Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 2nd)

Gryffin

I'm all in on Pandora's Tower. Phenomenal game. Before the Wii U eShop stopped accepting credit cards, I spent way too much time researching "hidden gems". Pandora's Tower was on many of the lists, and I cannot think of more emblematic example of a hidden gem than this game. It's incredible in every way. I am completely obsessed with following games. I spend way more time reading about games and watching trailers and gameplay than I do playing them. The fact that I had not heard of this game is astounding.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The Summer Game Fest 2022 Opening Showcase?

Gryffin

Pretty dang *****. They front loaded the presentation with sci-fi shooters, one after another. They all look equally bland and I couldn't tell you the name of a single one. Big production studios are terrified taking any risks at all, so they green light the most generic mass appeal products they can find a studio to waste three years of their life developing.

Re: Soapbox: Leaving The Comfort Zone - A Quest To Find My New Favourite Games

"...a bad habit of going back and playing the same core group of favourites repeatedly."

I'm completely the opposite. I've replayed maybe three games ever because they're literally my favorite games. I own hundreds of games, most of which I've never played. I will never play many of them because there isn't time. In fact, I have a very hard time finishing games. I'm probably in the middle of 10 games that I really like, or even love, but I have commitment issues I guess. I've been playing SteamWorld Dig 2 on my 2DS this week. Brilliant game, but I can already feel myself drifting away. Once I've put about six hours into a game, I often move on, particularly when I feel I've seen most of what the game has to offer. These days, when I'm considering what game to play next, I look up the average time to beat. Ideally, it's under 6 hours. Under 10 is fine. But after that, I need to be very interested to start it. I wish games were shorter.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Warriors Game On Switch?

I played the demo for Samurai Warriors 5 on PS4. Surprisingly, I thought it was horrible. There was no impact. It was like slicing through butter. Then I played Hyrule Warriors on Switch, and I liked it much much better. It has actual impact.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Star Fox Game?

Assault is excellent. So underrated. I'm actually playing Adventures RIGHT NOW! I've owned the disc forever, but it would always freeze. I recently got an HD TV with s-video inputs, so I plugged in my GCN obviously. I figured I'd try running Star Fox Adventures again, and dagnabit it's worked perfectly. I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Society mislead me to believe it was bad. I blame them.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Ever A Good Idea To Start At 'The Beginning' Of Series Like Zelda Or Dragon Quest?

Gryffin

This is a great topic, and I've thought about it a lot as well. To start the Yakuza series, I chose to begin with 0, not because it's the first chronologically, but it's supposedly the best. For Zelda, I would absolutely recommend WW as the first game. Ocarina and LTTP are fine choices too. For Metal Gear, I would have to recommend the first Solid. Twin Snakes if possible. Because the story is absolutely critical to enjoying those games and it's fun to see the gameplay evolution. Final Fantasy VII, though VI and X are good choices too. I'd recommend starting with Super Metroid for a few reasons, one being that it is actually the best game, but also that it is somewhat dated, and I think you'd enjoy Zero Mission, Fusion, and the others having started with Super.
