Had enough time to recover from the Splatoon 3 hype following yesterday's Nintendo Direct? Good, because we're about to dive in a little deeper.
With both Splatoon 3 and Splatoon 2 launching on the same system, it might seem that there's not all that much of a difference between the two, but early signs suggest that the new entry will have several new twists that should keep series veterans more than intrigued.
Nintendo has shared a thread on Twitter going over some of the game's finer details, acting on behalf of the 'Squid Research Lab' and discussing the 'video transmission' – meaning the Direct trailer up above. We've broken down all of the new info for you below:
Splatsville and the Splatlands
"Here we see Splatsville, the newly discovered “city of chaos.” It has a dated feel yet seems densely populated. Research indicates that Splatsville’s development has accelerated rapidly since the Final Splatfest a year and a half ago, even though it’s located far from Inkopolis."
"We’ve learned that Splatsville is located in a broader region called the Splatlands. It seems the intense sun and harsh environment have had a profound effect on its inhabitants. In recent years, trendsetting Inklings have been drawn to this culture like moths to a Bunsen burner!"
Gameplay
"Even in the Splatlands, Inklings seem devoted to the popular pastime of Turf War. The basic rules appear unchanged—two teams of four compete to ink the most ground. However, the denizens of Splatsville appear to have taken their battles into the surrounding wilds of nature!"
"In the Splatlands, Inklings seem to favor entering the battlefield by launching themselves out of some sort of midair spawner drone. It appears they can even choose their landing spot before flying into action!"
"We’ve identified two new ways that Inklings can move. A “squid roll” allows them to leap and twirl out of their ink, and a “squid surge” allows them to quickly swim up ink-covered walls and jump out at the top! Just think how these abilities could be used in the heat of battle…"
Customisation (And Pets?)
"It’s no secret that Inklings and Octolings can arrange their head tentacles in various “hairstyles.” However, it seems these wonderful creatures are capable of more intricate designs than previously known. Just look at this Inkling… It has a braid! What a day for science."
"In the new video transmission, an Inkling is seen accompanied by a juvenile Salmonid called a Smallfry. Our studies have long shown the Salmonids to be a dangerous species. How this seemingly symbiotic relationship evolved is a thrilling mystery. Further research is required!"
Weapons, New and Old
"We’ve also discovered a new weapon with a shape like a bow. It looks a bit primitive at first glance, but on closer inspection, it’s packed with technology, including a mechanism capable of launching three strings of ink simultaneously!"
"In the video transmission, we also spotted some special weapons! In addition to a brand-new one, some seem like reconfigured versions of special weapons found in Inkopolis. How perfectly fitting for the city of chaos…"
"Classic main weapons appear viable in the Splatlands, although their appearance seems evolved to suit this unique culture. The .96 Gal and Range Blaster look markedly different than we’re used to, which will seemingly make them stand out more from other weapons of the same type."
That 2022 release window seems ages away, doesn't it?

Beyond excited for this game!
Can hardly wait
That's cool that they commented on it
Getting some Fortnite vibes from the midair changes. As long as Splatoon retains its identity, this could pave the way for wonderful changes.
I was extremely worried this would be splatoon 2 again with no changes because it looked the same from the gameplay and I knew just weapons and maps wouldn't change that but the movement options thing put those fears to rest this looks like a much faster game and I'm all for it hyped!!!!!!
@Zach777 Same be nice to get into a new splatoon...
I bought my copy of 2 after the final fest ;-;
I LOVE THE BIG POOFY CURLY HAIRSTYLE I AM GONNA MAIN THAT STYLE https://images.nintendolife.com/8d743c829ce81/splatoon-3.original.jpg
those Octoling hair styles on the bottom kinda look like spring man from arms...

@redpanda0310 You've still got a year and a half, im sure the commmunity will be around for quite some time!
Other than golf the best news of the direct. So 2022 is the good year we’re all waiting for. Zelda, splatoon, Metroid.
yey splatoon 2 part 2
I'm even more hyped for this than BOTW 2. I've put more hours into Splatoon 2 than any other game in my entire life. If BOTW 2 and Splatoon 3 both arrive in 2022, it's seriously gonna be one of the best years for Nintendo. I wonder what game they will have in storage for us this Holiday season, if that turns out to be the case. Also, if anyone thought I forgot about Metroid, while I do hope it arrives this year, at the earliest. I still think it might be a 2023 title.
