It's time for another Nintendo Download Update, and this time around we have an 'Operation Rainfall' arrival on the Wii U eShop alongside a runner, while on 3DS we have tank battling and a few other options. There are also a load of discounts thrown in, so let's get to the details.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update earlier in the week? Fret not! The details are all right here.
Wii U eShop
Pandora's Tower (XSEED Games, $19.99) - Originally the third part of the 'Operation Rainfall' trilogy of games on the Wii, this was also the darkest and most surreal of those offerings. An action title with some light exploration elements, you're tasked with obtaining the hearts of beasts to give to the cursed Elena; it's a rather disturbing premise but an intriguing experience, though it's not without flaws. You can get the lowdown in our Pandora's Tower review.
Wind-up Knight 2 (Unity Games, $7.50) - This is a runner in which you swing your sword, jump, roll and use your shield to survive; titles of this type can potentially be fun, of course, and along with unlockable outfits etc this Wii U version also has a multiplayer mode. We'll see whether this is noble and chivalric or just a bit of a wind up in our review.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
TNT Racers - Nitro Machines Edition (Keen Games, $4.99 until 8:59am Pacific on 13th August, normally $7.99)
Blocky Bot (Mobot Games, on discount until 27th August)
Paper Monsters Recut (Mobot Games, on discount until 27th August)
Jeopardy! (Nordic Games, on discount until 27th August)
Wheel of Fortune (Nordic Games, on discount until 27th August)
Bombing Bastards (Sanuk Games, on discount until 20th August)
Spot the Differences: Party! (Sanuk Games, on discount until 20th August)
Stone Shire (Finger Gun Games, $5.99 until 1st October, normally $7.99)
Suspension Railroad Simulator (Joindots, on discount until 27th August)
3DS eShop
Brave Tank Hero (Natsume, $4.99) - Released on 11th August, this is a 3D action game developed by Arc System Works; across 50 missions you take on other tanks and shoot for high rankings. You can choose from multiple tank types, and we'll see whether this hits its mark or loses its tracks in our review.
Best of Arcade Games - Bubble Buster (Bigben Interactive, $9.99) - This series continues with another self-explanatory title, this time offering 50 levels in an Adventure mode; it's just about competent, but we were critical of it in our review.
Best of Arcade Games - Air Hockey (Bigben Interactive, $9.99) - Another in this line of releases, this time promising 20 challenges within a simple game; it's just a pity it's not very good.
3DS Retail Download
Garfield Kart (Humongous Entertainment, $29.99) - Oh dear.
Paddington: Adventures in London (Humongous Entertainment, $29.99)
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Nano Assault EX (Shin'en Multimedia, $7.49 until 3rd September, normally $9.99)
Excave II: Wizard of the Underworld (Bergsala Lightweight, $5 until 20th August, normally $10)
Talking Phrasebook - 7 Languages (Sanuk Games, on discount until 20th August)
Van Helsing sniper Zx100 (EnjoyUp Games, $3.49 until 10th September, normally $6.66)
Alien on the Run (G-style, on discount until 27th August)
Undead Storm Nightmare (G-style, on discount until 27th August)
Jump Trials Supreme (G-style, on discount until 27th August)
3D Game Collection (Joindots, on discount until 27th August)
Murder on the Titanic (Joindots, on discount until 27th August)
3DS eShop Demo
I Love My Dogs (Bigben Interactive, free)
That's everything for North America this week - let us know what you plan to download in the poll and comments below.

I am so jazzed to finally play Pandora's Tower.
absolutely nothin,,,,
In before storm of "another terrible week" comes all revved up!
anyone recommend Pandora's tower at $20?... only game from the trilogy I didn't picked up...
Undead storm is a fun little grinding game, at a cheap price it might be worth your while.
@arrmixer I never got to finish it, but I would recommend it. If it has gamepad functionality, that would be even better.
Cool, another Wii game. I want it.
