Update [Thu 31st Mar, 2022 02:05 BST]: It's official, Nintendo has expanded its SNES and NES service with three more titles.
Original story [Wed 30th Mar, 2022 13:45 BST]: New games for the Nintendo Switch Online service have been trickling out at a pretty slow pace so far, though some scheduled maintenance for the NES and SNES apps suggests that more could be on the way this week.
We're only speculating at the moment, but as reported by our friends over at VGC, Twitter user NinStatusBot - a profile that tracks scheduled maintenance sessions - has reported that both apps will be down for maintenance on Thursday morning between 00:55 – 02:00 UTC.
This could be absolutely nothing - in fact, it probably is absolutely nothing - but the last time the NES and SNES apps went into maintenance was directly after the latest Nintendo Direct, after which Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings were added to the SNES and NES libraries respectively.
Similarly, the Nintendo 64 app went into maintenance shortly before the arrival of Banjo-Kazooie, and the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) app went into maintenance just before the addition of 5 games to its library. There has, however, been instances where the apps have gone into maintenance without the arrival of new games.
Meanwhile, ex-Nintendo employee Kit Ellis has lamented the lack of clarity regarding the addition of legacy titles to the Nintendo Switch Online service, stating "I almost have more confidence in Sega to deliver their best Genesis stuff, than I do with the other platforms".
Do you think we'll be getting new NES or SNES games this week? Which games would you like to see on the service? Let us know!

FF5, due a play. Under rated FF.
I hope for GB games.
Your unrealistic optimism terrifies me.
I wish Adventure Island games would come to Switch online
Meanwhile, Sony is giving a premium tier for services on the PS5 on Play station Plus. I don’t own a PS5. Nintendo step it up please. NES/SNES games are cool and all but…… we want more.
Chrono Trigger
Let it be mario rpg, or something we would care about
Would like NES to keep going, it really needs to..
I mean they wouldn't do maintenance for extremely random tat would they? Maybe Mario RPG? Maybe some actual third party games? (Capcom/Konami)
probably nothing
I reckon that Kit is the new Kate dale round these parts.
❗️Its an update for all the 'Power Rangers' Games that appeared on S/NES.
More Kirby to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the franchise perhaps? Kirby's Avalanche and Kirby's Super Star Stacker added to SNES NSO meanwhile N64 NSO gets Kirby 64.
@InkIdols Honestly the only game that’s not already on either of those apps that I care about. The N64 & Mega Drive/Genesis ones still have a ways to go though of course
@River3636 Sony's service is about cloud based classic games for the most part. Current games will be playable locally, but games on playstation lose their value badly after the release window, so they are not giving that much.
Removed - unconstructive
Id like to see faxanadu and startropics 2 on nes and un squadron on snes
@tweet75 was about to say - StarTropics 2 is a big omission.
Let us buy the games on NSO! The rental means one day the rug will get pulled from underneath us and all the games and save files will disappear when they discontinue the subscription.
I don’t think many people are expecting much from Nintendo now.
@Moistnado You are joking or baiting?
Maintenance means something BIG.
I doubt it. Final Fantasy Games can only be good for Square Enix if they're SELLING them, and not letting people play them for an annual fee on the Switch. My guess is that by the time we'd expect E3, we'll probably see a Nintendo Switch port of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection, because to them, THAT is the true way to experience the Final Fantasy games from I to VI, especially with how the lyrics were added to the Opera Scenes from FFVI.
How about Super Mario RPG? I find it shocking it's not on SNES online and even weirder that fewer people are asking for it. Do people not know this game exists outside its fanbase and Geno? Yes, I know the game is in ownership hell with Square but if we could get Sora in Smash I think this game is long overdue for Switch
@abdias I’m totally interested in the service. I just need to see what it’s all about it’s vague but it looks promising. I mean I did own all the PlayStation’s except PS2. Which is why I’m on a wait-and-see before I make the big purchase. My time is limited though. It is a $120 a year. If I know I’m getting all these games over 700 up them, then that might be a good value. It is a no game pass or anything but I’ve never been an Xbox type of guy. I just think Nintendo need to take notice. Those PS2 games are the ones I am wanting.
