@Jack_Goetz not me, I played Boktai almost exclusively at night, except when I built and ran the Azure Sky Tower. I did, however, modify a wormlight with a UV LED for infinite sunlight.
At least it keeps us in the queue and not constantly needing to check if there is more stock somewhere and then fighting everyone else at the same time. This is the way to get it. Steam Deck was the same.
It’s the “Take a number” method that all the other stores seemed to forget. Some customers just NEED it day one. Would we rather be panic-stressing about getting it day one and probably still not get it, or be fine knowing we’ll get it when it’s available? I don’t know why these stores let pre-orders sell out. It’s either make the sale or send your customers elsewhere. When a car dealership doesn’t have the one you want you can either put in the order to have the one you want sent there and just wait or go try to find one on another lot which may be impossible.
I’m biased towards the Face Training camera because I have that one. It’s a slick cartridge with a pop out camera lens if you are using it in an old DS. Back when I tested games, Nintendo had a requirement that the games shouldn’t do anything weird if a peripheral or gba cart was inserted that the game wasn’t programmed to recognize. So we ended ip buying all the weird stuff. I actually had some in my collection and just used those for testing
I worked for BNG (NBGA at the time) and we were working on an Ace Combat game, so naturally when I bough Face Training and took it to work, we dubbed it Face Combat.
@Kirbyo I don't remember if I have Minish or ALTTP for NES, but there should be videos on YouTube. Beware of your volume though, as these bootlegs usually have really awful, terrible, grating, make-you-want-to-rip-your-ears-off music. The great thing about the FFVII demake translation is that they fixed all of the terrible music with actual renditions of the FFVII music. I could only hope the Resident Evil demake would get better music. Of Aliens Vs Predator. Or any of them.
I was able to get this demake from someone in Russia who had flashed the patch to the original Chinese cart about 10 years ago. One of my never-gonna-give-you-up items. The cart is extra heavy for some reason.
I wish the translation/hacking team were able to get the enemies properly zoned so it wasn't completely randomized what you would encounter, but this whole project is a great achievement. I'd love to have an FFVII demake FFVI style, and play that on my GBA.
I don’t know, those cons sound like deliberate pros to me. But I’m already familiar with the remakes of the original cd-i zeldas, and those were great. So, if you are saying it’s those but newer, then this game sounds great to me.
@-wc- It was, actually, hahah. The PS3 era games were combined into one package called Trilogy. Funny enough, one of those games (Anniversary) is a remake of the original Tomb Raider.
I’m from San Jose, and just started going to this store in December. Great store run by very nice people and it’s sad to see this happen to them.
I haven’t been able to stop by yet since I was trying to save money, but from the video, they didn’t make off with the higher priced items.
The empty glass cases had lower priced Pokemon illustration cards, and behind it were the bulk cards. They probably grabbed some booster boxes that were on the shelf above.
We have a big gaming community over here so I’m sure there are people keeping an eye put for these things getting resold. These thieves didn’t seem to know what to take so I doubt they’ll be informed enough to know the value of any of it and might try to dump it all as bulk on marketplace or to any of the other card stores around like the guy selling the factory stollen cards to the card shop.
@boatie I'm going to wager that it will be fun. This is done by the same guy that remade Wand of Gamelon and Faces of Evil. And I have to say, even though the original games get poo-poo'd on, his remakes made the games not only playable, but actually fun to play through and they paid great respect to the original devs that also tried to make something that could be fun, with the limitations they had. So if you haven't given those a try, seek them out to get an idea of how this game will be. Not even a joke, those remakes have hyped me up for this release.
@Weezie13 well, the new assets aren’t exactly copies of the original assets, only similar in conveying the same look, because otherwise it would either just look like an HD remaster which would be terrible, or it would look like a completely different game altogether like when that one JP game got reskinned as a different game (I’m not looking up what the title is, it’s unimportant). I understand what you are saying about respecting the past work on the original iteration. What I’m saying is that it would be nice, but I can’t expect it, as with what @Silly_G said is that it would bloat those credits. And for some reason it’s hard to get those credits right. Timing, scroll chopping, music length, correctness, etc. is a mess all the time.
I haven’t watched the credits on Re Pac yet. So I can’t comment on how they played out or if there was like a special thanks to original staff or not.
My point is that at the end of the day it wasn’t a diss, it wasn’t intentional, it doesn’t change anything, most consumers don’t know who any of these people are, most people don’t even care when we tell them we’ve worked on games. It only matters to us personally on an individual level. When we work at a company, out work belongs to the company, and when we leave we are no longer part of the company.
