Square Enix has announced that it is bringing Seiken Densetsu Collection to the Nintendo Switch this June.
The collection was teased yesterday when the official Twitter account for the RPG series posted a short clip showing Seiken Densetsu 3 running on Nintendo's new console.
The pack includes:
- Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden (AKA: Final Fantasy Adventure / Mystic Quest) – Game Boy
- Seiken Densetsu 2 (AKA: Secret of Mana) – SNES / Super Famicom
- Seiken Densetsu 3 – Super Famicom
Seiken Densetsu 2 and Seiken Densetsu 3 both support multiplayer with up to three players, a feature which was present in the original Super Famicom / SNES versions. All of the games support save states, and you can listen to the soundtracks via the new music mode. There's also a "Screen Change Mode" for the first Seiken Densetsu which allows you to choose from several different screen sizes.
Seiken Densetsu Collection arrives in Japan on June 1st and will cost 4,800 Yen. You can visit the official Japanese site here. There's no news on a western release.
Thanks to Ernest_The_Crab for the tip!

Please localize! Need this in my life.
I'M LOSING IT!
<composure>This is wonderful news to start my day with. Secret of Mana is one of my favorite games. If this doesn't get localized, I'm learning Japanese.</composure>
I've heard such great things about Secret of Mana, so if this comes to the west, I might try it for the first time.
Come on Square/Nintendo... you have to know people in English/European language speaking company would go NUTS for this release. If you want to get every single Switch sale you can, why not cater to the classic RPG crowd. You know, those grown ups you've been showing in your adverts?
I really really need this localized. I need it so badly.
Loved Secret of Mana. I'd definitely play that again.
I never complain about prices but this is way to high. 2 snes games and a game boy game for 42 bucks is pretty steep imop
That's cool, I'm not a big fan of the series, but I would certainly consider getting this if it got an international release. If only for Seiken Densetsu 3.
would buy and play if localized
Can't see why they wouldn't bring this to the west. Easy cash-in while there isn't much like this on switch,makes sense really. Plus they have recently brought the first game to the west on psvita even though it was a remake
That'd be nice to finally see a western release for SoM3, hopefully they work on that.
If this isn't going to be localized, im going to riot !
Seriously?! This is just fantastic news!
PLEASE BRING OUT PHYSICAL VERSION IN EUROPE
I can't see them localising this for the West. The main reason why this is being released at all is because the content is already complete and good to go. I can't see a large enough number of users coughing up full price for a localised collection for ports of an original Game Boy and two SNES games.
I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. I'm a huge sucker for classic Game Boy games and I would dip into this collection for that alone, but I can't see this reaching the West. And bear in mind that this collection (repeat, of a GB and two SNES games) costs 4,800 yen (US$43; AU$55), and that is without the added expense of localisation.
Hell yeah, now this better came to the west or else. Make it happen Square Enix. Also would had been nice if Sword of Mana or Adventure of Mana is included in the collection as well. I know they're just remakes but they do add some sense of value to the collection.
Huh that asking price is a bit much if its not on cartridge... 4,600 yen is quite a lot conversion wise.
I played through most of the first game emulated, fell short of completing it after ending up with a final dungeon save that had more doors than keys (and no way to backtrack at that point). For that reason, I've been considering a second run for years although I'm still leaning towards Sword of Mana remake which allowed to choose characters. But I've never played the other two properly and they're featuring the local multiplayer, too - buying all three as a collection now feels like a no-brainer. Here's to the imminent localisation announcement!
Hope this comes to the west. Day one for sure
YES. I actually played secret of mana on the iPhone, and from therrr looked into the series. It looks like a series I would enjoy. Hopefully this is a western release.
Square hates localizing, so we'll probably never see it
What about Legend of Mana and Dawn of Mana / Seiken Densetsu 4? I hate these half finished "collections"....
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is a different game (an SNES RPG from the makers of the SaGa series and Final Fantasy Legends).
