Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 29th)

Einherjar

Planned on playing Bayonetta 3, but i'm actually close on dropping it again. It's...really not that good :/
The core game is ok, but the side content (which locks away character upgrades) is just utter trash that grinds the game to a halt every time.

So patience is running out, i might drop it and continue Persona 5.

Re: Nintendo DS Firmware 'Prototype' Reveals System's Unique Boot Up Sound Effect

Einherjar

@NinjaNicky I only have experience with Sony systems up to the PS4, but yeah, overly complicated UI design is kinda their schtick.

Don't get me wrong, i like the Switch's UI as well. It's definitely not bad (even though the folder system leaves much to be desired).
But it's also extremely sterile. A few themes would have gone a long way for instance.

We have so many colorful JoyCon that invite to mix and match, yet the Switch Home screen is either black or white.

Again, it's functional, as @sanderev said it's super fast (not so much the eShop, but that's a different can of worms) and it does exactly what it should.
It's just lacking flair and character. It feels like a device, not a Nintendo device.

Re: Developers Don't Take Kindly To EA's Single-Player Gag On Twitter

Einherjar

I just love that nonsense like that came from the one studio who's recent multiplayer games tanked harder than the titanic, while it's singleplayer outings surpassed all expectations.

There is being tone-deaf and then there's not even being able to understand your own bottom line anymore.

Imagine a company like EA, with all that money and resources, that actually understands its own industry and consumer base and gives a damn...

Re: Gallery: Sega Shares Stunning New Screenshots Of Sonic Frontiers, Out On Switch Holiday 2022

Einherjar

The flat colors make me depressed...
The first screenshot shows that they can do some popping and vibrant color grading (even if it's yet another Green Hill homage).
But everything else is just mute and boring.

So many new games chose to either completely neglect their color grading or, and i hope it's not that, willingly chose to go for cold, flat colors...

Diablo 4 is almost monochrome, Square Enix releases a few games that are muted to hell...
I mean, not everyone can nail color grading like, say, Elden Ring or Horion: Forbidden West did, but this here is just...depressing.

Re: Soapbox: Why Do We Talk About Games By Comparing Them To Other Games?

Einherjar

@Greatluigi Uhm...why not?
If Coca Cola comes out with a new recipe, what do you think will be people's reference point to see if the new recipe is worth it?
That's the whole point of sequels / franchises.
You build up familiarity, so customers know what they get without studying the product first (which loses you most of the impulse buyers).

So, when you take a familiar franchise and extract pretty much everything that made it famous, like any RPG elements in Paper Mario's case, people will draw comparisons to the last instance that defined that franchise.
Because that's the franchise they've been sold and the product that doesn't match up to it.

Very few franchises survive drastic changes to their core.
And Paper Mario, in the eyes of many, me included, didn't survive the jump to being more of an adventure game with tacked on combat that serves no purpose anymore.

Re: Duke Nukem Is Getting A Movie From Legendary & The Creators Of 'Cobra Kai'

Einherjar

Yeah, that won't work out with today's sensibilities.
The only thing that would be applauded today is its Pigcops, i can see Kotaku writing an essay about its deep, meaningful political commentary about it.
But Duke himself would need to be an entirely different character, as the macho, womanizer parody wouldn't fly today.

So, what's the point to begin with?

Re: The Sonic Frontiers Preview Footage Is From An "Early Build"

Einherjar

Yes, of course, an "old build".
The best material to show when starting up your PR campaign.
This is in no way damage control in light of the overall reaction to the shown footage.
Next, some "unforeseen circumstances" force them to delay the release...a couple of times...
Been there, seen that.

Re: New Sonic Frontiers Gameplay Lets The Blue Blur Show Off His Combat Skills

Einherjar

Yeah, no. This looks laughably bad.
The world is completely empty and its desaturated, dead color palette doesn't help.
Those random gray shrapnels in the sky that are cosplaying as platforming gameplay are embarrassing.

And what they call "Combat" here seems to be a mixture of Heroes and 06...make of that what you will.

I genuinely feel sorry for SEGA. This makes Balan Wonderword look finished and competent.