Does anyone know whether or not Pandora's Tower still retains that game-ending glitch?
Thinking of PT. Also, do not get that phrase book. It is horrible.
I patiently await 3d Gunstar Heroes.
I think this will be the week I buy Kirby's Return to Dreamland. Nice to get Pandora's Tower for the fans who have been interested in it, but it's not for me.
Is Xenoblade Chronicles coming to the North American eshop too?
Yikes! I have Pandora's Tower on disc. Not interested in "runner" games. So there is literally nothing for me. Usually I grab whatever token VC game is there. Not this week! It's getting a little scary.
Pandora's Tower... finally. Omg, this was stupidly slow getting her. I can Finally play that game. I don't care about anything else, Pandora's Tower made this week worth it for me.
@arrmixer It's not part of a trilogy. It's a standalone game. This has nothing to do with Operation Rainfall.
Nothing for me this week, but nice to see another Wii game. Still haven't gotten the Kirby one, and I have Pandora on disk.
@ThomasBW84 What's the price es for Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy?
@abbyhitter It's the third game from Operation Rainfall after Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story.
The 3DS eShop is on life support at this point. Maybe I'll get Pandora's Tower cause it looks interesting
Wait, I thought Pandora's Tower was an RPG. If it's an "action title with light exploration elements" I'm not really interested.
Call me crazy...but Garfield Kart all the way baby.
We want Xenoblade, what are you doing NoA
Dear spoiled brats who think that they need a new game each week, and that if you don't like anything, it's "a terrible week,"
Stop—please; stop spamming the forums with "it's a terrible week," week after week. If you don't find anything interesting, go on with your business, instead of complaining about everything.
Sincerely,
Everyone
(This might be flagged by a moderator, but I don't care—this needed to be said.)
Hm. Pandoras Tower looks like a cool addition but I'm not sure it's my kind if game personally. Glad to see the VC library grow a little on Wii U though. The 3DS VC has been abandoned. At least Sonic 2 is coming next month. It'd a shame since Nintendo has so much they could be doing with the VC right now.
Wow. The poll this week is almost 50/50. That's crazy. I admit it's not a real good week, but I dunno. A couple of those Wii U discount games are pretty good...
Wow! Getting Pandora's Tower... Didn't think that would even get released here
Where's the VC releases!?!?!?
Finally, Pandora's Tower but why don't we get the other wii titles that are released on other wii u regions.
I may download Pandora's Tower since I never played it (or any of the Operation Rainfall trio). Wish I didn't have a backlog of games to complete.
Pandora here I come.
Nothing for me, but maybe I'll get PT later on
@Mus1cLov3r Well said. I don't mind if they say it as a opinion (ex. nothing for me this week or they don't release any game I want) but not as a statement of fact (ex. nothing good is ever in the eshop).
@Mus1cLov3r People complaining about people complaining there is nothing this week is just as bad. Think about that.
I want Pandoras Tower....but I'm still waiting for the unified account system/Club Nintendo replacement. It's tough purchasing anything knowing the NX is coming and that they may just drop the Wii U with no carry over of these purchases, more so due to the amount of digital purchases I made. I'm not falling into a PS3 situation again.
These games are freaking horrible. When will the 3ds bounce back with something worth owning again? And I won't comment on Wii U's super lackluster content.
@Mus1cLov3r
Yet another post complaining about complaining. Lmao.
Intrigued by Pandora's Tower, but currently too deep into Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and some other time sucks to justify the purchase. I'll probably add it to my wishlist for someday when I'm feeling some super Japanese oddness.
@Mus1cLov3r There's nothing! What you want us to say?
@Barbiegurl777 Complaining about everything week after week, saying, "Gah, nothing good ever comes to the eShop!" isn't an opinion, and it's getting really old. Who are they to say it's a terrible week, simply because they don't like something?
@Tasuki I'm "complaining" because I'm getting sick and tired of these spoiled brats finding it necessary to complain about the status of the eShop, week after week, month after month—it's gotten old.
