Update #2 [Tue 28th Jun, 2022 17:20 BST]: The official Japanese NieR Twitter account has shared the specs for the upcoming port of PlatinumGames and Square Enix's massively popular sequel to the original NieR.
On Switch, docked, you'll get to play as 2B and 9S in 1080p, while undocked the resolution will be at 720p. The game aims to run at 30fps.
Update [Tue 28th Jun, 2022 14:35 BST]: Following rumours earlier today that Yoko Taro and PlatinumGames' Nier: Automata might be coming to Switch, the announcement has been officially made in today's Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase. Dubbed Nier: Automata - The End of YoRHa Edition (which released for PC and PS4 back in 2019), it's launching on Switch on 6th October 2022.
Here's the info as given in Nintendo's press release — check out the segment from the Direct Mini below that:
The critically acclaimed world of NieR:Automata invades Nintendo Switch! When machine lifeforms from another world attack without warning, unleashing a new type of threat, mankind is driven from Earth and takes refuge on the Moon. As 2B, a member of the android military force YoRHa, immerse yourself in a ferocious battle to take back the planet. This version of NieR:Automata comes with previously released DLC, plus costumes exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version. Reclaim Earth in NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition, launching on Oct. 6. Pre-orders begin today in Nintendo eShop and in the My Nintendo Store on Nintendo.com.
Original Story [Tue 28th Jun, 2022 01:45 BST]: A special Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase is airing later today in the UK, and of course, the rumours have already started.
Nacho Requena, a Spanish games journalist who accurately predicted the date of the latest Direct along with its third-party focus, has reportedly teased some of the games that could be on the way to Nintendo's hybrid platform.
One is Atlus' Persona series and the other is believed to be Square Enix's action RPG, NieR: Automata:
“I’ve also been told that some Persona game will be present, though I don’t know which game
“I’ve also been told there will be another game that has been available for some time on other platforms… it’s been available for four years now.”
This message followed with the same source sharing a GIF of Nier director Yoko Taro, and a mention of this other game being released between 2017 and 2018.
The PlatinumGames' title NieR: Automata first arrived on the PlayStation 4 and PC in 2017, and was followed by an Xbox One release in 2018. The team behind this release has previously mentioned how they would be open to a Switch port, and at one stage, told Switch fans to ask Square Enix if they wanted to see it happen. A NieR datamine last year also reportedly hinted at possible Switch plans.
As for Persona, there have been ongoing rumours the previous entries in the series will at some stage show up on the Nintendo Switch, and recently Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal were announced for Xbox during its 2022 showcase.
One other rumour doing the rounds is that a Metroid Prime Remaster is apparently lined up for November, and will follow with both Prime 2 and 3.
Do you think we'll ever see NieR: Automata on Switch? How about the Persona series? Leave your thoughts below.

Don't get my hopes up. If a native port, I might cry. I was feeling pretty down on the news lately but this could change it all for me. A dream port that I thought was impossible.
Eeek!!! I would buy this!!!
Dark Souls 3. Please and thank you
I know we might be getting sick of hearing the rumours of Goldeneye, but what do you think the chances it gets announced here.
I mean, this is a partner showcase and this game is likely seen as a partnership of Microsoft and Nintendo and the remaster might be claimed to be third party as produced by MS and Rare.
The other rumour I hope comes true is the French website that said we’d be getting Arkham in August so this seems like the right time to announce.
Great game… but its nihilistic themes sometimes make you feel overwhelmed and depressed about the whole situation in that world.
Great soundtrack too.
The graphics aren’t THAT impressive for them not to be able to port the game to Switch.
Game is from 2017 you could have bought a PS4 by now.
Honestly with all of the mature themes in this game I don't think nintendo would ordinarily touch it.
Geez y’all just wait until tomorrow before you hype yourselves into depression.
I will assume Nier Replicant will also be coming to the Switch and both games will be Cloud versions. I'll pass.
@LittleGhost I mean, yeah, it has complex mature philosophical themes. But it’s not like it has forbidden, sexual or taboo topics. You can easily find other games like this in the eshop.
Certainly more realistic than RDR2.
Why GTAV hasn't happened yet is beyond me.
Square guys…it will be cloud crap. Hope I’m wrong.
Don't do it! Don't hype me up like that.
