Cool I had no idea what a metaphor was, thank you for that.
Ironically, it seems you aren't the best at creating one because you are still misusing it. Konami never misrepresented the game or "hid" anything from customers. We got exactly what we were told the game is; I fail to see how or when that didn't happen.
The trailer (which I recently rewatched) is exactly how the game is, and shows exactly what you will be doing and is exactly how it looks and sounds. I can tell right away what the game is based on the trailer, the transitions were not so fast that you can't interpret gameplay. What part of that was a catfish scam exactly (which is what your metaphor seems to illustrate)?
Also, you are so caught up on this trailer like someone forced you to base your entire purchasing decision on it. They released a demo before the game even came out and that was exactly the game we ended up getting. If you failed to try it before buying then it is on you, Konami was as transparent as possible with what the game was before releasing it.
If you need very large proclamations on a game trailer that "THIS IS NOT THE SAME GAME AS PREVIOUS ONES", "IT IS TRYING SOMETHING NEW" then that seems a bit absurd since most people can discern changes to gameplay, graphics, style etc. simply by observing those things.
How could you be so "fooled" by them and think you are ordering a burger and Sprite but get a chicken sandwich and Coke?
A better example would be if Konami advertised a burger and then when you went to eat it, it was seasoned with sugar instead of salt and the red sauce was jam instead of ketchup. Even though that particular analogy doesn't quite fit because I still think the trailer represents the game just fine (of course, if you played the demo, you would have known what it tasted like 100%).
Word of advice: try demos if you get this hung up on a game trying something new.
@Paraka I get what you are saying but I personally did not experience that with the game. I knew exactly what I was getting when I bought it based on the trailers and screenshots. I think you are being a little too blinded by the name Contra and made your own pre-conceived notions on what "Contra" should be which is always a bad thing to do and probably why you were so disappointed since it didn't match what you had in your mind. Which isn't fair because there is no rule that a game needs to be exactly the same every iteration.
Your examples/metaphors are also very extreme and kinda fall into the entitled category of game players wanting games to be THEIR way not what the developers or creators want. See also Metroid Prime Federation Force as an example of unfair negativity to a perfectly fine and great game that basically is only "bad" to people because it isn't what they stubbornly picture Metroid to be in their mind.
Your actual critiques on the quality and execution of the game is fair and I believe to be warranted in some areas, but to compare Rogue Corps as a chicken sandwich to Contra Super C as a burger is just plain wrong. I never got the impression or feeling that the game was anything but what it ended up being. If you don't like that game that is one thing, but they never promoted Rogue Corps as being something it isn't. It was just fans wanting the same old Contra and then not getting it and ultimately calling the game trash as a result.
EDIT: I just wanted to really push home that I got a great deal of "Contra" flavor while playing the game. So much so I have a hard time seeing where it ISN'T Contra-like. The biggest problem to me was the weird sound direction that would sometimes not even play music during a battle and the general underuse of classic Contra tracks / sounds in the score. I could have done with WAY more remixes during climatic parts or when you activate supers.
@DdG1408 @Dramlin Very good assessment. I really enjoyed Rogue Corps and it could have been stellar if it didn't recycle everything about 30% into the game. Once you get a hang of maximizing your character (and get lucky with drops/resources) to improve your arsenal the game is super fun to play especially multiplayer.
@Paraka I myself welcome an entry in a series that mixes things up and has its own gameplay identity. It was close enough to being Contra and creating a faux bullet hell (combining two of my fave genres) was awesome to me.
I will be getting Operation Galuga because I play every Contra, but I am far less excited for this than I was for Rogue Corps (because all it is is a rehash/make of the first two games, with some additional spices from the third and fourth game(s)). I can just play those if I want a traditional Contra, there are so many to choose from.