Sorry if this seems a little scattered, but in the middle of cooking dinner.
@Silly_G I was QA Lead on the Wii version but I don’t expect to be included in the recent release, even though all the text corrections most likely came off that project. I was a tester all the way up to manager by the time I left in 2015, so I helped most products release during that time.
@Silly_G I'm with you on this. I worked on just about everything at Namco from 2006 to 2015. I don't expect my name to be on any other derivative works since then and there have been several, most recently Klonoa. Sure would be cool, but it can't be expected, and shouldn't feel offended when it doesn't happen, and shant cast shame because of it. This game was remade from the bottom up. I doubt they even have the original source (gold masters, yes, source code, no).
@Rats certain games in the series more than others, yes. I think isolation plays a big part. The obscurity of direction is another part that I think plays a part. And that’s part of the exploration part. But I don’t think all Zelda games would fit into this category.
@DeathByLasagna besting Metroid 1 is like getting over that hump in Dark Souls. Start out slow and make your moves deliberate. Be cautious. Memorize or draw out a map. Slowly build up your upgrades. And if the area you are in isn’t working out, try another location.
Also, illusionary walls and pits are a pain.
However, Phil Summers of Hand Drawn Game Guides will have a very nice guide for the game going up for order today on Kickstarter. His previous guides for Ninja Gaiden/Contra and Zelda are fantastic and will also now be made more easily obtainable on the same Kickstarter campaign.
Was jokingly going to say “the first stage”, but really it would probably be the Grand Archives in Dark Souls 3. Love running that area. Very fun and you can continually level up with massive soul gains, which feeds into constantly getting better and more refined with each run through.
But no joke: Azure Sky Tower in Boktai. To complete that, you have to play through the first 3 bosses of the game, then enter a secret dungeon. The dungeon starts with 9 random floors, and each time you complete it, 3 more floors are added. You always start from the bottom and have to work your way up. It concludes at the 99th floor… if you’ve collected all 7 emblems from the game, some from completing the whole game a couple of times, and 3 from trading with friends, if you had somebody that also played and happened to have a randomly received emblem you didn’t have. And since I soloed that task, I also replayed the opening of the game, many times until I had all I needed to trade… to myself. Some say I only had to refresh constantly, but I always seemed to get the same emblem. So I played the Hel out of not only that game (and series) but also those beginning stages and the AST itself.
Sakurai himself will be the final character. They will upload his consciousness into the game thus preventing him from being able to continue working on it. Each amiibo sold will have a drop of his blood in it.
Phil has been doing bang-up jobs on these and I’m glad I was able to at least get the physical book for the Zelda one.
For those that say he changed things too much, he’s working from original art used in Japanese and US promotional materials from when the original game was released as that was what we had to go off of when it came out. Back when we had to imagine what these things might be like in full detail we didn’t have all these updates and changes over the last 35 years. This is a guide for nostalgic purpose, not your official collectors edition artbook with the same art reprinted from the cover/manual/game card.
I’m not so well known as to gain much traction, but I’ve started replying to publishers on their social media accounts with a possible solution.
They should follow in Limited Run Games (and a few others) and implement open preorders for a limited time. That’s how preorders used to work. I don’t know why they’ve all forgotten this.
The open preorder system allows for: 1. Everybody who wants one has an opportunity to get one. 2. Scalpers not being able to get them all. 3. The scalping situation to be disrupted as the supply is able to meet the demand, their typical customer base is now diminished to only new fans far into the future.
Obviously there would need to be work done with the retail partners, or for the publisher to run their own online shop (which some already do) but this also annoys the retailers. But really, knowing how many they should be making rather than playing a guessing game and failing every time should be a no-brainer.
Is making less money and pissing off your most dedicated fanbase just to drum up hype the better solution?
I’ve posed this to Atlus, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. I haven’t gotten or expect a response. Even though I’ve worked in the industry, I’m not a known individual with clout to get the ball rolling, but I have seen the inner workings and know this is a solution every publisher can implement.
@BloodNinja hahah! That was me. P-Switch would be fun if they did it. I’m thinking the name would have to reflect the hardware or upgraded features. I think calling it the Pro, is too Sony-like and too normal for Nintendo to do.
XL reflected the size upgrade. U was to represent being more of a personal component rather than Wii being a together thing. Super and Advance were next in line systems that were better than previous. New was better in the same era. 3DS and 2DS were expansions of the DS idea.
So whatever this new Switch is going to feature, it will reflect in the name. Bigger - XL. Higher Def - HD. Improved - New. More power? P-Switch.
