Re: Review: Afterimage - An Attractive, Sprawling Metroidvania That Struggles On Switch

Dizavid

Okay so...I know when I say the bad story is maybe a deal breaker for me, someone will probably respond that this genre has always been story-light* so as to get the player into the playing part quicker but with a tiny bit of context. But that's kinda why it makes me hesitate. You're already starting at a lower bar via necessity. That doesn't leave much room for immersion if the story scenes are more dreaded than the boss fights.

"Oh ***** another story scene! Now I'm gonna be even more blandly confused!"

*By story -light, I mean as in they really just don't get a lot of total run time story exposition. Their cutscenes and expo are usually done with less overall time to put a decent enough story as to why you're there in the first place. Metroid Dread was great, but it wasn't an incredibly long story when you put it all together without gameplay in-between.

Re: Talking Point: What Is A 'Traditional' Zelda Game, Anyway?

Dizavid

Awaken --> Get three mystical items --> Master Sword --> Final boss fakeout --> Parallel world of some sort --> 6-8ish more dungeons (***** WW's 2) --> Largest portion of what story there is to dump --> boss fight (usually Ganon/dorf).

That's what most people are referring to as traditional, since a lions share of the games after Link to the Past emulated its exact same structure repeatedly.

Re: Bandai Namco Apologises For Tales Of Symphonia Remastered Issues On Switch

Dizavid

I was born one day, Namco, but it was a month of Sundays from yesterday. This isn't a surprise to them! "Why, I just don't know HOW it got in that state! Worked fine when we had it here!"

Yeah, no that isn't what happened. They knew what shovelful of ***** they were tossing out and they did a little known clutch maneuver calling "take the money and fail to run because nobody really calls this ***** out anymore". I'm curious to know if/how long there was a review embargo. They knew people would rush to buy on name recognition, particularly the Switch ed bc ppl who already own every other version may well still get this one bc of the good portability option. So they just silently whistled while polishing their halos, and sent it out to market. ***** them for insulting people's intelligence with this nonsense "we'll investigate bc we too are surprised!" crap. Stop rewarding big name companies with preorders. They do not need the financial help. (Help good indies when possible).

Re: Poll: Do You Want Weapon Degradation To Return In Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

Dizavid

I really had to hesitate over increased durability or fix broken weapons, but finally chose the former. The latter would still have me sticking to a limited few types, whereas their breaking means inevitably I'll be forced to try out ALL the types more than just once. It took me several times before I learned to appreciate spears, for instance. If I could've kept fixing up my sword weapons, I'd never have picked up a single spear again. Now I always have at least a couple. Also the weapons actually breaking and just being gone adds almost a borrowed element from survival horror. I loved trying to guage, "Do I have enough combined durability to take out that camp and not be left weaponless? If not, is there any way to even the odds?" The breaking weapons just forces you into a zone that repairing wouldn't, at least for the most part. Now, given how different Tears may well be, my answer may change. Both are good answers and being able to repair may fit better with its experience. Guess only time (but not too much more now!) will tell...

Re: Soapbox: If You Thought Last Year Was "Sad" For Switch, 2023 Might Be Hard To Handle

Dizavid

Here's the psychology of the issue, and to me it makes Nintendo stand out even more: due to how similar they are, people start to see PS and Xbox as synonymous in terms of games/graphics, bc they essentially are. The differences are so minor that there's still any debate between the two straying outside exclusive IPs is always perplexing to me (and Nintendo absolutely wipes them both out in the IP dept, for record). So they see Switch as in this weird "other" category, standing against an almost entire industry. For me this has been a great year on the Switch, esp given the ports (which I think should count for any that weren't previously mobile and playable).

They also judge Switch by those same high end metrics. I hope Nintendo always hits just below the usual graphical curve, bc it proves it just flat works on the developer side; it's easier to make sure the game is fun and fluid to play when you're not dealing with the most current, NEW tech currently in use. It let's you relax on old knowledge for new benefit. That's why Nintendo's (better) consoles have such historical shelf life. But as usual, the industry will keep laughing at Nintendo, and Nintendo will keep laughing all the way to the bank.

Re: The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Gets Official ESRB Rating

Dizavid

Never doubt Nintendo's ability to extract horror from such a rating. References: Majora's Mask and the Link/Ilia freakout scene in Twilight Princess. Oh and the USED torture chamber beneath Kakariko village in Ocarina. AND the boss of that entire section. ReDeads and their scream of sphincter tightening +5.