Seems more likely than like Red Dead Redemption 2 imo. But it could be a cloud version though.
But we will see
We will see when tomorrow comes if it's real or not.
Despite not really enjoying Nier as much as I was told I would, I think it would be really cool on Switch. I tried it a few times and although it’s definitely quality and good, I just didn’t feel a need to keep going after about 2-3 hours in.
I’ll be over in the Persona line. Honestly though, if any of these are Cloud versions, you won’t see a penny from me and I know there are a bunch others here who will be walking out right along with me.
Gameplay wise it was fun, if a bit too easy to break with the right builds. Story wise, it felt like a convoluted mess up until you get to that last section and everything comes together. I think I'll remember the ending for the rest of my life.
Persona 1 and 2 or the two Q games would be nice for a few reasons.
I don’t like being aware of this kind leak
I would love Nier Automata as long as it's not cloud
@Knightrider1 If it were to come to Switch, it would probably be on Nintendo Switch Online, so it probably wouldn’t be in a Partner Showcase.
@QLM17 Hahahaha, good luck (;
Because the rumors surrounding the direct were correct, therefore this must be
(Sarcasm)
A native running Nier Automata port is on the top of my personal wishlist for the direct. Give us a 2B amiibo too.
Played this game many times now and I never get bored of it. That being said I have no need for a Switch version assuming there is going to be one.
Batman Arkham Collection is making the rounds again, too. Could be a juicy Direct… or just another informative one. However, I think it’ll be a decent one at least.
If this came to the Switch natively, I'd pick it up STAT.
Oh. Nice.
Played it on PS4 and thought it was OK. A bit overrated.
Persona in Switch would be awesome, though.
As someone that cried when I had to leave my ps4 behind when I move just because I was so close to finish it, I'll probably cry again if its true.
Persona Q collection and Nier automata Cloud version
Not for me but cool for those that would purchase it.
Honestly, a solid game, but would be really bummed if this the “big game” for the Direct. The novelty of the Witcher coming to the Switch was fine, but I mean, I sort of feel like Switch rereleases have become a logic to roll out a game that is done generating sales of any significant and slapping a full price sticker on it for another round…. Unless there’s something of note added to the game, of course.
Never played the game, it’s on my list, however, if it does go on the switch, and not cloud, I will be happy as heck!
These games aren't for me personally, but I can't deny those would be big wins for the Switch library if true. Here's hoping, as it would make a lot of people very happy.
I'd love to see this 2017 GOTY of mine come to Switch at last, but at the same time I'm betting that this is going to be the "Cloud Version", considering how demanding it was while I was 100%ing it.
@LittleGhost cough witcher 3 is a mature title cough
Great game, but not a terribly well-optimized one on either PS4 or PC, so I'm not sure the developers would be up to the task of getting it to run on the system.
Ooo I hope so! Nier Automata and 13 Sentinels were the PS4 games I most wanted on Switch. We’re halfway there!
Of course, if these rumored games are cloud versions they won’t get a cent from me…
If I see Persona 5 and Nier Automata native on Switch, I might start throwing money at the screen and then faint.
Cloud versions of anything is an insult.
Automata was the most disappointing thing I've played in modern gaming. I played the demo, which was amazing, then got the actual game and was let down by it being yet another large, empty, open world. It really felt like a bait and switch.
All bets on cloud version.
I hope they will announce a Resident Evil game that's exclusive to switch. I remember a rumor about this last year 🤞🤞🤞
@Schizor88 from Dusk Golem? Dude he’s wrong like a lot of times and steals information from other leakers.
He said that Claire is one of the Dimitrescu Sisters. He also said Alex Wesker is the main villain of Village.
Resident Evil is thriving now because of no exclusivity deals from Nintendo. An exclusive one will probably hurt sales at the best and also franchise. So I doubt resident evil will be there.
If Capcom were to be there I expect Sunbreak to be shown. A wish to Capcom from me and is not too high above expectations is Ace Attorney 7 or Ace Attorney 2nd trilogy.
But we will wait and see.
@Nameless_Shame expect cloud versions for every game until proven otherwise
Great more years old ports of games most of us have already played on consoles 1-2 gens ago
I tell you what I’d love to come to Switch, Muramasa Rebirth, Dragon’s Crown Pro and Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir. Much like P4G, they all ran just fine on Vita, so Switch should be no problem. Plus they’re also published by Atlus.
