Square Enix's HD-2D remake of cult classic JRPG Live A Live is only a few months away, and the developer has been busy sharing a bunch of new screenshots and trailers from the upcoming game.
Live A Live is unique in that its story is spread across multiple different time periods. Each of these are distinct from one another, and you can play them in any order, but after beating these seven one last time period unlocks. Beat that, then a further final chapter becomes available.
Today, we can share with you a look at the first two time periods in the game - 'Prehistory' and 'Imperial China' - with two short trailers and a cacophony of screens!
Prehistory
"One of the various stories, “Prehistory” is a chapter where characters communicate not with dialogue, but with bold gestures and expressive movements. You will assume the role of Pogo, a young man who meets Beru, a young woman, and is subsequently drawn into a conflict with another tribe."
Imperial China
"One of the various stories, “Imperial China” tells the role of the Earthen Heart shifu, an old kung fu master who lives atop Mount Aspiration. The shifu has no heir, and so he fears that his martial knowledge will die with him. Thus does he resolve to venture forth in search of a worthy successor."
We've been waiting to see Live A Live in the west ever since its Super Famicom release back in 1994, and it looks like the 26-year wait is going to be worth it.

I'm so looking forward to this game. The whole HD-2D thing is right up my alley and this looks like it's going to be a ton of fun.
Love cave man
I literally just finished playing through the fan translation of the SNES original in preparation for this remake.
It's a pretty dang good RPG! Looking forward to the remake.
I’m really looking forward to this release, however, the price is steep compared to all other previous remaster by Squenix if the only new things are the graphics and qol changes. Is this a full on remake? What else has been changed? Does it “only” have the og SFC soundtrack or has it been re-arranged and recorded, what about gameplay fixes/improvemts? Any extra content?
Is this game an ARPG?
This looks pretty solid! Hope it's a test-the-waters type of game and sells well for Chrono Trigger with HD-2D
Dr.stone has a videogame. Nice.
This will probly look cool on a 3D tv.
@DashKappei Live a Evil is a remake
Can't wait to finally play this one.
i know i post it on every article but MAN the 2D-HD artstyle is weird looking
@Jackpaza0508 it's turn based but you move around on a grid basically
The Splash page for this made me think of Dr. Stone.
@Jackpaza0508
The game has turn-based, menu-based combat, but it takes place on a grid you can freely walk around. (though walking too much can use up your turn). It's rather unique.
i was happy at the first but .... it's look like a light treatment of 2dHD.
What bothers me with this game is the same problem I had with octopath, the characters you play as are all disconnected from each other and you can’t continue to build on them. Octopath was pretty good still but I’d rather have an rpg where you don’t take off and leave one party for another.
@TYRANACLES
Yeah, if you're really into character building and character progression, then Live A Live doesn't really offer this that much. This game asks the player to make decisions thinking directly about the in-the-moment situation, rather than focusing on any kind of long-term goals. It's just a different style of RPG, you know?
I'm getting this game for sure, man squareenix is on a roll on switch lately with octopath, triangle strategy, and now this. I really hope squareenix remake ff6 with 2D-HD engine next 😃
Imperial China was my favorite chapter. The music is so good
Oh man, I think this is the best looking 2D-HD has ever looked as of yet. The bit more fantastical and colourful style of Live-a-Live really works for it. Easily one of my most anticipated games, the original was a masterpiece and I have a hard time believing they can do this wrong.
I would recommend buying this game simply to wait 2 to 3 years and it will be worth double maybe triple the price
Nice! Have never gotten to play this.
@DashKappei definitely a ground up remake with high production value. I saw it for 40€ new, so it's under the usual new retail price.
The premise for this somewhat reminds me of the earlier chapters of Dragon Quest IV, but on a grander scale. I really enjoyed that game and expect this will be a fun ride as well.
I still cant believe this is happening
I like how this game is basically Chrono Trigger except you don't time travel to these locations but play their story of that era instead. If Chrono Trigger did not had time travel we'll be playing separate chapter as Crono, Frog, Magus, Ayla, and Robo.
Looking real good. Can't wait!
I'm so hyped for this game! I can't wait!
I pass on most square games. They're not bad by any means, just don't get my attention that much. This one, however, looks interesting. I thought I had already heard of every obscure 16-bit rpg, but no.
FINALLY. I've been telling people to play this game for 2/3 of my actual life and the "I don't pirate games" crowd will have easy access. Fantastic!
