Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for 8th - 14th June, revealing that Ring Fit Adventure has now surpassed one million boxed sales in Nintendo's home region alone.
The game has found itself regularly occupying the top ten since launch and this week's no different. It sold just over 20,000 copies last week to secure a third place finish, only behind the behemoth that is Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Nintendo's latest release, Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics.
It's been another great week for Nintendo on the whole, with all of the top ten games being on Switch.
Here are the top 10 (first numbers are this week's estimated sales, followed by total sales):
1) [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo) {2020.03.20} - 77.259 / 4.860.488
2) [NSW] Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Nintendo) {2020.06.05} - 47.181 / 111.624
3) [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo) {2019.10.18} - 20.023 / 1.006.069
4) [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) {2017.04.28} - 9.727 / 2.986.454
5) [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo) {2017.07.21} - 8.692 / 3.455.342
6) [NSW] Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition (Nintendo) {2020.05.29} - 7.950 / 115.525

10) [NSW] Super Mario Party (Nintendo) {2018.10.05} - 4.855 / 1.467.338

I wonder what happens when the PS5 is released.
@sanderev not much tbh, Japan is all about handhelds and being social which handhelds help with, the PlayStation 5 will dominate the west instead though
Well think it is fair to say that was a decent week for Nintendo!
Curious to see if Last of Us 2 can challenge for the top spot next week. That game is waiting to unlock on my PS4. 7 hours to go!!
Fantastic for Ring Fit Adventure!
Ring Fit Adventure is the first new IP to reach 1 million copies sold in Japan since the original Splatoon from back in 2015. The game is still supply-constrained even 8 months after launch, so I wouldn't be surprised if the game reached 2 million copies sold by the end of the year if its supply improves.
Best-selling games of all time in Japan (retail sales only):
1) [NGB] Pokémon Red/Green/Blue: 10.23 million
2) [NGB] Pokémon Gold/Silver: 7.17 million
3) [NES] Super Mario Bros: 6.81 million
4) [NDS] New Super Mario Bros: 6.43 million
5) [NDS] Pokémon Diamond/Pearl: 5.83 million
6) [NDS] Pokémon Black/White: 5.54 million
7) [GBA] Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire: 5.34 million
8) [NDS] Animal Crossing Wild World: 5.24 million
9) [NDS] Brain Training 2: 5.08 million
10) [NDS] Animal Crossing New Leaf: 5.07 million
11) [NSW] Animal Crossing New Horizons: 4.86 million
@westman98
Can see it ending up in the number 2 spot.
@TheFullAndy
Same. If you include digital sales, New Horizons should already be at 6+ million copies sold by now.
Sheesh. Reminds me of the DS days. Good times (for Nintendo sales).
@playstation_king Playstation numbers are far from bad in Japan. When it first hits I doubt they will be able to sustain constant numbers but to my knowledge every Playstation system has sold over 10 million in Japan. Ever now when games are released same day on Switch and Playstation 4 Sony usually ends up beating out Switch in copies sold. Never by a ton but it shows Japan has never left Sony.
@westman98
New Horizons is already almost at New Leaf’s lifetime sales numbers, and New Leaf has been out for over 7 years. That’s absolutely INSANE.
Yep curious to see how TLOU2 will do, It’ll probably do well for a week or two then slip down the charts. It’s a very western and depressing looking game.
Ring Fit reached 1 million a while ago, actually. Famitsu doesn't track My Nintendo Store sales and they were around 140k at the end of march, iirc.
@sanderev Japan is Nintendo's market and they thoroughly dominate that market.
The Switch outsold the PS4 in less than 2 years. PS5 won't change much, it's been this way since before the PS3 era.
Even the Wii U was keeping up with the PS4 in Japan before they dropped the Switch.
@westman98 That list is only about Nintendo games, right? It´s surprising not to see Dragon Quest or Monster Hunter there...
LOL at the XBOX lifetime sales
@Razer Wii U sold more than Vita which was a handheld device in a handheld dominated market. That's how much of a joke Sonys Vita was. If you get beat by Wii U, it time to throw in the towel for good.
@the_beaver
Nope, the list is for Japan's all-time best-sellering games at retail across all games.
Monster Hunter Portable 3 for PSP is the 12th best-selling game at retail in Japan.
@BigLarry Still getting crushed by the Wii U in Japan funnily enough.
@mesome713 The Vita actually outsold the Wii U, worldwide and in Japan. 15-16 million compared to the Wii U's 13.5 million.
Great numbers!!
Animal Crossing sales are incredible!
They'd have even more if they could just keep the things in stores.
@westman98 Wow!! It's really impressive to see how Nintendo has always dominated Japan. Thanks for pointing that out, man.
@playstation_king I fully agree with this statement. Sony hasn’t been a Japanese company for a while and the charts are telling. No doubt that they will still sell a significant number of systems (9 million isn’t a small number), but without a portable and a significant backing from Japanese devs, they risk further brand waterfall.
Yes I remember them... They almost held me back from buying one of the best games I've played in a while (how many games are fun, well made, and make you feel good, physically and mentally?), and definitely THE best fitness software and peripheral.
I am pleasantly surprised to see Xenoblade in the top 10, this bodes well for the series’ future.
@playstation_king
I wouldn’t bank on the last part of your statement. Especially in the U.S. Nintendo and Microsoft are both very popular there too.
