@daff3ww : I don't have any clue if it's a console or a Valve type system or whatever. I'm just hoping it's something where digital purchases transfer over.
Nintendo cannot be eyeing the prospect of digital downloads as a driving force until they establish an account system. They need to speak on this soon. Will these purchases carry over to the next Nintendo platform? Allowing access like that allows for more DLC, more Amiibo, and more trust with the Nintendo gamer.
Looks wonderful. I'm considering going digital on this one. The outline of the Nintendo account system should be in effect by December, and I'm expecting some type of big overhaul...as in digital purchases will carry over to the next device, i.e. NX. And for the collectors edition going almost 100 dollars is nothing. Considering the amount of work put into these games, that should be a standard price considering prices haven't gone up the last 20 or so years.
I had mentioned this with Amiibo a long while back essentially using a Wilt Chamberlain Amiibo for nba 2k to lure those third party games back to the console. The next best thing is use of the independent developers for this, and if the toys look as good as Shovel Knight, I'm more than willing to purchase not only the figure but the game. This has grabbed my attention far more than any first party Amiibo other than the anniversary Mario.
Very, very good week. If they could drop stuff like this one week a month, that would be great. I thought the Wii U was marching to a slow death, but it feels like there are more games coming out now than before. If they could announce some sort of account based system and Club Nintendo system, that would really hook gamers to stay around.
@Cyber-BLP-- : interesting points. Today's audience is spoiled to the fact that a lot of work goes into the majority of games, and these artists have to be paid. Steam waters down the collective audience expectation. And with the internet and social media, God forbid an artist, developer or publisher open their mouth, they end up lambasted and alienated.
@shigulicious : Really? Usually AMC has Destiny commercials all night long. That's surprising. This Mario commercial was excellent. Wow, Nintendo is actually pushing their stuff!
I just looked at the bundle one more time, and I have to say, that is an excellent deal for a new Wii U owner. I wonder if it will push a significant new audience to pick it up....
@FreakFerrett : I assume Nintendo will talk about this very situation, and an account based system in a Direct in the Fall. Nintendo isn't Valve, so everything could just go away.
@NintyMan : I'm fascinated by what Starfox might be. The game looks sparse from what I've seen, but if it's their major holiday monster, there must be a lot they are not showing.
Ridiculous and baffling. Great way to announce it where 2 people might notice outside of Nintendo fans. And they're treating the Wii U as if it's dead, with their announcement of the NX. I love Nintendo, but things seem the same as ever.
Any employee that signs a contract needs to know their role. This firing, was unfortunately for him and his family justified. Nintendo is iron clad with their employees. Especially, in the digital age, this type of stuff could be taken way out of context and affect Nintendo. I'm sure a few shareholders and higher ups were alerted to this, and said initiate the termination asap. Again, unfortunate, but you have to know better.
@Mus1cLov3r : Most of the people complaining in general on message boards are a small minority of actual owners. And it's usually folks that regret their purchase.
I want Pandoras Tower....but I'm still waiting for the unified account system/Club Nintendo replacement. It's tough purchasing anything knowing the NX is coming and that they may just drop the Wii U with no carry over of these purchases, more so due to the amount of digital purchases I made. I'm not falling into a PS3 situation again.
This sort of talk from a CEO is all fluff. There are no new ways of playing with a smartphone. But there is a great way to lure the drones that play all the free games. Give them Super Mario Bros 3, and have them advance to a certain stage at which point the player feels superior. Then bam! Drop an Advertisement with a printable coupon for a new Wii U for 300 dollars.
Nintendo sure is confusing. NOA seems to have given up on the Wii U, yet he's talking about Super Mario Maker and Starfox....uh, what? Where's the Super Mario Maker Amiibo bundle? Console bundle? Where's the new unified account system and Club Nintendo? And Reggie mentioned they were transition. Moffitt almost sounds like there is no NX, or he doesn't know about it...which sounds more plausible.
What a total load of garbage. I work six days a week, with Sunday off, and they have this at the worst possible time. For the first time, I actually want these amiibos, but they will be snatched up by people with lots of time and no responsibility. I have no respect for this type of stuff with Nintendo. They are appealing to the hardcore out there that can find time to go to stores and line up for these things.
@Discostew : That's true about Gamestop exclusivity. I wonder if there is any way to allow hard copy users the ability to use the game on the gamepad. Staying in topic though, no way I see anything like a steelbook or bundle being announced in the U.S. They have said Jack squat about the Super Mario Maker Amiibo bundle. Europe is their worst market and they're getting all the incentives? Man, NOA doesn't want me to purchase anything.
I was in gamestop picking up Rare Replay, and the gamestop saleswoman said something big was happening Saturday and she was opening an hour earlier. I work every day except Sunday. So I gave up on following up that. So I asked her about a Super Mario Maker Amiibo bundle. She said they have yet to hear about that and I was added to a long list of folks inquiring about this! Nintendo makes things way too hard. I'm an adult with a job and an actual life. I don't have the time to check back for stuff like this. It's as if Nintendo is appealing some unemployed, hardcore collector with nothing better to do. Ridiculous.
@MrWarner14 : I agree about emulation and all this torrent downloading. If you want to access something, from movie, games to music, I always believe in rewarding the artist. Especially for games. Rare Replay is a great way around this, since they have developers diaries, video commentaries, and an overall improved presentation.
@VanillaLake : You're speaking to the choir! Preach on! Many of those N64 games from Rare were just so polished and ridiculously good. Microsoft has said they will likely have DLC ready for this. Can you imagine a cleaned up Goldeneye? Or one of their many licensed games, which I'm sure Microsoft will pay for. Yeah, I do miss those times with my N64, before friends passed away or moved on. If I can even feel a little of that for a moment, I'm good.