I agree--they haven't localized Seiken Densetsu 3 yet, so the chances of a Western release of this are nil.
that looks great but as expected this looks like a Japanese only release. seems unlikely it will be localized as the 2nd one never was. real shame
Awesome news! But to be honest, I don't think Seiken Densetsu 3 was "officially" 3-player co-op when it was released in Japan. There's a patch available online (as well as a great English patch translation (hint-hint) that made 3-player co-op possible but I don't think this was a feature when it was first released.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this makes it to the west translated. All I need now is River City Ransom Underground to get ported to Switch and that'll make my year!
Let's hope its localized - I've never played Secret of Mana and this would be an excellent chance to fix that!
Western release and Secret of Evermore please
Pleasepleaseplease localize this.
Slim chance of NoA doing anything like this for their consumers. Their heads are so far up their asses it's sickening. Something like this could move systems. Right now if you're a jrpg fan, you buy a PS4 (or even a PS3). You don't look to Nintendo systems... which is crazy considering the heavy hitters that were on Nintendo hardware.
Not only would these games move systems, it also would signal that Nintendo is committed to making fans happy and actually listening, making the virtual console a serious threat on the Switch and committing to supporting it across all genres and that they've embraced niche genres that weren't well represented in the last couple of generations of Nintendo hardware.
I've done Mystic Quest at the time, but never the Snes games. I'd love to do them both if the price drops a little, as it's a little bit of a joke right now.
@carlos82 It's indeed amazing that they left out Secret of Evermore.
Those games are good. I could not get into the 3rd one though, maybe cuz it was a rom, that FF adventure is way good. I have the remake for Vita. I have the other on Wii mode. I would not get this because I own them all, but if you don't have them, I strongly recommend.
I will buy a switch for this
The cost of a full localization of SD3 would be less than 100 copies.
Does anyone know how to start one of those petition thingys?
Multiplayer RPG? Well you certainly have my attention...
Localization? Or are we talking japan eshop only?
Temper your excitement just yet. If it comes to Europe and the West then happy days. The 3rd game never came out here.
Just bought (again) Secret of Mana for SNES. So great. I also bought SD3 for SFC but that language barrier..... So this would be AWESOME.
Interesting we're seeing collections and upgrades instead of e-shop. Either way. all retro revivals are good and if it's a chance for first-time localization.... I WOULD BUY A SWITCH FOR THAT.
That's right. SNES games I never got would be system sellers for me. Would actually prefer they sell localized SNES carts... that's gotta be cheap right? throw in as a cross-buy collector's item or something?
Great news and while I hope it get localized since we don't have to worry about region lock we can buy it anyway.
Spectacular games, glad to see them available again.
@Tibob
Let me hear your math on that.
I think you're forgetting storefront and Nintendo royalties, along with distribution/production cost, just what income is concerned, as well as testing and editor involvement what localization costs are concerned.
So uh, is that supposed to be a Game Boy Light palette??
@Tibob
Especially if NOA just pays for the existing fan translation available on the web.
@ieatdragonz it is on cartridge. Still overpriced.
@Turbo857 eh? First of all NOA has nothing to do with this. Secondly they have never used a fan translation (and never will)
@SLIGEACH_EIRE with all the price complaining you do one would think you would complain about a truly unjust price like this one.
Day 1 if it comes West
Now this is a verry nice surprise.already dreaming about other collections. Final fantasy, Dragon quest, star ocean,....oh how great this clould be.
Fingers crossed for a Western release. I just don't see Square translating SD3, so perhaps they will drop that game from the Western collection. Maybe tack on Secret of Evermore? haha
@Tibob I imagine Evermore probably didn't come out over there but this means they could just swap it for number 3 for us
@itslukec literally just said this 😃 I'd definitely buy it
Secret of Mana on the SNES was amazing. I love the music in that game.
