Well, we made it folks! Today, Atlus' latest JRPG Shin Megami Tensei V has arrived on Nintendo Switch, and the studio has dropped a launch trailer to celebrate.
You probably know all about it by now, especially if you've already read through our glowing review which called it the best entry in the series to date, but here's another look at the game's synopsis:
When a grisly murder scene in modern-day Tokyo blocks our protagonist’s walk home, an unplanned detour leaves him buried and unconscious.
He awakens in a new Tokyo, a wasteland ravaged by apocalypse now called Da’at...but before bloodthirsty demons can claim his life, a savior emerges, and they unite to become a mighty being neither human nor demon: a Nahobino.
With newfound power, the protagonist ventures through Da’at, an enigmatic realm filled with mythical deities and demonic tyrants in constant conflict for survival. Searching for answers, the protagonist must forge his own path in a battle between light and dark to dictate the fate of the world.
If you are thinking of picking this one up today, remember that it's available both physically and digitally and that there's also a Digital Deluxe Edition available. The standard releases are available for $59.99, while the $84.99 Deluxe version comes with the following:

My physical copy arrived earlier. Looking forward to playing it once I manage to pry myself away from The Binding of Isaac: Repentance.
Oh yes! My game arrived earlier today!
Mine as well arrived. Will play after work.
I still do not know if this game is for me. I love jrpgs, but never played this franchise, or persona before. The story is a very, very, very important thing for me in jrpgs. So, a game like Octopath that had amazing gameplay and graphics was still meh for me, and I tend to prefer jrpgs with worlds full of npcs, and side stories, and this seems like a very empty world. Will wait for user reviews for now.
Been playing the game since it unlocked in the middle of the night
tImE tO wAtCh ThE tRaiLeR!
a couple hours into SMT5 and already enjoying it
As always, looking good. I’m not picking it up for a bit as I have WAY too many games in my backlog and I’ve never played a Shin Megami game before. Definitely want to try it sometime soon though, hopefully this winter I can kick through most of my backlog and pick this up! Glad to hear everyone is enjoying it!
Ok, for an apparent mistake in my local eshop, the game is at half-price right now. I had many doubts about this game, but knowing they will fix the mistake anytime now as no other eshop has it at half price, I had no option but to buy it. Hope it is great!
It looks really a game very fun like a xenoblade style.
Mine hasn't shipped yet ... womp womp.. I'm so upset.. I ordered the steel book when NL launched their raving review and I think that's what the holdup is. They had them in stock when I ordered but now there's delays. That's what I get for not putting my faith in Atlus/Sega like I always have in the past. Now I'm paying the price for having waited so long to preorder. I'm honestly tempted to just opt for the digital version because I want to play it so freaking bad. I was watching live streams of it last night and ...ugh...the main character is my new game crush.
I'm honestly in disbelief this day has come.
Not anytime soon, from what I've read, it seems like it'll yet again have an extremely barebones story with the blandest characters imaginable. I'll probably play all the earlier smts and persona 6 by the time I actually get to this game. Hopefully it'll be on sale by then cause the demons and combat itself look fantastic
I got lucky and got my copy a few days early, haven't had too much time to play it yet and I'm still in the first area (it is pretty big) but I did just beat the first major boss of the game.
I had some pretty big fears for the game but so far some of it has been alleviated at least, on hard mode the challenge is definitely there so far, even the regular mooks do pose a threat as they should and as much as I do hate the fact that the battle initiative is affected by the player's action game skills (something that has zero place in a turn-based game in my opinion) at least is still seems the enemies do get the initiative sometimes even if you do strike the enemies on the map, so there is some degree of randomness to it as well. The first boss battle was quite good and I had to go at it a few times to get it but the element dampener items you can get very cheaply at the shop do seem a bit too overpowered, those were very much key for me to defeat the boss with the team I had that had bunch of super effective on it but the boss could hit my weakness back just as well, but the dampener items nearly completely circuvented that weakness and even totally ended the enemy's turn.