@VanillaLake : I'm very impressed that Rare has worked to actually improve the visuals on some of these games. Again, 30 games for 30 dollars. Great deal.
@ottospooky : I agree with your harsh reply. Why blame Microsoft or their fan base? All I know is I'm going to be playing this game and the planned DLC which could be a lot of classic gems.
This is one of the huge reasons I got an Xbox One. Also the upcoming Elite controller. The upcoming 3rd party games. And the upcoming backwards compatibility. The Rare Replay is as Reggie Fils-Aime "a great value." Also, this opinion piece notes how this should be on a Nintendo console. I hate to say this but most of the folks that originally played these games moved on to Microsoft and Sony a long time ago. All my friends went from the N64 to the Xbox. It took me 15 years, but I finally did too. It's ridiculous to insinuate that current Nintendo console owners deserve this, when in reality the original fans have long moved on. Get real.
These Dragon Quest games take a long time to come out. NX or the Ultimate Super Nintendo Entertainment system might come in 2017 after all. The other thing I noticed though is that the NX could be as potent as PS4 or weak as the 3DS. Guaranteed hybrid. I'm a corporate magician!
Well the new system needs a name. Something ridiculous, like the Ultimate Nintendo Entertainment system. For me, they could release Smash, Kart, whatever at launch, I'd be very hesitant to purchase. The way they killed the N64, the cube, the Wii, and now Wii U, why would any of those previous customers trust them? They keep losing customers each generation, with the Wii being an exception. They need to earn trust at this point. I'm sorry, but I can only stomach so many platformers. Only so much Nintendo mascot themed games. Anyone saying they don't need EA, Ubisoft, or any of these 3rd parties is smoking something. No home console will survive without the yearly Madden, or NBA 2K, and even Assassins Creed at this point. And they need variety. What happened to Eternal Darkness? What happened to their rich back catalogue? They can't talk to Disney to give us Aladdin from back in the day? They can't talk to WWE and work out an online No Mercy? They can't come to an agreement with Microsoft about Goldeneye 64? Again, they have a ton of work to do.
Nintendo shoulders the majority of the blame here. They have created a console fan base that cares little for 3rd parties. How many people would have bought something like Dark Souls or NBA 2K on the Wii U. Probably too few, since no one would realize these games would be coming out on the system. I just recently bought an Xbox One, and I'm enjoying Tomb Raider and NBA 2K15 as we speak. I have Halo 1-4 bundled with the system and yet to play plus Rare Replay ( 30 games!) reserved. I may not need another console from Nintendo for a very very long time.
@BulbasaurusRex : You're right, Gargoyles is Buena Vista I think. I'm sorry, but I would literally eat my shoe if Goliath and the whole group showed up....
Takeda is my lead choice due to his deep involvement in the company's hardware. Miyamoto is an odd choice. He would actually be the best of both worlds in a way. As CEO, he could watch over every game and put his two cents in all the time. But, I know jack about corporate stuff, and the inner workings of a corporation. My hope is Nintendo is able to recapture the magic they had.
@TheRealThanos : I just purchased an xbox one a few weeks ago. I got the 1TB version with Halo 1-4 bundled with it and a free year of Gold. Some of the bundles are great value. And the upcoming game list looks in my opinion the best of the year. Rare Replay has 30 legit games coming. As a Nintendo fan that definitely caught my eye and caused me to move towards a purchase. I don't know what you're into, but they have a Madden bundle arriving with a free year of EA Access mid August, and a Gears of War bundle at the end of August. Microsoft is providing the best value with a great amount of games moving into next year. I cannot say that about Nintendo and even Sony right now or in 2016.
NintendoLife and its community has been so respectful of Iwata the past 24hours. Very well done to all the users, and authors. Iwata would be overwhelmed with the love we've shown.
@sonicmeerkat : I wouldn't worry about that at all. Nintendo was built with Hiroshi Yamauchi's family and their ideas, morals, and justifying value to the customer. That train of thought pervades all of nintendo from top to bottom. Just read any random interviews with Miyamoto, or the numerous developers. I'll miss Iwata deeply, and I'm sure his fingerprints will be on whatever's coming next, because of his involvement with all concercing NX, and QOL.
Wonderful article. Iwata was vital to gaming as a whole. I cannot even wonder what comes for them next considering I had really begun backing away from Nintendo since E3. Now, I'm going to hold onto my Wii U, and just wait and watch. I hope whatever it is with QOL, NX, and DeNA that Iwata set up leaves a legacy that will only be added upon in the future. Rest well Iwata.
@Nintendofan83 : Yes, his dedication was unparalleled. If only most individuals took their job that seriously, life would be much better. Just a sad day today.
They already lost me as a future customer. I haven't purchased anything new on my Wii U since January, I think. Otherwise, with the NX it would be nice to see certain things. A unified account system. Virtual console games from Atari 2600 and the Commodore to the Dreamcast and gamecube. And not first party garbage, but actual 3rd party stuff. Find a way to pay up for the licenses for games like Turok or Superman vs Doomsday. I mean, they've already sucked the fans money this generation. A huge de emphasis on Mario and the like. I want to see newer and dormant franchises. Eternal Darkness? A controller similar to the Xbox one elite controller to really with games from different gens. It would be nice to see 3rd parties, but they're really never coming back unless Nintendo is willing to pay out of their pocket. All of these things would me make me stop and consider the system. But due to the inconsistency and incompetence throughout Nintendo I would realize they would drop the ball at some point after I purchased. As in abandoning the system. As in trickling releases. As in the lack of diversity ( no sports, too many platformers). No, they could provide all the good stuff I mentioned, and there would be a small chance of purchase. I'm Microsoft though, since last holiday they have been beefing up the console. I think the Xbox One may be coming my way sooner rather than later.