Seriously hope this gets a localised release for Nintendo Switch with the multiplayer intact. I was going to get the SNES Secret of Mana off the Wii U Virtual Console but if this collection does come West, that would be awesome! I know I could just get it with a Japanese user account but I don't read/understand Japanese all that great...I know very little, LOL. So getting English (or Quebec French) would be very helpful!
Going to have to learn Japanese now... I'll be in Tokyo on the 1st of June, might see if there's any events
Correct me if I'm wrong, but iirc SD3 did NOT have 3 player multiplayer back in the day? Only 2 player. It was only patched in by the rom modders to have 3 player I think.
Ah man, I saw this and got excited and then realised that it's (obviously) just for Japan and the chances of a Western release any time soon are fairly slim. Damn it.
@carlos82 I wasn't aware that Secret of Evermore was never released in japan.
So Square's got a 20 year old game unreleased in japan, and another one unreleased in USA/EU, and somehow the manage to release a "collection" and still be sitting on it ?
@sillygostly You'd be surprised. People would pay for it just to support SE. And if it does well, then more localizations could result like say, the Final Fantasy Legend 2 & 3 DS remakes that are exclusive to Japan being ported and refined for either the 3DS or Switch.
@Tibob Secret Of Evermore was developed entirely by Squaresoft of America, so that's part of it.
Localization or not, I can't wait June 1st!
@Menchi187 I believe yourr correct, I think the game was too big to have 3 player working... I believe HyperPlay magazine had a bit about it.
Which leads to the question, online multiplayer? Drop in/out mode!! Yee gods!!
Ugh I hope this gets localized, I would buy in a heartbeat
How about a new Mana game with in-game graphics that look like this crazy-good box art?
Well, it's got multiplayer for SD3 so I'm in for an import if it doesn't get localized.
Disappointing to see they're just ports and not enhanced remakes. FFA is a great top-down Zelda clone, but quite wonky with hitboxes and stuff. The SNES titles are pretty much unplayable to me with the delayed hit detection (I know it's intentional, intentional lag is not appealing to me).
Secret of Mana was originally a SNES-CD game, before that add-on was scrapped. When the game was moved to the cartridge format, a lot of content was cut. It really shows; the game feels hollow as a result. That's a shame, because many aspects of the game are fantastic.
Another day one purchase if it's localized, or at least have English subs.
@Manjushri I wasn't talking about handheld. Not everyone wants to play on a tiny screen for hours to get their rpg fix. I referenced home systems and that is the comparison I was making; not small screens. So not even close to an exaggeration. If anything, I didn't come down hard enough on Nintendo for not getting iterations of these IPs on their home consoles or courting the big rpg developers more... vigorously.
@sillygostly
A digital release for $20 would be neato.
I would love to see this come to the US, especially since it looks like it's a physical release. That said, giving Square Enix history, probably not gonna happen.
@faint Yeah... I guess for a physical release it's not terrible, but $30 or even $35 would be more reasonable.
@carlos82 Great minds think alike haha. Day one purchase for me, with or without Evermore.
Will be importing.
@Turbo857
I bet they would donate it.
I wish companies would get on board with that. I mean, the fans just want the game, have them sign over rights, keep the price lower than paying for localization and we get an OFFICIAL release! Even tweak the translation if you want.
That's my dream. They could probably print SNES carts for like $1, put in a free fan translation (with permission) and localize games to their original systems. Almost pure profit. I would pay $20-30 for those.
I hope this comes to the west but if not, at least it will give me a reason to work on learning Japanese again.
Localize this.
Does the title after secret of mana have multiplayer?
But what about a Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma collection? :-/
@Roam85 The NL article is wrong. Originally it only had 2 player on the SFC but this version (and the modded translated roms) have 3 player support.
Oh Squenix i really hope for you that your fans children inherite their parents nostalgia. At the time i really loved the second entry. Still nice game. Many years later i tried the third with a fan tranlation and although i think its by a good lengh the better entry i didnt really have fun.