"one of the strongest years in gaming ever" is laughable. The list for Switch nominees is mostly indie stuff, a glorified expansion, and a borderline-derivative Mario. Not to say these games aren't good, but to make a claim similar to "best year in gaming ever" is way off the mark considering all of the insane years prior when games were actually innovative, fresh and originating what all the games these days riff off of.
@Chibi_Manny Yea when you start the game you have to talk to the Mailman Cat that is in the center of the village standing on a box, or in the expansion he is standing on a box at the corner of a tent (the Melder) almost in front of where you spawn.
Then you have to select one of the options in his menu called 'Add-on Content'.
It is essentially the 'downloadable quests' that used to be in previous games prior to World.
@Chibi_Manny You really should never let any one (or any) review be the reason you do or don't play a game. It is ok to be informed and seek out information and others' opinions, but if you really were looking forward to this game and understand what it is (have played enough games to have something to go off of), you should be able to discern for yourself if it's up your alley.
If you are young or haven't played many games yet, I would suggest trying out a known classic in the genre and / or watching videos of the titles mentioned in the review to see if this style of game is appealing to you.
EDIT:
Also, a 6/10 isn't that bad, it just heavily leans on this reviewer's disappointment with Air Twister not really standing out or doing something new compared to other games like it. The reviewer also did not like the music or world and enemy designs, which is very very subjective.
@SwitchForce Your comment doesn't make sense to me. Anti matter said this release is a waste of material, how is that so? It contains an entire game plus DLC, for someone like me that hasn't gotten the game yet, it is great value.
For the cartridge to be "a waste of material" it would have to be blank and useless....
@Potato-man news flash, almost every game that releases nowadays has updates....
If you read what Serebii.net said, the DLC serial is already on the cart. If this was a physical release that only had a code inside, then your complaints would be warranted.
I don't see how this is any different than what we have to accept as the current state of game releases never really being complete on disc / cart (like it has been for 10 years now).
Translation: The game is going to be boringly easy.
@RR529 We've already had 2D Mario games with handicaps and skippable levels / warp items. Those things would be plenty for gamers that can't finish the game.
I don't think anyone has said it but doesn't 'the Kacho' Shinya Arino make sense? He's def popular in Japan and semi-popular enough in the West for the old Sakurai to use the words "well-known".
EDIT:
Darn it seems only Fuji TV has a YouTube channel, and the stuff Arino does otherwise has been Nintendo specific on their Japanese YouTube channel. So maybe it will just be a Nintendo collab (if it is with him).
It is funny people's wishlists are full of old games that exist already. Fun for young people but the industry's fascination with ports and remakes has made old gamers' interest in the hobby evaporate.
I get everyone has their opinion and preference but I personally don't see the point of replaying stuff I already have just on a different system or with slightly different graphics.
The good thing is I save a lot of money but it is sad there is barely anything to get excited about these days.
@Pod Yea sorry I didn't see the word monthly in your comment, just fee which I read as the article's topic of the install fee. I also didn't see who you were replying to either, I really wish this comments section nested quotes for context.
@Pod Why would it affect them at all? You think schools are going to be making $200K off the assignments kids are developing? Let alone have 200,000 installs.
This will only affect popular/successful games and the fees are so small that after you meet this threshold you pretty much made bank using an engine that was free.
@Moistnado has made the best comment here.
Everyone else in this comment section is flipping their lid and presumably not understanding the details. The only problem that could happen is the harassment issue but is it even confirmed that they count the same user account's uninstall and reinstalls as unique?
I see no problem with this new structure since it helps smaller devs and only applies a fee to a game that is doing well. If a developer is finding success they have way more options than a small dev which is how it should be. Also, did everyone forget that "nothing worth having is free?"
This is ill timing for me, I recently bought the Chinese/Asian physical release. Oh well, I don't regret getting it I just could have saved some money. @Gummi I do not remember any options for Language in this version so maybe this Western release won't have it either. I will double-check after work though.
