Square Enix and PlatinumGames' masterpiece NieR: Automata launches on Switch in early October alongside some exclusive costumes, and Square is reintroducing the game's central characters to the world before we make our journey to the future to fight a war with the machines.
Today, we get to meet 2B (or YoRHa No.2 Type B, whatever you prefer!), the game's main protagonist — a combat android who knows her way around a sword and serves YoRHa. She partners up with 9S, a scanner-type android, to help reclaim Earth from the machines who inhabit the planet.
Of course, this is a Yoko Taro game, and things aren't that simple. From the trailer's philosophical narration to Keiichi Okabe's incredible score, there's just enough of a tease here for those who've never got to experience the world of NieR before. Plus there are some flashes of gameplay which looks pretty smooth to our untrained eyes!
We also get another brief look at a few of the exclusive costumes coming to the game's Switch release. 2B's Pod skins look to be based on characters Mama and Carrier from the mobile game NieR: Re[in]carnation. Check out the trailer and the costumes below!
NieR: Automata The End Of YoRHa Edition launches on 6th October on Switch. Have you played NieR: Automata before? Will you be picking this one up on Switch? Let us know!

Glad more people will be able to play this game for the first time. It’s just brilliant.
Very much looking forward to seeing how the Switch port turned out.
I already played this on steam but man, I am seriously considering double dipping. It was such a phenomenal game!
Hmm, person with big sword hacking and slashing, I will see how it turns out on the switch and then get back to you.
I have never played these games before but it looks like my sort of thing...
If they can pull it off great. Been aging rhe PS4 version on PS5 and wow is it fast and smooth. One of the greatest.
Switch fans rejoice.
Loving this game, day one pre-order is set. This and Bayonetta 3 will make my October fantastic.
A little reminder Virtuous are working on this port and they've done the following Switch ports
So if you liked those, you'll likely like this port
What a beautiful and incredible game! Cannot wait to replay this on the Switch!
I completely forgot this was coming to switch, very excited to finally give it a try
Even though I can play this on my PS5 at 60fps, I still prefer to play it in handheld mode on my Switch OLED. Day 1 pick-up. Hopefully Nier Replicant will come to Switch also.
I've always wanted to try this game but was constrained by platform. I'm glad this is finally making the Switch!
Looking forward to playing this. It looks fab!
First time I'm seeing this game after hearing nothing but praise from fans and weebs.
Can anybody answer my question of how weird is the story and premise of this game?
Because I get that it's the post-apocalypse in the future and you're a robot swordswoman dressed up in a French maid outfit going out to destroy other robots. That setup alone is pretty out there and I imagine it gets more ridiculous.
Preordered and awaiting my copy. I was hoping this would come to switch. Just what I need for a nice autumn game.
I have it on PS4 as of about a year ago. The first time I played it, I died about 30 minutes in only to discover I had to redo the entirety of that whole 30 minutes because there wasn’t a save point. I rage quit and set the game aside. Flash forward about 6 months I tried it again for the second time and got much further and the game really started clicking.
Once I found out the switch version was coming I stopped playing and am now waiting to start over again on that. I think this game sounds perfect for Switch/handheld so I’m just waiting for release.
So I guess one takeaway is, for newcomers, be freaking careful that first portion of the game: if you die, you start over from the very beginning of the game and it’s really disheartening. Once you’re past that, it’s game on!
ADDITION: I just watched there trailer and wow yeah.. this Switch port looks completely uncompromised. I'm off to the local game store to trade my PS4 copy in.
Absolutely insane if that footage is indicative of how the Switch version runs. Genuinely thought this port would need to be compromised beyond belief to make the jump.
Def. grab it if you haven't experienced it on another platform. This is very much a GOTY-tier release.
This is my most anticipated release on Switch this year and I can't wait to pick up my preorder!
NieR Automata and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim nearly pushed me into buying a PS4 years ago, but I held off and hoped against all odds they would get Switch ports. And then BOTH titles got Switch ports announced for 2022. Oh, happy days!
To hell with the backlog, I'm playing this when it arrives. MH Rise and Splatoon 3 will still be there when I get back.
Cool trailer! That inside box art is awesome. Reversible Inlay! 2B is such a cool character.
I thought the game was ok. I bought in to all the hype and was let down.
I need to sit down & finish this thing on Steam. Great game, just my level of procrastination seems to be even greater.
Shed literal tears when I got this game's true ending. Anyone who hasn't played it, do it. It's far more than it initially appears. (As my avatar shows, I'm a bit of a fan.)
I am curious about how it will turn out on Switch, but I'm not sure I'm curious enough to double dip.
I tried out Nier Automata a few months ago, thought it was fun enough but got checked out on it pretty early in and kind of have a hard time seeing myself bothering to go back and play more of it.
Buying this day 1. Switch footage looks nice, more proof that with proper optimization, devs. can work wonders with the Switch.