So this series is just nostalgia for me. Nostalgia doesnt quite work with me. Prefer listening to the music of games i loved. Great tunes.
No Dawn of Mana on this one.
Confirmation Seiken Densetsu stopped after 3.
(I only played Dawn for like 10 minutes, so I don't know, maybe it was a pretty good action game. But it was not an RPG, so that was enough.)
Well, just localize the ones that have translations and release on VC service. I'd be OK with that
@speedracer216 Put yourself in the company's shoes. You have this fan translation offered to you. Do you just put it on a cart and ship it, without looking?
Of course not - you're not going to put your name on the line for a manuscript you know nothing about. You're still going to have to extract and comb through every line to make sure no f-bombs snuck in. You're still going to have to cross-check every item and story point to the original Japanese to make sure the translation's accurate. You're still going to have to put it through your own testing to make sure there aren't any textbox overflows or weird corner-case crashes.
You can see where this is going: if it's nearly as much work to validate a translation as it would be to make your own, you might as well take full control.
Great news for those with an interest in the game, especially if it gets translated and "Western" release. But this hardly seems like the kind of gaming title which will capture the imagination of the mainstream and shift the Switch. Just exactly where are they? And when are they inbound?
@faint I hadn't paid attention to the price, I seen the 4,800 Yen but now that you mention it, it is a bit of a rip-off.
@Fath
True, I wouldn't do it the lazy way. Still seems it would be faster (1 or 2 people take a week?) to do what you described than to have a team take several months. I could be wrong of course, and you make a good point!
4800 yen for 3 old games? Have they lost their marbles?
I need this! Please bring it to the West. Never got to play Secret of Mana and I would love to play this.
I will play a remastered game if it was really special to me. I'm just wondering who has time to replay all these old games? For those who never played, it might be good. I don't have time to get through all the new games I want to play.
This has got 'Japanese Only' written all over it. BUT PLEASE LOCALISE IT! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!
Square Enix providing this much support early on makes me really excited for the future. With KH3 running on UE4 and a Final Fantasy VII remake in development, these early Squeenix titles might be their way of judging a user base for bigger games. Switch ports or even new games would be incredible. A new Super Mario RPG perhaps? Or even a new Nintendo KH game?
Oh baby, please let everyone get this!
Hmm... funny thing. There are only a couple games I really enjoyed on the original Game Boy and Final Fantasy Adventure was one of them.
Secret of Mana was great and with Switch and my family I'd get three player gaming through the whole thing.
Problem is the 3rd one might ruin everything because it has never been localized... which means a longer wait or worse it never releases outside Japan. sigh.
I hope it comes over. It lines right up with the local multiplayer advantages of Switch. (Y'all know those right? Two players out of the box, play anywhere, strong launch game to kickstart it: SnipperClips, and huge games on the way: MK8D and Splatoon 2)
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Same here. I didn't pay attention to the price at first, I was lost in the cover art, lol. But, now that I think about it, I would also say that it is a bit much. Hopefully, for the US release, they add some extra incentives or lower the price.
Why is this a collection and not VC?
Is the VC even coming to the Switch at all?
RIP VC on the Switch ?
Time for me to learn Japanese.
MAN They seriously need this to launch globally at the same time. I want this bad i've always wanted to play the real secret of mana sequel on a nintendo system i've avoid playing it on an emulator in hopes it would come at some point.
Also if you get 3 good games for around 40 bucks that doesn't seem like a bad deal to me for those saying it's too high.
Stateside Square please!!!! In English!! Thx
@faint
Not really, considering that IF this is localized, Seiken Densetsu 3 will need to be translated first and was NEVER released in the US. An english localized copy of SD3 alone would make this more than worth the asking price, as this game has never been available outside the US. It's far from an "unjust" price just to have SD3 in officially localized form, which fans have wanted for years even though it has an unofficial translation patch. Not to mention copies of Secret of Mana run about 60 dollars alone. EDIT: Oh, not to mention, Secret of Mana and SD3 on the go? Who WOULDN'T want that? Hardcore Mana fans will pay that gladly, and this is a series that's every bit deserving of a high price tag. Instead of worrying about the price, worry about it coming out first.