Team Order.
Super hyped!! Only thing that has me slightly concerned is what's new and better about this compared to Splatoon 2, or is it just more Splatoon. Like either way I'm beyond happy but I just want to know what makes it more different from the last.
This bow I hereby dub the "Squid Hunter"
So will the final boss be a brainwashed Marina if we're going by tradition of the Final Splatfests?
@Medic_Alert that’s exactly what every first person shooter sequel is. They easily could just add dlc but a new game makes them more money. As long as I get new salmon run and maybe a new mode then I’ll be happy.
@Medic_Alert Give it some time, when OG Splatoon was announced it was only gonna be a multiplayer game, and people thought it wouldn't be worth the price. I'm sure it will have loads of new stuff
@Medic_Alert It's been 5 years. I kind of see it like Pokémon generations, you get a new generation every few years. The games usually are very similar.
Would it not maybe be better to turn Splatoon into a live service? It feels a bit soon for a sequel after 2 but then again, the last couple of years have flown by.
Loved Splatoon from the first one forward. Glad to see this is on its way. Would love some editable maps for private battles. Thank you, Nintendo!
@Medic_Alert I totally get what you mean, I'm almost the exact opposite. I hope they don't change the core-gameplay too much. Because to me, Splatoon just feels so great to play. I'm very rarely into shooters these days, but I can literally spend the entire day playing Splatoon without getting bored.
But, even with all that, I sort of hope lots of changes too, to bring back those people who might've gotten bored of Splatoon already. Something for everyone.
Choosing your spawn point changes everything!! Can’t wait to find out more about how the buddies work
I’d like to see them keep all the modes from 2 but I think they should try an open world aspect kindve like destiny with gear and stuff also.
I'm wondering to what degree chaos winning actually impacted this game?
If Splatsville is the "City of Chaos" then I believe they're patterning it after the "Walled City" of Kowloon. It was an extremely densly packed city, the size of several city blocks squared, that pretty much kept building on top of and within itself until there was no sunlight in most of the streets and alleys. It was a featued setting for the 2nd half of Shenmue 2. I find its history fascinating, but also kinda dark if they're really using it for Splatoon.
I'm hyped. It looks very different from the first two games.
Also, 2022 is only a year away. It'll be here before we know it.
Local multiplayer or no buy. That simple for me.
...But will there be a new pop duo?
A boy band this time around?
I'm in for the single player mode - hope it's as good as the previous two games. They were they best bits, multiplayer online isn't for me
@Qwertyninty local wireless play or no buy. That simple for me.
I'll buy this day one. Splatoon was my favorite game on Wii U, and Splatoon 2 ( until I got high enough rank to encounter more and more cheaters ) was my favorite game on the Switch. Let's see what 3 has to offer!
I'm getting a Chinese vibe from the hub city. There is a pagoda, a chinese dragon on top of a building and one of those fortune piggies. Quid will get you 10 the next musical act will be whatever the Chinese punk scene is doing right now
Why can't next year come faster.
Looks awesome! Splatlands is a nice looking new environment for the series.
Also pretty safe to say it sounds like all the stages will be brand new, with a more natural settings
so hyped on this
@Pod I want them to be Salmonids
but l don't like the harsh lands. Its so dull and not colorful for a splatoon game
If Order had won that last Splatfest, I wonder if we'd be looking at a futuristic looking Splatoon 3.
Any other dev would have made this game being like a seasonal service. Is a sequel really needed? 2 was barely a sequel. This was like Splatoon 1.75.
Only reason I see this happening is Nintendo wants to cash in on Switch’s bigger audience.
@Ghostchip Crazy to think because Splatoon 2 was already a major step up in battle intensity compared to Splatoon 1. If Splatoon 3 has even faster gameplay it's going to be quite extreme.
"Splatsville’s development has accelerated rapidly since the Final Splatfest a year and a half ago"
So yeah we would have a different region/city if Order had won, it seems!