@chipia What do we want? Wind Waker.
What are we getting? GB Link’s Awakening. 😉
Probably is just maintenance. There are still a few games on SNES that people want like Mario RPG or any of the Square RPGs like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasies etc. but most of the heavy hitters are already on those 2 apps now.
Are there any NES games people are still waiting on?
How can you guys not get excited for Bram Stoker's Dracula, Pro Sport Hockey and Kings of the Beach Volleyball on NES and ESPN Speedworld and Pac-in-Time for SNES?
PLOK CONFIRMED!
While PlayStation and Xbox services are getting current games every month together with a library of hundreds of previous generation games, we are left with a remote possibility of a couple of 30 year old games.
I have moving on from NES and SNES games even they were my childhood games but I have no longer interest with 8 / 16 bit games from NES and SNES.
Nintendo has already pretty much given us all of their first party NES and SNES titles. Third parties aren’t as likely to give their games away for essentially free when they can sell them in separate collections (like Konami has done with Castlevania and Capcom with Mega Man). Realistically, I don’t expect much more in terms of high profile NES and SNES games. People hoping to see SNES RPGs like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy are dreaming.
@Shredderlovespizza Nothing odd about it. Why put their games on Nintendo's service for a fraction of the price (though licensing to Nintendo) when they can sell them individually on Steam for more.
Its really sad that Nintendo has programmed its loyalist to get excited for this and to ignore the lack of real games.
I heard they were going to add PS5 games to the NSO.
@Axecon That's cause it's made by Square Enix and Square Enix doesn't support NSO. Reason was cause if the game made it to NSO Square wouldn't be able to receive much of a profit from it as it's not really selling on NSO, it's just a free privilege for NSO users. They rather sell the game for profit than allowing it to be play for free on NSO. That's why you don't see Square Enix other games for NSO yet. I betcha if Nintendo add the ability to purchase these games on NSO as well, Square Enix would dump a whole load of their games on NSO instead of relying on remakes and remasters like they currently does.
I wish I could get my hands on an N64 controller for a reasonable price, as they are going for stupid amounts on eBay now.
Donkey Kong Country 4! Oh wait..
@River3636 70% of that premium tier is just cloud streaming of old games so not really that interesting. All the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP stuffs are through their Gaikai OnLive cloud servers, only their PS4 and PS5 titles got the download treatment.
Mario Paint with USB mouse support please!
Super Mario RPG, Startropics 2, and Yoshi's Cookie are the ones I'm still waiting on.
Nintendo's strategy has been to pick games that nobody cares about but me, so I'm going to guess: NES: M.C. Kids, A Boy and His Blob. SNES: UN Squadron, Utopia.
Without Nintendo hyping it?
I'd love to see DuckTales and Ninja Gaiden II!
It is awful that we even have to ask that question. These roms should drop a lot more frequent. Instead we get so much radio silence. Nintendos handling of this feels erratic at best. Months of nothing... then some super obscure games...then NSO gets its own slot in a Direct with Earthbound... now back to silence again...
More SNES and NES games are very welcome. But it's slowly beoming apparent that they mean nothing to kids who don't love video games as much as they think they do.
My personal hope is that I'll be able to delve into some forest mushrooms and hear a reptile read haiku but that's just me.
@Shredderlovespizza It's a Nintendo console or nothing for me for FF5 I'm afraid.
Praying for Tetris Attack on SNES NSO
(I already know that Panel De Pon is on there and it's pretty much the same thing, but I don't know Japanese, and I actually like to know what I'm reading)
It will probably be one game and some worthless save states disguised as special versions.
If they add 2 more high quality Consoles and maybe 1 more DLC then I’ll consider getting the expansion pass till then I ain’t payin.I do own the base subscription but only cuz it was 20 bucks.