It is amazing I managed to get all three "Operation Rainfall" games as Wii discs at the earliest, despite my financial status at the time.
@TwilightAngel There's 7 new games, this week alone; last I checked, that's more than nothing. If you don't find any of 'em interesting, play something, or do something else altogether.
@k8sMum You have to bring something to light if you want it to change. And before you say, "That's what they're doing," or something like that, it's completely different circumstances: NoA doesn't read NintendoLife comments—I assure you—so complaining about the eShop solves nothing. Those who complain about the eShop—on the other hand—are much more likely to read the comments, so they'll hopefully see that people are annoyed by their complaints, and stop. Unlikely? Sure; but it's worth a shot.
@kensredemption Yeah, that's a better word.
@Mus1cLov3r : Most of the people complaining in general on message boards are a small minority of actual owners. And it's usually folks that regret their purchase.
No vc this week. Would've been a good time to release Zero Mission or any of the other vc games that NA has yet to see.
It's not even funny how much NOA sucks nowadays.
@Mus1cLov3r
Ah, calling anyone who disagrees with you a spoiled brat is a great way to start. Name calling always works in a positive way.
I remember being young and self-righteous. Grew out of it.
Can't really buy anything anyways...so...yeah. >.>
Nothing wrong with complaining about a crappy week people. There is absolutely no reason for zero vc releases. It's not like NOA has all the responsibility that NOJ has.
If people just passively excepted everything a company did the Xbox one would still be bundled with kinect.
Anyone know if Pandora's Tower has gamepad support? If it does I might be interested eventually. Otherwise, there is nothing this week I am overly interested in.
@Mus1cLov3r The frustration is that the eShop is a mess and a bit of a joke when it comes to the Virtual Console. Currently North America is over 100 Virtual Console games (182 vs 327) behind Japan. While there are some games that just never made it over here, there are others like NES & SNES Final Fantasy games and Metroid; Zero Mission that have no good excuse to not release. Then there is the absence of the Turbo Graphics-16 library from the US Virtual Console, especially considering their availability still in the Wii Shop.
Finally for people like me, there are Wii games that we are interested in purchasing but don't want to pay a insane markup on the used copy. For example, I want to play Skyward Sword since I missed it but I cannot bring myself to pay $50 for a game that eventually will hit the eShop for $20.
But hey, we get the privilege of paying $7.50 for a game that is free on Android and iOS.
@Mus1cLov3r New games? Like Best of Arcade Games - Air Hockey? Wheel of Fortune? Jeopardy? Garfield Kart? Suspension Railroad Simulator? And more. Yes these games are so amazing. What an amazing week thanks big N! Get out of here! 7 new games only of one them are actually worth your time,and i already have it.
I own Pandora's Tower physically and it rocks!!! Get it! Another rocking Wii game on the eShop! About time!!!
Nothing for me this week...
@ricklongo it is RPG, like level and such
Excave 2 for 5$.
At 10$, I passed.
At 5$, I'll play.
I'm not scrounging for pennies or worried about making rent.
Anyone who can't find anything to play should save that unused money and buy a PS4 or X1. That way, there's at least something for them every week and then maybe some positivity will come back to the Nintendo communities.
@ricklongo it's an action RPG. It has all the standard RPG elements like leveling up, equipping stuff, etc... But it does focus on the action side a lot. Still, a great game.
If I wasn't busy paying off a debt, I'd buy PT. It's the first Wii download that supports the GamePad in America. On that note, it's about time we started getting more Wii games on Wii U! Let's hope we don't have to wait until next year for Xenoblade Chronicles.
Nothing doing besides Pandora's tower. And maybe Jump Trials.
What's Happening with the 3DS VC?
@OneBagTravel I was wondering the same thing!
@eaglebob345 @arronishere
Thanks for the info!
@kensredemption
Who wanna pay 250$ for an inferior version (plus I already have the regular 3DS)
Pandora Tower is easy to find for à pretty cheap price in comparison with Xenoblade.
