Re: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Stays on the Podium in UK Charts

Grandpa_Pixel

@LiberatedAnimal Unfortunately this is true. It is a sorry state of affairs where cool games are promoted by violence, sex and whatnot.

When I have kids, they will be taught what really defines a cool game. As well as being taught the history of Nintendo's great consoles

Re: Nintendo Outlines Pricing and Details for DLC in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

Grandpa_Pixel

Honestly I am okay with this. It gives me more of what I love. Sure it is pricey but that is my choice and I say more Fire Emblem please

EDIT: Also, can I point out that this is a complete game to begin with? And that it is a NES game which were usually short. Given that, I could easily see Nintendo bulking up the complete game and the DLC to make it feel like the biggest Fire Emblem yet

Re: Talking Point: One Month of Nintendo Switch - Early Momentum Brings Optimism

Grandpa_Pixel

@datamonkey You'd be surprised how many gamers I know who say it is a developer's fault. Kind sad

I have noticed this as well and I think it might just be us gamers getting older. Though I will admit this year Nintendo is treating us very well. Adventure, RPGs, Racing, Platformers. Pretty much all the main genres are being supported this year by them

I was aware of that when I said that. I do Software/Games Development as a career (something I really enjoy). And you would be surprised. Everything gets reassessed with ports even the resources. Remember Twilight Princess? That whole map got inverted, the controls were different. All these things add up when jumping from one style to another. Games like Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Wonderful 101 would need a design overhaul to be ported to the Switch. New Super Marios Bros would be fine though.

And of course Mario Kart 8 was. It was the Wii U's biggest hit. I wonder....

Re: Talking Point: One Month of Nintendo Switch - Early Momentum Brings Optimism

Grandpa_Pixel

@datamonkey Surprisingly Nintendo has been consistent (until Wii U's last years) with their number of first party games per platform per year. Looking at the facts, they typically release 5-8 titles a year for a platform and so far they have already gone well into that.

And as for you that isn't Nintendo's fault. They have offered you great hits and you have turned them down out of choice. They can't cater to everyone with every hit. So part of being any sort of gamer is to be patient. No different than waiting for the next Marvel or Disney movie.

Finally, time to speak up about this so "cheap and quick" method of beefing up the schedule everyone states. It is 100% not true. Ports are quite difficult and in some cases costly to develop. Just because it is a Nintendo title it does not mean it can easily be ported. The programming language and environment between the console can be really complex. It is essentially translating a book from english to german word for word.

In some cases it is easy to port. In some it is hard. This is why porting takes longer than you hope. This and normal development is the truth to why we need third party support. It fills the development gaps

Re: PETA Calls Out Nintendo Over Inaccurate Portrayal Of Milking In 1-2-Switch

Grandpa_Pixel

All I can do is laugh. This is just sad. I have read the email and it all says to me is "look at me, I need attention."

Now thinking back, their claims contradict themselves. Here they are complaining Nintendo are not stating the truth. But then they hated Assassin's Creed for being honest about the truth with hunting animals.

To me, that is very hypocritical and shows just how pathetic they are that they could not even get a consistency of what they want. They are little more than a bunch of divas who need their 5 minutes in the spotlight

Re: Nintendo Switch Back In Stock In The UK

Grandpa_Pixel

@NintyNate Google "Streetpass South Wales". I think you might be surprised. They have a group there as well (North Wales has a group too)

But seriously, there are Nintendo gaming groups out there and most have monthly meets. Worth it just to make new friends and play Nintendo games with other fans

Re: Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Studio Factor 5 Is Apparently Back From The Dead

Grandpa_Pixel

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Can I be honest? That is honestly where the future will lie. Sooner or later, all this "not as powerful as Xbox" nonsense will be out the window the moment the human being can no longer spot the difference between resolutions, frames per second, processing power etc. They will need to look for another hook.

It has already happened with mobile phones. They started stationary then became mobile yet bulky and over time thinner and thinner.

And I see the future of gaming being exactly what Nintendo are looking to achieve. A portable/home console hybrid. You may not like it but that is the future and has been for a long time.

Computers -> Laptops
Phones -> Smartphones
NES -> Game Boy
Wii U -> Switch
PS2 -> PSP

That is just how technology works. We work to make it convenient.