Re: Sonic Frontiers Lead Composer Upset By Leaks, Says It's "Ruining The Experience For Others"

Dizavid

Okay so... I'm not for the leaks at ALL. No /s. But. Since they've happened...any word from the leakers if the game is any good? I'm about blue from trying not to hold my breath lol

Edit: to be clear, things looking bland don't really matter to me, depending. If it's fun to play, then it has my attention. Does Sonic "feel" fun to grind and platform with? If so, that'll make a huge difference in immersion, esp for a Sonic game. (Even in side scroller form, feeling a sense of control in Sonic is a hard fought for moment.) Pokemon Arceus was just being slaughtered for its bland looks before release. Then it released and a lot of hate died fairly quickly. It was different and "felt" fluid. Graphics are really overrated. I enjoy em when they're on point, but hate it when I can tell sacrifices were made in gameplay to make the game prettier.

Re: Sonic The Hedgehog's Lifetime Sales Speed Past 1.5 Billion Units

Dizavid

Okay, someone's lyin' somewhere. Square Enix just came out saying the entire Final Fantasy franchise has sold...173 million units. Now, sorry to all Sonic Fans but FF had a lot longer Honeymoon period, and a much larger library of games worth revisiting and even remaking. Meanwhile Sonic has unfortunately been a running (ha) joke in the gaming community for over a decade headed closer to two. You'll never convince me Sonic had sold 1.5 bn units. I would buy it's OUTSOLD FF, to be clear (platformers are much more accessible to casual gaming). But by that much as a franchise that will never let us erase bestiality kisses from our mind, seems like there's a lie somewhere. Maybe exaggeration, but when it's that much of an exaggeration alcohol needs to be involved for it to not be intentional lying.

Re: Memory Pak: 50 Shades Of Morally Grey In Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

Dizavid

Humanity is a cancer. We have good in us, but not enough. Reference: History, modern times, and everything in between. We like to do things that make us feel better about ourselves as a whole, but usually they're token nothings that really don't end in a net change towards good for humanity and our surroundings. We have to have some kind of tangible reward for doing good, usually. That's why, for all our hollering, nobody is making real strong moves on the environment. That pays off later. We want our rewards now. I've been a shut in since...gods, 10 bc I got to see just how lovely humanity is underneath it all a bit too soon. And humanity never, ever stopped showing me they absolutely have a price on everyone in their lives. Not all, as I said above we do have good in and among us. It just isn't enough unfortunately to help dig us not out of the hole we've dug, but the dozens of holes we've dug ourselves into. I wish I felt differently, I truly do.

Re: Hands On: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet's Performance Distracts From Neat New Features And Flourishes

Dizavid

I'll say the same about the bad that I've said about the hype: I'm withholding my opinion until it releases. I was super hyped for PLA, then just before it a few early reviews shot it down. Then I got it and it's my favorite hands down. I even liked Sword, yet could never force myself to finish Moon. With Pokemon, you just never know if the next upcoming iteration will be for you or not. However, I REALLY don't see them releasing a game that laggy and...almost lo-def sounding. The updated build probably has some updates, plus the possibility of a "day one patch" almost every game seems to get now. There's just too much potential good yet also potential bad to call it early. What I will say is this: If y'all would stop preordering, they'd stop shoveling games out in obviously unfinished states knowing they can spend months/years patching it up to total forgiveness. Not saying that'll happen here, just saying if it does, maybe stop paying the plumber BEFORE he finishes unclogging your pipe.

Re: A New Bayonetta 3 Report Features A Differing Account Of PlatinumGames VA Pay Offer

Dizavid

Well, 15 grand still seems pretty low when you are/were the only voice of an entire franchise, but that's more opinion. One thing I WILL say, is Jennifer Hale is the LAST person gamers should be attacking. Even if there were shenanigans, I seriously doubt Hale knew/was a part of it. She's brought a lot of good voices to the hobby. Should maybe have better grounds than "nerd rage" for attacking anyone really, but esp her. I'd imagine she's got the makes of her own fan army to go up against Bayonetta; Hale has many franchises under her belt. Could just blow up before anyone lets the legal dust settle and see what the truth is.

Re: Hands On: AURGA Viewer Streams Switch To Tablets And Laptops, But How Well Does It Work?

Dizavid

@nhSnork I had the same thought while reading, but then it did kinda hit me between the eyes while I had the thought that these people are (I'd imagine due to their jobs) pretty damn good at some Mario Kart and Cuphead. So at what we could call an at least "moderate expert"? (lol) level, they'd definitely be noticing just how sharp these occasional hiccups were.

Then that image of that many people playing. Switch is also marketed as kind of a "back to the fun old days" of friends getting together for couch co-op. During this the ability to use multiple joycons and hook it up to sharper, larger screens. That is until your admittedly better idea, Nintendo ends up (fingers crossed) implementing this into the Switch successor.