Fun Fact: Seiken Densetsu 3 actually had a mostly ready-to-go 3 player mode implemented in the game's code. By replacing values at just two specific bytes, you can get it going on your SNES. (and a multitap, of course)
I say "mostly" ready-to-go, because there are a few, easy to miss game-breaking glitches that you could potentially run into with three human players, which is probably why they just patched it out for the Super Famicom release.
I have a funny feeling all of a sudden, we'll get a collection without Seiken Densetsu 3 and have Secret of Evermore instead...
But an all four collection, region localized. is a missed trick.
I'll wait and see, if its a physical release in Japan, they might still put the english ROMS on it for 1 and 2.
(I am Setsuna has the english text in the switch JPN physical).
Even if not, they all have very simple stories you can read online. The multiplayer gameplay will still be fun, even if its japanese. All the important menus are ring menus with icons. So I might just get the JPN release.
It is INCREDIBLY DOUBTFUL either SD3 or Secret of Evermore will get released on the switch. At least not by July, we'd be hearing trademark and ESRB ratings for both. The other two already have that in the US due to the phone and VC releases over the years.
Bah who needs a collection for Switch.
#retro4life baby!!!
If we're not getting the likes of FF15 or the FFVII remake, then at the very least they can do is bring this collection over.
Nintendo would encourage it, the more games/long RPGs/BOTW type games to fill the void the better. XD
@faint
I think I paid $50 for Secret of Mana.
Damn. Hope this gets localized.
If not, thank region free!
Still, would want to play the first 2 on English, despite knowing already where to go.
(inb4 we get secret of evermore instead of SD3 [At least if they do, make it 2 player...])
Ok I saw the video and the price is crazy. It should be $30 at the higher end but it would be sweat at $20.
@manu0
Good catch. Correction: Totally up to Square to localize by "borrowing" then "paraphrasing" existing fan translations already available.
What, no Secret of Evermore?
@Tasuki whats that bottom one claiming to be SoM2?
@Tasuki Of course, none of those three are in DS3/SoM2.
@cleveland124 as a digital download?
@Onion well don't let me catch you complaining about vc prices.
@faint
I don't think I ever have? I own the games physically and can actually attest to the fact that it costs less to buy almost any given VC game versus buying the cart. So... yeah.
I thought it went. Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3. What is this gameboy thing in the pack.
Secret of Evermore I feel like is the real first one, or it at least had the same game engine/design.
I'm going to remain optimistic about this. Square localized Adventures of Mana (the FFA remake) on mobile and the Vita so I don't see why they wouldn't localize this.
That said, a higher price wouldn't surprise me. Square is one of those developers that charges a premium for nostalgia.
@SneakyStyle
The gameboy game is Final Fantasy Adventure, which is actually the first Mana game but they changed to Final Fantasy Adventure later. The same game has a GBA remake called Sword of Mana.
Secret of Mana 2 or Update of the first one please
@Onion Interesting thanks for the heads up. I'll have to look into it i'm shocked that I didn't find out earlier lol.
Secret of Mana was so huge for me and my brothers in childhood. I'd really like to play it again.
I don't import, but I love Secret of Mana. If this collection gets a North American release it's a day one buy for sure.
@Onion actually most vc games cost more.
What, no Secret of Evermore?
Was never released in Japan, so no. IF the pack was released outside of Japan, we would probably get Secret of Evermore replacing Seiken Densetsu 3.
English translation and I buy a switch
@faint And that's still cheaper and a better deal than the new Bomberman game.
@eltomo It's a repro cart of Seiken Densetsu 3 for NA SNES.
@PlywoodStick I know but I think the reason they put those 3 on the label is so people who didn't know can see its the sequel to SoM.