Will wait to pick this up on the (inevitable) reduced price; and on the slim chance of us getting a complete physical with all the DLC that will work out nicely too.
@Daniel36 I had this article opened from earlier before subsequent commenting occurred, so I was only going off of your first comment which references none of that and only reads that One Piece specifically is 80% filler. That in no way reflects what you are saying here, that all anime is bloated narratively and contains too much or unnecessary exposition. That to me is way different than filler and I feel you are misusing the term. Maybe next time to avoid confusion I wouldn't use the word filler to describe your disinterest for the (sometimes) verbose exposition some anime have.
That is a problem with these comments since I directly replied to your first comment, but all it does is leave your name when I reply to you instead of quoting or at least referencing your comment number. Had I seen your other two comments saying you are an outlier and that you really just don't like anime series in general for those reasons then I would probably not have had said anything.
So sorry for the confusion on my end, but my point still stands that your initial comment was definitely easy to misconstrue since apparently you meant something different. And I am not a fan of perpetuating false facts (this one in particular has become a pet peeve of mine since it is becoming "believable" the longer the series goes on and more people spread it).
I do hope you can enjoy the live action One Piece, but honestly, there is no way they can craft the same bonds and characters in a sliver of the time compared to what the manga and anime has done. I really would suggest the manga versions for series you find to be difficult to get through as they tend to be way more succinct with faster pacing due to the nature of the medium (and your own reading speed).
@Daniel36 It's cool if you think 1,000 episodes is "too long" to watch... (which I do have to ask, how many series do you watch? If you watch 3 mediocre series that are 300 episodes each, or one AMAZING series that is 1,000 episodes, what is the difference?).
At any rate, where did you get your numbers from? "One Piece has 80% filler" is completely false and fabricated. I get you are trying to be dramatic and validate your decision to not watch the series, but that can't be further from the truth.
One Piece is an epic adventure regardless of filler, of which it only had 99 episodes worth when it was at episode 948. It is up over the 1,000's now and it still is hovering around that filler count which brings it to a whopping 10% of filler.
Wow! So much filler!
It's ok to not like something, but instead of putting a sheep opinion on something paired with false facts, how about just not say anything? Leave it to fans that have actually watched the series to comment on if it is any good or not.
@DekuHero Thanks this is spot-on. Just going to re-iterate.
VERY few artists really have a wide variety in their character likenesses. Those artists generally lean more towards realistic styles whereas super unique and recognizable styles like Oda and Toriyama naturally have a sameness because it all fits into that set design aesthetic.
And anyone that knocks Toriyama as an artist has never actually seen his manga work; which is incredible in all facets outside of "his style". It is perfectly fine to not like his style personally, but using the argument of "sameness within his style" (which I call consistency) or even saying that the dude is overrated is not fair at all nor valid.
Toriyama established so many tropes, visual ideas, and inspired so many artists it is impossible to say he has not had a great impact on the visual world regardless if you like or dislike how he draws. That alone makes him a credible creator deserving of the fans he has.
Has there been any news either way on a physical release? Haven't been able to get excited for this game without knowing if it will be digital only for awhile.
@RetroGames I agree with you (in some aspects (not regarding the movies, the Mario movies are awful)) but you come across as just as bad a 'Mario/Nintendo fanboy' it's hilarious. Both series can't be "the all-time great(est)" because not everyone shares your opinion and not everyone finds the same things fun.
Mario is definitely not immune to criticism just like Sonic or any other series isn't either.
I get it that it's a "Jack Black" song, but what's the big deal about it? I watched the movie for the first time recently and the song was super forgettable (and to me awful sounding).
These levels all look so similar to previous zones they come across as knock-offs. They maybe "new" but they for sure are not "different".
So many callbacks to the Rush games, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Generations etc. with none of the uniqueness all those games had in standing apart from their predecessors.
All-in-all very derivative. The graphical style also doesn't do this game any favors.