@WiltonRoots Unless the numbers come from Sony, don't believe those worldwide numbers, it's only guesses cause no one but Sony knows.
I'm glad clubhouse games appears to be doing well so far, I think it's the perfect game for dlc, maybe some more games in the style of darts and bowling?
@playstation_king Playstation 5 will probably dominate the West eventually. For this holiday season, I don't think they'll be able to produce enough to meet demand.
Xbox Series X launch in Japan seems like the most wasteful and fruitless endeavor ever.
They should at least have fun with it, w/ a nice marketing campaign like:
Xbox Series X - It's like hearding cats, if all your cats looked like black refrigerators.
Nice week for Nintendo no doubt, guess that explains the share price.
@sanderev @playstation_king My take is that the Switch will never compete directly with PlayStation or XBox. Sure, they are competitors, but the Switch targets three groups of people:
1. Those who are huge fans of Nintendo exclusives.
2. Those who are dedicated gamers who want to pick up the Switch as an additional console for the portability to their main console (PC+Switch, PS+Switch, Xbox+Switch).
3. Casual/moderate gamers who like the hybrid nature of the Switch to play quick rounds of games during work, school, etc.
Yes, I think once the new consoles hit, the Switch might lose some steam, but that it still fills in the gaps of what I said above, I think there will still be an audience for it, especially if the economy stays weak like it is right now and the asking price of the new consoles is $500 or more.
I do also believe Sony focusing more on the States and less on Japan has hurt the PlayStation's standing in the country. Nintendo is still firmly a Japanese company. Sony for the most part has let PlayStation be an autonomous unit in California despite being a Japanese company.
Having said all that, the next, more powerful Switch should come in the next year or two so the power gap doesn't become enormous.
@Itsacardgame I mean, they still have the five biggest Japanese devs (Capcom, Square Enix, Bandai Namco, Sega, and Koei Tecmo) releasing more titles on the PS4 than any other platform over the last 3 years. While it's admittedly close in some cases (Switch for Koei Tecmo). With the Xbox being a non-existent competitor in Japan, I don't think they need to worry about losing their place there.
@kingbk I agree a more powerful switch has to be released within the next year especially if they want the next crop of next gen titles on the switch.
And here I was wondering if new horizons would hit 5m in a timely manner ... With half the year to go, it should be able to hit 6m physical by Xmas. That's 40k sales over 25 weeks, plus any likely Xmas boost.
I would love to buy ring fit, but have been holding off due to the $120+ price tag here in Australia. It's just a piece of plastic guys plus the game...
Hopefully Nintendo is still able to maintain a strong presence in the top ten when the next wave of consoles comes out. Some of the things revealed for PS5 and Xbox should be making Nintendo eager to innovate. I hope they do!
@playstation_king I mean, you aren’t wrong about the popularity of mobile gaming in Japan, but considering how long the lines were for the PS4 in Japan, I think there’s room for another home console generation.
@playstation_king That’s also an interesting point. I’m half expecting Nintendo to not release more powerful hardware, because they seem to be pulling themselves out of the hardware race. They made a strong stance this generation by releasing their hardware during a different cycle to stand out from the competition. If that’s the case I think it would be unfortunate, so I hope they thoroughly prove me wrong.
@kingbk I guess that depends on how you view a console. To people like us, it’s pretty clear they are not trying to compete by doing their own thing. On the other hand, a parent who doesn’t read gaming news just sees another console on the shelf at the store, so the game companies would be smart to try to compete for that potential purchase.
Speaking of, looks like RFA is in stock at Amazon and GameStop as of a little bit ago for NA buyers!
@sanderev I think Switch sales will slow in the face of the PS5 (except maybe in Japan), but it will probably still sell decently well. It will still have the advantages of being the only portable and Nintendo's first party titles.
@geni53yr7 The game released eight months ago today, and literally sells out every time they ship more copies. It's #3 this week, eight months after release. And there is a massive community of people who are still playing it every day or two. I've been doing it for months and have about 60 hours play in it. And it's not only giving me enjoyment but helping me keep in shape, which is never bad. I don't see myself stopping any time soon, and there are like five other people in my friends list who are working out at least every other day, some of them with at least double my playtime.
All this to say I seriously doubt that it's going to suddenly disappear in the next few months.
I know it barely sells, but it's awesome that the Japanese consistently buy the Xbox one X over the S. The X is such a good console.
Are they still making new physical copies+accessories of Ringfit Adventure in America? I can't find a new copy anywhere at my local Walmart, Target etc etc. And Amazon only seems to have used copies people are charging double the price for? I really want this game and was planning on getting it this year before Summer officially begins. Sigh.
@Oddball83 I picked one up at Game Stop just a couple days ago and someone else said theirs had a couple too. Not sure if they are just old stock or not but there are some still out there at stores that were shut down for the past few months.
The only reason i clicked this article was that i thought i saw my boy TB, Tom. I was mistaken.
YAAAAY Xenoblade! Keep doing that!!!!
With these high numbers I hope there are other games that use it or at least support it.
@sanderev It'll probably be a seller for its first month and then quickly fade into obscurity unless more games are available. They need games like Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter, and Dragon Quest on PS5 or else the Japanese will avoid.
@westman98
Wild World is the top single SKU game that was not also sold boxed with the console.
Not at all an applesto apples comparison.