Speaking of...all this talk of it as if it's gonna be basically a Switch but on steroids...Nintendo seems to do a "two console cycle" then reinvent themselves, like Madonna, usually to great success, ....also like Madonna, or at least high quality gems missed only due to their business ends moreso than console quality. So who says the successor will even use the portable concept/gimmick? The OLED may be their version of saying "That's good enough to last a console cycle or two; what can we invent next?"

Re: Blizzard Apologises To Overwatch 2 Players For Launch Issues

Dizavid

Continue to listen?? That would suggest they'd ever started, and that information doesn't track with Blizzard in their modern form, esp where Overwatch is concerned. That especially is more of a "we listen only so we can point and laugh about how we're gonna do the exact opposite".

Re: Random: The Original 'Black Box' Art For NES Zelda Resurfaces, And Link Is Happy

Dizavid

@calbeau I wish it DID have it. Can roleplay Zelda as influenced by Braid: Link is a psychopath who will not stop killing until he finds the princess and Ganon becomes her guardian man(butnotbear)pig! Yeah, I wanna see a Zelda mod that adds the smile back in now. I wanna see it in all the Zeldas. Just imagine Twilight Princess only you're playing as one of the creepy smiling Links from his acid trip with Illia.

Re: Bravely Default Developer Team Asano Asks Fans If They Want A New Entry

Dizavid

Since when was Bravely II well received? The extreme difficulty and outright rule breaking of boss fights made it extremely clear the love and balancing that went into the first two were replaced by laziness or, more likely, studio rush to release. I've ZERO desire for there to ever be a Bravely 3rd bc my gods it was depressing to see a series that had such well built up and balanced boss fights go to "we're not feeling up to all that balancing, so we'll just let bosses do basically whatever they want and go as many turns as they desire. There! We have achieved difficulty!" It literally killed my interest in the series, and adding another on top just feels like spitting acid on an amputation wound.

Re: Feature: 8 Unanswered Questions We Have About Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Dizavid

I can't get over how people crap on the story of Shield and Sword. It was my favorite until Arceus. I even enjoy how I started out hating Hop and his battle theme, only to have had them fondly grow on me by the final fight between you and him. The world felt less obsessed with the gym challenge too; it's discussed but always as a side thing. "Oh that's right; you need to continue your gym challenge!" It made the world feel less like every single person felt the need to advertise for the franchise and gym challenges, thus making it feel more "real". The original games were all pretty much the exact same story, and even the original can't claim cred bc it ripped the story of the anime off. At least Sw/Sh tried moving in different directions, and I feel mostly succeeded. I think people just had a placebo effect in place mentally after the, as noted, overblown reaction to Dexit. That's another place I branch away from the rabid fanbase: Dexit made it feel like the first time I ever picked the games up way back in the days of yellow. Since so many had been cut, I had to try out new mon, or ones from previous gens that I hadn't really given a fair shake. Each new Pokemon felt full of potential. Does this one even evolve? If so how powerful will it get, or will it be more of a technical mon? It forced me out of my comfort zone, and ended up making me grow fond of different mons I'd never used before except for long enough to evolve and add numbers to my dex. These are all changes Pokemon needed, and changing is hard and often sloppy (esp for a franchise that did the exact same thing for multiple decades). I think by the end of Sw/Sh life, the devs had made their point. Arceus did much the same despite the extensive naysaying previous to launch: some necessary changes that were rough around the edges in some places, but ultimately felt like new life had been breathed into the series. In fact I haven't been able to really get excited about these two games bc they're deviating from Arceus. Was so much fun to play and fight that way that returning to a more traditional format feels....boring, for want of a better word. I keep hoping the excitement for this release will kick in but if I'm being honest, it's prolly going on the backburner for a few months unless Sonic just absolutely face plants.

Re: We've Played Sonic Frontiers, But What Did We Think Of It?

Dizavid

@BloodNinja room for both, but gameplay should be priority. I NEVER said it shouldn't be focused on at all. HOWEVER, people like this are far more pandered to, and it often results in disappointing games. Very few beautiful games with no thought to gameplay are fun to play. Many ugly games are so immersive you'd feel odd seeing them any other way.

Edit: Here, an example. Close your eyes and imagine the fun new curse words people would invent if they focused hard on making Call of Duty look "stop and enjoy the view" breathtakingly beautiful. But bc of this, they kinda really didn't do so well on the controls, or the hit detection. They made the footsteps too loud/too quiet. One of the voice actors voice was way too cheesily overacted (like OG Resident Evil 1), etc. So many problems go wrong with more and more budget going to graphics and frame rate. It's why so many indie games keep blowing up.

