There are a lot of great indie games coming up for the Switch eShop in the future and now we can add the impressive looking Anew: The Distant Light to the list. It has just met its $35,000 Kickstarter goal for the Switch release.
Here's what developer Resonator had to say about the Switch port:
This is a commitment to full due diligence in planning for development of a Switch port. Their indie program currently appears to be very limited and they are not accepting many games. We anticipate that it will open for more developers at some point, but we will aggressively pursue it regardless. We will acquire dev kits, attempt to establish a developer relationship for the platform like we already have for PlayStation and Xbox, and we will analyze the hardware for technical constraints that we need to optimize around. Doing this early makes a Switch port much more likely and faster to arrive.

In the game you play as a child born of a dying Earth, sent 20 light years into space to save his home. This single player action game takes inspiration from Metroid, Cave Story and even Dark Souls, so the end result should be very interesting to say the least.
The game is being created by veteran developers Steve Copeland and Jeff Spoonhower who have previously worked on Bioshock, Borderlands and Uncharted franchises, to name but a few, with an original soundtrack by Wilbert Roget II.

That music is intense. Looks good
Not personally interested, but kudos to them for intending to bring the game to Switch.
Gosh, that looks fun.
Not a fan of apocalyptic / post-apocalyptic settings but will at least give it a look. Can't watch the video at this point.
I can't wait to hear AAA game from big 3rd party is coming to the Switch.
This looks decent and I wish them every success but before even seeing it I guessed.....2D.....sidescroller.....budget.
Sounds like they aren't actually on the Switch dev program yet? I'm sure it's highly unlikely, but what if Nintendo turn around and say no?
As for the game, gravity mechanics look cool, as do some of the enemies! But slightly put off that the first thing you do on arriving on an alien planet is shoot stuff... I'd have put some of the end of trailer shots at the start (but then maybe people have short attention spans & gotta get to the action first?)
Game looks good but "Their indie program currently appears to be very limited and they are not accepting many games" is worrying.
Not gonna lie, this looks caf. Watch list.
Looks too low budget / flash game
You would think that when people say "Metroid-inspired" that Nintendo would take notice...
That looks all kinds of bizarre, which is what I like to see.
I don't know about anyone else, but I think this looks absolutely fantastic! Loving the visual style and animation. Seriously, this is so my kinda game.
Just hope these guys do indeed manage to get Anew onto Switch. If they do, it'll be a day one instabuy for this indie enthusiast!
@MrYuzhai Compared to most of the other indie games we get, this certainly doesn't look 'low budget'.
I'm so burnt out on 2D platformers it's unbelievable. Pass. Art looks pretty though and I wish it luck.
@JamesCoote Well that is highly unlikely and I doubt Nintendo can afford to say no to these kind of developers.
If they do and it would come out in Public, the backlash would be immense and Nintendo can kiss their rear end goodbye and put the Switch in a dumpster, as every respectable Dev will walk away and not bother anymore with the Switch.
If a crap game like Vrooom can launch on the Switch and these developers cannot, then there is seriously something wrong at Nintendo and I will loose all confidence and instantly sell my Switch.
Eventhough I am personally not interested in these kind of games, this game looks incredible and of high production quality. There is no reason for Nintendo to refuse them.
This looks great.
Can't wait to start Anew!
Pants.. Nothing new here, Next
Interesting game. Not originally something I may play, but I will wait until after it's release before I decide.
It looks alright... I'll check it out upon release. More interested in seeing some bigger budget games on Switch. Something 3D would be cool.
Not my sort of game, but looks like it would be a great addition to the Switch's library, so I hope it all goes well for them.
Why the hell would Nintendo limit the amount of indie games like Axiom Verge etc etc coming to Switch right now?? Makes no sense to me! Wii U was starved for games and so now this? On purpose? Didn't they learn from Wii U? Switch needs games!! Cmon Nintendo open the gates!! Let it flow!!!
I really like the look of it. And the music is great. Hope it doesn't take forever to release because now I want it.
Interesting, didn't expect to see so many negative responses. This looks better than most of the indie games on the Wii U eShop. Looks more challenging than your typical Metroid title, too. They're smart to keep it 2D, considering their tiny budget- they can't afford a 3D game. ($35,000 runs dry quickly)
Well, what can you do. Many Nintendo fans will try out aggressively (or even abusively) mobile oriented games just because it has the Nintendo (or Pokémon) name slapped on it, but won't give a game like this a second look, even though Nintendo hasn't created any 2D Metroid titles whatsoever since the GBA... Thirteen years now?
But yeah, hopefully they get a Dev kit ASAP. I don't think Nintendo would refuse it in this case, that could have a chilling effect on other projects. An indie game program should not be as hostile as the planet's inhabitants depicted in this game.