I have a question for PT tho... Better with or w/o the wiimote+nunchuk combo ?
Hey Nintendo LIfe, can you guys have a stickied article that lists all current WiiU and 3DS eshop games on sale at any given time? That would be nice, especially if it has their price listings like you have here, an with the sale's end date.
Oh, and buy Pandora's Tower people. It's a great game.
Nice. I like the cheap Wii games.
@Mus1cLov3r I am one of those "Everyone" so I approve of your message.
I'm going to get Pandora's Tower again just even though I have the physical copy. Yes it makes no sense.
As long as I can play it with just the gamepad I will be getting PANDORA'S TOWER. Waiting patiently for DEVIL'S THIRD.
Looks like Pandora's Tower for me this week. Like a lot of people, I missed it when it originally released. Intrigues me enough to download...plus it's really the only option.
HowLongToBeat says about 20-25 hours, so that's perfect.
@GabSt Are you comfortable with using pointer controls while playing? If so, I would recommend it. If grabbing the star bits in Mario Galaxy was frustrating, go classic controller or gamepad.
Glad to see Nintendo has more digital games. They should have been doing this last gen. If only we didn't have to boot into Wii mode, but I guess that's the price of backwards compatibility. I'm getting this game. Also, I feel it's a fair price.
Pandora's Tower for me, I can't resist owning Wii games digitally
I thought those Sega 3D Classics were releasing this week, or, at least one of them anyways... Aug 16th, that date brings a bell. I thought for SURE there was a Sega 3D Classic due. Wow I must be losing it
Sickly child: "Father, will Nintendo ever release anymore Virtual Console games for the 3DS?, I do love them so...'cough, cough'"
Concerned Parent " I don't know little one, I just don't know...." silently cries inside.
@JaxonH Your not the only one. I thought Gunstar Heroes was out today. Maybe next week.
I'd love to pickup Pandora's Tower, but the disk version goes for practically the same price online. I might hold off for a sale to grab the digital version. Pandora's Tower, The Last Story, and Xenoblade Chronicles are all games I would love to pickup. If Xenoblade Chronicles comes to the eShop anytime soon, it will be a day one pickup for me.
Obligatory "eShop Gets No Games" comment.
With that out of the way, Pandora's Tower is a welcome sight, considering the scarcity Wii release. It fits well with the general theme for retail Wii games on the eShop, games that never became easy and/or cheap to get as the years went on. I wouldn't put it on par with Metroid Prime Trilogy or Return to Dream Land in terms of demand, but it is still welcome.
Besides that, the discounts on the Wii U are interesting. Bombing Bastards and Block Bot look interesting. And although the 3DS has a worse week, it really hasn't been that bad for the 3DS eShop. Over the past few weeks, we've gotten Streets of Rage 2 3D, Dragon Fantasy, Dr Mario, and AVGN Adventures.
Where's Xenoblade Chronicles this week?! I was hoping we'd get it here in the U.S. I wanna play it again sooooo bad! 😞
I'm somewhat excited about I Love My Dogs for 3DS but I'm going to hold out for the rest of the series so I can pick it up in a compilation with I Wish I Got Cats Instead, I'm So Over My Dogs, and What Was I Thinking When I Got More Than One Dog?
Darksiders ii Is on sale this week for 9.99. Worth it??
@Cyberbotv2 considering that your Wii games were transferable to Wii U, I would think you were in good hands.
@Mus1cLov3r And people like you complaining about the complainers is getting just as old. They have every right to complain just like you do. Why don't you take you own advice and just move on if they annoy you so much. Talk about the pot calling the kettle.
And calling people spoiled brats is going to make them stop huh?
@Mus1cLov3r I'm sure NOA doesn't bother looking for fan feedback on various sites. I don't think they give a hoot about what fan's think or want.
