don't change things just for the sake of changing them.

Either way, I do generally agree with you. I personally thought the shrines were mostly far too simple and short, but I think it's a solid foundation for dungeons in future games. I just hope they're not quite so bite-size next time, even if it means there are less of them.

@ThanosReXXX I get what you meant, I just don't think changing something about a game with a certain thought process behind it automatically makes it a good change.

Ultimately, they can make whatever Zelda game they want, but I don't think it's wrong for me to voice my opinions, or that I'm trying to belittle Nintendo or make them feel bad about their game. I just didn't like certain aspects of it.

@ThanosReXXX Giving critical feedback or generally saying what we didn't like about the game isn't wrong. If developers received no user feedback because people didn't want to offend their delicate souls with the possibility that not everything in their games is perfectly executed, who knows what the quality of the industry would be right now?

It's their job to make games that people enjoy, and if people don't enjoy certain aspects of it, they should be allowed to voice it. If I worked on a game, I would rather hear about the things I did right and also things I could improve on than have people just give me a pat on the head and say a disingenuous "Good job!".

Mario Odyssey for me. I still prefer Sunshine, but it was a fantastic game. The moon system was pretty darn disappointing for me, though. I wish it could be like how it was in Sunshine where you had actual quests to go on, not just randomly stumbling upon the collectables. There wasn't a lot of super memorable music, either. I expected more in that area. Everything else was top notch, though. Really enjoyed it. I have a feeling something like Horizon would have been my GOTY if I had played it, though, or maybe some other game.

I don't think I'll ever understand why people like BotW so much. I know it's totally subjective, but I lost a lot of interest once I realized that there was little to do in the world except kill stuff and look for shrines and Korok seeds. It's just such a shallow game for how popular it is IMO, and completely and utterly disappointing after I had such high expectations. I really only kept playing because the shrines were kind of fun and I wanted to see what the different settlements looked like and if there were any really memorable locations, and while there was some of that, there wasn't nearly enough. The dungeons in BotW are a mere shadow of the traditional dungeons, and overall I just kind of didn't find the game that fun when I wasn't in a dungeon or doing part of the story (which was pretty weak, even for a Nintendo game, let's be honest). Almost everything else was just filler and not really substantial for the most part.

Honestly, it was barely a Zelda game, and it lost like 60% of the magic of the old games for me. I still liked it, but it just doesn't go beyond "like" for me. It's fine. It's enjoyable. But I'm not gonna have much nostalgia for it at all. It's just an okay open world game that I had a good time with, and probably will never touch again. I kinda regret buying the DLC for it, too. It's basically just a chore to get through the Champion's Ballad. I've still only played like 10 or 15 minutes of it.

Keep the open world formula, but make the dungeons better. If it means getting rid of the shrines, so be it. I just want good dungeons. Breath of the Wild didn't really have that IMO. Vah Ruta was pretty good, though. But the fact that the shrines and Divine Beasts all shared the same aesthetic was so disappointing, and the dungeons themselves were mostly pretty "meh".

And please make the world actually interesting to explore. It was cool to see the different aesthetics in the various areas and the different wildlife, but that was about it. Everything else was so incredibly samey throughout the whole map. I don't know about you guys, but finding a stable or a monster camp or a shrine or a Korok seed over and over stopped being interesting after the first 20 hours or so. I have no idea what people are talking about when they say that exploring this world was enthralling. I'm happy that some people felt that way, but I almost feel like I was playing a completely different game from them. I stopped being enthralled once I realized that the world and side quests and NPCs were so copy and pasted.

And please make characters that aren't incredibly shallow (Zelda was probably the only exception to this, but even she wasn't exceptionally deep) and a good story. Breath of the Wild had neither of those.

I think the open world format can work for Zelda, but I'm not confident in Nintendo's ability to make a truly great open world game after I played Breath of the Wild. Maybe they should stick with the traditional formula if the next game is a mile wide but an inch deep like BotW.

@astrofan1993 As far as I'm aware, it's the special edition. The graphics are slightly worse than the PS4/Xbox One special editions, but they're still better than the original graphics, and it comes with all the DLC. I don't think it has mods, but I could be wrong.

@Anti-Matter I have no idea. I find it way more fun to watch and participate in than any other sport. I think a lot of people assume it's just two guys clobbering each other, but it's pretty much like a chess game. There's so much strategy and skill that goes into it.

The only combat sport that's comparable in popularity to football and stuff is MMA, but the rest isn't nearly as popular as it should be.