@UltimateOtaku91 imagine complaining about more big games coming to the platform. I swear, people on this website.....
I'd obviously take all of those but I'll keep my healthy skepticism for now.
@Itachi2099 for some this is good news but for people who own a switch along side other consoles then this isn't good, we're talking games that have been out years, nier automata 4 years, kingdom hearts collections 5 years old, persona 5 been out 6 years no man's sky been out 6 years as well, I don't get how people can be so happy getting such old games consistently and paying high prices for them.
Don't get me wrong I love my switch and I've played 90% of its exclusives, but in terms of third party support i think its terrible, your paying quadruple the cost compared to how much you can get these games on other consoles for and your getting a worse version.

Please god please
One general question: Did those late ports ever sell well? I feel like it has never worked out, because any marketing push and hype happened years ago. How many copies did they sell of Witcher, Skyrim or Dark Souls for Switch?
Persona on Switch?
So that's what that pig flying outside my window was about.
All I want is Persona 4 Golden. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
JUST ANNOUNCEDDDDD RUMOURS ARE TRUE
@Axecon it IS a native port
I mean this is a cool announcement, but why even watch these events if everything was leaked beforehand? I know they put care and effort into these exhibitions to try to give something to the fans but Why even bother thanks to leaks? There were 0 surprises in this showcase. I can see why it was so "mini"mal.
I own multiple consoles. This did nothing for me, especially since everything leaked before hand and every FB site updated w the announcements. It was pointless. Do we really want to send a message that they don't even need to bother with this anymore because I feel like we are.
A physical version has been announced confirming that this is, in fact, a native port.
https://twitter.com/rpgsite/status/1541774977271181312
Which is utterly mind blowing.
This was one of my most wanted announcements for a while.
I’m getting a Steam Deck so I was going to pick it up there but I heard the port wasn’t great so I’ve got my fingers crossed It’s better on Switch.
I'm impressed they got this running on a Switch.
But Square-Enix couldn't bother with PS2 games, lol.
@JoeDiddley it didn’t run hot on PS4 too at launch as well.
So we should wait and see how the Switch runs it
I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS GAME
Oh my God, I played this game on PC and I loved it. I got the true ending but I never completed it to 100% completion even though I kinda wanted to. Maybe I'll pick this up again if it's a good price!
@anoyonmus I won’t preorder then and see how it pans out.
I think the Steam version did get an update?
So Square can port Nier on Switch.
But can’t put Kingdom Hearts 1.5 remix on Switch even though it is not as demanding as Nier.
Wow
When I first heard the rumours, I was like 'That's cool, but it'll probably just be a cloud version'. But NOPE. It looks like an actual native port which is awesome! I wouldn't play it personally (the amount of stuff for completion is insane) but I'm very happy for everyone here who adores Nier!
@JoeDiddley yeah it did.
In 2021 I think. Resolved most issues but not all.
AWESOME I have wanted to play this for years and did not want another console. I am beyond excited for this announcement. My first pre-ordered game!
I have my doubts how well this will run on a Switch. Heck it ran kinda poorly on a non-Pro PS4, and still looked kinda dodgy on a Pro. But still kinda cool.
I will absolutely be picking this up.
@CharlieGirl It looks good too! I'm glad development time was invested in this game rather than rushing it out
If this runs as well as it did in the direct, that's impressive and I'm getting it.
Such a good game, I might not double dip for it but I highly recommend it.
@NEStalgia Maybe it'll be like 13 Sentinels and run better on Switch.
This probably would have been the most exciting announcement for me if someone hadn't been posting rumors about it last night. So, uh, thanks for that.
Awesome games. I played the hell out of it when it released on Xbox A few years ago, so not double dipping. But if you haven’t played it, you’re in for a ride.
Hope it’s a good port!
looks kinda bland...
Yes! I thought I was finished with this game after that true ending on ps4. I think my heart and brain have recovered enough to do it all over again.
I cannot wait for this game! It provided such a powerful experience and fun experience.
Finally glad it was true, now hoping it will come physically.
AND IT'S NOT A CLOUD VERSION, LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Best announced entire Mini Direct
Wow they actually did it , i guess more games can be ported with the proper optimization
Welp, I have yet to open my xbox version so perhaps I will actually play this one.