@CharlieGirl @Magician @Tharsman
I second the "customer support is slipping" first-hand experience. I too have not been getting shipping notifications anymore (although, can be kinda neat having a surprise delivery almost like a present to myself). There hasn't been issues receiving the games, but now I have to log in and manually check when/if something has/is shipped.
EDIT: We used to get those "X Game is shipping soon, please verify your address" emails too which I haven't gotten in a good 5 months.
This doesn't necessarily mean it's because of the parent company, but hard to ignore the timing.
It's cool these two games have their fans and can be enjoyed; I just don't like any of it. The graphics are smeary, like an HD N64 game. Tears of the Kingdom seems like one step forward in areas then three steps back in others.
I personally am I fan of crisp, colorful visuals so Wind Waker and Skyward Sword are the two "recent" mainline Zelda games I can tolerate. The remake for Link's Awakening is my ideal though in both gameplay and style.
Looking past the graphics and gameplay though, having sub 30FPS is inexcusable. Even if I liked this style of game I would not be able to enjoy it and would most likely stop playing. Anything under 30FPS now makes me nauseous and gives me a headache.
I find it hilarious too that the note for the dips in frame rate say something like "when a lot of junk is going on screen and you are using powers". Oh, so you mean when you're actually playing the game and need that frame rate to be rock steady?
Sensible comments here so far, unlike another site that was just blanket negativity (I get it, but really... hasn't the 'piss on mobile thing' gotten old by now? (I also, hate mobile gaming, but I don't feel the need to spray it everywhere)).
I am curious what they will call gameplay on this one and with Monster Hunter being one of my top series I want to play it. I signed up for the closed beta.
I wonder what will happen for Advance Wars 1 & 2 Bootcamp?
I do get a feeling this is more of a "western dev" issue than a Nintendo of Japan one (good example mentioned in comments: Skyward Sword HD). I don't play ports, remasters etc. so I don't really run into this credits issue, but I would be curious if there are other examples of a western developed game for a Japanese company and were those original credits included.
In the case of Advance Wars Bootcamp, there is an original Japanese dev's game being remade by a western studio... I am willing to bet the OG credits will be in the game.
This game was such a disappointment. I give it a 6/10 as well only because the graphics, music and character design is so solid. If it weren't for the art this would be a 4 or 5/10...
The first game was amazing, and they had a decent plot foundation for this sequel but blew it big time with a dragged out snoozefest that has no mind-blowing reveal and ends exactly how it begins. Everything is spelled out and repeated by characters with no underlying schemes or hidden motives.
One of the few games I ever felt like I wasted my time playing through the end of.
I feel like in this instance it's a "sample" and should have been handled the same way as samples are in the music industry, with proper credits. Original song title, which game it's from, composer, vocalist etc. (as needed).
I'm not going to boycott or anything but this is also Nintendo and to a broader extent a Japanese dev we're talking about. They don't really celebrate or give shout outs to devs unless they are top dogs.
Also RE: Spoiler. Yes that was pretty unnecessary to be that specific in the title.
EDIT: To be fair and seeing Nintendo's side, technically RARE Ware was just a contractor using Nintendo's IP so Nintendo owns everything in that game. Can't compare that to say sampling "who let the dogs out" since that song was not created under the Nintendo umbrella.
Everyone crying about lead times don't understand the real world. The last few years they have been putting these games up for pre-order basically with 'unlimited' copies available for a window of time. Once that window closes, they go into production based on the sales they have, unlike before where they would produce a limited quantity and everyone had to fight over them at 10AM est every Friday.
Things are not just magically created in a few days then shipped to your house. Not to say 1-2 years is acceptable - that is definitely insane, but I am not going to curse them out over it. There is a lot of entitlement amongst gamers with no patience. I'd much rather have the chance to buy something stress-free and then wait (I have a life; don't need every game immediately) instead of worrying about purchasing something like anytime Nintendo does something for sale online.