@PtM Not sure if sarcastic or not but oh well. This isn't the first time Nintendo has made a handheld with home console tendencies. Game Boy could be played via a Super Game Boy player. Game Boy Advance had the Game Boy Player for the Gamecube. Sure they are different in execution but the mindset is the same. They remain a handheld despite their home console compatibility

@RedMageLanakyn It's PR. They need a hook to draw people in. It's called a Unique Selling Point in business terms. If they did not have this USP then they would be calling it a handheld already. That's just how business works. They sell the marketing and the sales will come

Now for the record, I love my Switch so much. I took it for a spin in Liverpool and it is already changing my life. But I honestly do not see it as a hybrid or a home console. I just see it as a handheld with a TV streaming feature. Would I be happier with a more powerful home console that was portable? Sure. But that is impracticable. Technological advances will cause home consoles to cease to exist anyway in time. So instead, I just want a portable with the power of a home console we see today. And that is what the Switch does. And you know what, that is good enough for me to warrant its purchase.

And I couldn't be happier! Roll on April for Mario Kart!

@cfgk24 StreetpassBasingstoke. Look it up on Facebook. We have an event on March 25th where we are doing a 1-2-Switch tournament. I plan on making a Breath of the Wild cake for our next meet too. I do cake sculpting now because of my group

@Mogster I disagree. It is clear from the Wii U period that sales falling does not stop Nintendo's franchises breathing. Remember before the Wii Nintendo got where they did due to their fans. Sure you have the casual gamers buying the software/hardware but back then most of the people buying a Nintendo consoles were hardcore gamers.

By the time I bought a Gamecube I was a hardcore gamer coming off the N64. We are a newcomer for one console and then boom next generation we've gone hardcore. As a result, I bought a lot more games as a result including Melee.

So in reality, the thing that matters is us the hardcore fans and the newcomers. That's where the sales success comes from. The attachment rate between the Wii and its main franchises was telling enough when the highest attachment rate (minus Wii Sports) was Mario Kart with 30+% compared to Wii U's 70%+ and Switch's current 80+% for Zelda

And we find out how well Nintendo is doing through its fans. From the recognition of the platform. From the hardcores being hyped for the next game.

Nintendo consoles and games never sell bucket loads. They sell for as many hardcore/newcomer gamers there are on the platform.

Re: Nintendo Switch Back In Stock In The UK

Grandpa_Pixel

@NintyNate Glad you mentioned that. I was at Liverpool Comic Con this weekend playing my Switch during the event and a strong number of people recognized the Switch and were asking about it. I evenr had a few of the special guests get excited about seeing one. Then on my way back I popped into Birmingham and people recognized it as I browsed the High Street

And here in Basingstoke, I run a gaming group and to my knowledge we are the biggest one in Basingstoke despite being a Nintendo-only group.

With that, I think it's fair to say people are so big on Ninty here in the UK but it just so happens PS and Xbox are bigger over here than most countries.

Honestly I think this whole "UK hates Nintendo" is a load of rubbish given all that I have experienced.

Re: Zelda: Breath of the Wild Makes UK Debut in Second, Three Top 10 Switch Titles in Total

Grandpa_Pixel

@SLIGEACH_EIRE It was never going to be a good start. Nintendo has a lot of making up to do. But starting it's lifespan off with a critically acclaimed game is going to be a great start.

Also, 80,000 is the rough benchmark for a a Nintendo console launch so it's great in Nintendo terms.

@SBandy - Of course not but I'd say a good chunk of them do. All the PS4 players in my work place have bought the game.

Re: Review: 1-2-Switch (Switch)

Grandpa_Pixel

@AlexOlney Got to agree with Alex. While you should not base a review entirely on its price for quality, it does come into question and even unintentionally causes a biased review. Like how you can eat a bag of chips and go "I suppose it was ok. Wasn't worth £2.00 mind you"

Re: Review: 1-2-Switch (Switch)

Grandpa_Pixel

To be honest we all knew this game would pale compared to Zelda. But more importantly, if you are a person who could see this being used at social meets, go and buy the game. If you on the other hand can't see it being worth your time then don't. It is really meant for non-gamers and those who like a quick laugh. It was never meant to be the next big hit.

Re: Video: Here's Your First Look At The Nintendo Switch eShop

Grandpa_Pixel

@SLIGEACH_EIRE That assumes games that came on the 3DS and Wii U will be on the Switch as well. Virtual Console games I really hope they do. But stuff like BoxBoy or Tokyo Mirage Sessions cost money to port over.

Also you have to remember they both use a stylus touchscreen. It is massively different to a smartphone touchscreen approach.

Games Development isn't about throwing games onto many platforms on a whim. They take redesigns, planning and thorough development and testing. It's something I wish a lot of gamers read up on more.