Yep. I will be getting this one.
@Ralizah LOL, that would be hilarious actually.
Though, based on how the game was kinda janky until X1X, I think the thing is just a mess that needs to be brute forced. Unless they've moved to a whole new engine, which is possible.
Insta-buy... unless it's cloud streaming. In which case, no thank you.
are we sure the nier game is not a cloud version?
Sooo they could make this native but not Kingdom Hearts?
@johnedwin Yep: https://twitter.com/RPGSite/status/1541774977271181312
I believe in the Switch power, but i have my doubt on this one. the PS4, Xbox and even PS4 Pro versions where not running that good. even the Steam version doesnt. the best way to play this game is on XOX and XSX. lets hope switch version is well optimized but t would be shame if a fast paced game like this one its locked on 30fps like most probably will.
I'm shocked it's a native port. I mean, it's not the most next-gen looking game in the world, in terms of texture quality and geometry, but it's an intense action game with massive set pieces and I do wonder how it'll run on Switch.
If it runs well, pick it up. It's a masterpiece. Compared to other Platinum games, the combat isn't at the level of Bayonetta and Astral Chain, depth-wise, but then Nier's on another level entirely when it comes to atmosphere, storytelling, and overall experience, so... It balances out. And the combat isn't bad, either. It's just not top-tier (like Bayo).
I had not heard of this game up until today. I have long been interested in Astral Chain, and this may actually influence me to pick that game up or else just try this one out.
@sisodinr
I really like Astral Chain and the story's... fine. It's not bad. it works. But Nier: Automata is something else in terms of structure, pacing, spectacle, thematic depth, distinctive aesthetic, music, etc. So I would either get both, because they're both really good for different reasons, or get Nier. I wouldn't play Astral Chain instead of Nier: Automata.
Absolutely hype!
Switch now has Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, Bayonetta 3, Wonderful 101, Astral Chain and Nier Automata all on one hybrid handheld console.
Run that.
@Beaucine interesting, thank you!
@UltimateOtaku91
As I see it, at the time the GBC released (1998) it was big deal that the system was getting decent NES decade old ports, same thing for GBA with SNES. Gamers didn't buy Super Mario World, Earthworm Jim or Yoshi's Island on GBA because they were better superior versions, hell, most of the time the GBA versions was lacking in some way. Gamers got them because either a) they have never played them before, or b) they loved those games so much that the prospect of paying again to have those games in a portable system was a good deal.
So, getting all this ports even with a 5 year lapse is quite , many Nintendo regular owners have never played them and many multiplatform owners want to te play them in the toilet, so its all around good news.
Hopefully it will run as well as the PC port that they never fixed!
@sisodinr
Only word of caution: the director of Nier: Automata, Yoko Taro, is fond of pulling Kojima-level trolling here and there. You can really feel his hand playing with the game's structure and vibe. I love it, but keep the above in mind. Especially when you get to what seems like New Game+ and you appear to be playing the game over again, with some tweaks. That's true for an hour and two. And then it's not true anymore and you still have the best sequences in the game ahead of you. It's a ride, for sure.
@Beaucine Performance should be at the top of everyone’s mind. The PC port is still totally borked for many users, and it’s performance issues have been rectified by a fan-made patch that Switch owners will not be able to use if it’s still a broken mess. Definitely a wait and see, imo.
I literally SCREAMED seeing this. I’m glad I never gave up hope on it coming to Switch, I’m VERY excited to get this game.
Man, Squenix are weird when it comes to which games they will port or make cloud versions of.
Regarding Automata itself, I've not managed to convince myself to go back to it despite getting the first ending, It also doesn't help that I know most of the overarching story sadly. I kind of wish that if they went through all the effort for Automata, they they would of put Replicant on the Switch, which is fantastic and I cannot recommend enough.
@BloodNinja
Yep, I agree. I mean, other Platinum games run great on Switch, but they never get as crazy as Nier: Automata, not even Bayonetta 2. And the PC port... took some tinkering to work on my PC. I had to download a mod to fix the issues — which won't be a solution on Switch.
better not be cloud version or square will face an angry mob with pitchforks and torches coming for them.
This was a legitimately shocking reveal, doubly so because it looks like a native port rather than a cloud version.