I also do find the menus a bit confusing to navigate and while the soundtrack has been solid enough it hasn't really blown me away either so far as the SMT4 soundtrack did.
As a fan of dungeon crawler something I do absolutely love is how they turned the full-heal on level up feature into a unlockable skill instead, I despise that feature and while I'm not entirely sure if it was really their intention to give the player a choice considering the feature cost chump change to unlock I still do love that, I can just op to not unlock that ability and I can keep my resource management stuffs intact in that way at least.
On a really positive note the new demon models and their animations are absolutely superb, I wish it was on a bit more powerful hardware so it'd look less muddy and ran a bit more smoothly but even so it is a really nice looking game.
Overall I wouldn't say I'm completely blown away so far but I've definitely been having a good time, I am a bit curious to see where the story will go and moreso how the alignment system will be handled, those are usually what lead to the most exciting moments in these games in my eyes.
My sister is going to get this game, looks fantastic. I love the horror elements, and all the rpg elements, I am glad there is an easy mode, so I can play too.
This or Pokémon remakes. Tough decision
@LifeRetro Tough, really?? XD
Go for this one, man!
@Judal27 All mainline SMT's have a fairly basic story so if the most modern doesn't convince you the earlier ones won't do anything to change that, they couldn't be any more removed from Persona as their strenghts lie within atmosphere, world building and excellent gameplay
@ChromaticDracula even mine... no shipped yet 🤬
@LifeRetro both!
I'm refreshing Amazon every time I have a spare minute at work (so not that often, hysterical laughter) to see if my game has been delivered yet. If I don't crash the minute I sit down after work, I'll be playing as long as I can stay awake tonight.
Work done, kids in bed, I’m about to dive in
I've played Shin Megami Tensei V for about an hour. I like the game so far, the difficulty is just right. Now that I've had a break, I'll hop on and level for a little bit!
@Kr96 Yea I know, I played nocturne and IV and enjoyed them a lot but I was hoping V would give you more of a reason to go through the barren wastelands for 100+ hours so I'm not really in a rush to drop $60 on it anytime soon
Also I've heard one of the early smts had a good story, but I can't remember if it was 1 or 2. Either way I'm playing them both cause it's a very fun series. All it needs is an actual story and characters to go along with it
Very excited to start playing! Unfortunately with the GTA Trilogy taking up most of my Switch time, SMT 5 will have to wait. And with Pokémon next week, I'll probably start SMT 5 in December 🥴
This game is amazing, Atlus has delivered yet again
Wow.This game is blowing me away. I don’t even know if I have time for Pokémon when it comes out. I’m all about leveling up my demons and mutating them into something better.
Can't wait to pick up my Fall of Man Edition tomorrow.
Will be purchasing my digital copy once I have a free hour this weekend .... Can't wait 😀
I’ve been playing all day. I’m still in the first area, and I’m grinding somewhat a bit, but I’m having a blast! I enjoy the exploration and it’s constantly rewarding. I’m about to fight the first major boss, so I am excited about that.
Only 2 hours in but this is feeling pretty great so far!
Looking forward to playing this game whenever I get this game!
Hell YES, looking forward to this longer than prime 4!
And i would be playing it...IF my Switch didn't decide to "die" on me now... (Fan is dead, sounds like a dentist drill. Proper parts are hard to come by atm.)
But from what little i could play (about 2h) it's great!
My preorder from Best Buy says it will get here on Tuesday...so, umm...what the hell was the point of preordering?
@LifeRetro
Obviously SMT5 imo.
Seems to be sold out everywhere in Canada. Only edition available was Steelbook and I cant find it anywhere.
Damn this game is fun and challenging! (remember to save often)
@JasmineDragon That's gonna be me once my Switch OLED gets shipped to me. I won it on eBay 😁