And people saying they have remorse because a game goes on sale DIGITALLY boggles my mind. If you are willing to buy it digitally to begin with, then why wouldn't you wait for a sale instead of getting it physically? Physical editions are mostly for super fans of that game or people that only buy physical media.
I'm not even as big of a supporter of Limited Run Games after the firing of their employee for no reason... but I still understand business and getting things produced can be extremely time-intensive.

Re: Random: One Piece's Netflix Star Would "Love" To Play Zelda: Wind Waker
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Pokémon Stadium
"incl. Transfer Pak", 'nuf sed.
Re: Here's Your First Look At The Switch Box Art For Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince
Re: Bomb Rush Cyberfunk Shares Some Fresh Screens Ahead Of Next Month's Launch
Has there been any news either way on a physical release? Haven't been able to get excited for this game without knowing if it will be digital only for awhile.
Re: Review: Sonic Origins Plus - Not Bad, But Sonic Still Deserves Better
@RetroGames I agree with you (in some aspects (not regarding the movies, the Mario movies are awful)) but you come across as just as bad a 'Mario/Nintendo fanboy' it's hilarious. Both series can't be "the all-time great(est)" because not everyone shares your opinion and not everyone finds the same things fun.
Mario is definitely not immune to criticism just like Sonic or any other series isn't either.
Re: Random: Jack Black Sings Mario Movie Song, 'Peaches', Live At The Game Awards Concert
I get it that it's a "Jack Black" song, but what's the big deal about it? I watched the movie for the first time recently and the song was super forgettable (and to me awful sounding).
Re: Sonic Superstars Won't Recycle Locations Like Green Hill Zone
These levels all look so similar to previous zones they come across as knock-offs. They maybe "new" but they for sure are not "different".
So many callbacks to the Rush games, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Generations etc. with none of the uniqueness all those games had in standing apart from their predecessors.
All-in-all very derivative. The graphical style also doesn't do this game any favors.
Re: Review: Star Gagnant - Takahashi Meijin Tests Your Trigger Finger With A Simple Shmup
Hoping for a limited physical release on this one/
Re: Tetris Effect: Connected Updated To Ver.2.0.2, Here Are The Patch Notes
I love this game but every time I try playing multiplayer on PS4 I get no matchmaking results. I really want to finish the 'Connected Mode'.
When it launched there were players but I had to go on hiatus, now I am stuck unfortunately.
Re: Sonic Co-Creator Yuji Naka Could Face Over Two Years In Prison
@jump Did you play through all of Balan?
Re: Embracer Group Shares Plunge After $2 Billion Deal Falls Through "Late Last Night"
@CharlieGirl @Magician @Tharsman
Re: Video: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom And Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Side-By-Side Comparison
Re: Samba De Amigo: Party Central's Song List Has Ariana Grande Headlining
@Anti-Matter I agree and will go one further; every Captain Jack cover is worth having in this game.
Re: Review: Afterimage - An Attractive, Sprawling Metroidvania That Struggles On Switch
"Metroidvania", "Dark Souls-like". Only missing "Ghibli-inspired"; then I'd be interested.
Re: Pokémon GO Dev Niantic Is Making A Monster Hunter Mobile Game
Sensible comments here so far, unlike another site that was just blanket negativity (I get it, but really... hasn't the 'piss on mobile thing' gotten old by now? (I also, hate mobile gaming, but I don't feel the need to spray it everywhere)).
I am curious what they will call gameplay on this one and with Monster Hunter being one of my top series I want to play it. I signed up for the closed beta.
Re: Metroid Prime Engineer Calls Out Nintendo, Says Not Crediting OG Devs In Remaster Is "Petty And Ridiculous"
Re: Review: AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative - Another Very Fine Murder Mystery
Re: Legendary DK Rap Composer Disappointed He's Missing From Mario Movie Credits
Re: Limited Run Teases One Last Physical Release For Nintendo 3DS