Zero for me, but it's not worth my time complaining when I have tons of backlogged stuff to play. If I hadn't played Pandora's Tower, I would be downloading that, cause flaws or not, it's definitely worth a play if you like that type of game-- highly recommended. Other than that, hope everyone else has a backlog. Happy gaming
Still no Xenoblade, so nothing for me this week.
Does Pandora's Tower have gamepad support? Is that why its twice as expensive as the other three Wii VC games in NA?
Holy moly, they aren't even trying anymore!
@DiscoGentleman I'd like to think they do.
Like many others, disappointed to not see Xenoblade this week.
@DiscoGentleman
naïveté...I'm not sure the word means what you think it does. Was I indirectly name calling or behaviour calling? Is that self righteous in itself?
Ah,well, none of this matters anyway in the scheme of things. Peace out.
No Xenoblade. For shame, NoA. Back to playing it on my PC, I guess.
@ZachBeacon every other Wii game is $19.99 (there were 4 of them). The $9.99 was only a promotional pricing for the first 3 on their first week.
Can anyone confirm that the game breaking bug is still present or not? (Pandora's Tower)
I'm sorry but I don't understand people who emulate Wii games if Wii games are still present in retailers...I don't care if Xenoblade Cheonicles is somewhat expensive get a job or save up gez.. Same goes to Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn. I get so sick of seeing people emulating the game on Twitch
I guess the tank game for 3ds doesn't have any multiplayer options +sadface+
Definitely Paddington Bear, that's going to be awesome, I heard that it has awesome HD graphics too!
No Wii U VC games this week? damn...
@SheldonRandoms
No week with an Operation Rainfall eShop release can be considered a bad week.
@Mus1cLov3r The more people get, the more they will complain when they perceive they aren't getting something. And when you call them out on it, they blame you. See: this comment section.
@Mus1cLov3r
Thank you, there might of only been a couple of times I've said that myself but I too am annoyed by this.
Sega, only you & your 3D classics can save us.
@Dr_Corndog
Yes, it's our fault that Nintendo won't support the Virtual Console.
Nintendo must to do an update to let the Wii disc that offer in download to be playable in gamepad without need to download the digital version. It is possible but Nintendo is lazy. We can play all Wii games in gamepad if they do this update.
@DarkEdi Not to be an armchair developer here, but it is far more complicated than that. Wii games run in a near 1:1 copy of the Wii's original Operating System, even limiting system specs down to what the Wii had. The Wii's OS nor its games are even aware the Wii U or its peripherals exist. If there is a way, it would require a LOT of time and effort.
@Crono1973 Are you actively trying to prove my point? Or is the irony just lost on you?
@Dr_Corndog Looking back at the wii, it's not hard to see why so many are underwhelmed this generation.
I'd recommend TnT Racers at this price.... One of my favorite little games...
@k8sMum I call things like I see them: anyone who exepects to get stuff they want every week is a spoiled brat. I'm not self-righteous—I know my flaws, and I know I'm far from righteous.
@TwilightAngel Many people will enjoy those games; just because you aren't interested in a game, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
@Tasuki If you keep doing something annoying (i.e, being a spoiled brat that complains the eShop week after week), and no one lets you know how annoying it is, you keep doing it; with that in mind, if a spoiled brat figures out that people see them as a spioled brat, they may stop being one.
@Mus1cLov3r I don't complain every week. I just call it like I see it. NOA is probably the weakest branch of the company. I can assure you it took more than a lack luster vc for me to loose all faith in NOA.
@crzysortagamer
Yes, it comes with the early DLC for the game but the later never came out on Wii U, That DLC didn't add much to the story and was more about chances at better weapons/armor so it's nothing to worry about.
I really like seeing Nintendo support Wii titles on the eShop. It might take a while to grow the library, but hey, it's a start!