@BlueGBAMicro
I really enjoyed the SNES Power Rangers games. I went back and played them a few years ago, and they were still fun. Fighting Edition is horribly unbalanced, but it had a lot of heart put into it.
There is too many games and not enough time.
I’ve completed 1 or 2 nes games and same with Snes. Played a little n64 and sega. I mainly play new games on switch
All i have to say is
Pac-Man 2 or we riot
Hopefully we get Wave Race soon.
Zoda's Revenge, please! Tired of that game trailing StarTropics by so long every time.
@Silly_G This is the new click bait. Maybe it gets more interaction?
@GrailUK
The meta focused Fortnite/Apex generation.
Come on mario rpg!!!
@TheRedComet Brought up on throwing their parent's money at nothing whilst parents don't know any better.
Give us one of the Parodius games, Nintendo, you cowards.
Please no platformers, too much
I wonder if those of you who have laughably unrealistic expectations (Final Fantasy V?? Super Smash TV?? Chrono Trigger??????) are the same ones who will complain the loudest when it turns out to be something you’ve never heard of.
Thursday is my birthday, it would be a great timing to finally add my favorite game, The Legend of the Mystical Ninja, to the SNES library.
@daveMcFlave I still love (MM)PR to this day and have all PR Handheld Games CIB across GB, GBC GBA, DS and 3DS.
MMPR:TM on Mega Drive is my favourite.
How is this a "rumor"? It's speculation.
@thesilverbrick People hoping to see SNES RPGs like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy are dreaming.
They had their chance when to put Chrono Trigger in with Chrono Cross and Radical Dreamers. I don’t think there will be a Chrono Trigger collection.
Even if you don't count games that'd require licensing, Nintendo still has a catalogue of stuff they could add. Even if they added, IDK, Mario Paint & Donkey Kong Jr. Math, it would at least be them trying, which they just haven't been. I still think that we very well might be seeing the number of games start to go up with the closure of the 3DS/Wii U eShops, since they can't sell them anymore.
I'm all for more SNES games coming to Nintendo Switch Online, it doesn't matter to me if it's something I've played before (as I can potentially revisit a childhood favorite),or something I've never played before and get to experience it for the first time.
Super Mario rpg or mystical ninja would be great for the snes. Perfect dark for the N64. Streets of rage or shine force 2 for the genesis
Give us Murasame Castle, Nintendo. Cmon. Make Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, and some Castlevanias happen too.
Universe do your thing…
NES App: Base Wars, Battletoads, Ducktales
SNES App: Terranigma, Final Fantasy V, Super Mario RPG
N64 App: Pilotwings 64, Perfect Dark, Diddy Kong Racing
Game Boy line App: Exist.
… Wun can only hope.
@Moonsorrow999 I highly doubt we will get any Square Enix games on Nintendo Online service.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I thought it was just PS3 that gets to have that streaming. I could be wrong.
@LiNeR @Bearzilla823 @LittleGhost @bonjong23 did you check out the update to the article? it's pretty cool.
@CharlieGirl dig dug rocks
@Crono1973 Square will likely release Chrono Trigger as a stand-alone game on Switch, like they’ve done with most of the Final Fantasy games. Either that or they could remaster it in the Octopath Traveler engine. They’re not going to give it away for essentially free via Switch Online when they can monetize it.
@thesilverbrick They could have monetized it by putting it in a collection with Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross like they did with Secret of Mana.
@Crono1973 Sure, they could have. But they also could have bundled the three PS1 Final Fantasy games together and they didn’t. Selling it separately wouldn’t exactly be out of character for Square Enix. Regardless, I’m sure they don’t want to give it away for basically free as a Switch Online game when they could sell it themselves, which was my original point.
@thesilverbrick ...and my point is that since they didn't include it with the other two games and haven't released it on NSO, they don't intend to release it at all.
@Crono1973 That’s entirely possible, though I don’t see why they wouldn’t. People would buy it.