Plus, I haven't been able to truly recognize what is the mainstream culture over Splatsville. More punk?
I love the observant scientist roleplay they do for the Splatoon news. It's adorable.
Also, interesting that they "officially" added some gameplay mechanics such as fast swimming up walls!
@masterLEON My thoughts exactly. At first I just thought, ‘Kowloon Walled City in the Gobi desert’.
@LUIGITORNADO 2 is really a sequel especially if you count the Octo Expansion and story mode. Sure the core gameplay didn't change much (no need) but the game had enough to be called a new iteration.
Also we have a new CoD and Fifa game every year. This is a new game after five years!!!!
I'm really hoping with the way they are taking about the Splatlands we get a more story/open world single player campaign, that revolves around the Smallfry
I've always debated getting splatoon 2 but something else always came up. Ill defo make sure to get this on release as it does look fun and being new to the series sounds like a good thing if its like fifa where its slightly different each year.
Here's hoping the singleplayer is more expansive than just simple platforming and challenges.
@sanderev No, we don't count the Octo Expansion because that was an expensive DLC.
So, in Splatoon and Splatoon 2 I could swim up walls. In Splatoon 3 I'll be able to do it a bit faster?
There seriously has to be a lot more news to come to get me buying this next one.
Let's hope they support splatoon 3 for more than a year
Splatoon 2 died so quickly after only one year there was no new weapons or maps or regular splatfests
I hope this also has a brand new single-player mode for those who want it. I'm a massive Splatoon fan so I'll be buying this no matter what, but I understand how others are a little disappointed with this reveal. They didn't exactly show what makes this game stand out from Splatoon 2 between minor gameplay changes.
@_Dan I don't know about that I played splatoon 1 for the first time in a while and it's still as fast as splatoon 2. What I really meant though is maybe like the dualie roll just being part of the moveset because that's how I interpret the one move
@sixrings and Bayonetta 3.
that explain why the Animal Crossing New Horizons updates is so barebones(they are working on Splatoon 3, Hishahi Nogami is the Producer of Animal Crossing and Splatoon.
@Ghostchip I only mean that the arenas in 2 are generally tighter and so combat takes a greater focus for all players.
I might be overanalyzing here... but the graphics look sharper than Splatoon 2. Not the screen resolution, but the shadows and paint splatters look like they're working with higher resolution textures.
Improved coding... or hardware upgrade?
would be interesting if Splatoon 3 had a Single-Player Open World Mode. i still need to get Splatoon 2, and beat the single player mode and Octo Expansion in it. with the third game coming, it's now good time to do so.
I’m loving the aesthetic. It feels like this game will be more expansive than the previous one, so here’s to hoping! 🤞
@_Dan yeah I agree I was mostly talking about the controls but your right my bad. I'm not sure which one I like more personally I really liked splatoon 1s maps more they were more memorable
I'm calling this a launch title for the Switch Pro. Whether it only runs on the pro, will need to be seen.
Hopefully the online performance, hacking and related issues are all fixed. That's what I really want.
@gcunit If you don't count the Octo expansion you are going to get even more new stuff: for instance you can play as an Octarian.
Hope splatoon 3 improves online connectivity issues, cheaters/hackers, and the obvious lack of online features such as modern voice chat. What i hope they add to splatoon 3 to give it a different feel would be some sort of battle royale mode. I feel a battle royale mode would fit in extremely well to the theme of chaos and I've thought it would be a fun idea for some time. Some other ideas are having a more explorable hub and an open world mode, (maybe the campaign would be open world) somewhat like destiny or other games. About the idea of a explorable hub this has always been a dream, in the first and second game i've always felt really underwhelmed with the amount of things i can do in the hub. Maybe certain clothing stores for higher levels or NPCs you can interact with and maybe do missions for, maybe getting certain special items for side quests in the hub creating a certain progression not felt during the first two games. For a lot of times the only reason why I leveled up is to unlock slightly better versions of guns I already had. Out of the ideas about new mechanics I mentioned I feel that a improved hub would be the most realistic and in my opinion a concept that would enrich progression in the game.