Re: Fired Nintendo Worker Comes Forward With An Account Of Their Dismissal

Dizavid

The only proof you need that a company is never on your side is if they refuse any concerted efforts to ensure employee compensation and quality of life. I've been playing Nintendo since the original console, but I owe it no loyalty. A company isn't even a thing; it's a concept really. The people who help keep the concept extant deserve better job security and quality. If Bowser is so sensitive that a question about unions leads to shady tactics, he and any involved should lose their jobs immediately. A captain drunk on power will never drive the ship anywhere good.

Re: We've Played Sonic Frontiers, But What Did We Think Of It?

Dizavid

@Deezy340 the gaming landscape would be so much more positive and influential if more people thought like this. It's one of my main gripes when people say everything about a game is great but "OMG THE FPS/GRAPHICS SUXXXX". Like...idgaf? Loop Hero looks like the NES's wastewater, but is fun as hell. But bc of this, game devs end up having to focus way more on graphics than I think they should, instead of adding that extra polish to make the games fulfil their original purpose: fun.

Re: Random: Explore A Pokémon Overworld Created By Neural Network

Dizavid

@PinderSchloss I disagree. I think such a concept would lead to a new golden age. We'd be able to share the creations we've all made; turning us all into gaming developers. (I'm assuming by describe what game we want, we could create our own systems and engines it would be using for gameplay. IE, "I want a Diablo hack n slash with the customization depth of Divinity 2, centered around the murder mystery of someone managing to kill several of the more major gods of the world".) Barebones off the cuff descriptor but hopefully gets my idea across: We'd be creating entirely new ideas by blending together a bunch of old ones, with potential to flat make up our own unique concepts.

Re: Feature: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Trailer Breakdown - Theories And Speculation

Dizavid

Since it has so many elements of too many various iterations of the game...maybe this game is going to tie the knot of all those timelines. Or more try to tie them to a united time. The tears could also refer to tears in time and space. Digging through all the parts of their various battles to come/that have happened in order to find a way to end the cycle of Demise for good? We know Demises curse can rip the world in parallel (to the Past/Between Worlds) and between time (Ocarina, Majora ), so a game that did both, let you travel from times and dimensions isn't outside the operation of Zelda games. This would really leave ANYTHING open to make an appearance and/or have an effect. It'd be a lazy but efficient model to pull from all Zelda games without having any good answer for, "Where were all these neat tools in the first game?".

Re: Game Freak Confirms Pokémon Legends: Arceus Started Development Before Sword & Shield's Launch

Dizavid

I hope people who complain about graphics have to spend two decades playing Pong before they're allowed into the afterlife. Gamers Purgatory if you will. The absolute worst I can say about Arceus is I'd have liked a bit more color but the detail put into each landscape meant, as I explored an area multiple times, I grew to know it and recognize where I'd come out at times I'd gotten myself lost but come across a familiar place, until I'd began mentally mapping it out myself. That's the kind of attention I want on graphics. I mean, Pokemon can only get so realistic before they'd have to turn it into a horror game (imagine these creatures only realistic. Most of them would be nightmare fuel. Arbok would be an actual Resident Evil boss)

Re: Talking Point: What Are The Nintendo Switch's Defining Moments (So Far)?

Dizavid

@CharlieGirl right? It's made me feel uncertain about playing the new ones. I mean, I know I'm gonna, but I also know I'm gonna be wishing they'd kept the Arceus system fully intact. To be clear, I don't think it's a wrong direction to blend elements of it in with the more traditional style of combat and such; in fact when Arceus released I predicted they'd prolly make them both systems in use, under different banners (Legends vs main releases). It's a great way to do something new without alienating old fans. I totally get that.....but I know my metaphorical eye is gonna keep going, "Damn this would've been even MORE epic if it was a Legends entry!" Just overexplaining so I don't sound like one of those, "How dare they not cater directly to my singular preferences!!!!" lol

Re: Talking Point: What Are The Nintendo Switch's Defining Moments (So Far)?

Dizavid

Mine has to be Arceus. Screw the graphics; it was the experience that sold it for me. Waaay back when I began playing (I wasn't OG but close; began with Yellow), Arceus is the closest they've come to what my mid teenage brain imagined when I thought, "This game is great but could you imagine what it'd be like if I could just walk around and SEE them/interact with them/catch or fight them?" Being able to actually see the main cast, the mon themselves, just existing in their environment (and not on rails like Snap, which was great in its own right) was like seeing a moment I'd began to lose hope for come to fruition. I use gaming as a part of my attrition warfare against spinal pain, so those kind of moments are big for me. The Switch in general has provided me many such moments.