@electrolite77 amen! I just said that. After killing Wii U owners will lack of games and variety, why would they wanna kick off the Switch with this mentality?? Bring on the games?? Another boneheaded move from Nintendo that I just don't understand at all.
@JamesCoote That sequence of events, as you say it would make sense to be arranged, would be aping Super Metroid a little too much. They probably want to mix it up, and crank up the hostility level.
Nintendo isn't really limiting, they just haven't opened up fully yet for general application. I was talking to a developer several weeks back, and for the launch window it was being done by invite only. I believe this was to ensure proper quality control and no issues as could happen. With a new system. Nintendo is expected to open up general application for publishing soon, and then any indie developer can apply and distribute their games through the Switch.
Honestly, this really isn't that unusual, but because it's Nintendo people take it and twist it to fit the narrative that Nintendo has no 3rd party support and is limiting access. Again, look at the list of over a hundred games, many great Indian platforms announced coming to Switch in 2017. There's zero truth to Nintendo blocking developers outside of general application to publish is not open yet.
@Jeronan Looks like a run-of-the-mill 2D platformer to me. But that's beside the point.
It's just presumptuous.
Also, will every/any indie dev now stick Swith as a platform / stretch target, just to get a few more pledges? That puts Nintendo in an awkward position, as they can point to these guys and say "well, you let them in, why not us?"
@joey302 @electrolite77 This is to ensure better quality on their platform, screening the likes of RCMADIAX. You should be glad after the garbage that appeared on Wii and Wii U.
Of course I wasn't referring to the junk at all. But your statement would make more sense if it wasn't for the fact that titles like Axiom Verge are also being temporarily blocked. RCMADIAX I could care less if I ever see another game from them again while not wishing the man any personal harm in his life. He's just a squirrel trying to get a nut like the rest of us.
@onex
(Shrugs) I don't care about the garbage. I just don't buy it.
@markie7235
'Nintendo isn't really limiting'....(big long explanation of how Nintendo is limiting but not actually calling it 'limiting')
Looks stunning and that soundtrack is great. The title artwork looks somewhat cheap though.
@markie7235 Hmm, Good point.
@MrPuzzlez Oh they took notice... and if it is TOO Metroid-inspired, they will give this developer a notice of their own in the form of a C&D.
@electrolite77 if that's what you got out of my post, then seems like you don't really understand how new hardware launches work. I know it's been several years ago now, but when ps4 launched they made a similar big display of all these indie games coming. What they didn't say is those were the initial developers invited until they open to everyone.
Companies don't give development kits to every developer prior to launch, so only those developers they invite and send a kit to will halve anything right away. There's far too many developers to do that. Instead, they do a selection, and then after launch window open up to all developers for application.
That's not blocking developers, it's just a timed delay. If you want to twist that into developers are being blocked, go for it. If you think Sony or Microsoft are any different, you're wrong
That honestly looks amazing. I guess my only concern is going to be how much action is present. A game like that needs breaks to explain the story through the environment since there doesn't appear to be text.
@onex And Vrooom isn't garbage?
Seems so far Nintendo's new screening isn't working much better.
@Jeronan Nope, just misunderstood.
@markie7235
I don't care what Microsoft or Sony do. You brought them up. Nintendo aren't in a position to be sniffy about support, Dev kits have been out in the wild since last summer, they need to catch up.
@joey302 Agreed, Vroom was a wrong start. However, yes, the Wii U was getting new Independent games every week almost. But, there were 2 maybe 3 companies, who were knocking out cheap, pathetic titles on a monthly basis, and charging more than £1.00, for the crap experience.
I agree they need to let Devs. in who have good quality, innovative titles, that fit well with the system, and I am pretty sure this game and the Devs. will be welcomed with open arms. But I am certainly glad that Nintendo are stopping some of the pathetic games that were building up on the Wii U.
They stated not too long ago, they were vetting Independent Developers to start with, so that the system got quality titles at the begining (looking at you DAVE, or whatever your name is), who PASSED Vroom for release, but would open up the eshop to the broader market of Independent Developers a bit later.
@electrolite77 When it comes to Independent Developers, the Dev Kits are a massive decision factor in deciding to port/create for the SWITCH. SWITCH Dev Kits cost around £500, Both PS4 and Xbox ONE Dev Kits cost around ££3-4,000.
In this developers case, a £500 kit does not eat into their initial budget as much as £4,000 would.
Nice wholesome 50's sci-fi aesthetic.
Looks like a fun Metroid meets Mario Galaxy meets Contra as well.
@akaDv8R
I agree that's a good going. My issue is they aren't getting Dev kits out there to teams that want one. Apparently it's because they're curating but they're still happy for Vroom in the night sky to release.
Looks interesting.
Love how indie friendly the Switch is but going to have to pass on this one, looks to browser-flash game to me