This will be amazing, but it will never be localized to Europe or Americas.
I wonder will this be the "virtual console" future of Switch, just getting bundles of old games in packs.
Seiken Densetsu 3 was really excellent, one of the best jprgs ever made back in the day. I played one of the fan translations with ZSNES back in the day.
@DanteSolablood its already fan translated, just purchase the rights to their work its that simple.
Squaresoft back then and their name-giving. Secret of Mana 1 I have on Game Boy and it's called Mystic Quest (and it's actually one of the best games - it's in my Game Boy Top 3 next to Link's Awakening and Donkey Kong). I always found it dumb that its US title was Final Fantasy Adventure.
Secret of Mana on the SNES was a multiplayer RPG adventure masterpiece and megaseller back then.
Secret of Mana 3 was Japanese only unfortunately, and the one with most RPG elements and deepest story. Here's hope it finally gets a translation. Would get that SWITCH cartridge in an instant.
Secret of Evermore is not a substitute for Seiken Densetsu 3. I never liked it. It is not part of the series, and apparently Heroes of Mana, Sword of Mana, Children of Mana, Adventures of Mana, Etc. of Mana are not part of the series either.
Anyway, it has the 3 best Mana games on the cartridge and it would be awesome if they get localized.
They must translate SD3 to English! It would also be nice if they colorize SD for GameBoy!
Really hope this gets released in the west. Never played FF Adventure but I love Sword of Mana so I've always wanted to see the game it was based on. But hey, at least we can still download it from Japan and kind of struggle through with an English walkthrough to guide us...
they have to release a translation patch for it at some point......right?
@faint
No they don't. Go look up a bunch of games on ebay and amazon. I collect them, I actually buy them, so I know the prices. In this case, SoM alone runs for 50 dollars. You can get it on VC for about 8. How exactly is that "more"? Or are you just bad at math?
Even some of the more common SNES games can run about 20 dollars depending on the condition. They're 8 dollars on VC. You're seriously not going to find that many SNES games for less than 8 dollars without going to a flea market. The premium is usually about 10 dollars. but in the case of games like Mega Man 7 and Mega Man X3, they can easily go up to over a hundred dollars. You can get both on VC for 8 a piece. So don't even try that. VC prices in comparison to the price of PHSYICAL CARTRIDGES is very reasonable. I've been saying this for years, so this is not something new. Oh and don't use Mario World as an example, please. That game came with every system and is so common and cheap, people give it away for free.
Getting 3 hard to come by, rare games on a single card (one of which was never released in the US. Period) is a friggin' steal, and anyone who can't see that was obviously never a Mana fan and is just basing that off their ignorant, entitled ideas of what a SNES game SHOULD cost. You probably think they should be free.
@eltomo I started to learn the hiragana chart because I bought a few Gameboy and Gameboy color shiren the wanderer titles, and metal gear gaiden for a really good price from a lot ebay aution (shenen go train simulatore by tatio, shiren the wander 2 gbc, and metal gear gaiden all for 16 USD). I fell off the boat but now I NEED to get back onboard the learning Japanese. Hope in 6 months I get some results. At least I know a friend that lived in Japan until like grade 6 so he could help my studies. I'll make him desserts as thanks. LOL
@BionicDodo Just need to spend a year learning Japanese. At least it's not region locked. Should have minimum kanji for a super famicom title.
That's what I'm doing right now. Have a few other GB, GBC titles shiren the wandered in Japanese, and spare 2032 batteries if the batteries die in the cartridges. A simple sodded job. Have the correct 3 prong screw bit and also metal gear gaiden GBC. This is the push to get back on the lean Japanese train. Getting past memorizing the hiragana chart then the katakana chart after will be a decent hurdle (tons of writing down the same stuff to stick in my head).
Hey guys, not sure if you're allowed to post links here, so just wanted to let you know I started a petition on iPetition to have this localized. If you want express your desire for this game to be localized, head over and sign/share! Thanks!
