Nintendo has shared an upcoming maintenance schedule for the Nintendo Network, revealing multiple sessions which could have an impact on online play across multiple systems.
There are four sessions taking place over the next two days, each lasting for just a small handful of hours. The information provided says that "online play of some software" could be affected and that "some network services may become unavailable" during this period.
Here are the scheduled maintenance times:
North America (Pacific Time):
- [Switch/3DS] 12th December (4:50 pm – 7:30 pm)
- [Switch/3DS] 12th December (10:00 pm – 11:30 pm)
- [Switch] 13th December (3:50 pm – 6:30 pm)
- [Wii U/3DS] 13th December (6:00 pm – 11:00 pm)
Europe (CET):

- [Wii U/3DS] 14th December (3:00 am – 8:00 am)
If you're planning to jump online with some friends for some heated Super Smash Bros. Ultimate battles or some Splatoon 2 splat-offs, make sure to be a little wary of these particular times.

Need to get those servers better for smash online play!
Maintenance is always good to improve the online.
They didn't realise how popular Smash would be and cannot take the load to updating the system?
I was one of the few lucky chaps to not have much of an issue playing against strangers (using a third party USB 3.0 LAN Adapter and it proved useful). Nevertheless, I hope the online improves for the rest of the community.
Smash Ultimate's online is nearly as bad as Brawl's online was but not really surprising given the LAN adapter warning in the November Direct. Hopefully it improves someday but while it's that bad, I'll stop playing online once I've completed the challenges for it.
Nintendo's online will be having some major issues in the next few days. Consumers say "How will we tell the difference?"
Say it with me Nintendo: Dedicated Servers
Pay-to-wait. And then wait some more.
Still not paying.
Disappointed with Smash as playing online was the main appeal. Sounds like people are having lots of issues and I’m not wasting $20 on broken online play.
Been buttery smooth over here. Actually kinda surprised haven’t had a hiccup at all.
Also using a usb LAN adapter and 150mbps service.
@justin233 i have played massive amounts of mario kart and super smash brothers ultimate both docked and handheld in bed and on the toilet, relatively far away from my router and i did not experience a single issue with online play. 20 euro is nothing for the smooth online play i had so far
Edit: did you try the trial already? Sounds like you did not
Everyone is saying the Smash online is bad, but I've had nothibg but great experiences. Wireless connection and all.
@-DG
Same here
@Friendly 20 euro for smooth gameplay, gameplay that is as smooth or as laggy (depends how good connection others have) as the first 1,5 year for free.
Yes I pay for it too, but I would gladly pay €60 to have same service as Sony or Xbox, because I prefer a good service than being a cheapskate as long Nintendo would really give more.
Or at least make that app usable, sending your friends a message via 3rd party app and using for most games a 3rd party app for online gameplay with your friends because Nintendo their app lacks all time voice chat for all non free online games, sending gameplay requests or messaging (just these 3 things) and paying for that is ridiculus.
Yes I pay €20 a year, because otherwise I can forget playing. MHGU or other non free games.
And read this carefully dear commenters, I'm not against paying for online I would gladly even pay more if nintendo fixed all issues around it like lacking functionality in that app, but I exclude dedicated servers because I know most games on most systems lack those.
I got worried for a second when it said "next 2 days". My birthday was the 13th and I was gonna host a birthday arena. That kinda sucks. Look like it might get cut short.
@Rayquaza2510 agreed on all your points but the part that it was free at the start. That’s something that was communicated with us from the start.
I’m not sure if I would like to pay 40 euro per year just for the ability to text and have a good voice chat though and a few older games the xbox and playstation players get since almost all do not interest me that much.
I’d pay 40 more if they included n64 or gamecube games to the service though.
@Bunkerneath Do the 3Ds and Wii U use the same online services?
Hopefully this helps fix Smash's online.
So the plan was to release the game with the biggest online presence in the system then take the network down so your customers can't play it. Nice.
Maintenance is always a good thing but the time they chose to do it suckz!!! Right when I get home fml
@Friendly I played Splatoon 2 from launch until Sep 2018 - 700+ hours. Lots of issues. Signed up and used trial. Lots of issues. Smash came out. Read comments from many saying online is still broken. Commented here about my situation. I don’t want to waste $20 on mostly broken online.
@Friendly I know it wouldn't stay free and I didn't expect that, what I do mean is that now we pay €20 a year and online didn't get any better, same with the app.
Online works fine with me in Smash and i have a mediocre speed. Glad to see from the comments I am not the only one not having issues.
Oof. Meanwhile, the free alternative, lan-play.com, will be running without interruption.
Dang, guess the maintenance couldn't wait until the weekend early hours. Over two days worth for Switch, sheesh. That'll affect the eShop too more than likely. As long as we're good for the weekend...
One of these days people will learn that when you have so many issues with p2p gaming, it generally means your connection just isn't stable.
dedicated servers won't help you either. (fighting games don't use dedicated servers anyway and for good reason >smash.)
Well, In my case, my connection is not the best, I'm in México. I use a cheap usb ethernet adapter and so far, I haven't had ANY issues with my online play on switch when docked in different games. The only issues come when I play wireless.
Even 3rd party ones like Rocket League (way too many hours of pure online) have given me no problems at all.
@Varelius Yup, this. Not sure when "dedicated servers" became some end-all answer idea, either. It's most certainly not. If you have an unreliable connection or high loss, you're still going to have that when trying to talk to a server. Firewalls, NATs, those things need to be looked into by a player first. It's like scribbling a half-legible address on an envelope and wondering why your friend never got your letter. Plus when a dedicated server title goes down, so does the multiplayer. Warframe is also P2P, I believe.
That said, I've not had any issues with Smash using 4 different connections.
Hopefully it makes Smash 4 and Mario Maker a little better. Otherwise, I couldn't care less what they do to Smash Ultimate unless they're going to fix it first. I'm so used to buying Nintendo 1st party games on the eshop because their usually so good, but, with Smash Ultimate I wish I had gotten it physical, so, I could return it. The whole advertising campaign around it convinced me that it was a good game, better than Smash 4 even, but, it was apparently all a lie, since the game is broken and unplayable.
"Nintendo Network Maintenance Sessions Could Impact Online Gaming Over The Next Two Days"
So no change then...
Quite a lot of downtime, but hopefully it'll at least fix the smash online. Splatoon 2 still needs dedicated servers too. It's their big first-party competitive online game, only makes sense. At least Smash is made for couch multiplayer.
@psychoBrew Your have to do the old school way and just go around your friend's place for a smash. lol
@justin233 700+ hours, that must have been a terrible experience to hold on for so long to a broken feature...
Or were you experiencing massive lag?
@Friendly Disconnects mostly. I would get half way through a game and it would disconnect and end the match. I'm worried Smash will be nothing but lag for me.
I have not played Smash online yet, since I know I wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in hell. But I have never had significant issues with Splatoon 2. Are the issues with Smash, Smash specific?
@Rayquaza2510 lol PlayStation goes down all the time lol
@Triforce79 same here
renaming maintenance
@Heavyarms55 It's mainly with players with lousy connections. Generally I have no issues.
I will give the complainers one point. The Switch's wi-fi range can be rather weak if there is anything between the Switch and the router. I find that it works perfectly well in the same room as the router, but even one wall between the Switch and the router can have a noticeable effect.
But short of a hardware revision I don't know what Nintendo could do about that.
@Slim1999 don't know which Playstation you mean then, I have PS4 and a Switch and both have fine online for what it is.