Time to have an existential crisis on the go!
Super happy about Nier Automata. This and Persona 5 damn!!
@Beaucine getting straight through to the final ending of the game is such a trip. I feel awful for people who only beat it once and then thought they were done. It’s really only the beginning.
@itslukec Yeah, especially because it's no exaggeration to say that some of the best stuff in the game happens in the latter half — which is quite a feat, given that the first half of the game is already incredible. The repeated sections right in the middle are basically a cool-down session before the craziness picks back up.
People are still being cautious about a cloud version when the native port is already up for pre-order on the Square Enix store
While it's really cool to see Nier Automata get a true native port to Switch, I am rather curious how it will actually run on hardware in action...
Hmm, they quite delivered this partner Direct. Persona 4 and 5, Pacman world remake and finally Nier Automata. Nier Automata is a game I wanted to play for a long time, but I don't know if it will be this year. Huuuggge backlog!
SOLD! 100%! Wishes do come true!
Sweet! Definitely getting this.
Nier Automata on a a vanilla ps4 was not great in terms of performance. Cannot help but feel I will be reading reviews in the vein of Ninja Gaiden trilogy. Aims for 30fps but in reality…..
@Ralizah 1080p (Docked Mode)
720p (Portable Mode)
30 fps
But we have Cloud version of Kingdom Hearts games lol. Sometime, I can't understand Square Enix. But my god I'm so happy to have Automata on the Switch. I heard that the game engine of Automata was quite clunky on all platform, so I'm curious to know how they made this miracle. 😅
@johnedwin Don't fool yourself. This is an amazing instant classic.
The theme park level is amazing 😍
nier will run at 30fps on the switch from what i am reading i think i will pass..
@johnedwin it's a great game regardless where you play it. If you have a PS4 I highly recommend picking it up
This would look lovely in my collection. I probably wont play it as I have it for 2 other systems already but I'd love to buy this
@nib0 I'm a very happy camper after this news. It was so satisfying to get this right at the start of the Direct. I only hope we get a physical edition.
@nib0 Physical edition for has been confirmed.
@Bizzyb That's so awesome. The best-case scenario is that this sells well and we get a Nier Replicant port in the next 2 years. I've yet to play that one.
@Ulysses you mean in this comments section? Nah, we posted those concerns before the updated article confirmed a native port.
@LittleGhost
Then you're a dinosaur stuck in the past my friend. One who is easily persuaded by propaganda, fanboy narratives and nonsense. They (Nintendo) haven't teally had a problem with mature content, themes and such pretty much since Mortal Kombat 2 on the Snes. Heck, they were the only ones out of the three that didn't exactly censor that awful game BMX XXX. They also had you murdering people with motion controls in Manhunt 2. That along with having the more gory and graphic game. Honestly you'd find Microsoft and even more so Sony censoring more than Nintendo's been for a few years now. This isn't the 80's good sir/ma'am Lol
The game it was also available on the Xbox too if you didn't know.
If this actually runs well, it will be an instant purchase. The sole reason i bought a PS4.
@LittleGhost
What year are you living in? Nintendo games are often the raunchiest. Xenoblade 2 is a boob-fest, Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild let you cross-dress. A good chunk of the e-shop is made up of echhi and hentai. Mortal Kombat games haven't been censored on a Nintendo console in decades.
@solidox
yeah that is a concern i have in that while it aims for 30 whether or not it maintains that at a consistent rate is another story, it can sometimes feel like a roll of the dice when it comes to performance on switch when it comes to switch exclusives, let alone multiplatform which it why i always appreciate the good ports.
one of the reasons why i have been hoping that we see a switch upgrade in the future (hopefully when the chip shortage isnt as bad) is so it has a bit of a buffer when it comes to optimisation issues.
i am hoping that it ends up being a well optimised port and am fine with 30fps as long as its stable.
@Mgalens. Been scoping out some game footage. Suspect it will be dynamic resolution to keep things moving. Took a leap of faith and preordered a physical copy. At guess Square won’t want to Cyberpunk it. Have if PS5 but got kicked to the back of the queue. A truly unique game.
@solidox
yeah im happy with what we have seen so far, i often am cool with sacrificing some resolution for smoother gameplay.
definitely keeping my eye on this one.