@DarkEdi It's just not possible. There is no real OS on the system. Unlike your computer or other systems, each game and app provides the necessary drivers (known as IOS modules) for interacting with the system, whether it's for a specific set of controllers, access to the WiFi for internet connectivity, etc. It's the system's way of not bloating up memory requirements. The Wii System Menu is nothing more than an app for navigating the system, that gets unloaded when another game/app launches, and gets reloaded when that app/game gets unloaded. When you press the HOME button, you're not seeing a background process running. You're seeing a menu built into the game/app. These drivers on the game discs cannot be changed or replaced for obvious reasons.
The reason why Wii digital titles on Wii U can be launched from and exit to Wii U menu, use the Gamepad as a controller, and be stored on Wii U's internal storage or ext HDD is because these drivers it has were altered to be able to recognize the Wii U. They still run under Wii mode for compatibility reasons.
The closest thing to allowing Wii game discs to run in the same manner as Wii digital titles, imo, would be to make individual Wii U "loader" apps that contain the altered drivers for the specific game it is meant to load, and launch the game that way. Of course, because each game has its own collection of drivers that aren't necessarily the same as another game, they couldn't really make a universal loader.
@TheRavingTimes that is the #1 question. XSeed never figured out what caused the Tower 11 glitch!
@Nico07 Don't buy the disk version of PT if you're in NA, since it has the unpredictable Tower 11 glitch which completely crashes the Wii and requires a hard reset. I would wait to see if they fixed that in the downloadable version.
I haven't downloaded anything from the eShop in weeks except Streets of Rage 2. I can't even think of a physical 3DS game I'm interested in all that much. Maybe Animal Crossing or DBZ. So far, I don't see a reason to pick up a New 3DS XL either.
No VC... again
Bunch of idiots and spoiled little nintendo princesses cannot accept that @Mus1cLov3r has hit the nail on the head. If you don't like something don't buy it. Instead you complain every week when the announcement comes... classy. I bet you blame Nintendo for your your welfare internet.
@AsianDomination Im sure a multi billion dollar company needs you to defend them.
Try having your New 3ds that you bought at launch not work properly. Try waiting from February till June to get it fixed. Only thing is NOA said they couldn't find the problem with my 3ds. I even had a manager ask me stop calling after the fourth repair.
The problem was a defective sd card. NOA has a repair team of individuals who's intelligence far exceeds my own and they couldn't find the problem. A problem the repair team apparently couldn't find on their own even though checking the Sd card for defects is part of the repair process. NOA just kept sending me a new 3dd unit with the same defective card in tow.
NOA is a joke for more reasons than just a lousy DL week.
@Superryanworld No one's defending Nintendo; we're simply addressing a problem—people complaining every single week.
@Mus1cLov3r
So really, what you are saying is that if we have nothing good to say then we should say nothing at all?
Why not though right, it's not like Nintendo care what people think of the eShop, apparently.
@Crono1973 No, not at all. I'm saying that if you're gonna complain every time something bad happens, you should give credit when something good happens.
You people seem to forget one small fact: Nintendo—like nearly every other company out there—are in it for the money, not to please you. Boo-hoo, you're bored with your thousandth game, but there's not another game that interests you this week—get over it.
@Mus1cLov3r
Oh goody, the "they are a business" defense. Nevermind, I'm done.
@Crono1973 Good for you. You—like half of those that responded to my original comment—can't handle the truth.
Yeah, I don't think 7 bucks trade-in is a good reason to get rid of my physical copy of Pandora's Tower. That's cool for people who haven't played it before, though. I know I did the same thing for the first three Wii games that were released on the US eShop.
I am curious about Wind-Up Knight and Brave Tank Hero, though. The former reminds me about an old Sega Saturn game I've wanted to play for a while, and I'm always a fan of tank games... too bad I have SO MUCH TO PLAY on 3DS. I keep buying games for it even though I know the only thing I'm gonna play is Monster Hunter.
If I didn't already have Pandora's Tower for Wii, I would be buying it. I do hope this means The Last Story and Xenoblade Chronicles comes to the US eShop. I'd buy them both.
