You don't need a PC for that, MAME has been ported to the Switch and it runs great.
FWIW the original Crazy Taxi for Dreamcast is a blast in handheld mode and is another example of a great game that will absolutely positively never get a legal option in Switch.
To contrast complaints with the FPS issues, it should be said that the controls feel really excellent and are a big improvement over the Game Boy game's controls.
@Balta666 The Switch hardware was revised around June '18 and no major exploits for that revision have been made public, and they won't be made public until Nintendo releases another hardware revision that fixes those exploits or someone leaks the details of the exploit. Whether those exploits even exist or not is only truly know by a handful of individuals.
It's not any worse, it's exactly as bad as it's always been. Unpatched Switches, which is every switch made before June of 2018, are all vulnerable to the same exploit and there is nothing Nintendo can do about that, other than to block those Switches from their official network. Given the general public's feelings towards NSO, Nintendo is stuck waving a rather short stick.
Nintendo has found themselves in the peculiar situation where they make spectacular games that everyone wants, they can't be secured. They can secure their services, but noone really cares about that because NSO is terrible and there are free alternatives (and maybe even a paid ones in the future).
But yes, Nintendo has completely lost the security game this time around, and the cancellation of internal revision projects, such as Mariko, indicates to me that they have acknowledged this defeat. But as long as Nintendo continues to to produce and host excellent and unique games, their defeats on the security front will be left irrelevant.
@SCAssassin The new sercurity changes have already been bypassed, took about a half hour. There's really nothing more N can do to secure hackable switches, about all they can do is randomly rearrange elements of the boot process like they did here.
There's no point at all in N trying to fix the unfixable, they should focus on feature updates that will at least make some people happy.
Nintendo really screwed the pooch on this one. Ship the game out to stores in developing countries weeks before allowing access to even trusted reviewers.... gee, I can't see how THAT would ever backfire. I don't think the Russian guy is the only Nintendo executive in imminent risk of termination.
@Yasaal It wouldn't solve anything, especially on a compromised system like the Switch. It would just make life more difficult for legitimate customers.
@Heavyarms55 It didn't need to be stolen. Nintendo shipped to some countries with less-than-ideal shipping networks early so that stores there would have it in release date. Turns out said stores don't care much about release dates.
Pretty much expected for every major Nintendo release at this point.
@Trajan No, the physical exploit (Fusee Gelee) is not fixable. Period. Basically, in 6.2 what N did is they used a currently unhacked security chip to verify at boot whether the OS has been modified, and if it has been, the Switch crashes. Someone clever figured out a way to defeat that check.
The general consensus is that Nintendo did a good job with security on the 6.2 update, but the CPU is so deeply exploited their efforts are a waste.
It's real. Some countries have less than ideal shipping services, so Nintendo distributed them to those places early. Expect a flood of videos and spoilers imminently.
@Retupmocnin Smash was finalized a while ago and won't be able to take advantage of the new 6.2 security benefits, so Jack will have no problem getting his free Smash fix, and probably before the release date, to boot. However, I would bet the all-important updates will require 6.2, so this is definitely a big win for Nintendo.
@Trajan All major Switch updates (2.0, 3.0, 4.0, etc) have blown a fuse, but this one blows a fuse and goes MUCH further. Despite the stability jokes and lack of end-user features, don't fool yourself, this is the most significant Switch OS update since 2.0. I expected something like this before Smash, but I'm surprised Nintendo left PLG and all the other significant recent 3rd-party releases out in the cold.
Some of you will be happy to learn that, despite the short changelog, this update is one of the most significant in the history of the Switch, and it completely breaks all known hacking and piracy methods (for now, anyway).
Hey, at least it can't be pirated directly from Nintendo's own servers anymore. Nintendo is, slowly, improving their security game.
But considering every Switch sold in the first 15 months of its life is basically the most hackable console in history, there's really not much more Nintendo can do.
All the points the review makes are valid, but emphasis needs to be put on just how poorly this game performs. The frame rate is bad, of course, but the part that gets unbearable is the constant audio popping. The bigger your cities get, the more unplayable the game becomes. At 15,000 the game disables fast-fast-forward and the time progression becomes obnoxiously slow. 50,000 is about as big as you can go, beyond that the game becomes a laggy stuttering popping mess. A 5 seems harsh, the core gameplay is excellent, but this is literally the worst performing console I've played for more than a couple hours. I really hope it gets performance updates.
On the bright side, Nintendo seems to have created so much backlash with this "premium" online service that it might inspire an entity with considerable means to reverse engineer the Switch's internet protocol and release their own 3rd party internet service. I'd pay $40 a year for online play on my Switch that avoids Nintendo servers.