Played it on PS4 and it was phenomenal, only got the one ending though which I guess goes against what this game is all about (moved onto other things straight after but this was 2017 which was a nuts year for games so I can excuse myself). This version looks brilliant, can’t wait to get into it again
October is looking pretty stacked already…Nier, No Mans Sky, Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope and Bayo 3!? This being right on the heels of Splatoon 3, Xenoblade 3 and MH Sunbreak too…my backlog will be in Heaven!! 😝
@russell-marlow Story wise, it's a very philosophical game. You get this impression as soon as you start it, with 2B narrating "We are perpetually trapped... in a never ending spiral of life and death". The story explores various philosophical themes like, "what is the meaning of life?", "what does it mean to be human?", "what is the purpose of religion?", "what is free will?". The game handles these themes surprisingly well too and seemingly goofy things early on turn out to be tied to those themes later on. Yes, that includes the fact that you play as a female android wearing a leotard showing ample amounts of her rear end.
Gameplay wise, the game somehow weaves various gameplay styles together in a way that feels fluid and purposeful. 3D action, 2D action, platforming elements, shooter, bullet hell, RPG levelling and progression, etc.
It's a really, REALLY, good game.
The main criticism many have is that there is a point where they want you to replay much of the game so far with another character. The other character has different tweaks, and there are additional cutscenes and fun differences, but this part of the game can feel a little lame. But there is a payoff later on.
One of my favourite games. The story and characters are heartbraking though, those expecting some weird anime style Bayonetta action game will be in for a shock as this game gets very deep with its themes and is pretty depressing at times. Its soundtrack is also godly, its incredible music and again pretty heartbraking in places.
@greengecko007 Ugh, if there's one thing that irks me it's how Japan in their media handles heavy topics with also having around weird cute robots and little girls, both clashing aesthetically and sort of making it difficult to take seriously when presented together. It seems too be a trope of theirs in anime. I noticed similar topics be brought up in stuff like Evangelion, and I don't think it handled it well, in fact it was almost cringe-inducing.
Since Japan doesn't practice Christianity or any other religions or even understands them culturally, they probably shouldn't be discussing them in their media because the way it's presented it's hard to take seriously. Not to mention, they do produce a bunch of degenerate stuff in their media, so I don't think think they have the right to criticize other religions when they make the type of stuff they make.
@russell-marlow I somewhat agree, but I really can’t emphasize enough that Nier Automata is not that.
Sexuality is a part of humanity. 2B is clearly a sexualized design, but it is done purposefully. Without going into any spoilers, the game does expect the player to recognize that 2B is a sexy android from the perspective of the person playing the game. This causes the player to make some assumptions about character motivations at one point, which turns out to be a twist.
The exploration of religion too is not an attack on religion. Rather, the game uses it again as an example of something giving humanity an identity.
I would argue the genius of Nier Automata is that it does initially come across as “that game with the sexy robot girl” but it very quickly takes your initial expectation and uses that to create a thought provoking story.
Even putting the story aside, the game is just plain fun.
@greengecko007 Yeah, I dunno. A game where you play as a petite android girl that's young wearing a sexy maid outfit using a katana and being accompanied by some cute robot friends and also an androgynous boy (1B) that appears far younger than her while also coming across other similar androgynous male characters really makes it obvious this was made for a Japanese audience in mind and just distinctly makes it obvious where it was made from, Japan.
It's very rare for Japanese developers to make something with a wide appeal like towards Westerners with games like the Souls series, Metal Gear Solid, and I guess Resident Evil. I'm more speaking along the lines of aesthetics and not including stuff that typically appears in anime like cute little girls, toy-like-looking animals or monsters, and I guess really androgynous skinny male characters.
There are probably some more specific examples that I could mention, but since I don't watch anime I can't exactly remember too many off the top of my head.
Oh yeah, girls with absurdly curvy figures and huge busts.
@russell-marlow You're crossing into some dangerous territory with that, but I'll bite.
Your sidekick for a good chunk of the game, 9S, does indeed look to be modeled after a young man. I'd say his appearance looks pretty typical of a teenage boy. If he looks androgynous to you, I can only assume that you are used to seeing more masculine looking women. 9S certainly is no Superman, but I'd say he looks very reminiscent of early western comic hero sidekicks like Robin, a similarly young, slender, teenage boy who also wore short-shorts...
If you have some personal issues or stigmas with Japan, I'm not sure why you bothered coming here asking what the game is like to begin with.
In my opinion, the game is great.
It is 100% fact though, that the game is not just "UWU sexy anime girl beats bad guys ohmygosh so kawaii my waifuuu".
It is exactly 0% of that.
"Oh yeah, girls with absurdly curvy figures and huge busts."
You mean, like a good chunk of Western media too?
Pushback against this in Western media only happened in the last decade or so.
@greengecko007 No, I don't typically like seeing "masculine-looking women", but it's obvious to see girl-ish looking men with long hair and makeup that typically appear in Asian media. It's not something I see in other parts of media in the world, it's mostly exclusive to Asian media meanwhile if something like that were shown here it would be mistaken for being gay, which ironically most of the time it isn't since Japan thinks muscular guys with beards is gay but men with a soft face complexion and wearing cosmetics is hetero. Again, this is only an Eastern thing more so than a Western thing.
It's just something that people who don't consume Japanese media would notice. And I don't want to come across as racist or whatever, but I'm just pointing something out for anyone who might be out of the loop. That's it.
And when I mentioned, "girls with absurdly curvy figures and huge busts."
I was talking about anime and anything related to it. And I can't exactly tell where a good chunk of Western mainstream media has it since there's there's been actual pushback against it with feminism and such.
