You know your business model is busted when you decide the best course of action is to sue Nintendo. I don't know how many Gamevices they sold, but they certainly won't be selling any more in the future.
In light of this news, me and my buddy finally took the plunge and picked a couple up, to stay ahead of what I predict will be a run on the original models in the coming weeks.
In the meantime they're just really fancy paperweights, but I think the investment will be more than worth it by the end of the summer.
Nintendo seems to really be in love with scalpers. I can't even begin to fathom why they would release this pointless product. Nintendo diehards want VC on Switch, not another stupid paperweight they can't even get their hands on. And the non-Nintendo diehards will just keep on emulating everything like before.
At least we'll get an official Star Fox 2 ROM out of it, I guess.
I wonder if they use off-the-shelf FPGAs? It would be awesome to flash one of these through Quartus II or the like. They probably keep the microprocessor design files very secret, though...
Switch port should be priority number one, music rhythm games on home consoles are ruined by display and AVR lag. Manually setting up offset values is a band-aid, not a solution.
The 3DS proved that the games define a system. The 3DS has hardware inferior to basically everything ever, and yet 6 years on and Nintendo still can't make enough to satisfy demand. Amazing.
Talk about missing the boat... Nintendo is going to look at the dismal sales of the Android port and decide they were right to deprioritize it, and are going to forget that $10 is about five times the average cost of a mobile game and that most people (particularly Android cheapskates like me) would only think of paying that much for a brand new game.
Those numbers would probably be higher if the games were cheaper and Nintendo and their overpriced flash memory manufacturer weren't taking such a large cut. I know Nintendo has to protect their retail partners, but this should should have been the generation where Nintendo started charging logical prices for eShop games. I've outgrown physical media, and would never pay the forced "cartridge tax" tacked onto cross-media eShop games, so I'm in the awkward situation of wanting a Switch but having no intention of buying any games for it. Ive felt that way about old consoles before, but never a brand new one. But to me, the only Switch game released or announced so far that is worth $60 is BOTW, the only unannounced game I can imagine paying that much for is Animal Crossing. I have a self-imposed rule that if I don't get at least an hour of playtime per dollar spent on a game, I made a stupid purchase.
The UHS-1 vs UHS-3 test and advice are bunk, a larger card is always going to load slower in it's same class, an effective test would have been to do 2 cards of the same size against each other, 1 of them a cheapie SanDisk UHS-1 and the other the premium UHS-3 Extreme model. I'd guess the load times of a 64GB UHS-1 card would be slower than the 64GB UHS-3.
I knew it would be ROM>SD>CART but I'm glad the difference is insignificant.
Why did Nintendo phone it in on the design of lefty? Righty is a precision-engineered masterpiece, but it's twin is a gimped phoned-in piece of crap. I knew these issues would occur after seeing the first teardown images.
Hopefully, like most phones, the battery is easily replaceable with a little bit of technical skill. I'll wait for the iFixit teardown before I really worry.
Has Nintendo announced a web browser will be available? If not I seriously doubt there will be one, a browser will almost certainly become an obvious and easily exploited security vulnerability.
This is a great strategy in Nintendo's fantasy land where everyone has unlimited money and noone steals or breaks anything, but in reality this concept seems a bit half-baked.
I predict a general video game industry crash in mid to late 2017. It won't be as severe as 1983, but a lot of the contributing factors are the same: too many redundant console choices (PS4 Pro, PS VR, Scorpio, Switch confusion), redundant and non-unique game experiences (too many shooters and open-world RPGs), and widespread proliferation of unofficial games and mods (fill in the blanks). If the Switch is anything but a total flop, Nintendo should be able to improve their market position relative to Sony and MS, but it's hard to predict what profits will look like. Given the lack of guaranteed money-makers in Nintendo's future, I'm not optimistic on that part. Hopefully that SUMO cash can keep them afloat in what promises to be a very tumultuous 2017.
@DanteSolablood I will contend that the Prism release should have been delayed to give the legit Pokemon games a wider exclusive timeframe around the holidays. Cutting in on SuMo and Go's big holiday time in the spotlight was foolish. But by the time of the C&D, the damage had already been done.
@DanteSolablood I agree with most of your points, but I can't possibly fathom how Prism could effect sales of SUMO at all.
EDIT: Oh shit this has come down to linking to the DMCA and Constitution. A document written by men who couldn't have possibly understood electronic communication for another 200 years, versus the document written by men who understand it even less. How relevant..
@DanteSolablood I do agree, the dev did profit from Nintendo's trademarks, and that's not right. But at this late in the game, it seems like they're not taking any of the glory away from him, but are taking away a highly-anticipated game from the community. The C&D gives Koolboyman: 1. The moral high ground, because he never has to release any infringing material 2. An easy excuse for bad or unfinished parts of the game. 3. Tons of free exposure (and hosting) 3. Martyr/Legend status in the community
So why bother with the C&D? Obviously not to deter others from doing the same in the futue :/
@DanteSolablood I can't argue those points, especially about the custom logo, but since Nintendo has ensured we'll never see the actual release I can claim the final release would have had a non-infringing logo, 100% original graphics, all original Pokeydudes, and no mention of any licensed games, and there's no factual way you can ever argue against that. Nintendo shot themselves in the foot by preventing them from being able to ever claim the moral highground because we'll just never really know for certain.
@DanteSolablood As planned the patch would not have contained any of those things. Anything contained in the original Crystal ROM would just be redundant if included in the patch. The patch uses the graphics, sounds, animations, etc of the original ROM. I believe technically the only trademark violation in the patch is the custom text which uses trademarked terms, specifically the names of Pokemon, trainers, and the word Pokemon itself. But you could say Bulbapedia, Serebii, and even this site, to a lesser extent, are also in violation.
FWIW I shared this game on social media precisely because it WAS taken down, so... unintended consequences.
Actually, that would be a great new name for Nintendo after the last couple months... "Unintended Consequences Corp, look at all the dumb things we've done so YOU don't have to"
Some of these comments make the comments section on hardcore piracy sites look intelligent by comparison. You should at least have a general understanding of the technical nature of these mods before commenting. As planned, this mod would have been released as a delta patch, and would not have contained any copyright or trademark violating code. I cant even begin to fathom why some of you Nintendo Warriors are so against this project, there's no feasible way it could have effected sales of any Nintendo products in any way. None.
Also... this is very old news. Why even bother posting this at this point NL? To prove how dumb some of your readers are?
