Nintendo earlier today released a new firmware update for the Switch and it seems there might be some controller updates to go with it according to a number of users who have already downloaded the update.
Obviously, this is just a little PSA to remind you, in general, to update your Joy-Con and Pro Controllers if you haven't done it in a while. In saying this, Dataminer OatmealDome does mention how the Bluetooth firmware in the Pro Controller has been updated:
To update your controllers on Switch follow these steps from the Nintendo support page:
1. Ensure your console has the latest system update installed.
2. From the HOME Menu select System Settings, then navigate to Controllers and Sensors.
3. Select Update Controllers to begin updating the controller's firmware. If multiple controllers are paired to the console, the firmware will be updated one controller at a time.
The latest firmware update bumps the Switch up to Version 15.0.0 - you can learn what's included in the following post:
Did any of your controllers need updating after today's update? Let us know in the comments.

Man even the datamine is underwhelming.
No, there was no controller update for my system. It said, “All controllers are already up to date”
Update those joycons, to have more stable drift.
Why doesn't Nintendo just include controllers updates as part of the system firmware updates instead of having people do them manually? Nintendo's design choices are so weird
Pro controller updated for me (without cable, I thought it needs to be connected to the Switch via cable?), while the joycons did not
@Scarko No that is on the PS5. On the Switch, and XBOX, controller updates can be wireless.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Because you can have multiple controllers. And not every controller has to be connected to do the update.
Also it's not really that weird if it works the same way on XBOX and PS, which it does. Only difference is that the Switch doesn't notify you there is a controller update.
This article is very handy if you have forgot to update your controllers.
@Scarko I'm sure that used to be the case. Now off to check my two older joycons and pokeball...
Shame joycons are bad even with updates
IDK if this is universal or not, but I couldn't update my controllers until after I updated the console (and it went through its restart cycle, blah blah) and I also had to press a button on each pro controller (to turn it "on") before it would update. So for anyone who got a quick "all controllers are already up to date," maybe try to update the console first, and make sure every controller you want to update is on with the green lights illuminated. 😁
Has anyone else experienced this?
@Clyde_Radcliffe Perhaps because the controllers are not connected to the Switch at all times?
Does anyone else's controller smell really bad after the update?
Do the controllers automatically update if the console is in the dock? Same with the Pro Controller, I had it plugged into the dock during the update and both it and the Joy-Cons are up to date.
@SpaceboyScreams Mine's giving off a faint smell of stabillity and BO.
My Joycons also didn't need to update, but I will try to update the Pro Controllers later today.
Oddly enough, my controllers didn't require an update...
@Scarko I thought they had to be connected too.
The fact Nintendo Switch can support 8 controllers at once gets overlooked but it's awesome. Games like Shredders Revenge on Nintendo Switch can have six players at ONCE unlike the PS5 version.
Pro Controller rocks...battery life amazing. That sucker keeps juice... 😂
@super-nintendo I didn't know the PlayStation 4 version (which can be play on PS5) lack 6-player co-op, I always thought that Sony fans only play with 4 characters at once. Didn't notice it was just a limitation on PS4's part.
@Serpenterror Yep, I chose the Switch version for this very reason. And six players local and online! 😎
After all these years, I didn't know the Pro Controller had updates😳. I have 12 pairs of Joy Con, so updating those is always fun 😖.
Updating my controllers. Okay then Nintendo.
Only my Pro Controller received an update. My two pairs of Joy-Cons, SNES Controller, N64 Controller and Mega Drive 6 button controller didn't receive anything
Not worth it. Joycons is one of the worst control i’ve used.
Couldn't controller updates just be automated the moment they're logged in/logged back in? I'd much rather it just say, "Oh the controller he's using is missing the latest updates due to lack of use in a period of time. Let's fix that real fast behind the scenes."
Oh. I didn't remember. Thank you Nintendo Life for the reminder.
(I did remember to do the system update.)
Why on earth isn't it done as part of the system update? There will be some people who never update their controllers.
@Clyde_Radcliffe other consoles are like that too at least xbox is… i think its just because they’re separate things
My pro controller got a very quick wireless update. Thanks for the reminder!
@Debo626 That is just entirely crazy that you had to power them on in order to get them to work...
@ADM_Ackbar Agreed. Like others have said many times it's also crazy that the system doesn't just update them automatically or have a prompt to remind the user to do so manually, whenever a system update releases featuring controller updates too. Come on Nintendo, make it happen.
@Joeynator3000 That's a hardware issue, not a software one.
No Patrick this update doesn't fix drift.
Thanks for the heads up.
